Saturday NFL Draft watch notes

• After starting the season off slowly, Michigan defensive end Brandon Graham has become a big factor. On the season he has 17 tackles for a loss and 6.5 sacks. Wisconsin's physical offensive line will be a big challenge for Graham. Against Wisconsin last season Graham burst onto the national scene with three sacks. If he does that again, some might start to consider him a first-round prospect.

Graham might not even be the best pass rusher at Camp Randall Stadium. That just may be Badgers junior O'Brien Schofield. On the year, he has 18.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Schofield has been consistent all season.

• Against Virginia Tech, the athleticism of Maryland left tackle Bruce Campbell will be tested. he could line up against Jason Worilds, who is as quick off the snap as any defensive end you'll find. Campbell has had some injury issues, but when he's healthy he's very good.

One Hokie to watch is senior linebacker Cody Grimm. It would be a shock if he was drafted, but don't be surprised if he makes an NFL roster as a special teams player. He's all effort and leads the Hokies in tackles with 79. He might be only 5-foot-11 and 210 pounds, but he's tenacious.

• If you only watch one game of TCU's Jerry Hughes this season, make it today against Utah. Hughes may get a few snaps against Utah's best offensive lineman Zane Beadles. Most of Hughe's plays will come against Tony Bergstrom, a developing sophomore right tackle. Hughes is having another standout season but he hasn't been very active in his last two games.

• Washington quarterback Jake Locker could have a big day against Oregon State's 113th ranked pass defense. Locker has been pretty ordinary the last three weeks and needs a good showing to really cement himself as a top prospect.

• Alabama might have the second-best rush defense in the nation, but the Crimson Tide haven't seen a running back like Mississippi State's Anthony Dixon. The bruising senior bounced back last week rushing for 252 yards against Vanderbilt after struggling versus Florida. When Dixon collides with Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody it will be a sight to see.

• Pittsburgh defensive end Greg Romeus has been somewhat overshadowed this season by the likes of Hughes, Graham and Georgia Tech's Derrick Morgan. But make no mistake about it, Romeus is a playmaker. He has nine sacks on the year and can hold up well against the run. Playing against Notre Dame will be a good challenge for Romeus to show he deserves to be mentioned with the best ends in college football.

• The single best matchup to watch today will be the Ohio State defensive ends against the Iowa offensive tackles. Last week, the Buckeyes' Cameron Heyward had a breakout game with three sacks against Penn State. Fellow end Thaddeus Gibson is quick and can get to the ball fast. Iowa's tackles -- Bryan Bulaga and Kyle Calloway -- might be the best bookends in the nation.

Jerry Hughes

He actually will be matched up against Tony Bergstrem and not Zane Beadles

Thanks! I reworded it for more clarity.

Pretty great season for the MWC, eh?

Yes it is

Just keeping it going like last year.

What do you think of Utah Safety Robert Johnson, he is a senior and huge play maker.

When I re-do my rankings again, he’ll be among the top six free safeties. Really smart, instinctual player.

Bulaga impressed me today. And what year is OSU’s Herring?

For Ohio State? Do you mean Dan Herron? He’s a redshirt sophomore.

Bulaga is finally looking like himself

he had a rough couple weeks after getting back from the thyroid issue.

But Riley Reiff looks like a stud. Freshman been playing OL for less than a year and held down the LT spot in Bulaga’s absence really really well.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

His speed is going to kill him. He made Taylor Mays look bad today, though.

Yea, but he will still find a place on a team that already has a speed back.

So I guess I'm one of the 5 people who can actually watch TCU-Utah on TV at home

TCU taking it to the Utes right now. I know this isn’t the Utah team that rocked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, but they aren’t fodder either. Shame they’ll get shut out of the national title picture minus a Texas upset.

Every Junior/senior Gator player on Defense has their stock rising

after the SC game. It was a nice game.

Haden has 2 forced fumbles, a sack and an INT
Cunningham has a sack or so, good pressure
etc

I saw Dunlap getting pancaked by a TE a few times....

I don’t envy the Raiders….

depends on where he goes...

He’s a bottom of the first round talent at this point. Potential to be great, yea, but motivation? I don’t see it.

He gets drafted by anyone in the top 5….at most he’s Gaines Adams part 2.

If he goes towards the bottom end, or even the 2nd round, he may have more motivation or even a better D-Line to help him along.

Cuz he DOES have the size and speed.

Another year, another underachieving Mario Williams clone. Guy simply looks like he was put on this earth to play defensive end, but once you look beyond the physical attributes, something’s just not there… Recent honorees include Calais Campbell and Michael Johnson. I don’t know if Dunlap will fall out of the first completely like those other two, but he might. Teams are maybe beginning to catch on to these guys (Michael Johnson, unlike Campbell, even rocked the combine and still slid to round 3).

If he lands with an NFL team that knows how to develop/coach linemen and essentially plays it’s linemen to almost extensively pressure/shoot up a gap, he could be alright. I’m not sure he’d be best as a 3-4 end or in a more complex 4-3 system (e.g., Eagles and their zone blitz scheme). All this sort of limits the options. Good fits might include a team like the Titans or maybe Detroit (Jim Schwartz) in the first half of the first (or second) round, or the Giants, Vikings, or Colts (though he doesn’t at all strike me as a Polian guy) in the lower half of the first. But who knows?

I do think Cunningham is better than Dunlap

but I’d be glad with the Raiders getting Dunlap.

That would be alright

but personally only if we could get at least a decent Qb Prospect in the 4th. I rather get

1st Morgan Burnett (Safety)
3rd QB (Tony Pike, Dan Lefevour, Tim Hiller, or Tebow)
4th maybe a no-name Gene Smith Gem pass rusher.

Haden is a good Cornerback

I think a Blitzing team would welcome him. He can be left out a island, do his bail and come back thing, or be used in a corner blitz.

Observation

Golden Tate might have the strongest legs and hands of any wide receiver in the nation. Freaky player. He’s going to be a star immediately in the NFL.

So how about this scenario

Bama loses to Auburn in the iron Bowl
Bama beats UF in the SEC Championship game
Texas loses in the Big XII title game

TCU vs Cincinnati in the national championship game!

I'd love to see TCU vs. Bama.

I don’t think it would be a blowout either. I think TCU’s D can keep Bama’s O in check, their O really isn’t all that good.

Then Bama’s D vs. TCU’s O would be some really good football to watch (on paper at least)

I’m not sure on Cincy tho. I think Cincy would get teh crap kicked out of them by not only TCU, but Texas, Bama or UF.

"It ain't over till its over"---

haha, first thing i noticed was UF losing

go figure :).

I think Bama loses to Florida in SEC championship, Its Florida vs Texas in the National Championship (Texas gets to be in it after getting snubbed in 2006 i think).

I’d love a TCU-Cincy matchup in one of the runner up BCS bowls.

Apparently no one on ND’s offense that isn’t named Golden Tate doesn’t know how to catch.

by TheRealSlimShady on Nov 15, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Most of the offense..yea, they don't suck

The defense does suck tho. Aside from the Nevada and WSU games, every one’s been a nail biter that could have went either way.

Yea, Tate probably doesn’t win, probably cuz of ND’s record.

And why would Harbaugh leave? Stanford’s on the rise. Why go to a mess like ND?

"It ain't over till its over"---

by FreeBradshaw on Nov 15, 2009 11:03 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He might go to ND because really our team isn’t a mess; our coaching staff is. I honestly think we have more talent than Stanford, we just can’t use/develop it well enough. And even if Clausen and Tate go pro, we still have a very promising QB in Crist and a stud WR in Floyd. Plus we return all of our RBs and most of our O-line. And we only lose 1 defensive starter (unless Teo takes his mission trip this year.)

And also if he comes to ND, he will get a rather large paycheck.

One more reason he would come is for the attention. Whoever ND signs as their coach becomes one of the most (if not the most) talked about coaches in football.

Teal..

I don’t know where your going.

If Stanford is undefeated…kinda like if Iowa would have been indefeated this year or a couple years ago if Boston College was undefeated…they’d be in the National Champ game with not a single question (unless…maybe there’s 2 other deserving undefeateds).

If Boise’s undefeated…they still more than likely are on the outside looking in, even if a SEC team has one or even two loses.

Stanford being in the Pac-10, if they were ever undefeated or only had one loss, they’d be in a BCS bowl, no problem (Rose Bowl actually….)
