Saturday NFL Draft watch notes
• Clearly the top matchup of the day is one between Oklahoma and Texas. Quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy will be the main attraction, but watch Sooners left tackle Trent Williams. He's had some struggles moving from the right side this season and will be tested by Texas' Sergio Kindle.
Oklahoma cornerback Dominique Franks is one of the top junior cornerbacks in the nation. He gets overshadowed some by fellow junior Joe Haden. Today he could go head-to-head with Texas senior Jordan Shipley.
• Today could be the day Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen really gets the attention of NFL evaluators. Against USC last season Clausen struggled in the face of pressure. If he plays poised, shows good pocket presence and has completes a high percentage of passes, there's no reason to think Clausen shouldn't challenge Bradford or Jake Locker as the top quarterback among scouts.
If USC's Everson Griffen matches up against Notre Dame's Sam Young, the matchup will be a good one. Young is fairly underrated and has really good size and strength. Griffen is a good all-around pass rusher who has a chance to show what he can do against an NFL-sized left tackle.
• No one is talking about it, but one of best one-on-one contest to watch today is in in the Kentucky/Auburn game. Wildcats middle linebacker Micah Johnson is strong against the run. For the Tigers, running back Ben Tate is one of the most underrated running backs in the nation. Both are third or fourth round talents.
• Going against Georgia's A.J. Green, arguably the best receiver in the country, Vanderbilt cornerback Myron Lewis can boost his stock today. Lewis is a good all-around cornerback, but he doesn't have true No. 1 shutdown skills. He can prove otherwise today.
• Florida has one of the best defensive lines in the country. So today could be a long day for Arkansas senior guard Mitch Petrus. He's one of the better guards in the nation, but gets by mostly on heart and effort. The Gators will be his biggest test of the season.
• Minnesota wide reciever Eric Decker is having a fantastic year. In six games, he has 46 receptions for 689 yards. Penn State sophomore D'Anton Lynn is turning into a shutdown cornerback. Lynn is 6-foot-1, so Decker could be challenged big time today.
• Quarterbacks will be the name of the game in the Central Michigan/Western Michigan contest. Some like Central's Dan LeFevour, who is athletic and mobile. Others prefer Western's Tim Hiller, who is a pure pocket passer. Both have been inconsistent this season and look like third rounders, at best.
• Prediction: Today is the day Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead begins to turn his season around. The Rebels play a listless UAB team and Snead could get back on the first-round radar.

Sam Bradford hurt
Same shoulder just got banged up. Doesn’t look good.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
This has to hurt his draft status doesn't it?
Hard to see him being picked in the top 3 when he can’t stay on the field…

Yeah, not good for Bradford. Or Williams, who i have been really unimpressed with this year.
Actually, this is a pretty terrible game all around. Of all the best prospects, Adam Ulatoski, the Texas LT, has looked the best.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
Amazingly
There’s still a minute left in the first half in this game and the Iowa-Wisconsin game, a game that started at the same time, only has 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. This is probably the wildest 6-3 game I’ve ever seen.
Colt McCoy looks bad. Granted, he’s been under pressure all day but his footwork is poor, and he’s making a lot of bad decisions from what I can see.

Bradford and McCoy would have been high picks last year.
I liked the fact that they ignored the cash to remain loyal to their schools.
Hope their injuries/poor play in 2009 doesn’t hurt them too much in the next draft.
I don't really get the whole "loyalty" thing
You really think they stayed to help their schools, or just because it was the best decision for themselves? I don’t see why someone would have so much loyalty to a school that they wouldn’t do what’s in their own best interests.

And Williams just got burned and allowed a sack
Not very impressive…

He has been mostly terrible this year. It’s official. Makes me glad I’m re-doing the player rankings.

I don't think Bulaga is coming out
hasn’t looked like himself so far this year and just got worked on back to back plays.

still looking awful
though he’s far from alone there on Iowa right now

I haven't watched any of that game
Who has been lining up against Bulaga? Has it been O’Brian Schofield?
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
name sounds familar, but that might have been the guy that was eating up Calloway on the other side
Iowa looked better across the board in the second half, but that 1st half was terrible. The OL and run D in particular.

He still will be a top 10 pick if he comes out.

Oklama is absolutely dominating Texas so far in the first half
Texas has run 19 plays for 19 total yards!!
by Brendan Scolari on Oct 17, 2009 1:22 PM EDT reply actions
Not sure why Oklahoma keeps running the ball
They’re averaging 0.6 yards per running play on 12 attempts and 7.7 yards per play on 27 passing attempts….

Terrele Pryor should be switched to WR.
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 17, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions
Anything other than quarterback would be an upgrade for Ohio State. Pryor should have committed to Michigan.

Never saw him in high school
Bu I’ve never seen what made him the top prospect in the country. Obviously he’s great at running the ball, but he’s just not a very good passer.

He's a sophmore.

Has he played RT all year? Could have sworn I saw him at LT earlier this year.

He's been the RT the whole year
I’m almost positive.

Not really
Arkansas has been extremely lucky to recover all 4 fumbles in the game. There offense didn’t really do anything apart from that 1 long pass. The only TD was on a really short field after they recovered Tebow’s fumble.

Mallet is 5/13 for 68 yards
Midway through the 3rd quarter. If that’s beasting Jamarcus Russell is a beast too. ;-)

and luck is on both sides...
cuz Florida is also lucky to be in the game.
Give or take PI call on the tying TD, long penalty on the next play too. Also missed FG’s for Arkansas.
He has played better than any other QB against Florida all year.

What a fun thriller of a game
I think anybody whose a senior on the Gators D has their stock a little higher especially Haden. Tebow did pretty ok, even though his O-Line let him get sacked alot. Mallet still has some things to learn but he’s learning. I think Arkansas’s RB was their best player.

Is it just me?
Or could Carlos Dunlap be in for a fall? He hasn’t looked all that impressive this year and he is kind of reminding of Calais Campbell. I read a story on a website that stated the same. Also I read that Scott Wright mentioned that Spikes could fall like Poluszny, Laurinitis, Mauluga, EJ Henderson, and Demeco Ryans. I’m not too familiar with Scott Wright. But it does make one think.
Draft guru in training.
There is a notion that inside linebackers, for whatever reason, drop in the draft. The evidence backs it up for now, but Spikes is a better college player than all those guys.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
Could happen...
but I do think Spikes is more of the reason Florida’s D is so good, vs teams like USC, Penn State and OSU that had a TON of great Front 7 players aside from those MLB’s.
Not to say Florida’s D is all Spikes an they have no one else, but I don’t think that aside from Joe Haden there really is a Florida player worthy of a 1st rounder (Al Davis may think other wise of Carlos Dunlap tho…)
Speaking of Dunlap..yea, he looks fat and useless..like Calais Camplell a few years back. Conversely, that other great D-Lineman in Dunlap’s HS class, Everson Griffen, looks just as big as Dunlap and looks like he’s setting up shop in the backfield before the snap.
Aside from being a bonehead on more than a few occasions (which probably will hurt his stock as much as Dunlap’s being overrated…), Everson Griffen is much better than Dunlap.

Dunlap shouldnt be a top 10 pick.
Current Phinsider Feud Points: 23
There are times in my life wheere I have self-doubt, but when this happens, I simply ask myself: What would Don Draper do? So I bone a random whore.
maybe not top 15

From movethesticks.com;
“Jimmy Clausen is one of the most talented QB’s in the country. He has several key components scouts look for at the position. He has a high/quick release, excellent velocity and the ability to accurately place the ball down the field.”
Im glad someone agrees that he has a good arm.
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 17, 2009 10:59 PM EDT reply actions
Clausen showed a lot
against USC’s D, which could be as good as a few NFL defenses.
I still say it, but if Weiss gets canned, which could happen with another loss or 2, Clausen goes pro.
If Weiss stays, Clausen stays for one more go.
Either way, to me RIGHT NOW he’s the best QB in the draft. Any team would be quite stupid to pass on him.
Not to say next year a guy like Mallet over takes him, but that’s next year.

His "draftability" is rising thanks to Mccoy, Snead looking Ehhh and Bradford
tweaking himself in new ways.
