Colts DT Pick

I'm not sure that DT is a huge need for the Colts anymore. Next season they'll have Anthony McFarland back from injury to go with Raheem Brock, Ed Johnson, Quinn Pitcock, Keyunta Dawson, Darrel Reid and Dan Klecko.

McFarland played great during the superbowl run and was ready to anchor the Colts line again this year before the knee injury in camp. Brock's been a starter the last two seasons and has looked better than ever this season. Ed Johnson worked out great as a undrafted FA, I had heard he was a mid round talent but teams were scared off by off-the-field issues. He's playing great and hopefully keeps his troubles in the past. Keyunta Dawson has started and rotated in, playing well in both roles. Pitcock has worked his way into the lineup the last few games as well. Behind the starters and young talent they still have Dan Klecko and Darrel Reid.
If they do need more DTs Polian has shown he can find rotation or better guys late or as FAs.

No OL for Steelers...

That's their most pressing concern right now. They'd definetly be taking atleast one O-lineman in the first two rounds.

I hope they go OL in each of first two rounds
That's no doubt their most pressing need.

CB is actually a position of depth. McFadden should step in as a starter next year and Townsend can extend his career a couple of years by playing a 'nickel' corner. Gays not bad for a youngster either. I'm not sure why they would use a second round pick on a WR either although I've seen a ton of 'mocks' that have then taking a WR in the first or second.

Just out of curiosity

I was interested to see where you might DeShaun Jackson going in the draft. I think he's a pretty darn good bet to declare, and somehow I have a hard time seeing him falling out of the first two rounds (though he is kind of small).

Did you just leave him off the list, or do you have him lower than these rounds? If you have him lower, is there a reason other than size? His 40 is likely to be stellar and he's got plenty of special teams value as well as pretty polished routes in a semi-pro system.

Why would anybody want to kiss rocks?

Jackson

I don't have him on the list of players likely to declare, yet. If and when Jackson does enter the NFL Draft, there are going to be major questions about his real skills as a wide receiver and his size, or lack there of.

A lot of people want to compare Jackson to Ted Ginn, Jr. which is an unfair comparison to Ginn. At Ohio State, Ginn had turned himself into a good route runner and dynamic return man. Jackson is not the best route runner on his own team and makes his mark only on special teams, end arounds and YAC. While I do think there is a place in the NFL for Jackson, he's going to need to gain weight and bide his time as a return man while he learns the WR position.

Jackson

I just posted a comment on Jackson on a different thread.  There I questioned hether he is NFL ready.  However, to say he is somehow not as polished a route runner as Ginn is a bit absurd.  In fact, that's one of Jackson's great assets, his route running.  From my view, there production was pretty similar, if not better for Jackson.  In Ginn's last two years, he caught 110 balls for 1,584 yards and caught 13 TD's.  Jackson, in his last two years caught 119 balls for 1,741 yards and 14 TD's.  As for ST play, Jackson is also the better PR'er.  In Ginn's last two years he had 49 PR and 2 TD's.  Jackson reurned 37 punts his last two years and had 5 TD's.

Routes

Jackson runs two routes: fade and flag. He's never been a good receiver across the middle and lacks the dip in his hips to convince an NFL cornerback that he's making a change in his direction. Jackson may be agile, fast and a hell of a return man; but he's not a well versed route runner in every facet of the game.

Statistics are great, but they are just stats. Tackles don't equate to a starting linebacker in the NFL and you really have to compare competition and schemes if you even consider stats. Jackson will have to overcome his lack of height, size and the fact that he's a one-trick pony as a receiver. If he were put in a pro style offense like New England or Indianapolis, Jackson would suffer due to his inability to run more than a sideline route.

Some thoughts

I rather see Miami taking Dorsey since, bad as their offense is, their defense is just a complete joke and that starts up front.

I'm about 50/50 on New England taking Darren McFadden.  Hard to pass up a talent like that, but it seems like a waste since they have a perfectly good HB in Laurence Maroney.  What they seem to need is help in the linebacking corps, since Vrabel and Bruschi aren't getting any younger.  That would probably mean Dan Connor...but can you justify taking him that high?  Then again, when you have so few holes as the Patriots do, you can take what you need no matter the pick.  I can also seem them trading out of it.  But I'm talking myself in circles.

Bold prediction:  The Jets take McFadden or Malcolm Kelly.

Deciperhing Al Davis' mind is always tough.  I know Al would be tickled to have the Son of Howie.  Then again, if DeSean Jackson comes out he might go here because, Davis being Davis, the Raiders seem never to be able to pass up a tall receiver with blinding speed.  They should draft defense though...but how is Chris Long against the run?  It's the interior of that line that's weak, so I think they should so Sedrick Ellis.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Baltimore make a play for Andre Woodson...seems like he'd be a good fit there.

Finally, I'm very glad to see someone else putting Colt Brennan to the Rams in round 2, which is exactly where I have him pegged.  What a great fit he would be with the Rams' offense!  With Bulger there to mentor him for a few years, he might make a Tony Romo-like impact when he debuts down the line.

Re:

I think that Dorsey could go #1 overall, but drafting a nose tackle for a 3-4 defense first overall would be simply odd. It's a position that is easy to find and fill. Jake Long can step in and solidify the LT position, much like Joe Thomas has in Cleveland. With John Beck, Ronnie Brown and Ted Ginn, Jr; Miami has a good offensive base to build on. Adding a stud LT would really give them a cornerstone for this young offense.

Maroney is a good talent, but he's also never been a #1 RB in his career. This is the first year that he was supposed to be "the man" and he's been banged up all year. Maroney may be best in a rotation, especially early in his career. Adding McFadden simply makes this offense sick, as he can play a multitude of positions and allow them Pats to use Maroney in a rotation.

Dan Connor cannot be drafted #2 overall. The Pats would likely draft Keith Rivers (USC) before Connor of they wanted to go LB. The knock on NE linebackers is they lack speed, something Rivers is full of. He's a Junior Seau clone.

I can't see Jackson going top 5 or 10, if he comes out. A lot of talk is that he'll stay at Cal to work on his actual receiving skills. I know a lot of people are enamored with his return skills, but we're talking about a top 5 pick.

The Jets would do well to take McFadden or Kelly, assuming either one is still available.

Rivers and Keenan Burton

I can live with that. Nice work.

Also, McFadden on the Pats ... What's the record for the most games won in a 2-year span? Has anybody ever won 38 in a row?

by Sunil on Dec 4, 2007 2:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Patriots

At this point, I think it's 50/50 whether the Pats take
McFadden if he's available or if they try and trade down to take a LB, their bigger need. The Pats philosophy is always to take the best talent available at the slot, but they really need defensive help next year. On the other hand, McFadden would be incredibly tempting to take and the Pats have two third round picks (including a likely early one from Oakland) that could be used to shore up the defense.

Reagardless though, I can't see the Pats taking two running backs.

Jay

Thanks for pointing that out. A huge over-sight on my part. I'll be editing this mock soon.
