Overall, I thought this was a pretty good evaluation of the league. I could have squabbled with a few more than these, but really thought they were debateable arguments and I could see why they would be ranked where they were. I think there may be some rookies that are given a pretty high ranking, but overall it was a good list. Here are a few I would have differently and why.

Trent Green – 6
Eli Manning – 7
David Carr – 5
Sage Rosenfells – 5
Carson Palmer – 9
David Gerrard – 8

A couple notes:
- I know that many people think that Eli is something special, but his stats are nearly identical to Rex Grossman’s except that he has a better OL and receivers and he is a year older and has more experienced. He has played many more games then Rex, so you would think he would be better, but the stats say otherwise. The one thing that he has done differently is he got hot for 5 straight games to end the season and that does count for something. Hopefully that streak was the beginning of a new Eli, but the Eli before those 5 games wasn’t good, imo.

- I think very highly of Carson Palmer and think him and Drew Brees are just below Peyton and Tom status. He did have some high turnover games last year, but I still think Carson is a top 4 QB in the league.

- David Gerrard may only have one good season under his belt, but the low interceptions was pretty special. I think that managing the game exceptionally bumps you higher than than most QB’s in the league. Oh and he had a very poor WR group. I will say that I saw several plays that he was lucky wasn’t interecepted, but I still rank this guy a little higher.

- Sage has to be at least even to be wanted by several teams. People aren’t going to be pushing for a guy who is a 4-5. He performed very well in fill in duty and looks to have the makings of a solid QB like his predecessor, Matt Shaub.

- For David Carr I was tempted to make him even lower. This guy is terrible now. He never became that great in the first place, but now his confidence is completely rocked and is not even worth being on the bench. You might as well give the playing time to someone with upside because, David Carr could not move the ball at all last season.

Trent Greene

Maybe he is low because of concussions and playing time. I just think the guy through for 4 straight 4,000 yard seasons with poor receivers, aside from Gonzo. That was pretty special. I think the guy has some game left and is at least average, but maybe the big hits were the reason. Skill wise he is probably a 7 comparable to K. Warner.

Thanks

I really like David Garrard, and I believe this came up on New Era as well. I want to see more consistency from him. I think he’ll continue to rise, but I’m a skeptic when someone has one good year. But… I did rank Derek Anderson as an 8. So, go figure.

Eli is only an 8 because of the Super Bowl. I’m thinking he’ll have more confidence now. His stats are quite a bit better than Grossman, but like you said he has a completely different supporting cast.

I love Carson Palmer, I just want less interceptions. He’s top 5 in my book.

Trent Green is just too old and injury prone for me. He had a chance last year in Miami and couldn’t get it done.

David Carr confuses the hell out of me. Amazing pure talent, but a chronic over-thinker. I pray for him daily. David Carr will go down as my worst draft prediction ever… I hope.

I wonder if Sage is a one-game wonder or a legit starter. A quarterback can light up teams who are not prepared for him. The only way to test this would be to allow him a long stretch as a starter where teams are game planning for him.

Great points.

I really don’t like Eli though and I think it is because he doesn’t get hammered as hard as Rex. He does some, but not calling for his job every game. I think Eli may break out this year, but I thought that last year. Maybe not having Shockey wining in the huddle helped, who knows.

David Carr will not put it together. It is over for him.

Agreed on Carson. I think with less pressure on the offense to score 45 points a game, he would do much better.

I think what Garrard did last season had to be skill. It is too hard to protect the ball that well in the NFL. I saw some missed opportunities by defenders, but I think the guy is for real. Derrick Anderson on the other hand, hmmm. I can’t say for sure. Maybe? He sure was amazing last year.

You know who doesn’t impress me is Donovan McNabb. I really think he is two steps back from the old Donovan, but he still gets a lot of credit. Westbrook makes that offense happen. Of course his receivers were horrible last year.

I was surprised to see Bulger that high. I would have put him there too, but most people don’t pay attention to him because he isn’t a big name. The guy is very good. Last year had to be an injury thing for him or an OL issue. He looked like a completely different guy. He should be back this year.

Jared Zabransky PIT 3
Dennis Dixon PIT 3

Matt, do you like Dixon’s chances in the NFL? He should be brought along very slowly in Pitt and he’ll most likely to go some where else if he ever wants to start, but his athleticism is scary. Could he be the next ‘Matt Schaub-type’ meaning a solid backup for several seasons before some teams gives him a chance to start after his fourth year in the league or so?

Good question

I do and I don’t. I liked Dixon at Oregon, but I’m nervous about his knee and ability to adjust to an NFL offense after playing 2 years in a spread option attack.

no way Hasselbeck or Bress

should have a higher grade than Romo, Palmer or Roethlisberger

In Romo we Trust

Romo hasn't even won a playoff game or had more than two full seasons of play.

Palmer and Roethlisberger are close but Hassleback carried the team offensively basically by himself last year. I don’t think Roethlisberger could do that. Palmer hasn’t seemed as good as he was when the Bengals went to the playoff in my opinion because of he tore his acl and I believe he has taken some steps back.
