2008 NFL Draft: Post Draft Analysis; Who Screwed Up

Let's be honest: Draft grades are dumb. Always have been, always will be. So, rather than grades, we will just go through and give our stellar opinions on who did well in the draft and who sucked hard moon rocks. We'll start with the teams that didn't have strong drafts, in my not-so-humble and often oh-so-full-of-myself opinion.

Star-divide

Musiccitymiracles_s Tennessee Titans

Taking RB Chris Johnson at pick #24 was a major reach, especially considering they drafting RB Chris Henry the year before, and Henry is in the same mold as Johnson. This means that either 1) Johnson was a reach this year, or 2) Henry was a mistake last year. either way, someone in Tennessee screwed up and wasted a first day pick. Here's New Era Scouting's take on picking Chris Johnson:

This was just a bad pick. Why pass on a wide receiver for the same player you drafted in the second round last year (Chris Henry)? I don’t see the value here, other than replacing the punt return abilities of Pacman, which they didn’t miss much last year.
The Titans desperately needed to upgrade their DE position in this draft after losing Travis LaBoy and Antwan Odom to free agency. Tennessee bypassed a player like DE Phillip Merling to take Johnson, which was likely a mistake. Tennessee did address their DE position with Jason Jones in round 2, but Merling projects better. Many did not think William Hayes would get drafted at all, and Tennessee took him in the 4th round. All in all, Tennessee addressed needs but did not seem to get good value where they picked. Jimmy, head writer at Music City Miracles, had this to say about the Chris Johnson pick:
After sleeping on it, I am not as disappointed with the Chris Johnson as I was yesterday. The worst thing about it is that the Titans are admitting that they are giving up on Chris Henry. That was a terrible pick if you are giving up on him after just 1 season.

Battleredblog_s Houston Texans

I'm sure I will get the "biased"  label because I blog for the Colts, who also happen to play in the AFC South, but Houston's draft was also unimpressive. The Texans traded down in the first round, and then, at pick #26, they reached big time for project OT Duane Brown. This seemed a "panic" pick, as other notable o-linemen were snatched up one by one in the picks just prior to Houston's. It seemed the Texans gambled that someone like Sam Baker or Jeff Otah might still be there at pick #26, and when they weren't the Texans took the highest  o-lineman on their board. The one weakness the Texans team has always had since its creation in 2002 is a BAD o-line. This line knocked David Carr around for years, and was unable to keep his replacement (Matt Schaub) healthy in 2007. Here's New Era Scouting's take on the Duane Brown pick:

Analysis: An amazing reach here. Alex Gibbs loves no-name offensive lineman, but this is a guy who could be had at least a round and a half later. Brown’s also a suspect run blocker. With Anthony Collins on board, the PERFECT zone blocking left tackle available, why over-reach for Brown.

The Texans did make some nice picks with RB Steve Slaton in round 3, LB Xavier Adibi in round 4, and DT Frank Otam in round 5. All were excellent choices. However, this is yet another in a long line of drafts were the Texans failed to significantly upgrade their o-line. Here's Tim, head writer over at Battle Red Blog, on the Duane Brown pick:

Hmmmmm. I get that the guy is allegedly a good fit for the zone blocking system, but in the first round? With Brandon Flowers, Phillip Merling, and/or Kenny Phillips available? Unless you're hooked up to a Smithiak Kool-Aid IV drip, this raises eyebrows.

Windycity_s Chicago Bears
I don't get Chicago's draft. Yes, they did a fine job addressing key issues on their o-line by taking OT Chris Williams of Vanderbilt. Drafting WR Earl Bennett and DT Marcus Harrison in round 3 was excellent, adding good players to real need positions. Chester Adams and Kirk Barton will also help Chicago rebuild their horrid o-line.

However, I will remind all of you that Rex Grossman is STILL the QB for the Bears, and while drafting RB Matt Forte' in round 2 provides them with an excellent back, the need at QB was much greater and both Brian Brohm and Chad Henne were still there. New Era on the Forte' pick:
You know how everyone loves to watch a car wreck? Bears games will be highly viewed this season. They have two capable running backs in Adrian Peterson and Cedric Benson. I like Forte’, but come on, they need a quarterback people! First coach fired in 2008: Lovie Smith. Idiot.
I disagree on Lovie Smith. I personally think he's a great coach. I also disagree on Cedric Benson. Everyone who knows football knows Benson is garbage. He's one of the biggest bust picks in recent memory (#4 overall in 2005). Forte' is a significant upgrade over Benson both in ability and character. However, you win and lose in this league with your QB play, and Rex Grossman just cannot get it done. Bypassing Brohm and Henne sends a clear signal that the Bears are sticking with Grossman, and that is a major mistake. Here's WCG, head honcho over at Windy City Gridiron:
Forte is not as easy of a pick to justify. The Bears had many other options to consider. Texas wide receiver Limas Swee was mocked by most in the first round, to pick him up in the 2nd would have given whoever the Bears decide to start at QB a big target to go after. Also two QBs, Louisville's Brian Brohm and Michigan's Chad Henne were both on the board. Both almost fell to the Bears in the third, but a late mini run at the end of the 2nd took them both off the board.

The pick brings into question Cedric Benson's role with the Bears. Forte really isn't a complement player, he is more of a take over the job guy. Are the Bears prepared to set Benson adrift? Does this mean the Bears will carry 4 running backings going into the 08 season?

Here is all I can give you on the lack of

drafting a QB. No QB in this draft was going to start. Period. Peyton Manning started as a rookie and threw like 27 INTS and he is a great QB. At least the guys we have know the play book and are used to NFL speed.

The Bears QB situation would have been a train wreck with or without Flacco, Henne or Brohm. So while this doesn’t speak well of the future, it really has no affect on next season.

Forte on the other hand is an immediate improvement. If we can become a dangerous team at the run again, all of the sudden our passing game opens up a little bit. With a quality run game, a hopefully return to form D and great special teams all our passing game has to be is sufficient.

The Bears did sign 2 QBs...

and Mel seems high on the kid from Colorado State. The signings from across the league are listed here.

I see the point that no college QB would start, but the Bears need to develop someone. If one of the undrafted guys turns out to be of NFL quality, then so be it.

Hanie

Hanie’s a nice QB, but all 32 teams passed on him for 7 rounds for a reason. To expect him to come in and be a starter is not fair. He’s a project pick.

Ignoring the QB position was odd, but the Bears addressed many of their other needs. They can take consolation in the fact that the ‘09 class is deep at QB.

Again though

that does nothing to address the need for a QB next year much like drafting a QB in this draft wouldn’t have done anything to help this year. If Grossman and Orton cannot get it done behind a better line and a better run game then the Bears still do not have a QB for next season.

Completely agree

Might be time to address the position via free agency and the draft. I’m not sure what the Bears plan is for the QB position, or if they have one.

I wish I knew

even when guys like McNabb and Anderson were up in the air, the Bears didn’t even seem interested.

You Are Dead Wrong on the Bears

Teams do win without a QB. We did make a Superbowl two years ago, the Ravens won without a QB, it does happen, but the key is a superb defense and a QB that doesn’t turn the ball over. It also helps to get great field position and points from ST’s and from you D. Did we loose the Superbowl? Yes. Did as well as we had played all year? No. We laid an egg. Had we played a good or great game, everyone would be talking differently.

If QB is a problem this year, we can bring in a solid vet to manage the game next year while we wait for a draft pick to blossom. I’‘m sure Pennington is close to on his way out! Simms will probably be available soon. Maybe Jake the Snake will come out of retirement.

Wow

Chris Simms and Jake Plummer. A couple of franchise quarterbacks there.

If a quarterback is not important, why does every team other than Chicago constantly stress having two capable players on the roster? Would Indianapolis win without Peyton Manning? Would New England without Tom Brady? The quarterback is and always will be the most important player on the field.

Oh Yeah!

To me you basically brag on the entire draft of the Bears. The only problem you have is with not drafting a QB. Did you ever think that maybe we did so well at the other positions because we didn’t waste a pick on a QB that wasn’t very special to begin with. Our team will be better this year because we didn’t waste a pick on a QB and instead picked up players in rounds 1-4 who will play this year and will probably be very productive starters this year or next. That is something we could not be certain of with these QB’s. See you week 1.

Homerism

You should look that word up.

If the Bears passed on drafting what you call a mediocre quarterback class, they still have a huge need at the position. There are no viable free agents available and this is a team which is relying on a rookie left tackle, running back and wide receiver.

Wrong

We are relying a our defense to get healthy. Our offensive line to be a little more respectable. Forte to be a better RB than Benson. And Rex or Kyle to have a little more time in the pocket. With 28th rank defense we were almost .500. When are defense is healthy we will be top 10 again or better.

Because you are not a Chicago fan, you probably are unaware that we played without 7 starters on our defense. We screwed up by picking up Archaleta. He sucked and will not see any quality playing time. We went through 6 different defensive tackles because of injury. Our secondary had 3 guys miss almost the whole year. Picking up depth at defense is important for our team this year than a QB on our bench.

I guess you’d rather us mail it in this year even their we Bearly missed the playoffs.

Wrong?

So you aren’t relying on a rookie LT, RB and WR? That was my point. This is a young team on offense if Benson doesn’t start, with Grossman or Orton at QB and with Earl Bennett likely to be the #1 WR. Greg Olsen is a 2nd yr player and will be the best receiving threat on the team.

Is your opinion then that the Bears can win with Orton/Grossman at QB?

That is not the depth at WR

It is more likely that it will be Marty Booker a veteran at #1. It will then be either Hester or Bradley at #2.

The Bears are looking to get Hester more into the passing game. He will be getting many more plays then last year. I believe they have a goal for him to be a starter and a 100 yard a game guy by the end of the year. Will that happen? Who knows? Bradley is a third year player with lots of upside. He is fast and knows the playbook. He got reduced time last year because the expanded time that Hester and Olsen received. Bennet is going to be a slot receiver. Look for him in 3 WR sets. He will not start unless he blows it up at training camp, which I doubt will happen.

I expect the Bears to feature two tight end sets often with Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen. Clark is our most reliable weapon and apparently you forgot about him. He has averaged more yards per catch over the last two years then any other TE. He is clutch. Olsen will getting more catches this year. He will get more time because of more 2 TE sets and he will also be put in the slot or wide from here and there. He will also be featured in the goaline for jump balls.

Marty Booker #1, Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark are very good weapons, Hester, Bradley, and Bennet will be in development. Hester will be a threat on every play to go deep and score. He caught two bombs last year and dropped two more in very limited playing time. The guy is simply scary. He will get a couple of deep throws every game. I would give him 3-4, but look for 2 per game.

Yes we have a rookie LT. It is a hope that our line improves. I don’t think it will be worse.

We will win, not because of a great offense, but because our defense is healthier. We were 3rd in the league with injured starters and none of those injuries were on offense. This is the reason we also drafted some depth on defense to help in case of injury. We win in Chicago with defense and Hester giving us great field position and some big plays helps as well.

You're obviously a Hester fan

but thinking of him as a #2 WR at this point is pure fantasy. As a WR he has one asset: speed. While he is incredibly fast, that is only one aspect of being a quality WR. His route-running sucks. His hands are questionable (he does seem to fumble regularly). He can basically run very fast in a straight line and hope the QB puts the ball on the money. He’ll need to learn a lot more before he is anything other than a decoy or 3rd/4th receiver to open up the field.

by ctnyc on May 5, 2008 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the Bears

will make him the number two so he is on the field more. Do I think he is a #2? No. He needs a lot of work. I believe they are going to try to get him as many plays as possible this year to get him more experience and are hoping they can see enough growth to say this guy on his own is a starter either a #1 or #2. Really the guy has so much talent with his legs and vision that the other weaknesses are worth dealing with. Bears don’t need to score 30 points. We need about 20 points to win. If he can give us a TD a game through either kickoffs or a long reception. That helps our team. His hand aren’t suspect, their not good. He isn’t a great receiver at all, but he should because his skills are so low it has a lot of area to grow. He may never be a 10, but when you start at a 2 and rise to a 6 in different categories like route running, you look much better. He could do that this year. Combine that with his speed and he is worth having on the field.

He also opens up the game for the rest of the guys on the field because people have to be worried about the deep pass on every play. That will help our offense. So no he isn’t great, but he good become much better with some more playing time. He is pretty scary right now as a bad WR, imagine if he becomes ok. We should have two quality TE’s on the field that are very good receiving threats and another WR like Marty Booker on the field as well.
