2010 NFL mock draft
Here is the first half of my mock draft. The other half will go up tonight after I get home from work.
Quick note: I swapped Sam Bradford in the draft for Washington quarterback Jake Locker. The reason was mainly following an email exchange with 3k from Turf Show Times. And listening to Bradford's recent press conference, it sounds like he's ready to go pro.
For the draft order, I used the one put together by ejrulz in his mock draft.
1. St. Louis Rams - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
The Rams have no direction on offense. Taking a quarterback first overall would provide as much. Bradford has only played a half this season, but listening to a recent press conference, he sounds like a man ready to go pro.
2. Cleveland Browns - Eric Berry, SS, Tennessee
The Browns might have Abram Elam currently at strong safety, but Berry looks like a player who comes along once a decade. The Browns need help on the right side of their line, but Berry is hard to pass up.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Whether it's Suh or Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, the Buccaneers need help along the defensive line. Suh has been arguably the best player in college football this season and will be a difference maker immediately.
4. Kansas City Chiefs - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Branden Albert has been only average, and that's not good enough for a left tackle. Bulaga has the ability to be an elite player. If his health checks out fine, there's no reason to think he won't be a top five selection.
5. Tennessee Titans - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
Clearly the Tennessee has skipped a beat this season without Albert Haynesworth. Many considered McCoy an early first rounder had he come out following his redshirt sophomore season. He's a quick, penetrating defensive end with great character.
6. San Francisco 49ers (via Carolina) - Taylor Mays, FS, USC
This is just a great fit for San Francisco. He's the physical presence the team doesn't have in its secondary. Mays might conjure thoughts of Ronnie Lott for Niners fans.
7. Detroit Lions - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
This would be a tough spot for Detroit with the top two defensive tackles off the board. If that's the case, the team could reach a little bit to take the left tackle many expected them to this season.
8. Oakland Raiders - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
Lame Al Davis jokes aside, Dunlap is a great fit for the Raiders. Richard Seymour's contract is up at the end of the year and he's not expected to re-sign. Even with Seymour, a better pass rush is needed.
9. Buffalo Bills - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Really, is Trent Edwards the future of quarterbacking for Buffalo? The team seems to have settled on Demetrius Bell at left tackle and no outside linebackers are really worth a top 10 pick.
10. Seattle Seahawks - Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech
It can be hard to justify taking a running back this early in the draft, but Dwyer has immense talent. Julius Jones is better as a second option and Edgerrin James has shown it's time for him to retire.
11. Miami Dolphins - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
While Miami could use a nose tackle or future pass rushing linebacker, Bryant could be the best receiver in the draft since Calvin Johnson. Being ruled ineligible shouldn't affect Bryant's draft stock.
12. Arizona Cardinals - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Williams is still a project at left tackle, but Mike Gandy has struggled for the Cardinals. At the least, Williams is an NFL-ready run blocker.
13. Washington Redskins - Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
Clearly Redskins owner Dan Snyder is done with current starter Jason Campbell. The team tried to get Jay Cutler and Mark Sanchez. McCoy is a dependable passer who has better arm strength than people think.
14. San Diego Chargers - Damian Williams, WR, Southern California
The Chargers could be forced to replace receivers Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers after this season. Williams has emerged as a legit No. 1 receiver for the Trojans.
15. Houston Texans - Joe Haden, CB, Florida
Everyone expected the Texans to take a difference maker in the secondary this year, and they didn't. Haden can get out position in pass coverage, but he's a great all-around corner.
16. Pittsburgh Steelers - Brandon Spikes, MLB, Florida
Steelers fans might be convinced Lawrence Timmons is the future inside, but I am not. Good middle linebackers average more than three tackles a game. Spikes would be a steal here. And even if Timmons sticks at middle linebacker, James Farrior is 34.
17. Green Bay Packers - Ciron Black, OT, LSU
Black might not be the best left tackle, but he's the best one available in this scenario. The Packers clearly need help along the offensive line.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars - Morgan Burnett, SS, Georgia Tech
Everyone seems to think Tim Tebow should be the choice here, but the team has a better chance of winning immediately by filling other holes. Wide receiver is a possibility as well, but Mike Sims-Walker is having a breakout season.
19. Dallas Cowboys - Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU
Since getting rid of Terrell Owens, justifiably, the Cowboys have lacked a dependable wide receiver. That's what LaFell would provide. He's not the fastest or the flashiest, but he gets the job done.
20. Atlanta Falcons - Greg Hardy, DE, Mississippi
Thirty-four games into his career, it's official: Jamaal Anderson is a bust. He has two sacks, which won't cut it for a 4-3 end. Hardy, when motivated, is as good of a pass rusher as there is in the nation.
21. Philadelphia Eagles - Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
Philadelphia's current group of outside linebackers feature a bunch of players who are only average. Kindle could be a sensation in the team's blitz-heavy scheme.
22. Cincinnati Bengals - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Gresham's season-ending knee injury shouldn't stop a team from taking him in the first round. That's especially true if you consider that the Bengals' starting tight end is Daniel Coats.
23. New England Patriots - Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
Whether they used him inside or outside, McClain could make a big impact for the Patriots. Other than Jerod Mayo and an aging Adalius Thomas, New England is somewhat light on linebacker talent.
24. Denver Broncos (via Chicago) - Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
Cody would be the last piece the Broncos need to finish off the conversion to a 3-4. While I'm not the biggest fan of Cody's, the Broncos need someone in the middle to regularly take up multiple blockers.
25. New York Jets - Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse
In the Jets' 3-4, Jones would get moved over to end, a position the team needs to address. Jones has the quickness and size to play end and would give coach Rex Ryan another good pressure guy.
26. San Francisco 49ers - Eric Norwood, OLB, South Carolina
Many expect San Francisco to take a quarterback, but Shaun Hill might be the kind of game manager coach Mike Singletary wants. Norwood would help a pass rush that's below-average from the linebacker spot.
27. Baltimore Ravens - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
Tate is the kind of playmaking wide receiver the Ravens have never had. He can make big plays out of short passes and will be able to help on special teams.
28. Minnesota Vikings - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Ray Edwards is a free agent after the season and is average at best. Morgan has shown flashes of dominance this season. He can get after the passer or stay at home and handle the run.
29. New York Giants - Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
Barry Cofield and Fred Robbins are facing free agency following this season and if both don't come back, tackle could be a big need. Austin has been inconsistent thus far, but has great talent. A coach like Tom Coughlin could harness it nicely.
30. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver) - Charles Brown, OT, Southern California
The career of left tackle Walter Jones is winding down. Brown is a similar kind of offensive lineman who has good athleticism and drive. While safety and quarterback can be considered needs, no players seem worth this slot.
31. Indianapolis Colts - Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia
Some project Capers to play left tackle, but he's been on the right side for the Mountaineers this season. Either spot he plays, the Colts could use him. Middle linebacker could be a need, but that is a position that traditionally be addressed later in the draft.
32. New Orleans Saints - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
Outside linebacker and defensive tackle are the top needs for an overachieving Saints defense. Weatherspoon would be a perfect fit outside. He's a good tackler and can make up for the mistakes of teammates.

And Casey Hampton is 32
Oh and his backup Chris Hoke is 33 and there is nobody behind him. And Cody is still on the board.
Cody is good
and he would have a nice fit with you in Pitt….
but there are always large NT’s that fall in the draft, like a Ron Brace.
Would wouldn’t think simply ensuring the next great LB group of Woodley, Timmons and then Spikes would be too tempting?
He fits that LB mold to a ‘T’.
What the f$%k is the internet?
That was my thought process. And Cody doesn’t seem like a player Tomlin would like. He’s kind of lazy.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
Both points Valid.
Terrence Cody, does seem lazy but he doesn’t seem like a dirtbag; just a guy with an eating problem. Given the choice between Spikes and Cody I’d have to flip a coin.

Hampton also has an eating problem
If it came to Spikes or Cody I would have to go with the postion without a lot of good players available: NT. It’s easier to get a good LB later in the draft(Foote) than it is to get a NT especially with the premium on 3-4 players.

QB's
The Browns, Titans and Raiders really need to draft a good young QB. Is the problem after Bradford, neither McCoy nor Claussen are worth taking that high?
Browns – We’ll see what Anderson can do the rest of this season. Check back after the next mock I do.
Titans and Raiders – Still a lot of money tied up in the position.
And that is kind of a problem. There were a few teams that could use a quarterback later in the first.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
Yeah.
I’ve noticed this, too. Sometimes needs, talent and the salary cap don’t match-up well for perfect mocks!

Dunlap is a very likely pick for the Raiders
Especially if Mays is off the board. Davis will fall in love with their measurables and upside, regardless of whatever flaws they have. But it doesn’t matter if Seymour wants to re-sign or not; they’ll franchise him so fast, his head will spin. Asomugha is re-signed for three more years, so they don’t have to worry about losing him. They’ll tag Seymour for at least one season and possibly two. As a Raider fan, I’m still holding out hope for Brandon Spikes. Or a Ndamukong Suh miracle, if he slips (which he won’t.)
Bulauga over Okung? Don’t see it happening, but who knows at this point.
Wouldn’t be shocked if Berry slips a bit to the 5-8 range. Not because he’s not one of the top 3 players in the draft (he is) but this might be one of those cases where teams have to draft need over sheer talent.
I still don’t wonder if Mora and Knapp in Seattle wouldn’t fall in love with Colt McCoy. It could happen.
Would not be surprised to see Terrence Cody go to the 49ers or Steelers. The 49ers need an upgrade in the middle and any questions about Cody’s work ethic and motivation have a two word answer: Mike Singletary. As for the Steelers, they could let Cody sit on the bench as backup for a year or two behind Hampton, get in shape and ease him into the lineup. It’s exactly how they’ve handled Timmons and Mendenhall and look to be going that way with Ziggy Hood.
Bulaga over Okung is just a personal preference.
My opinion on teams drafting need over talent is that good teams can fill needs while bad teams should go after whomever is the best player available if they can fit a decent need. That’s the case with Berry to Cleveland.
I was so close to putting McCoy in Seattle actually.
With SF, it was the same reason on why I didn’t have Cody go to Pitt. Can’t imagine Singletary being fine with a guy who regularly checks in at 360+.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
I like it but
Do you really think Miami will take a WR? I dunno Parcells rarely takes recievers.
Love it other then that man!
Well it looks like my Jaguars aren't #16 or worse
so i can’t critique or agree with anything there. An observation: 3 Gators got selected. Thats interesting.

As a Seahawks fan, I feel that this would be the worst case scenario.
We don’t get the S, OT, QB, or DT that we want, and end up with a RB, the LB of the offense.
Like I said, I almost went QB there. Put in an OT there with their second pick. Safety kind of sucks after Mays and Berry.
Mocking the Draft: Your NFL Draft source.
While I can't agree with where you put the Steelers
Spikes could be very high on the Steelers draft board this spring. I wouldn’t give up on Timmons yet though. He’s gotten off to a slow start due to some injuries, and it’s going to take time for him to get use to being on the field full time now. I will give you that he’s not the run stuffer Larry Foote was, but he’s much more athletic and valuable in the pass defense.

Doesn’t it always seem like you guys catch some guy who has no business falling to your pick?! I hate you all for it! Ha!

Id love to see the Redskins get McCoy...
add him in another line of FAIL of QB’s for the Foreskins…
What the f$%k is the internet?
IF the Titans finished 5th, and IF Clausen went pro even scouts like Bradford better, why would the Titans not take Clausen?
by TheRealSlimShady on Oct 9, 2009 6:03 PM EDT reply actions
it WOULD make sense...
but the DO have a ton of cash tied into VY and Kerry Collins.
They have to give VY at least from whenever they decide to start him this season and next season too.
They’d be better suited grabbing a McCoy or a Suh if they fall to them somehow.
What the f$%k is the internet?
IF they draft 5th, that will probably mean that Vince Young and Kerry Collins both failed.

So you’ll throw the towel in on Vince, but not Brady?
"It's almost like we play a kid's game for a king's ransom"

Vince has had one more year than Quinn. The Titans have an all around better team than the Browns, so they have less needs. Vince also has better talent around him, and has had good coaches, while Brady has had terrible ones.
Brady was thrown into a situation to fail. I think that if he could get with a different team, there is a chance he could be a solid to good QB.

interesting pick for the Jaguars

Very good Mock.
Im not sure about the 49ers not taking offense, especially if Clausen is there.
I also dont see Cincy drafting 22nd.
McClain would play inside at New England because he plays inside in Bama’s 3-4.
I dont know much about Austin and Burnett, so I need to try to find some info on them.
And I guess I’m just not as high on Damian Williams as everyone else is.
Everything else falls into place nicely

So far I'm happy with Charlie Johnson
so a RT wouldn’t be a bad thing at all. I’ll be interested in the Colts left tackle situation tonight. It should tell whether they have a new RT in-house. Charlie Johnson hasn’t practiced this week and there’s been no word on who will start if he can’t go. Tony Ugoh will either have a shot to justify his existence or we’ll see how ridiculously far out of the teams favor he’s fallen if they start Dan Federkiel or Jamey Richard over him.

Broncos.
I can’t complain about Cody, especially not at that spot. We’d then have three very big, very talented and yet questionable intangibles up front for the future. That said, if we could line up with Marcus Thomas, Terrence Cody and Chris Baker up front, I think that’d be scary…

That’s a very good pick for the Bills if they end up at that 9th spot finishing with a 6-10 record or so.
Playing Realistic Optimist at Buffalo Rumblings since 2008. Ignoring the grumblings on Rumblings.
While I don't think
the Giants are gonna lose both Cofield and Robbins, they probably will draft a DT.
When I think of Marvin Austin, for some reason William Joseph sticks out in my mind. I think he does have the size and talent to potentially be better than any of the current tackles on the Gints, I think they may pass.
If they go first round DT, I’d love for Arthur Jones to fall to them. He’s the only reason ‘Cuse defense stops anyone. Dude is an absolute monster who when the offseason workouts come and teams get all the ish together, I think he’ll go a lot higher than where you have him.
Given who’s going where in this mock and where the Giants are, I’d have no problem if they drafted one of those 2 OT’s that went after the, preferably Charles Brown. Another lineman from USC, Kris O’Dowd, would also be a nice pick.
Didn’t mean to say I hate the Marvin Austin pick, cuz if he does end up a Giant on draft day, I’d have no problem at all with the pick.
What the f$%k is the internet?
..
but good mock overall.
I really can’t see that from now till the offseason that a ton of these picks are gonna be different.
Obviously who actually declares is gonna tell a lot of it tho.

I like the pick you have for us, a defensive end is definitely the way I think we need to go with this one.. Arthur Jones is a nice looking prospect so definitely would not say no. One name I have heard being banded about is Ndamukong Suh, what’s your opinion on him?

Yer, however I don’t watch a great deal of college football and have never seen him play, so was just trying to get a feel for what kind of a player he was, what he brings to the table. Just because I have heard his name around certain Jets circles.

Unless you all trade up, you all probably wont get him. He lives in opponents’ backfields and I have heard him compared to Seymore.
Top 5 IMO

Nice he just admits he doesn’t watch much CFB and you give him that description of Suh? Great analysis.
David, Ndamukong Suh for a 34 D would be moved to DE which I do believe he could handle. Doesn’t have a great first step but not many 300 pounders do. Great use of hands whether against OL or batting down a ball or even picking it off (has two returned for TD). Great motor and very consistent player. Durability is no issue only a knee injury during his freshman year (I believe). Great kid, great player.

I like Burnett for the Jags
He’s a physical specimen who gets his hands on the ball, which is something we have had trouble with at safety the past two years. While I love him as a player, I wonder if he could make a switch to free safety, as we have two guys we like at strong safety in Gerald Alexander and Sean Considine. Or we could keep Burnett at SS, and move Alexander to free safety, as he can play both safety positions.
What about Reggie Nelson is the common question. The truth is the guy just gets out of position in pass coverage too much. He’s got great skills, but hasn’t got it together mentally yet, and many Jags fans, myself included to an extent, wonder if he ever will. I want to keep him, but move him to nickel corner.

Nelson
I agree with everything you said about Nelson. When he was drafted I thought he was going to be a great fit for the Jags, and become one of the NFL’s big time ball-hawks….but mentally he just hasn’t been there. I’m not giving up on him yet, but he needs to start making plays soon.
