How to fix the Cleveland Browns
1. First of all, Mangini is the answer. When we get a new coach, I would rather not get another Belichick disciple. I would like either Gruden, Leslie Frazier, or KYLE Shanahan.
2. We either need to develop Quinn or Ratliff better, or sign or trade for a decent QB or a stopgap.
3. I hate to say this, but we need to trade Shaun Rogers. He is getting older and we wont contend before he retires(more than likely). I think that a team desperate for a NT could give us a late first or early second for him.
4. We need to draft well, (not like in the past) and here is how to do it.
First Round: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
The Browns need help in the secondary, and they also need a playmaker. Eric Berry can be both, and become the face of the Defense.
First/Second(from Rogers) CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
Jamal Lews will be gone after this year, and Jerome Harrison is okay, but we defineatly need help at running back. CJ is very explosive and can really help our weak offense.
Second Round Trevard Lindley, CB Kentucky
The Browns have two good nickel backs, but need a starter opposite Eric Wright. Lindley is good in man coverage, and when you have CBs that are good in man coverage, it allows you to blitz more.
Third Round Phil Taylor, NT, Baylor
He and Ahtyba Rubin replace Shaun Rogers.
Third Round Zane Beadles, OT, Utah
Joe Thomas is a beast, but John St. Clair is awful. Beadles could come in and start and make this line very good.
Fourth Round Brandon Deaderick, DE, Alabama
Kenyon Coleman and Robaire Smith are both serviceable but are getting older. Deaderick plays in a 34 at Bama so he wont have as much trouble transitioning and he is a good run stopper.
Fifth Round(from Tampa Bay) Walter Thurmond, CB, Oregon
I know I already gave the Browns a CB, and Thurmond is injury prone, but there can be big reward from this pick without much risk(because it is just the fifth round)
Fifth Round Justin Cole, OLB, San Jose State
Kam Wimbley has emerged as a good pass rusher, but we still need someone to start on the other side. Alex Hall has a ton of potential, but he never gets much playing time. Cole is an Athletic, disciplined and a reliable open-field tackler that is just scratching the surface of his potential.
Fifth Round( from New York Jets) John Skelton, QB, Fordham
He is a huge developmental quarterback.
Sixth Round Darryll Clark, ATH, Penn State
Another Developmental QB. He will likely spend a year on the practice squad and decide what position he will play.
Sixth Round (from Panthers) Chris Carter, WR, UC Davis
Slot receiver that is putting up unreal numbers. Also plays on special teams.
Seventh Round James Aldridge, RB/FB, Notre Dame
When Lewis is gone, the Browns will need a short-yardage back. Aldridge has played both RB and FB at Notre Dame.
Thats 2 Quarterbacks, 2 runningbacks, 1 wide receiver, 1 offensive lineman, 2 defensive lineman, 1 linebacker, and 3 defensive backs.

I forgot to add Jim Harbaugh in that list of coaches I wanted

Improvement would come from this draft
Without a doubt. Any team that is able to get Lindley in the second gets outstanding value. I’m a huge fan of Daryl Clark like you have him listed, athlete. Gadget quarterback/slash player, every team needs one, Clark provides that.

getting spiller would be awesome, but drafting a qb from fordham? that’s one of the major positions we need to fill.

He and Clark are projects at QB. I said in the top that we need to either develop Quinn or Ratliff better or aquire a stop-gap

I don’t understand your two picks at RB. Sure, they’re good players, but we have Harrison and Davis to develop. Picks on RBs would be a waste.
I like the Berry pick but we don’t need that high of a pick on a CB. I like Francies and want to see him develop opposite Wright. I don’t think we need a high pick CB.
We’ll get higher than a 2nd off Rogers but even then I’d still personally want to keep him.
We need a DE once we cut Williams and his ubsured salary. Our other DEs are average at best. So acceptable choice.
Clark won’t drop to the Sixth, I don’t think at least. And yes a fifth can be spent on Skelton, but it’s just an odd pick in the first place. I’d like to go higher on our QB pick but not 1st round.
Vickers is a perfectly capable FB. And I already stated why we don’t need another RB.
We need a RG so much more than a RT. RT usually isn’t a problematic position with a right – handed QB because it’s not their blindside. Yes, St. Clair sucks. But RG first, RT second.
We have so many WRs, I don’t know what to do with them all.
In the most honest of ways tRSS, this is a weak mockup . Sorry.

Harrison is pretty good, but Spiller would be an upgrade. And I also think that Lewis is done, so we will need a short-yardage back. Anyway, why complain a whole lot about a 7th rounder.
We dont have a good starter opposite Wright. That is pretty obvious. I do like Francies but he isnt getting any playing time and I dont think he will be much more than a nickel back.
It sounds like you hate admitting Deaderick is a good pick.
St. Clair sucks. We need a RT because pass rushers are killing our right side. Fraley hasnt done that bad at RG and Hadnot isnt that bad either.
At WR we have Robiskie and Massoquoi who I both like. Stuckey has looked bad. Furrey is nothing special and is old. Cribbs has struggled too. Donte Stallworth struggled in 08 and will be rusty after he comes back. Considering all of this, I see no reason at all to complain about using a 6th rounder on a wide receiver.
If it is so bad, I would like to see how you would draft.

I thought we dropped Stallworth. But not a big deal. My position draft would probably go as follows.
S, QB, DE, TE, RG, OLB, RT, CB, WR (As you said, low pick, possible high reward), DE, S
I’d like to think that would fill us out nicely. I didn’t think yours was terrible. Just out of place picks and too many duplicate picks.

You cant just say " I want a safety in round 1, a QB in round 2, a DE in round 3…" and come away with a good draft.

Well. I wasn’t bothering with players. I was just stating what positions I want filled at what point in the draft. I was just proving that your position picks were absurd and out of place. Actual players aside, I think my position draft makes sense no?

I really like Shaun Rogers and would take him back in Detroit..........but
there is no way I give you a second for him. Late third or an early fourth at the most. He may have two years left. He is 30 and a half years old with nine years in the NFL.
I assume that you have Cleveland picking in the top five or six? Any later than that and Berry is not likely to be there.
By the way, who did you get the second third rounder from?
by NorthLeft12 on Oct 25, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Braylon Edwards.
And when he was doing so-so in Detroit he cost a third rounder PLUS Leigh Bodden
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 25, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry, you mean that the Browns gave Detroit a third and Leigh Bodden.
Unfortunately for Detroit, Moronelli and his idiot son in law totally misused Bodden. The Lions cut him and now Bodden is starting for New England and doing very well.
I still do not understand why the Lions cut Bodden. Its not as if they were overflowing with secondary talent.

I'd be surprised if a team gives up higher than a 3rd rounder for Shaun Rogers.

Also...
LOL at there being 2 of these threads. I don’t think that 2 threads will do it anyway….more like a prayer.
Getting Mangini just set them back 3 years.

O Line
I think Cleveland should turn itself into the premiere destination for O Linemen, and therefore draft a killer LT and put him at RT with the first pick and pick another with our second pick put him at G, overpay them both and make statement. That would start to give the Browns an identity and something a hardworking town like Cleveland could hang its hat on.
by Pizzacake on Oct 26, 2009 2:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Why not just draft a hat rack then?
Like maybe in the late fourth-early fifth, before the good ones are taken.

I AM.
We’ve been drafting hat racks for years now- the only exception being an O lineman. Imagine a Cleveland Football Browns team with a line that could actually push guys around! A team that could give a Quarterback all day to throw. A team that could run to the right side of the field.
by Pizzacake on Oct 27, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im glad you arent the GM.
And why would you overpay them?
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 27, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I at least I’d have a strategy and the guts to do it. I’d overpay to make a statement and show O Linemen throughout the league that they’re valued here as much or more than any position player- to make Cleveland the place where the Best O Linemen want to come to.

That sounds like a college football recruiting strategy
FA go where the money goes regardless of whose offering it. A history of over-paying players hurts more than it helps.
