Scouting 101: NFL Defensive Tackle Rankings

Our pre-season look at every player in the NFL continues with the defensive tackle rankings. Every NFL defensive tackle has been ranked and graded.

Ed Johnson?

Started all 16 games for the Colts at DT. You also don’t list Keyunta Dawson in the end or tackle rankings.

Exclusive Rights FA

And therefore not listed by the NFL currently as on a roster. I’ll add him in. Thanks.

Mebane

Loved him at Cal… let’s see what he does on the field first.

When Mebane was starting,

The run defense dramatically improved. He is also definitely better than Craig Terril.

You are, in a way, contradicting yourself.

You put Red Bryant ahead of him and he hasn’t played a season yet. Mebane started for 13 games and played very well too. He was also a better DT than Ellis Wyms too last season.

No

Bryant’s play and potential merit a ranking higher than Mebane. As I’ve stated before, rookies are ranked on their potential to contribute and their talent. This is no different than projecting a rookie as a starter before he is drafted.

Your Rankings...

Of the 15 starting slots – over nine “positions” – overviewed thus far, my Broncos don’t yet have a single player rated higher than 7 or ranked higher than 13th. In fact, we’ve had only four players (Cutler, Marshall, Graham and Weigmann) ranked in the top 32 in their respective lists! This is a team that you have going 9-7 in 2008 and missing the playoffs by virtue of a tie-breaker alone; are we really that much better than the sum of a parts or are you subconciously underating our individuals?

Second reply

Much like my response in the DE rankings, the Broncos are not a team of superstars. Their one superstar, Champ Bailey, will be graded a 10 at CB. And again from before… how many 8+ players did the 2000 Patriots have?

Lay off of Matt, people

Seriously, these lists are incredibly deep. Give the man a little credit for doing them, don’t jump on him for ranking one second-day pick above another.

Just Curious.

I ask my questions because I’m genuinely curious and respect your opinion. I understand how difficult this task is (I’d have trouble listing reasonable top 10’s at each position) and I wouldn’t dare publish them. That said, you do publish them and, knowing that you won’t please everyone, shouldn’t mind inquires like mine all that much. I apologize if you do.

P.S.: I’d expect significant improvements for several key members of the Broncos, such as Cutler, Scheffler, Young and a couple of o-linemen. I think your 9-7 prediction was very fair and we’ll have the individual performances to match up with that record.

I don't mind at all...

Keep ‘em coming.

I think the Broncos could really improve too. Had Brandon Marshall not gotten in trouble this off-season, you’d see him ranked a lot higher. The same could be said for Cutler if he can keep his medical problem under control.

I’m a huge fan of Selvin Young and genuinely want to see him explode.

I’d say the strength of the Broncos is their LBs and CBs, you’ll like the rankings there.

I'll never understand how

Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata manage to slip under the radar. Gregg puts together ridiculous stats for a NT, Ngata is also one of the most dynamite run-stoppers in the game. Together the Ravens had the best run-defense last year, allowing a whopping 2.8 yards per carry. Yes Ray Lewis is a big part of that, but the MLB (EJ Henderson) for the second best run-defense, Minnesota, is no slouch.

Consider Kevin Williams and Pat Williams are both rated higher than either Gregg or Ngata, and the Vikings allowed 3.0 YPC compared to the Ravens 2.8. Now, the Williams brothers are awesome DTs, but so are Ngata and Gregg.

From this list, I’d be inclined to believe that the Vikings, Steelers, Browns, Jaguars, Bills, and Cardinals would have better run defenses the next year due to superior DTs, as their best DT is rated higher than Gregg and their second DT is rated higher than Ngata. I’d be shocked if that actually happened. Pass-rushing counts as well, which makes guys like Haynesworth so fricking special, but 1) Kelly Gregg is really quite good at collapsing a pocket, and 2) The most important job of the DTs is to stuff the run. And no-one did that better last year than the Baltimore Ravens.

As an aside, I think guys with work-ethic problems were rated a bit too highly. Yes Shaun Rogers and Kris Jenkins have talent, but their old teams were tired of them taking plays off and they now have to adjust to new roles on their new teams.

And an another aside, I know I’m coming down pretty hard on this particular list, but I love these lists and they just wouldn’t be nearly as fun if I didn’t get to criticize them.

Run Defense

Isn’t just defensive tackles. A good run defense can often mean horrible pass defense (Vikings). You have to take in to account the entire defense, not just one position, when looking at overall statistics.

www.newerascouting.com www.mockingthedraft.com

by MattMiller on Jul 24, 2008 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats why I use YPC as opposed to total yards allowed

to help eliminate some of the effects of having a horrible pass defense.

You may have to take into account the entire defense when looking at the overall statistics, but it’s not easy to get really impressive overall statistics without really impressive players.

Kelly Gregg is the lynchpin for the Baltimore defense. He’s an elite run-stuffer, effective against the pass, and runs to the ball with more effort and hustle than almost any other DT in the league. I’ve never seen any other DT try to run down a WR on a WR-screen play, and while Gregg usually can’t make the tackle (what an embarrassing thing for the WR if he could!), he usually slows down the WR enough to save a few yards for the defense.

If you don’t use things like YPC, what can you use to evaluate a DT? Tackles? Gregg led the NFL last season with 80 tackles (56 total). Haloti Ngata comes in 3rd with 63 tackles (43 solo). Second place in tackles, Patterson of the Eagles doesn’t fare well on your list either. So I guess that’s out.

As for Haloti Ngata, his addition to the Ravens saved Ray Lewis, and sparked Bart Scott’s career season in 2006 (along with Trevor Pryce). In 2006, all four Ravens linebackers went to the pro-bowl (or were invited) and none of the defensive lineman did. All four of those linebackers started for the Ravens in 2005, under the same defensive coordinator, and none of them made the pro-bowl. The difference? Ngata and Pryce.

So if these aren’t criterion for picking the best DT in the league, then what is? What makes Shaun Rogers, Kris Jenkins, Amobi Okoye, Darnell Docket, Pat Williams, Marcus Stroud etc better than Gregg?

by math_geek on Jul 24, 2008 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pass rushing

Period

Combine their ability to rush the passer with their run stuffing ability, and there you go. No one considers Kelly Gregg the best DT in the league. Kelly Gregg doesn’t even consider himself the #1 DT in the league.

www.newerascouting.com www.mockingthedraft.com

by MattMiller on Jul 24, 2008 5:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't call Gregg the best DT in the league

I’m pretty sure Haynesworth gets that nod right now, maybe Casey Hampton. I’d also left out guys like Tommie Harris and Kevin Williams who are just better. But Pat Williams is often taken out in passing situations (Gregg is not even if he’s the only D-lineman on the field).

Kelly Gregg could also have 20 sacks and not consider himself the best DT in the league. The man makes millions of dollars and drives a used pickup truck. Ghandi may not have called himself the best Indian civil rights leader, doesn’t mean he wasn’t.

Pass rushing does, however, explain guys like Docket and Okoye.

I do believe Gregg is the second best 3-4 nose tackle in the league (behind Hampton, except when I’m in an anti-Steeler mood, then Gregg is better). I realize a lot of people think Wilfork is also better. I think Wilfork gets a lot of benefit playing in between Richard Seymour and Ty Warren.

That makes it difficult to understand how other nose-tackles, like Hampton or Vince Wilfork get rated so highly. They are hardly effective pass rushers. Shaun Rogers had 7 sacks last year, he won’t get 3 this year, even if he performs his job really well. When you line up straight across from the center, a sack is a hard thing to get. Four players in your top ten will be NTs next year and not pick up many sacks. Pat Williams is an excellent run-stuffer that doesn’t rush the passer and will not pick up many sacks. So five guys (Hampton, Jenkins, Rogers, Wilfork, and Pat Williams) are not going to be effective pass-rushers next year and are all rated in the top ten. We’ll have to agree to disagree, but I would order the nose-tackles as Hampton – Gregg – Wilfork – some other guys – Rogers – some more guys – Jenkins), and the way that those NTs are seeded among your top DTs, that would certainly put Gregg in the top ten.

Stats

Will never tell the entire story, though. There’s a reason most scouts don’t even look at stat sheets. I’m basing these rankings solely on play, potential, age and talent.

www.newerascouting.com www.mockingthedraft.com

by MattMiller on Jul 24, 2008 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, I can surely understand that stats don't tell the whole story

Especially for the DT position, where stats are few and far between. But at some point, a team with better players should play better defense, and I look at a Ravens team whose defensive line played very well (yes, there was not much of a pass rush, but in a 3-4 that is more the linebackers fault than the line), even though the defense as a whole did not play very well (horrible corner play, Jarret Johnson is a great utility guy but not a starter), and their players on that line are not rated very highly.

It’s hard to apply Moneyball to football, because the statistics are so much worse, but the same principle of relying on your eyes being dangerous can hold. Eyes can deceive, and so statistics can help lend precision to your eyes. Now, I may be guilty of loving statistics too much (I am the math_geek after all), but it’s hard to get out of them.

Kelly Gregg strikes me as that kind of Moneyball player. He doesn’t look like an NFL DT because he’s so short. He’s smaller than a lot of the linemen he stacks up against. But, he’s extremely strong and has technique that helps him make up for being smaller. And he always seems to play very well, and Ray Lewis rarely gets blocked, and pockets seem to collapse fairly quickly. And it’s a huge mistake not to double-block him on running plays. I know I’m not the only one jumping up and down singing Gregg’s praises (Peter King once called him the most underrated player in football), but I think it’s amazing that after all the Ravens defense has done, and how dependent it has been on Kelly for the past five years, that he still doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

Right, now I remember the line

I just was failing with the connection because I couldn’t see the prototypical DT modeling clothing.

I think there’s some truth to it in football. How many very good football players have gone undrafted partly because they didn’t have the proper physique for their position. You could make the same argument about your Gary Brackett.

by math_geek on Jul 25, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Some Colts fans with a podcast

described a play where Brackett picked off a pass and returned it about 20 yards as “Brackett flys like a rolly-polly bat out of hell.”

Bethea was a good example the big knock on him was that he was a 6 foot, ~185lb safety. He won the starting job as a rookie and bulked up to over 200 in his first offseason.

Robert Mathis and hopefully Marcus Howard too.

The reigning DPOY was supposedly too short.
