SBNation NFL Mock Draft, Pick 44: The Chicago Bears Select...

No. 44
Pick by Windy City Gridiron

Anthony Collins
Offensive Tackle
Kansas

After making one of the more controversial first-round selections with RB Rashard Mendenhall, WCG of Windy City Gridiron is back to make his second-round pick.  He's used the opportunity to select Kansas tackle Anthony Collins, and he joins us now to explain his decision:

The Bears selected a running back the first round in some combination of a best player/big need strategy, but in the second round with the likes of Joe Flacco and Brian Brohm off the board this pick has but one way to go.  Straight to the offensive line.   The Bears' bigger need is probably at guard; ideally, we'd like to draft Chilo Rachal. I think he is versatile and has the perfect attitude to play offensive line, but he is a bit of a reach in this part of the second round, so we look to tackle.

John Tait currently sits at the Bears' left tackle position.  Collins will allow Tait to move back to the right side where he is a better fit.  This improves the Bears at both tackle positions and gives the Bears some much needed depth.  Collins is a great athlete, with long arms and is equally as good at blocking the run as he is the pass.  He is a bit inexperienced, but has tremendous potential once he sharpens his technique.  Collins with a few years under his belt will be better than some of the tackles taken before him, but he will be needed this year to help whoever it is that lines up under center for the Bears.

Matt Miller, host of this site as well as owner of New Era Scouting, provides his analysis below:

I know that Bears fans hate me at this point, but that's okay. I like this pick of Collins. He's a very athletic tackle and is still very new to the position, having been recruited to Kansas as a defensive tackle. Collins was on my roster of players to scout this season in the Big 12, so I was able to watch him up close and personal quite a bit. He did very well against speed rushers, something he'll see a lot of in the NFC North this year as a starting left tackle.

My only criticism here is that the team needs a quarterback, badly. Chad Henne is my #3 QB, and is still on the board. Offensive tackle is more of a need, though, in my opinion. The talent here is also running dry. This pick makes the most sense, but may not appease the casual fan. Still, it's a great pick, WCG.

Grade: A  ::  Anthony Collins Scouting Report - New Era Scouting :: Matt Miller's Top Five Prospects Remaining: 1.  LB Shawn Crable, 2.  RB Jamaal Charles, 3.  WR Earl Bennett, 4.  TE Fred Davis, 5.  QB Chad Henne

No more picks today, but at 10AM Eastern tomorrow, we'll have the pick from Pride of Detroit for you.  The Detroit Lions are now on the clock.

Right pick for the Bears?
Yes! Chicago needs to revamp their O-Line for their new rookie RB.

No! Who the hell is going to play quarterback?! "Rex Grossman" is not an acceptable answer.

We don't hate you

just disagree loudly.

My theory here is that Henne and Collins probably have little shot to start, so go with the guy who has the best chance.  Henne will be behind Grossman and Orton.

At least Grossman and Orton have experience, hell, Grossman has been to a Super Bowl.

We are either old or weak everywhere on the line except center.  At least we get some depth and Collins could be an injury or poor play away from being necessary.

WCG

Please repeat after me: You will never win a Super bowl with Rex Grossman or Kyle Orton as your QB.

Knowing this (because it's pretty damn near close to the truth) why would you pass up Chad Henne, a Michigan prospect who is used to playing in frigid, Midwestern climate and who has the tools to guide an NFL team (unlike a guy like, say, Rex Grossman)?

And no, Henne would not be behind Grossman. Grossman stinks, and it's obvious. If Lovie Smith starts Grossman over Henne, Lovie Smith should be FIRED. This is seriously a no brainer.

Rex. Grossman. Is. A. Bad. QB.

I say this over and over again because it isn't getting through despite a terrible Super Bowl performance and a wretched 2007 campaign. You know I love ya, bro, but ya gotta see the light! If Rex Grossman is your starting QB in 2008, the Bears will win 6 games, max.

BBS

Repeat after me.  We will never win a Super  Bowl with Chad Henne and no RB or Line.

I am not giving support to Orton or Grossman, but Henne isn't going to cure what ails us.  A better back and a better line are much better options.

If only

If only they would have thought of that before trading their best RB...  And oh yeah, you forgot to mention you will not win without at least a serviceable WR.

Suggestion

Why not draft Henne and grab someone like OT John Greco or OG Mike McGlynn in Round 3? Both should be available for the Bears, and both are excellent o-line prospects.

I agree with you that Chad Henne behind a horrid o-line is as bad as Rex Grossman behind a bad one as well (or a good one for that matter). From your statement, I got the sense you were supporting Grossman or Orton. Sorry.

I offer this suggestion not because I think you're "stupid" or anything, but as an alternative to your draft strategy:

1st Round Pick: OG Branden Albert
2nd Round Pick: QB Chad Henne
3rd Round Pick: OT John Greco

In the first three rounds, you address o-line and QB (arguably the two biggest needs in the draft). Thoughts?
