Oklahoma's Sam Bradford opts for surgery; intends to enter 2010 NFL Draft

Oklahoma junior quarterback Sam Bradford announced today that he will have season-ending surgery.

He suffered a sprained right AC joint against Brigham Young and sat out two games. He sat out two games before coming back to help the Sooners beat Baylor. Against Texas on Oct. 17, he reinjured the shoulder.

If his rehabilitation goes as planned, Bradford said he'll enter the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bradford's surgery will be performed by renowned sports surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

"I dreamed about coming to Oklahoma my whole life," Bradford said in a release. "That's the reason I came back for this season. And I came back to play, not sit on the bench. That's the reason I tried to play after the injury. I'm very disappointed that it didn't work out differently."

On the season, Bradford had 562 yards passing with two touchdowns. He was completing a career-low 56.5 percent of his passes.

Bradford won the 2008 Heisman Trophy. For his career, Bradford completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 8,403 yards and 88 touchdowns. He started 30 games.

Entering this season, Bradford was the most highly regarded quarterback prospect in the nation. He earned high grades with his, accuracy easy throwing motion and strong enough arm. The belief among talent evaluators is that Bradford needed to get stronger to handle the rigors of NFL football.

While Bradford came into the season a few pounds larger, most starting NFL quarterback weigh 230 pounds or more. Oklahoma lists Bradford at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds.

Interesting

Is it safe to say he’s out of the Top 10 now or if he has a good Pro Day/Combine is he still there?

if we wanted him enough

we might could get him.

Just because 1 guy got hurt doesnt mean that everyone will suddenly go pro now

by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 26, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

It does when the QB that got hurt was expected to be the top overall draft pick and you have a chance now to surpass him and maybe be top pick.

And the only guys that I’m saying should definitely come out early is Jimmy Clausen (who I think WILL be the first QB taken in the draft) and Jake Locker. I definitely don’t think Jevan Snead should come out though. And I’m still up in the air on Ryan Mallett.

Why the Broncos

I think they like what Kyle Orton is bringing to the table right now…

If they like stats then yea. He still is the weakest part
Of their team

by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 26, 2009 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Dont get me wrong, Orton has been brilliant thus far for Denver. But his he really the long term answer?

I could be wrong but I don’t think so. I’m almost certain they’ll take a QB in next year’s draft whom they can groom into the QB of the future. Kyle Orton is going to be there for next year, and groom a QB like Brett Farve did For Aaron Rodgers and Chad Pennington did for Chad Henne. But I definitely don’t think Kyle Orton is the long term answer in Denver.

by JP 23 on Oct 25, 2009 11:47 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I hear you

But they don’t need to use a first on a guy they intend to groom. They can find value in the second or later. Like those mentioned above, Chad Henne was a second rounder, and Aaron Rodgers was taken in the late first and was thought to be a second round prospect. David Garrard was drafted in the fourth. Value can be found later if you have a capable starter now.

Why wouldn’t they take Bradford? They dont have many needs and so what if he has to earn his job. And by the way Aaron rogers wasn’t considered a second rounder and you mention a few non first round succesful QBs, but I could name a lot more unsuccesful ones

by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 26, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Ya. I can name a few unsuccessful too.

John Beck?
Trent Edwards?
Brodie Croyle?

And please don’t name anyone past the 3rd round. Any QB taken after the 3rd round is never ever considered the QB of the future when they’re drafted.

by JP 23 on Oct 26, 2009 6:41 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Those three you named, Brian Brohm, Chris Redman, Josh McCown, Brian Griese, CHARLIE FRYE, Kellen Clemens, Tarvaris Jackson, Charlie Whitehurst, Dave Ragone, Quincy Carter, Chris Simms…

Is that enough yet?

by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 26, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

No, you're absolutely right. But if you wait until the second or third, they're looking at drafting a Zac Robinson or Max Hall instead of a Bradford or Ryan Mallett. What would you rather have?

They don’t have many needs anyways. Getting your sure fire QB of the future at the start of the draft and addressing those small needs after isn’t such a bad idea.

by JP 23 on Oct 26, 2009 6:35 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Word

But then it isn’t as big of a let down should that quarterback not develop. A first rounder has more chance of being great, no doubt… but there are plenty of first round busts as well. Jamarcus Russell so far, David Carr, Matt Leinart so far, Alex Smith, Byron Leftwich(though I think he isn’t one, many insist he is), Ryan Leaf…

But in the second and later teams have found steals, Chad Henne 2nd, Drew Brees 2nd, Tony Romo(another lucky one), Hasselbeck was a sixth rounder, Matt Cassel was undrafted, Favre was a second rounder…

I just don’t like to take quarterbacks in the first. The broncos don’t have many other needs, except maybe help in the secondary, and on the defensive line. I’m a much bigger fan of getting a few quarterbacks later and developing them to see which can start in the NFL.

Cassel was not undrafted, and alex smith might not be a bust

by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 27, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

My B

He was a seventh rounder. And Alex Smith may not end up being a bust, but I’m not quite ready to label him as a great selection after one good half.

There are too many teams that are looking for a QB this year for anyone to slip that far.

Ie. Washington, St. Louis, Oakland, Buffalo, San Fran [unless Smith resurrects his career], Tennessee, Carolina, and Cleveland. Jacksonville might also be interested.

Might even have teams trading up to grab one of the top three or four.

I think i don't have to say Tom Brady was drafted in the later rounds.

Its a moot point.

Tom Brady was projected to be a back up not a QB of the future. That was just plain luck! How many Tom Brady's are there in the league?

Sorry, but I find it very hard to believe that Bellichik really believed Tom Brady would turn into this when he drafted him. He saw him as a back up just like everyone else. That was just luck. Plain and simple. Do you really think that in most drafts you can find a Tom Brady in the 6th round? I don’t.

by JP 23 on Oct 26, 2009 9:29 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

there's steals in every draft.

Otherwise there wouldn’t be much use for those 6th, 7th round picks

I still wouldn't touch Bradford

with the Cowboys draft picks.

And that was last year as the Heisman.
