Saturday NFL Draft watch notes
• A possible matchup tonight between Brandon LaFell of LSU and Joe Haden of Florida is the most intriguing one of the day. Haden can get out of position, something a heady receiver like LaFell can take advantage of. Haden is really good against the run, so he'll test LaFell's blocking ability. LaFell dominated this matchup last season.
This will also be a good game to see what offensive tackle Ciron Black (LSU) and Carlos Dunlap (Florida) are worth. Both have been having ordinary seasons, especially Dunlap. Black is a strong blocker so Dunlap will have to use his initial quickness more today.
In general, LSU's top prospects have been average this season. Running back Charles Scott finally broke a big run last week, but he's slow to the hole. End Rahim Alem has been able to get after the passer and defensive tackle Al Woods has been non-existant. Each could turn their draft fortunes around today.
• Another week and another chance for Mississippi's Jevan Snead to try and prove he's an elite talent. His struggles this year have been plenty noted, but things won't get any easier against Alabama tonight. Snead needs to rely less on his arm strength and use his brain more. Alabama will bring a lot of pressure and Snead's resolve will be tested.
Also in this game, watch for Rebels defensive end Greg Hardy to have a big game. Alabama's offensive tackles are just average so Hardy could have a big game.
• The Ohio State front four is impressive and filled with NFL-caliber players. Chief among them are ends Cameron Heyward and Thaddeus Gibson. Against the pass, particularly Gibson, they are terrors. Today against Wisconsin, they can show how good they are against the run. Sophomore John Clay is a bulldozer of a back who is hard to take down.
• Oklahoma State left tackle Russell Okung can display his dominance today when the Cowboys play Texas A&M. Von Miller has become one of the nation's top sack artists and he'll test Okung's quickness and ability to move his feet.
• Last week Iowa offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga showed few sigs of rust. However, that was against Arkansas State. Today against Michigan the junior might face all-conference end Brandon Graham. The senior can get low around the edge, which could give Bulaga problems.
• Against the duo rushing attack of Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray of Oklahoma, Baylor inside linebacker Joe Pawelek will have his hands full today. This could be a showcase game for the senior sleeper. He has some athletic deficiencies but makes a lot of plays.
• This won't be a game where he can show his ability against the pass, but Florida State's Patrick Robinson is a player to watch today against Georgia Tech. He's considered a one-dimensional player but will get to show what he can do against the run. Robinson has looked good this season against the pass.
• Georgia defensive tackles Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins have been a big disappointment this season. Conversely, Tennessee's Montario Hardesty has been one of the biggest surprises this season. It could be a good matchup to watch this week.

I wouldnt say that LaFell dominated Haden last year, but he did outplay him
I think Von Miller could be an ideal 3-4 OLB
I predict Snead to get eaten alive by Bama’s D

As a reshirt sophmore...
Ryan Mallett can declare can’t he?
He’s still a bit raw and its his first year, but this dude looks like a #1 pick candidate whenever he declares.

Yeah, he can come out after this season. I don’t really expect him to, though.

Not if he and Clausen are in the same class.

Wow. If you dont think Clausen is a great prospect then you are just blinded by your hate for ND.
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 10, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
LOL!
are you serious? Where have I ever said that Clausen is not a great prospect?
Just cuz I think that Mallet might be a better prospect and the #1 means I don’t think Clausen is great all of a sudden?
What the f$%k is the internet?

Well,
you were calling me a homer for thinking Clausen would go before Mallet, so dont act like you are innocent. Many people think Clausen is better than Mallet, does that make them all Homers?
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 10, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
no....
I ain’t talking to everyone, I’m talking to you.
You’re the one who is the ND fan. I don’t hate ND, nor do I think Clausen has no shot at all of going #1.
But don’t be surprised if Mallet is chosen #1 regardless of if Clausen is in the draft.
And what am I “acting like I’m innocent” from? In no way and I an Arkansas fan, or even a Michigan fan (cuz that’s where Mallet’s career started).
I don’t even have a college team I root for……
The only reason Clausen is talked about as better cuz his team is (forced) on every Saturday cuz he plays at ND. He is also in his third full year as a starter.
From what I see in Mallet is what I saw in Clausen in his sophmore year.
Mallet is much bigger, and while both have strong arms, Mallet has a Flacco like gun.

You called me a homer for saying I think Clausen would go over Mallet.
By that logic that would make you an Arkansas homer.
Thats all I was saying

Watching Bama-Ole Miss
How the hell was Jevan Snead considered an elite talent?
Also, UF-LSU is for who is second best in the SEC. Bama is playing lights out right now
by FSBlueApocalypse on Oct 10, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
maybe on that last part....
Bama still has to beat UF in order to be considered better. This isn;t the Big 12 where by pulling a magic bean out of a hat the #1 team in the division is determined.
Snead doesn’t have much of a team right now. I know he lost Michael Oher and his O-line is porous, which isn’t good especially against a team like Bama.
He’s definitely not a top 15 pick anymore. He reminds me of Brian Brohm in that he was an elite talent at some point, but for whatever reason he just lost it at some point.
What the f$%k is the internet?
by FreeBradshaw on Oct 10, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Snead still has better talent than Brohm did. Dexter McCluster is a good receiver.
A big reason Brohm had a bad senior year is because Kragthorpe (the worst coach ever) became the coach that year
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 10, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Mcluster is a good return guy and a nice wildcat option...
but as a WR, he couldn’t shine Harry Douglas’ shoes when he was at UL. Mario Urruita (or however you spell it) was a gigantic target too as a WR who was damn good for Brohm.
Sneed really doesn’t have much on that roster. McCluster is the only real threat, and he’s tiny and can’t get open.

Mcluster
Is a gimick receiver. He can pad your stats by taking a screen pass 50 yards, but he isn’t catching a seam route and getting busted and holding on to the ball.

yup.
I don’t know who Snead had there as his WR last year, but there has to be someone missing there cuz there’s a reason this guy isn’t playing well right now. He has no one to throw to.

McCluster is a good receiver is that for college or as a NFL prospect?

College. I dont see his skills being effective in the NFL.

Maybe
A Josh Cribbs type… though I think Cribbs is miles ahead of Mcluster athletic wise.

Cribbs was a QB in college. I think they are a lot different.
And plus Cribbs is 6’1 and McCluster is 5’8

Over the last, I think, six games last season Snead was incredible. He’s considered such a good prospect because he has a great arm and good throwing motion.
I definitely need to see more Alabama action.

Yeah, Snead’s motion and natural arm strength are easily the best of the draft eligible QBs (other than Mallet who is pretty unlikely to declare). This is a year of average arm strength and Snead stands out from the pack because of it.

And off and on
Athleticism. He can run okay, but I wouldn’t want the Jags to take him. I like Dan Lefeavour or Christian Ponder in a few years. Josh Nesbitt is my deep sleeper for the 2011 draft.

Has DeMarcus Granger been good this year? I know that McCoy gets more attention, but I thought Granger is supposed to be good too.

Catch any of the Iowa game?
I didn’t watch Bulaga vs Graham much, but god I love Adrian Clayborn and Broderick Binns.

Joe Haden and Brandon Spikes had a good game
LaFell wasn’t that great, but i’d contribute that to his lame duck QB.
Haden: INT, and a couple tackles
Spikes: 2.5 sacks and some tackles
Dunlap i didn’t see much, but he did alright in tandem with the line in getting pressure on LSU’s quarterback.

Hardesty
How does his performance against Georgia help his draft status? Is he a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick?
by BlueVol03 on Oct 11, 2009 2:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
As a Vols fan...
I was wondering the same thing. I personally would like to see him go high, however i am leaning towards the 3rd round at this point. I think that his previous years being plagued with injury and not much production may hurt his value still.
