49ers QB Alex Smith on IR
Former #1 Overall pick Alex Smith will miss the entire 2008 season with a shoulder injury. The good news? He as a back up.

Less than two days after quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ career with the Packers unofficially began, quarterback Alex Smith’s career with the 49ers is unofficially over.
The team has announced that Smith has been placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury suffered in practice on Friday.
Recently, G.M. Scot McGloughan acknowledged that, if Smith isn’t the starter in 2009, the team won’t be able to justify keeping Smith and his $9.625 million base salary.
The Niners were considering both Smith and Rodgers in April 2005. When they chose Smith with the first overall pick, Rodgers commenced a 23-spot free fall, landing in Green Bay with the 24th overall selection.
Meanwhile, the Niners might be feeling some regrets about passing on Rodgers, who looked like an established veteran against the Vikings.
And the list of other teams that might be having second thoughts about not drafting Rodgers likely includes the Vikings, who had not one but two cracks at Rodgers. Instead, they took Troy Williamson at No. 7 and Erasmus James at No. 18.
Question: Where are they now?
Answer: Don’t waste your time looking for them on the Minnesota roster.

Gotta be a sad day for Niners' fan, huh Matt?

*Tears*
I have two words that are getting me through this season: Matthew. Stafford.
I’m hoping for the first pick and Stafford in a Niners uniform next season. Or Brady Quinn. I’d take that trade, too.

were you happy when the Niners drafted Alex Smith?
or were you more like Mel Kiper after the Ravens drafted Kyle Boller, when he sold his season tickets as a protest and hasn’t attended a Ravens game since (although he seemed pretty happy about the Joe Flacco signing).

Yea
I cried, threatened to find a new team and then tried to be optimistic. I was a big fan of Aaron Rodgers.

A little
But eventually a Florida WR will do well in the NFL, a Clemson player will live up to expectations and a Texas player will be tough, instead of soft.
At least I’m hoping so.

Derric Dockery and Casey Hampton aren't tough enough for you?
or were you referring to offensive skill position players. In that case, maybe Young will work out. Of course I mean Selvin.

As for Clemson players
Trevor Pryce and Brian Dawkins worked out OK…
As for Florida WRs working out in the NFL, that’s just crazy talk. Maybe you can count Jabar Gafney. Or maybe him getting playing time is the reason Brady got injured.

Smith
I don’t know what the Niners saw in him. I remember thinking at the time that he wasn’t a #1 overall pick kind of player. They should have traded down with San Diego and either got Brees or Rivers from them or drafted Rodgers with SD’s initial first rounder that year(the one the Chargers used on Merriman).
