You pick: Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy?
Both Gerald McCoy (Oklahoma) and Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska) have been terrors this season. They're fairly similar players at defensive tackle. They both have good size and strength and are quick off the snap. They could both play end in a 3-4 or tackle in a 4-3.
Suh, a senior, might be more aggressive than McCoy, a junior. But McCoy may be even better at shooting the gap.
Former Browns and Ravens scout Daniel Jeremiah, now of MoveTheSticks.com, tweeted today that McCoy and Suh could be the first two picks in the 2010 NFL Draft.
He might be right. The Mocking the Draft rankings are being redone right now and Suh and McCoy will be the top two players. Who will be tops hasn't been decided.
I want you to weigh in with your choice. Especially like one more than the other? Make your case in the comments.

I don't know
Suh is 6’4’’ 300lbs. I don’t think that translates to end in a 3-4. He sure seems like a Haynesworth-type who can eat up a few blockers in a 3-4 or even a 4-3. It all depends on who is drafting where and what type of D they are installing.

how big do you think ends are in a 3-4?

I guess I was a bit off in my reply
My bigger concern is his speed off the end. I’ve only watched him in High School and in a few games at Nebraska, but I think he is better suited to adding some lbs and playing on the inside.

Suh for me
Honestly I see this as a Manning or Leaf type debate. Both are tremendous talents and I would be happy with either one. I could be very easily talked into McCoy and then easily talked back into Suh. They are both very good and too close to call.

Suh might be the perfect Nose Guard for a 3-4 system.

Too small isn't he?
i think he’d be better as a DE in a 34. He could be a Jay Ratliff type penetrating NT though…

could be...
depends on the 3-4 system he’d in.
Like Brendan said, Ratliff is one of the rare undersized NT’s, but he’s also one of the best in teh game.
Now, that doesn’t mean that Ratliff would be better as an end or a 4-3 DT…he probably could.
It depends on the team, what they have, and what type of 3-4 they run.
Bottom line…Suh is a beast.

Suh!
Suh is superior in terms of versatility, IMO. Also, Suh seems to consistently play big in big games.

I picked Suh.
Mainly because of his eye popping stats. I mean the guy is knocking down almost two passes a game in addition to a load of TFLs, sacks and turnovers.
Since they both play in the same conference the argument over how meaningful the stats are is pretty much moot. I don’t watch enough college football to know for sure, but it sounds like Suh always faces a double team, McCoy , not as often..
The bottom line is that both of these guys will be excellent pros at DT in a 4-3. I think it would be crazy to move them outside in a 3-4, although I think Suh would handle that transition better. It would be like moving Kevin Williams of Minnesota to a DE. Makes no sense.
by NorthLeft12 on Oct 18, 2009 7:44 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
...Kevin Williams would probably be an excellent 3-4 DE.
6"5, 315…fast, quick, smart, strong…no, K-Williams is good no matter where he goes.
Suh seems to be that sort of animal.
McCoy is good and actually given his speed and quickness, maybe a bit better suited as a 3-4 end or as a 4-3 DT, one who gets after the QB more.
Either way…Suh is better. OU has a ton of horses on their D-Line. McCoy still stands out, but its really not like he’s the only one there..he might not even be the only first round pick on his line.

Don't always look at stats
They don’t always tell the whole story. I remember when Shawn Springs was at Ohio St. he had one interception all year because no one threw to his side. Like “eye popping stats”? Build your team on Texas Tech QB’s. All I’m saying is don’t always look at stats.

Are you suggesting that in Suh's case his stats are inflated some how?
Not sure how a DT can inflate his stats. Its not like he is not double teamed or they purposely run at him. It is totally different for a QB, RB, WR, on offence or a CB on defence. As you describe, a CB can be avoided pretty easily, but a DT?
In this case both of these two guys play against the same teams. Suh also plays for a lower talent team.
College production is a good indicator of future success. A lot of draftniks want to ignore the stats completely and talk about 40 times, reps, and long jumps. That is just nonsense to me. Football is a lot more than weight, height, and measureables. Suh has it all, although McCoy has everything as well. Just not as good as Suh.

For the record I picked Suh.
No i’m not suggesting that at all. You mentioned “eye popping stats” to which I said Texas Tech QBs.

I picked Suh
though I have to admit that I have only seen little of both of these guys. In all retrospect both are studs and should have promissing pro careers. I think I picked him with my NFL team in mind. As a titans fan I can see Suh filling the gapping hole left by Hanesworth. Locking up to O-lineman and letting the ends crash the party, while also being tremondous in run stopping.

I really like Suh,
…but I would be reluctant to take either one of them in the top 10. DTs just have way too high a bust rate when they go into the pros. Suh is probably the best DT prospect to come around in a long time, but I would still be very cautious.

Every position has busts
I know it’s all opinion but to stay away from a certain position due to a risk of that position being a bust you would run out of positions to draft for.

Agree tjh. There is no bust proof position.
Last ten years:
QB – D. Carr, J. Harrington, A. Smith
RB – C. Perry, W. Green, R. Dayne
WR – M. Williams, C. Rogers, T. Williamson, R. Williams
OL – G. Foster, M. Williams, S. McDougle
TE – J. Stevens, A. Becht
DL – E. James, J. Sullivan, R. Sims, G. Warren
LB – L. Arrington, C. Claiborne, D. Pollack
CB – P. Jones, A. Carroll, W. Middlebrooks, T. Fair
S – M. Huff, R. Anderson, Not a lot of these guys were picked in the first round.
I could get some more examples if I go back farther.

I don’t think I’d consider guys like Arrington or Pollack busts. Arrington was having a great career before injuries stopped him. And Pollack really never got a chance because of a freak injury.

I guess I should say that they were picks that never lived up to their potential.
Charles Rogers and his multiple collar bone injuries then his infatuation with marijuana. A lot of these guys probably have similar excuses.
Arrington was a bit of a tough call, but really he did not live up to his #2 selection. There were a shortage of LBs to pick from early in the first round. Ditto for TEs.

I do see what invisibulman is saying, though, because it does seem like most good D lineman come from the late rounds or were undrafted
