Scouting 101: Center Rankings

Our pre-season look at every player in the NFL continues with the center rankings. Every NFL center has been ranked and graded. This will wrap up all offensive rankings. Defensive players will soon follow, as will team-by-team scouting.

* Please note that the grades given are our own. Each player is ranked in order of who we would want as our starting center for the 2008 NFL Season only. We have taken in to account age, production and potential in grading the players below. Only drafted rookies are listed. **

Jason Brown

an understandable mistake, as Brown played LG last year, but he’s our starting center this year, and that’s what he played in college. He is quite a good lineman, Dr. Z referred to him as a human bowling ball, and certainly the best lineman on the Ravens and an upgrade over Mike Flynn. I’d guess he’d rate a 7 on your list, probably right around Kevin Mawae.

You could also count Chris Chester, who was our backup C last year, but he seems like he’s going to be our interior backup and could count as a guard or C this year.

We ought to have somebody at C next year though as I don’t think we are desperate enough to try the kicking and punting only offense.

Ravens

Their center position has been confusing. I followed Brown closely at UNC and loved him, same with Chester at OU. I think both can handle the job, but every report I’ve received (no joking) has been different.

Brown was listed at OG with a notation that he will most likely play center.

I think Kruetz is falling.

Be watching him this year. He missed the probowl last season and just didn’t look nearly as good as he has played for his career. He could bounce back and the best do, but last season he looked poor. Lots of people are also starting to blame him for most of the QB fumbles because all the QB’s fumble his snaps. When everyone has a problem fumbling your snaps, you have to start asking, “Is it me?” Also, there were so many guys that came right up the gut and drilled our QB’s last season. This could have partly been Rueben Brown at LG, who is now gone, but could have been partly Olin.

Also Jeff Saturday was voted by coaches as one of the smartest players in the NFL in an informal coaches poll done by ESPN. Randy Moss and Hines Ward were also on that very short list. I’m not sure how good his blocking is, but when only 4-5 names are mentioned covering all positions, that is pretty special. Olin was voted as one of the dirtiest players by the way.

Kick it to me... I'm open!

Saturday

is top 5 if not top 3. He’s one of the most underrated players in the game and should be ahead of Kreutz, Birk, and Mangold.

Nalen

No Tom Nalen? I appreciate he’d knocking on a bit but he’s gotta at least be listed!

I think so

Tommy seems all set to go for another year, Casey Wig is a contingency plan.

Lyle Sendlein

Are you considering Sendlein a guard or does he just not make the list? He started two games as rookie and the Cardinals ground game was much better in those two games. The coaches rave about him and he seems poised to take over for Al Johnson sometime in next couple of years.

Guard

I really like him too.
