Rookie Wide Receivers

For the first time since the common draft began, the first round ended without a wide receiver having been selected. As explained by the fellas over at Cold, Hard Football Facts, first-round wide receivers often turn out to be busts. Of the 43 wide outs taken in the first round over the past ten years, only two have had 1,000-yard rookie seasons: Randy Moss (1998) and Michael Clayton (2005). The last time a rookie had a 1,000-yard seasons was Marques Colston in 2006, a seventh-round pick.

Still, historically -- as with every other position -- a vast majority of the highly-talented receivers come from the first round. Since none were taken in this year's draft, we'll look for a 1,000-yard receiver from the second round and beyond. Here I'll outline the wide receivers of this year's class that I think will have the most impact this season:

1. Devin Thomas: Although he will play second fiddle to Santana Moss, he should be able to overtake Antwaan Randle El on the depth chart. He is the perfect fit for the west coast offense that new head coach Jim Zorn will run. He will favor the pass like his mentor, Mike Holmgren, and Devin Thomas will reap the benefits of that. With Jason Campbell's big arm and a plethora of other skill players, Thomas should have a huge season.

2. James Hardy: The Bills are going to feature Hardy predominantly in the offense. Opposite of Lee Evans, they don't have an established threat at wide receiver (Josh Reed and Roscoe Parrish are the top two), and they don't have a strong tight end. Young quarterback Trent Edwards will look to Hardy frequently as his safety blanket. A 6-foot-7, 220-pound product, he will definitely be able to fill that role.

3. Andre Caldwell: Although he slid a little bit further than he expected in the draft, he should out-produce his rookie teammate, Jerome Simpson. His wide receivers coach called him "more cable ready" than Simpson. He ran a 4.35 forty-yard dash at the combine, and he was amazingly dynamic after the catch at the University of Florida. He should be the third receiver behind Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

4. Limas Sweed: Ben Roethlisberger asked for a bigger target before the draft, and he got one with Limas Sweed. The Steelers have a pair of starters with Santonio Holmes and Hines Ward, but they featured three-wide receiver sets regularly last season. Sweed should fit into the role as the third wide receiver, and he should quickly become a favorite target of Roethlisberger.

The 2008 WR group was very similar to 2006, I think..

It wasn’t anything to get excited about, but you had a holdover consensus top prospect in Limas Sweed going into the draft (similar to Santonio Holmes in 2006), then a workout warrior that overtook him during the off season prior to the draft, Devin Thomas (similar to Chad Jackson from 2006).

The fact that Marques Colston ended up being the best receiver from that draft to this point, (as a 7th round pick) probably was a big reason that teams were slow to reach for them in 2008. The next best pass catcher from that draft (so far) has probably been second round RB Maurice Jones-Drew, although Holmes showed some good stuff last year. Add that onto the erratic performance of the WR taken in the first round of the 2005 draft (Mike Williams, Troy Williamson, Matt Jones).

Early Doucet

What kind season do you project for him?

Seems like he’s coming into an awful good situation considering he won’t see anything better than a team’s #3 corner lined up against him and he should spend most of his time in the slot.

I like Doucet, but...

Most of the time, the Cards see either Boldin or Fitzgerald double teamed, and the other one who is not racks up his yards. If you look at Bryant Johnson, who is a proven commodity in this league, he caught 528 yards and 2 touchdowns last season. So I would say to expect maybe a couple of more touchdowns and a little bit fewer yards, but for his production to be roughly the same. I think he will be a good fit for the offense, and he might be the No. 2 in a couple of years if they trade one of the big two.

I checked the link you left...

It’s full of crap, you must realize that. They have Santonio Holmes, after two seasons listed as a “disappointment” as the #25 pick overall in the first round, and Braylon Edwards, after three seasons, listed two categories higher as a “star” after being the #3 overall pick a year earlier. Problem is Holmes, who is a year younger than Edwards had more catches, more yards, more TDs, better YPC average, through his first two seasons than Edwards did. I think that Santonio had the best YPC average in the league last season, and scored 10 TDs despite missing a few games at the end of the season. How can you categorize a player with those numbers a “disappointment” when he just turned 24 a couple of months back?

I don’t think any of the rookie WR will have a 1000 yd season. Most take a few years to learn how to run routes, and read defenses on the fly. Of the 4 mentioned I think Hardy will have the best impact. He has Evans to draw the doube team, a strong running game and will be a danger in the red zone and on 3rd downs due to his size.

For overall potential, I really like Nelson. The kid tore up the Big 12, even while being the focus of defenses. He’s a perfect fit for the WCO run by the Packers, and is a real student of the game. He eats, sleeps and drinks football… All football, All the time!!! I don’t trust Thomas to turn into a player. And Sweed will be stuck playing second fiddle to the Steelers running game, Just like Plax… Caldwell is a Fl. Gator and until even one of them turns into a player I would never draft one much less think he will produce in the NFL…

Dwayne Bowe

I should mention Bowe had 995 yards receiving.

Not a 1,000 yard season, but I doubt anybody would complain about his performance.

None of The Above

I love that Strohman beat me here to put up a good word for Jordy Nelson. Right now it looks like the Packers will use him as their home run hitter, run deep and go high for the ball, but I expect his production will be inconsistent as a rookie. Still he might have a long TD reception or two early next season that will get some attention.

I don’t get Devin Thomas and James Hardy. Thomas reminds me of ex-Packer/current Viking Robert Ferguson; a juco transfer who played one solid season at a big school who gets drafted in the 2nd round and never lives up to his billing. I watched a lot of Wisconsin Badger football games, and they always seemed to have no trouble containing Hardy when they played Indiana. I wonder if Hardy got most his college yards in non-conference games, and often folded once he hit the Big 10 schedule.

I'm surprised there is no love for DeSean Jackson

I know most people don’t even expect to see him play other than returning kicks and that may be the reason. But there is still a chance this kid gets some slot action and if he plays well in pre-season he might get some real snaps this year.
