Question for outsiders?
So I'm a Bears fan and I wanted some outside feedback to get a better perspective on my team. Feel free to give as much or little explanation as you want.
Does losing Cedric Benson make our running game better or worse?
Who would the be best for the Bears to start, Rex or Kyle?
Will Devin Hester be any factor as a WR this year (they say they are going to triple his play time this year)?
How many games do you predict the Bears to win?
Do we have a good or bad GM?
Thanks. You never know what people from other teams think. I'd be willing to comment from the outside on your team as well. I think it gives you better perspective.

I'll have a go
I don’t think it will make any difference. He hasn’t really been a contributor, but he wasn’t awful to the extent that losing him is a plus.
Once again, very little distinction one way or the other.
Hester will make an impact. I fear, however, that involving him in so many more plays will greatly detract from his peerless abilities in the return game. We saw it happen with Dante Hall, for one.
8 games. If that defense is healthy, they will carry the team.
A fairly decent GM. The Bears seem to have taken some absolute franchise cornerstones, but squandered some premium picks like Benson and to a lesser level Columbo.

My take
- I think losing Benson will hurt them only from the aspect that he’s decent when he’s not a number one. If they’re rookie RB took some pressure off, I could see him having as good of a year as he had during their SB run
- Six, one way, half a dozen the other. Neither would scare me at all.
- Hester will only be a factor if he’s able to develop some other route than a go. I could be wrong but it seems like all he did was streak down the field. I also agree with Budlight that it’ll take something away from his return game.
- 6-8. I think it’ll depend on how good or bad Aaron Rogers and Tavaris Jackson. If those QB are decent the Bears could go 1-4 against them or if they stink the Bears could go 3-1.
- Decent GM. I question his refusal to find even an average QB, but that’s my only beef about him.

A try
I love Forte so if he’s as good as I think getting Capt. Cedric out of his way immediately is a good thing.
“Sometimes good, sometimes spectacularly awful” vs “consistently very bad” pick your poison
Any good returnman scares me as a Colts fan, Hester especially. My first though on the superbowl after the Colts won that great AFC Championship Game was “I really hope they don’t kick to Hester.” As a WR I’m not worried about Hester much, maybe on some screens since Darren Sproles killed them as a returner/speedy 3rd down back last year.
They have to find the balance where they get the most out of him, without hurting his return game.
6 wins, but that’s where I had the Packers last year (the team furthest I was off on obviously)
Built a great D and an offense good enough to take them to a SB, so average to good.
They ball when they can and I'm ballin' by nature
Addicted to the game like Jordan and Peyton

I understand why you would say 6 wins,
but we won 7 with half a defense. We also went to the Superbowl with a full defense minus Mike Brown. I think it would be more fair to say we may be somewhere in between. I do realize the offense could be worse without Berrian, but it could be better as well. They were 28 in the league last year. There’s plenty of room to move up.

Thanks to everyone who is commenting
I spend a lot of time talking to fans of my team who are usually very pessimistic or very optimistic and this really helps to get a more realistic view.
I’m surprised that many think our GM, Jerry Angelo, is a decent GM. He gets so much crap and deservedly on the Thomas Jones trade and drafting Benson and Rex that I wasn’t sure. I like him personally. Some of his risks have not worked out like the moves mentioned above, but if they had he’d been a genius, that is kind of how it goes. I like how he has done in the mid to late rounds, how he has handled contracts negotiations, not over paying FA’s, etc. I’m really upset that he didn’t sign a FA lineman this year though. Some may also point to us loosing Berrian, but he is not worth the money the Vikings game him. I’m positive we gave a nice offer to him, but let’s be real. Berrian isn’t worth 8 million a year. That’s nuts.

I loved Forte going into the draft
great pick. Him and Wolfe should make a nice tandem. (Notice how I left Benson out of the equation)
Hester has yet to prove he can play well at the WR position. I’ll believe it when I see it.
Orton just sucks pure and simple. At least Rex can have good games from time to time.
Bears are in a relatively tough division. I see them going 7-9.

hmmm
- Losing Benson won’t make a difference the not so famous A.P. isn’t that bad
- Sexy Rexy is a disaster you never really know what is going to happen, but Kyle is nothing but a step sideways, you don’t get any better or worse.
- I think Hester expected to be a great WR because he is a great athlete. Now that he knows it will take some adjustments and work I would expect him to make a difference.
- The bears are playing a lot of teams with question marks even in there own division. I would see 7-9 but could be better if the real Bears Defense comes to play.
- The only think I can fault your GM for is sticking with Rex, let’s get one thing straight your Defense took you to the superbowl not Rex, he should have been dumped or at least a better backup than Kyle Orton should have been acquired.

you asked ,
losing Benson may help your team because of all the distractions he would bring with him- he was not good enough to make it worth the hassle for your team Maybe Culpepper is still available . If you play Hester at wr it will hurt your return game immensely , plus you had better hope with his small frame he can take the extra pounding or your team will be in big trouble- he was alot of scoring for your team last year. I predict 6-10 because of your defense but even they will wear down by the end of the year. As far as your GM goes , we all make mistakes- give him some more time to see if he can build a team the BEARS fans can be proud of for a long time. When i predicted 6-10 , just know that I took no pleasure in that , the BEARS will ALWAYS be 1 of my favorite teams Good Luck this year. Go BEARS !

I realize the offense has the potential to be very bad, but
we were 13-3 twice recently because of outstanding defensive seasons. Maybe a lot of people don’t know but the year Kyle was a rookie, he never through the ball over 2 yards. We probably averaged 16 points a game that year and we were scoring half of that on D. I think a lot of people need to give great defenses more credit. If we can be great on D, we should win 9 minimum. Look at the Ravens. They are similar in that they have never had a good offense, but made the playoffs regularly. Will our D be great… I don’t know. They are definitely much deeper this season. I do think it could be a bad year as well, but only if the D is banged up. A healthy Bears D means at least .500.
I will say that Hester was probably better last season as a returner than his first. No one wanted to give him the ball and he broke his own record for returns for TDs. That is amazing. He did it while also playing offense. The guy is still getting better. I think if his return game suffers, you’ll see him get less reps on offense.

Bears D
A rebuttal to your argument that the defense can carry this team could be that this is the exact same unit that led the team to Super Bowl a couple of years ago. That could be a good thing but it also means that the defense is getting older. I don’t follow the Bears daily like you do obviously but looking back at their past two drafts (since the Super Bowl), I don’t see any name that I even recognize on the defensive side of the ball. Age is a terrible thing and it looks like it’s creeping into the Bears defense.
Also couldn’t an argument be made that the Bears were the best team in the NFC at a time when the rest of the conference was very, very weak. The NFC North (namely the Pack and Vikes) may have made the biggest strides since then.

The division was definitely weaker.
I agree there, but not “as weak” as everyone thought. I think we had a wild card team in at least one of those years as well. Still weak none the less, but we beat good teams that last season including the playoff run.
The defense isn’t as old as you might think. The Ravens have some age, but Urlacher is the only old guy and we never have Brown, so I pretend he doesn’t exist. Briggs, Tommie, Vasher, and Tillman other parts of that core just signed their second contract of their career within the last two seasons. We also have 2 LB that were drafted day 1 that haven’t played yet, a very good young DT, that had the injury bug that hopefully will disappear and we drafted a really good safety and DT this year. The DT was projected as a first round talent until he had a midseason injury. Matt has mentioned him many times. His name is Marcus Harrison.
The D is basically full of guys hitting their prime with tons of young quality backups. The reason our offense has been so poor is we just keep drafting defensive guys with 60-70% of our picks.

just a teaser ,
wouldn’t it be funny if Favre came out of retirement and came to the BEARS , the packers do not want him , so he could pay them back and give the BEARS a quarterback for 1 year . You do have a great defense if your offense can take some pressure off of them , but they are getting older and hopefully Urlacher’s back holds up – my Broncos team last year was devastated by injuries and I don’t wish that upon any team or player but it is a reality of the sport we all love so dearly.

I've considered that too.
I have no idea how I would feel about that. In one way I hate Brett, and in another way it would be great to stick it to the Packers. I also would like the offense to be better. Honestly I don’t know if Brett makes it better. We need a game manager because our defense wins games for us not explosive offense. Turnovers could cost us and our offense is not as good as GB right now either.
