Michael Crabtree...

So I am kind of new here at Mocking The Draft but I love the draft and when not over at my site Bronco Madness covering it I thought that I would post here as another outlet for my so called "wisdom" or whatever you call it. I thought I would start out by talking a bit about Michael Crabtree who in my eyes could be the most controversial draft prospect in years. By that I mean while he would be a sure fire first rounder if he applies for the draft he could end from the last 10 picks to the number 1.

There is something about him and how he has those soft, prefect hands. That is the reason that I love him so much. Some people like fast, small receivers who have only average hands but when I look at a Wide Receiver the first things I look at are the three H's: hight, hands, and heart. I want them to be tall enough to stand over Cornerbacks and I want them to get high balls so that they can adjust to QB with their hight. I never want to see a receiver drop a big pass. That is my biggest pet peeve.  As for heart, there are so many players at WR who just give up on plays. If the pass is thrown too high they won't jump. If it is too ahead they won't dive. If it is behind they will just give up. You need heart to help your QB when he messes up. That will happen.

Michael Crabtree if you have ever watched him has all of those things. So why is he controversial? The better question would be how isn't he? Crabtree is only a sophomore but since he was red shirted he can apply for the draft. Therefore it raises the question of experience. College Football has become an outlet for players who are very raw and untested to become more skilled and get ready for the NFL. It is almost a training program for them. So if you do not have that experience, should you be in the NFL after only to college seasons?

The second question that raises eyebrows about Michael Crabtree is the matter of timed speed. As you can see from what I said earlier that is not a problem to me for so many players get by in the NFL with only average speed but the traits that he does have. Timed speed is important though to most scouts because Cornerbacks have become so fast that if you can not control your speed on a moments notice and make quick moves then you will be stuck in coverage at all times resulting in Interceptions and Incomplete passes. It is a lot different from College Football where Interceptions are more rare then they are in the NFL.

The final point that should be made on why Michael Crabtree is controversial is that Texas Tech is well known for putting up big numbers with their play style. This is the same Achilles heel that killed Colt Brennan's draft stock last year at Hawaii. It can be very deceiving and make a player look a lot better than they really are. But still, Crabtree had over 1,900 reception yards. That stuff can very rarely be deceptive. Personally, I think he should apply for the draft but there are some questions.

What might make him hesitate is the lack of need for a big time Wide Receiver next year and even if teams to need one they have bigger priorities. Of all 32 teams this year I only saw 6 that were in a big need of a Wide Receiver. That means that he would less likely be needed. Besides, the position of Wide Receiver is not one that teams stretch farther for a player than they should. You can get a solid Wide Receiver until about the 4th round, sometimes more. That makes even more people wonder, "Wow... Should he come into the NFL this year?"

Finally, there is the matter of money. With the Bears (who I pegged as the number 1 pick drafting Crabtree) looking a heck of a lot better there are few teams in the top 10 picks who could use him which brings money into the equation. He will make more money if he waits another year. But, if his draft stock falls more then it would be a big mistake. There are so many things that could be put into play about him. This should worry him and whoever his agent is.

So I will leave it to you all to decide... What do you think of Michael Crabtree?

I love Crabtree

It’s one thing to put up big numbers as Texas Tech (Amendola) It’s another to look dominant (Welker). Obviously, they are very different players but there’s something to be said for the fact that Mike Leach simply finds good receivers. I think he’s a stud in the Brandon Marshall mold (although the post’s author, as a Broncos fan would be more of an authority on that particular comp) who may go through an unproductive rookie year, but then emerge in a big way.

Pretty clearly the first time he has ever looked at a web site. "And there are readers' comments at the bottom! And advertisements for products! And best of all, I won a free iPod!"

Agreed...

There is this tendency in the NFL to think that if a player does not break out in his first 3 years he will be a bust. So many players break out around a 5th or 6th year now a days who it looked bleak for. Especially when it comes to a position such as Wide Receiver it can take a good QB for that break out. And yes, he is in the Brandon Marshall mold with the size and hands it takes to be successful at the next level.

Reggie Wayne wasn't near the player is he now until his 4th season (he did progress though)

Rookie 27 rec 345yards 0TDs
year 2 49 rec 716yards 4TDs
year 3 68 rec 838yards 7TDs

year 4 77 rec 1210yards 12TDs

Most WRs take some time.

I agree, it is very rare for a WR to but up huge numbers his rookie year.

The only two I can think of were Moss and Bouldin that really had great rookie years.

Crabtree will do fine

I don’t think he will have spectacular numbers his rookie season because he will likely be a top 5 pick and when you are a top five pick, that usally means that the team drafting you has a lot of issues, and with a WR, I think it is important that he has a good QB and O-line to excel. I would expect him to wind up in Oakland, I am sure Al Davis is drolling in his walker right now with the thoughts of QB Russel, RB McFaden, and WR Crabtree, along with the TE they have, that gives them some definate talent on the offensive side of the ball.

What a waste

Putting him a Raiders uniform and having Al Davis call a bunch of deep routes for him is such a waste. The guy is so versatile that he needs an offense that can plan to get him in space and get him on deep routes.

I know it's a waste

But Davis loves speed, and he knows his offense needs weapons on the outside, but I hate to see him waste his early career in Oakland.

Not Controversial

Scouts like Crabtree because he has every thing a receiver needs, the hands, the size, the cuts, the open field ability. The Texas Tech offense is a non-factor when evaluating him because his skills jump off the screen/field to the point where you can’t even think to compare him to Amendola or Welker.

Macklin...

is a more safe pick. He has both speed and good hands. I would like him to be a bit taller but he is still more safe than Crabtree. Also I like his experience. My favorite Receiver in next years draft…
