NFL Tight End Rankings

** Please note that the grades given are our own. Each player is ranked in order of who we would want as our starting tight end for the 2008 NFL Season only. We have taken in to account age, production and potential in grading the players below. Statistics are not listed for tight ends, due to some being primarily blocking players. Only drafted rookies are listed. **

Your rankings indicate that you feel the TE position..

..is primarily a pass catching role. That is not true for all teams, and the most efficient tight end is not necessarily the one who catches 100 balls but never has to block. Personally I would rank the multi talented TEs like Heath Miller a lot higher. Miller should be at or near the top of the list.

TEs are hard

Do you want a great in-line blocker or a guy like Dallas Clark who can play pretty much a full season at WR in a pinch?

It depends on the offense you’re running and the talent around them. I would hate to have to make a list like this one.

Huh?

“Statistics are not listed for tight ends, due to some being primarily blocking players.”

Miller is ranked 8th overall despite being the youngest person in the top 10.

Adding that little qualifier doesn't change anything..

..you’ve still given overwhelming preferance to pass catching tight ends in your rankings.

by robert ethan on Jun 9, 2008 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As would most, if not all, NFL teams. In the 60’s a blocking tight end was valuable, but in today’s NFL with 32 teams placing more emphasis on a passing game than anything, a tight end who can catch is more valuable.

Why was Vernon Davis a top 10 pick? His hands, he didn’t know how to block.

I am not placing emphasis on pass catchers, the NFL is.

Steelers Fan.

I like Heath Miller as much as any one else, but the rankings make sense. Mine would be a little different, but the gist is the same: Heath Miller misses the top 5 just barely.

Please check out my blog at http://thefulldeck.blogspot.com/ , now redesigned and recommited!

Miller's "hands" are as good as anyone ahead of him..

Better than Vernon Davis by a long shot. What he lacks is the deep speed that some of the others have. Plus he works in an offense that tries to balance the pass and the run. I would argue that Miller and a few others in the league who can catch and block are the most valuable because they keep the defense guessing. I think Heath had one of the best ypc averages of all tight ends last season and over his career, and his touchdown ratio per pass thrown to him is among the best as well.

Miller

I’m just as big of a fan of Miller as any Steelers fan but his ranking is pretty accurate as far as I’m concerned. Any argument that pass catching tight ends goes out the window when you consider that Kellen Winslow was ranked 9th.

You’ll also notice robert that every tight end from 4 to 11 are given an ‘8’ grade so the actual order of those guys are semantics. It’s pretty hard to argue against the premise that Gates is in a league by himself followed closely by Gonzalez and Witten and then a cluster-F in the third tier.

by cgolden on Jun 10, 2008 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Miller is an asset to the passing and the running game, though..

You can’t say that about too many of the others. Assume that the passing game isn’t working, or the top quarterback is out, or your team has a lead and wants to run out the clock. Gates, Gonzalez, Winslow, Davis, etc., are pretty much useless then. Teams that throw to the tight end a lot also take something away from their wide receivers. Except for those teams that live and die by the pass, and throw the ball 70% of the time, which I don’t think is a long term prescription for success. If you have a tight end who is a solid blocker and reliable receiver, he makes everyone else in the offense more effective. He can pass block most of the time to give the QB a little more time to find the WRs, run block for the backs, and work as a receiver when the situation dictates. Gates, Gonzalez, Winslow, and Davis are pretty much the primary passing targets every time they are on the feild, and defenses prepare for that.

Chris Cooley

Should be above Todd Heap and Jeremy Shockey. I think he’s been more consistent then the other two and who’s throwing the ball to Heap?

How can you put rookies on this list?

They would have to be based on potential, which would mean they are being judged on different things. They should be removed from the list.

by xSAMx on Jun 15, 2008 5:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Or...

They are based on draft position and college production! Brilliant, I know.

Shockey just based on talent is top 5, but he proved to be detriment to the NYG. It wasn’t until he was out for the season that the Giants took off, and Eli started to play well. Based on that I would drop him down quite a bit. W-II should be higher. He really played a big role in Clevelands resurgence the last 2 years. I would move Lee ahead of such luminaries as M. Lewis, Z. Miller, McMichael and Crumpler. I would say about the same as Daniels, Watson and Graham.

Wow, you don't know anything about Desmond Clark

I understand age and all that, but you simply do not know anything about the player if you have him ranked that low.

The guy is an outstanding blocker and a big play outlet. He consitently makes big catches. He started over the #1 pick in the draft for the whole season. There was a reason he didn’t give up his job. The guys if very good. Put him on a team with Peyton, Tom, Carson, etc. and he would spank most of the guys on this list. He is definitely top 15. I understand why Olsen is over him because of age and Olsen should have a breakout year, but I could go down that list and barf on most of those TE’s. McMichael is a ball boy compared to Clark. According to your list he wouldn’t start on any NFL team. Please! I’m not being a home here. I’m not saying he is unbelievable, but he’s just outside of elite and has 3 more years in him. I’d want him over some loser that will be below average and inconsistent fo the next 5 years.

Ok forget the Bears. Kellen Winslow should be number 1 in my opinion. He is almost as talented as Gates and Gonzalez, but much younger. Honestly, there needs to be more of a reason for this list then that generic title. Injury is not enough of a reason to have Winslow that low. That’s embarrassing.

BTW

I know your job of ranking is so hard and I don’t envy what you are trying to do, but the way that is posted with little understanding of how some of the players ended up there, is not journalistically responsible. I only say that because I think you take your research seriously.

Okay

Clark is 31 years old. He is not the overall player or receiving threat that the players above him are, nor does he have the raw potential of the younger players. You’re disputing a player who will be a back up to Greg Olsen this year, if not also to Kellen Davis in passing situations. The Bears like Clark so much they have drafted a tight end two consecutive years!

The homerism I see on this blog is beyond anything I had ever thought possible. Objectivity is out the window when it comes to most Bears, Colts or Cowboys fans who post on MTD.

Why can’t two season ending injuries, plus off-season speculation about health and if he’d show up to camp hurt Winslow? I know the Bears aren’t good at judging character, but it’s something I take into account when scouting. You want to talk about embarrassing: Cedric Benson, Curtis Enis, Rashaan Salaam, Tank Johnson, Rex Grossman and trying to make Marty Booker a viable receiver at age 32 after his last good year coming in ‘02. I was a college freshman that year for crying out loud!

by MattMiller on Jun 27, 2008 4:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You are so in love with yourself to consider someone elses opinion.

What are you even talking about Booker, Rashaan Salaam, Enis and the others. That is how stupid this argument is. We are talking about who is a good TE, not can the Bears make Booker into a receiver again.

Kellen Davis was drafted to replace John Gilmore who was our blocking TE (we carry 3) who left via free agency. Olsen was drafted because we needed more weapons on offense and the Bears were thinking that Clark will be retiring in the next few years. Olsen is more of a receiving threat, than Clark, but honestly Clark is very dangerous. Olsen was also one of the best talents on the board at that point. Yes he was drafted to replace Clark, in the future. As great as you think Olsen is, and of course I like him a lot too, he still was the backup last season. Why do you think that is?????

Probably because Clark is better. Maybe not as fast as Olsen, but he can do it all and Olsen is primarily a receiving threat and needs to work on his blocking. I’ve never seen Clark drop a single pass in the last 2 seasons where he has performed so well. He makes big plays on offense and is a strength to the team as a blocker. Go look at his offensive stats, he is top 10 the last 2 seasons. Not bad for the 42nd guy on your list.

Your dead wrong about Clark. Why don’t you ask someone has seen the Bears play a game about Clark and get their opinion. The guy makes big plays in clutch situations and never screws it up. He is consitently good. And if you are comparing him to Olsen only then your list is a lie. You said who do you want starting on your team this season. I think I would pick a guy who blocks and catches, Never drops the ball, makes huge plays in critical games, and is a 10 receiving threat in the league. By the way, Gonzo and Gates are older then Clark. I think the dude has some years left in him he’s 31, 37.

Address the issues

You said yourself that “Olsen was drafted because we needed more weapons on offense and the Bears were thinking that Clark will be retiring in the next few years.”

This is the reason that Clark is low on the list. He has very little time left in the League and has never been impressive in my eyes. The Bears continue to draft players to replace him.

Also, you seem to chime in on every article with a Bears comment, but where were you on the team needs or other posts? It’s easy to criticize, hard to produce.

I come and go.

I’m around for a week or two and read and post on what I think is interesting. There are other weeks where I don’t come back for a week or two because I’m very busy. If there were more articles posted daily, I would be here more often. Also, if people would debate more, I would be here as well. I also have posted on needs for the Bears in the past and people’s draft projections to help them with the list in a constructive way based on my knowledge of the team and management.

Back to Clark one more time around. It was my understanding that this was based on who you would want to start for your team this year. Des Clark appears to have 2-3 good seasons in him and would be worth having start this year. His offensive numbers are really the only ones you can follow and I believe they will show you that. You have second stringers on bad TE teams ahead of him. That is my major problem. You maybe haven’t seen anything impressive from him, but that is because offensively we don’t go to him every game. Now that boggles us Bears fans because he is outstanding. Then again Ron Turner is probably one of the worst OC’s in the league, but somehow has a job for the Bears. That I don’t understand. Even when he isn’t catching the ball, he is an outstanding blocker.

Olsen was picked primarily to be a receiving TE. Kellen Davis was drafted to be primarily a blocking TE and Clark is good at both. Because of his versatility he was the starter last year. Everytime Olsen comes into the game, they assume we’re passing. If Olsen improves his blocking, he will pass Clark, but we run first in Chicago and blocking is important here. Clark would be the starting TE IMO on probably 15-20 NFL teams. He would be an even greater receiving threat than he is if he had a real QB, yet he is still dangerous w/o one.

I don’t understand how age plays into who you want starting this year. Gates and Gonzo are much older than Olsen and are high because they are excellent players. Clark is also an excellent player.

You're right, he sucks. Des Clark is at best a third string TE on most teams for this year.

Now granted this was only fantasy rankings and shows offensive production, but since there are no stats to say anything about his blocking, I’ll at least show this to those who don’t know much about Desmond Clark.

This is also a guy who had to share time with a first round draft choice last season. Without this guy on his back (which most teams in the league don’t have two guys this good at TE), he would have seen even more production. Oh yeah and everyone wants to say how bad our QB’s our and he performs like this. You all need to quit talking and start bringing in some more facts.

http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/leaders?seasonId=2007&slotCategoryId=6

I think there are some good QB’s who would make him look even better. I also think a lot of teams are looking for a TE who would be thrilled to make him their starter this season. Um, New Orleans comes to mind among others.

Okay

Age: The older a player gets, the more susceptible he is to injury. He also begins to slow down. Look at Shaun Alexander for example.

Clark is not an excellent player. No one outside Chicago would ever categorize him as being one. The first story on the home page right now asks readers to rank the TEs. I imagine not one Chicago fan will put him inside the top 20-25. An excellent player should be top 5 at his position. Clark is an average player on a terrible offensive team.

Clark also could not start on 15-20 teams. Let’s see:

Buffalo: Would start over Robert Royal (1)
Miami: Would start over David Martin (2)
New England: Ben Watson
New York Jets: Dustin Keller (rookie)/Chris Baker
Baltimore: Todd Heap
Cincinnati: Possibly start over Reggie Kelly (3)
Cleveland: Kellen Winslow II
Pittsburgh: Heath Miller
Houston: Owen Daniels
Indianapolis: Dallas Clark
Jacksonville: Marcedes Lewis
Tennessee: Bo Scaife/Alge Crumpler
Denver: Daniel Graham
Kansas City: Tony Gonzalez
Oakland: Zach Miller
San Diego: Antonio Gates

Dallas: Jason Witten
New York Giants: Jeremy Shockey/Kevin Boss
Philadelphia: LJ Smith
Washington: Chris Cooley
Chicago: Greg Olsen (we’ll count this one- 4)
Detroit: Would start over Michael Gaines (5)
Green Bay: Donald Lee
Minnesota: Would start over Jim Kleinsasser (6)
Atlanta: (7)
Carolina: (8)
New Orleans: Billy Miller
Tampa Bay: Alex Smith/Jerramy Stevens
Arizona: Leonard Pope
San Francisco: Vernon Davis
Seattle: John Carlson
St. Louis: Randy McMichael

Even if you include the few teams who will start rookies/young players for experience only, you get at best 10 teams.

I'll disagree.

I would argue that he would start on all of these teams. Again I didn’t say he was the best at his position, but he is a very good player that is top 20. He just doesn’t get name recognition because he wasn’t ahigh draft pick from the last 4 years. I seriously doubt that many people on this site have watched Clark play in 3-4 games in his career. Go back and look at the last few season stats.

Buffalo: Would start over Robert Royal (1)
Miami: Would start over David Martin (2)
New York Jets: Dustin Keller (rookie)/Chris Baker
Cincinnati: Possibly start over Reggie Kelly (3)
Houston: Owen Daniels
Denver: Daniel Graham
Oakland: Zach Miller (I don’t know much about this guy)
I have him starting over all these guys for sure. Randy McMichael just gets me. I follow the Rams and know he was involved in a big trade last year, but that guy is so umipressive. I really don’t understand what anyone sees in that guy. I also took off some recent high draft picks (Lewis, Pope, Davis) that in my opinion he is better than because of his ability to make big plays, but I won’t argue with you.

Detroit: Would start over Michael Gaines (5)
Minnesota: Would start over Jim Kleinsasser (6)
Atlanta: (7)
Carolina: (8)
New Orleans: Billy Miller
Tampa Bay: Alex Smith/Jerramy Stevens
Seattle: John Carlson
St. Louis: Randy McMichael

Really..

You honestly think Desmond Clark would start over Owen Daniels? Let me pretend to be you for a minute “How many Texans games did you watch last year?”.

I don’t expect you to agree with me, that’s what makes blogs and forums fun is the debate. I would appreciate you to not bash and trash everything posted here because I didn’t like the Bears pick in the SB Nation Mock Draft.

So you only disagree on one TE.

That is fair. I watched probably 4 Texan games last season. 2 against the Colts because we see lots of Colts games here, I saw them play the Jaguars and I saw the end of a couple of Texan games. I may have seen another, but that is what I remember for sure.

I think that Owen Daniels is solid and at the same level that Clark is at, but I don’t think the guy is as clutch and that where I put a spin. I’m sure that people will disagree, but that is fine. Do you disagree with just one or all of that list. If we are only talking one or two, then I think I’ve made my point. If we are talking 5-6, I think I still made my point since there are 17 on my list and you could probably say I padded my guy a couple because I was a fan. I realize I probably think a little more of my guy as most probably do. But I don’t think I’m 20 spots off.

in miller's first list he agreed to that des clark would start on at least 8 teams

agreeing to that shows that his list sucks, logic would dictate that you would at least rank clark at 25 seeing as he wouldnt start on 24 teams, at least according to miller. 23 this miller dude is a moron stop arguing with him.

Where did this Miller moron say Des Clark would start on 8 teams?

Also, this list has to assume that all players are available. If I thought Des Clark was the 24th best TE, I would have ranked him there. Even if he can start on 8 teams today, a lot of teams have a backup whom I value higher.
