Thursday night NFL Draft watch notes
Tonight during the South Florida/Rutgers game, it will be typically filled with plenty of NFL scouts.
But according to Chris Steuber of Scout.com, several other notables will be attendance. Among them is Patriots director of player personnel director Jason Licht. Other lead personnel men there will be Terry McDonough of Jacksonville, Rick Spielman of Minnesota and Les Snead of Atlanta.
None of those top the New York Giants who will send general manager Jerry Reese, director of college scouting Mark Ross and an additional scout.
Why all the love? That's because South Florida could possibly send five defensive players to the NFL next year.
The best among them could be junior college transfer Jason Pierre-Paul. A tall, lanky defensive end, Pierre-Paul has 9.5 tackles for a loss this season and two sacks. But his upside is tremendous. He's 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds and all arms and legs. He could become a dominant force along the defensive line if he returns for his senior season.
Senior end George Selvie will also get plenty of attention. Steuber reported on his Twitter page that Selvie is a favorite of the Vikings. While Selvie's sack numbers are down this year, he's always a factor. Few ends possess his quickness at the snap and Selvie can make plays all over the field.
Safety Nate Allen also has plenty of intrigue, as do cornerback Jerome Murphy and linebacker Kion Wilson.
However, the best player in the stadium could be playing for the Scarlet Knights. That would be left tackle Anthony Davis. A junior, Davis is expected to declare early for the 2010 NFL Draft.
Considered by many evaluators as a possible top 10 pick, Davis made his name last season by shutting Selvie down.
"George can run," Davis told reporters about Selvie. "Looking at him on film, he can get from sideline to sideline. He’s a great player, a great pass rusher. I’m looking forward to going against him."

Good stuff.
I;m sure they’ll all be looking at others, USF is fairly stacked.
JPP and Nate Allen I’m sure are on Reese’s radar, probably some of their younger players too.
"It ain't over till its over"---
and all those other players too....
Anthony Davis is a good fat who would be nice to put at LT and move Diehl back to LG.

Gene Smith
Probably wants a look at Nate Allen. Maybe Selvie too if we can’t find a pass rusher by the end of the season.

The Penguins actually have a wide receiver who ain’t bad. He’s probably a UDFA guy, but he’s decent.
Donald Jones
6’1, 210 pounds | Youngstown State | Wide receiver
- He has 60 receptions this season for 587 yards. He has good size but doesn’t have a lot of speed, as far as I know.
Don’t really see anyone else they’d be going to check out, so it’s more of a due diligence trip.

A bit more on Jones
From the Youngstown daily:
The Youngstown State football team hadn’t even completed its first full week of practice and was just putting on the pads for the first time, but NFL scouts were already in the stadium. They came to take an early look at No. 81, who many feel just might be the most talented receiver the Penguins have ever had. Senior Donald Jones, a junior college transfer who joined Youngstown State last season, is getting a lot of attention from the scouts. But the 6-foot-2, 210 pound speedster with great hands has only one thing on his mind right now and that is helping the Penguins to a winning season and a national championship. Jones played in all 12 games for the Penguins last season, starting the last eight, and teamed up with starting quarterback Brandon Summers for 31 catches for a team-best 510 yards and seven touchdowns.

I think all are mostly undrafted fa types but from Illinois St. I’ve heard of (never actually seen)WR Eyad Salem and from Youngstown St. CB Jarvis Richards and DT Mychal Savage. Savage seems to have decent size at 6’2 306.
Like I said never seen any of them play just read about them.

I really like him and am leaning toward moving him to #2 OT behind Okung.

He shut down Romerus of Pitt, but I didn’t see him against USF. Did he dominate Selvie?

yup.
and JPP. In the run game and pass block.

Do you think his footwork is fast enough to contain speed rushers in the NFL?
by TheRealSlimShady on Nov 13, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions
Selvie's as fast as many speed rushers in the NFL
save for maybe a Dumervil, Freeney or Mathis, so yea he can handle it. He as matched up a few times against JPP, and did well against him too.
They constantly ran to his side, and if the Rutgers RB had some real speed…he would have doubled his running totals, Davis was opening up the grand Canyon over there
He’s a lot like Ryan Clady. His weight seems to be in check. He’s now listed at 6"6 325, and definitely looks it compared to last year (where he was more like 360).
I can’t believe there were so many mocks that had guys like Ciron Black, Charles Brown even Bruce Campbell ahead of him.
Guys like Campbell may be more athletic, but Davis is the most polished and overall he’s got to be the #2 OT in the draft.
Okung is the #1 tackle in the draft, but its a lot closer than most think between him and Davis.
