Mock Draft 2.0: Still Rough!
Hey guys! It's been too long since I posted my first stab at mocking the 2010 NFL draft, so I figured I'd just go with a really rough attempt just to get something out. To be honest, my value chart, understanding of team needs and general draft trends are not matching up in a way that I feel comfortable with yet. As usual, I'm using current winning percentage to determine the order with point differential breaking the ties. Anyway, I'd really appreciate whatever constructive feedback you can provide because I need your help breaking the mental block that I seem to be experiencing with draft mocking this year! My most recent effort is below the fold, with some notes attached.
1. St. Louis Rams – Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
2. Cleveland Browns – Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
3. Detroit Lions – Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
5. Oakland Raiders – Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
6. Kansas City Chiefs – Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
7. Buffalo Bills – Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
8. Tennessee Titans – Greg Hardy, DE, Mississippi
9. Washington Redskins – Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
10. Seattle Seahawks – C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
11. San Francisco 49ers (from the Carolina Panthers) – Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama
12. Denver Broncos (from the Chicago Bears) – Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho
13. Miami Dolphins – Rolondo McClain, ILB, Alabama
14. San Francisco 49ers – Charles Brown, OT, USC
15. New York Jets – Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee
16. Jacksonville Jaguars – Taylor Mays, S, USC
17. Houston Texans – Joe Haden, CB, Florida
18. Atlanta Falcons – Ricky Sapp, DE, Clemson
19. New York Giants – Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
20. Baltimore Ravens – Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU
21. Green Bay Packers – Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
22. Philadelphia Eagles – Jerry Hughes, OLB, TCU
23. Seattle Seahawks (from the Denver Broncos) – Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
24. San Diego Chargers – Arthur Jones, DL, Syracuse
25. Arizona Cardinals – Brandon Graham, OLB, Michigan
26. Pittsburgh Steelers – Ian Williams, DT, Notre Dame
27. Dallas Cowboys – Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia
28. New England Patriots – Jared Odrick, DL, Penn State
29. Cincinnati Bengals – Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
30. Minnesota Vikings – Everson Griffin, DE, USC
31. Indianapolis Colts – Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
32. New Orleans Saints – Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
Notes: if this were to hold true, there would be great value in the second round as far as RB, CB and WR is concerned... of the notable prospects, I'm holding out Jake Locker at this point...

Depending on whether the person thinks Witherspoon can be a T-2 MLB
the Colts pick is either great or terrible. OLB won’t happen in the first round. MLB very well could.

Yo man...
Carlos Dunlap is NOT going in the top 5. He’s a useless POS. I don’t even think undead AL’s that dumb, let alone Tampa, who seem to know what they need.
Flip Eric Berry and Dunlap, then you might have something.
Lotsa good, lotsa questionable things aside from Dunlap (Berry’s probably going higher too, but that’s probably the lowest for him that’s possible).
Iupati? I can see a team grabbing him at the end of the 1st, but that’s too high.
Anthony Davis might just be the #2 OT in the entire draft, and he’s not even in the first (and Iupati is?) Trent Williams?—there’s a reason Bradford’s out for the season, and it came from the left side of OU’s line.
Greg Hardy is too high, too many injuries to be taken that high.
Selvish Capers? Ian Williams? The Browns could definitely use a WR, but I dunno about with the #2 overall. They got a lot picks too and it could be a fairly deep draft (maybe Arrelious Benn falls)
I like the Giants pick…

What about him?
He was a top 15 pick anyway.
Dunlap hasn’t even played his way in the first round.

Not saying it will happen
With Raheem Morris recent comments about wanting size on the line Dunlap is not out of question.

just cuz Dunlap is big...
doesn’t mean he plays big.
All he’s got is 6"6 290lbs who just runs fast.
They had Gaines Adams on their team…and Gaines was actually good in college.

I'm not arguing that
I’m just saying the man mentioned size and whether he plays big or not 6’6 290 is good size.

Iupati's stock is rising fast
I wouldnt be surprised to see him go that High, Ive been saying it for Months. Joseph was the last G as good as Iupati to come out and he went around that same time.
That Falcons Pick Is Looking Like It Might Be Higher Then We Thought.
I have Ronnie Brown, Micheal Turner, and Dwayne Bowe all on my fantasy team.

I don't even think he's the #1 guard in the draft....
why would he go so high?
Plus, Joseph played for Oklahoma. Little different ….
And he went #23, not #12. Also, little different.

Why would the Vikings take a defensive end? Jared Allen is under a long contract and they will most likely resign Ray Edwards who is having a great season and is only 24 years old.

True
but the vikings also have brian robison who could be a starting DE with a lot of other teams. I think a DT would be a better fit for the vikings as a replacement to an aging pat williams

I agree on the DT part
tho, I guess since your a Vikings fan you see a lot more out of Robison. I do doubt that he could start tho, cuz if he did you’d need an upgrade.
I dunno who tho since to replace Pat, you’d want a larger fat to replace him.

cuz its a first round mock.
you take a player last year…why would you spend a 1st rounder on another one? If they like Chase Coffman, TE’s not a first round need.
Plenty of all-around TE’s in the draft for the Bengals if they really need one, so later on can happen.
They could use a WR couldn’t they? Arrelious Benn? Golden Tate?

I'm not talking about just the Bengals
So just don’t draft one in round 1? So it’s not ok to draft a position in back to back years yet you can draft the same position twice in same draft? Last year the Lions drafted two TE’s. Was Pettigrew not enough? Titans took two WR’s. Raiders took two as well. So do it the same year just not the next?
So we need to scratch off Ndamukong Suh to the Bucs because they drafted Roy Miller last year? No WR for the Rams because they drafted Brooks Foster and forget QB as well they took the great Keith Null. No QB to Seattle they took Mike Teel. No DE to Oakland they took 3 last year. No safety or LB to the Saints they took Chip Vaughn and Stanley Arnoux. No corner to Minnesota they took Asher Allen. No WR to Miami they took Hartline and Patrick Turner. No DT to the Colts they took Terrance Taylor and Fili Moala. No corner or safety to Houston they took Glover Quin, Brice McClain, and Troy Nolan. No tackle for Detroit they took Lydon Murtha, and no Suh either they took Sammie Lee Hill. No tackle to Green Bay they took Jamon Meredith and no LB either they took Matthews and Brad Jones. No corner or safety for the Broncos they took Alphonso Smith, Darcel McBath, and David Bruton. No WR to Dallas they took Manuel Johnson. No WR to Cleveland they took Massaquoi and Robiskie. No WR for Chicago they drafted Johnny Knox, Juoquin Iglesias, and Derek Kinder. Atlanta took a DE,DT,OLB,CB,S last year so they can’t go that way in round 1.
SO the only positions Cincy can go for in round 1 is QB, G, DT, OLB, S, and Kicker because they drafted the other positions last year.
With the 1st pick the Rams have to decide between TE, G, C, DE, OLB, S, K, P. Wow Carlos Dunlap just might go #1 overall.
It makes no sense to me. Make your team better whether you took that position last year or not.

that's not what I'm saying....
I’M JUST TALKING…about the Bengals and the TE they took last year.
TE, is not important enough to double up not only when you made a good pick the year before but not to draft in the first round when you got other needs.
What YOU are saying makes no sense…cuz I said nothing like that.
Seems they could use a WR, maybe a ‘lightening’ type RB, just another weapon. They have a few weapons at TE including Chase Coffman.
Plus…..there’s other TE’s out there for round 2.
"It ain't over till its over"---

The Bengals took Michael Johnson 28 spots higher than Coffman and yet some still say the Bengals can go DE. What about two TE sets? Get as much assets on offense as you can? Personnaly I don’t have Gresham going to the Bengals in my mocks but it’s not because they drafted Coffman last year.
you take a player last year…why would you spend a 1st rounder on another one?
I would love to do a mock draft with that concept in mind.
My original comment wasn’t meant to be just at the Bengals it’s for those who say the 49ers don’t need a QB they drafted Nate Davis last year and such. I just don’t buy into the “we won’t draft that guy we drafted one last year”. Or when a fan says there team doesn’t need a RB because they have a guy on the freaking practice squad who was awesome in freaking preseason.

Of course there are some exeptions, like if a QB is taken on day 1 (unless you’ areMiami, then you just draft a QB in the 2nd every year) or other situations like that
by TheRealSlimShady on Nov 19, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
certain positions....
like TE.. you don’t need to double up on. Especially…IF THE TEAM LIKES WHO THEY DRAFTED!
If you got a position solved..WHY would you spend first round pick on it? If you need a TE for your 2 TE sets…WHY would you go to the first round?
ESPECIALLY…since when many teams decide to run out of 2 TE sets, they go can go with a backup OT anyway….
Its a positional type thing, but you’re making it an absolutism and saying it applies to every pick and every team…when it does not.
If you draft a player, and you get a NFL caliber player, and a good player out of a pick…that means you don’t need to spend a first rounder on that same position…especially if you just might have other needs.
You say DE for the Bengals…well, that’s a COMPLETELY different issue. You can rotate DE’s, moreso than you rotate your TE’s. You always wanna keep your DE’s fresh…you can never have too many pass rushers.
Can you never have too many TE’s????/ Never heard that pile a crap before.
Would Gresham make a bit of sense for the Bengals? Maybe…probably…but I’m sure they’d rather address other positions of need than TE.
…if you want a backup TE, there’s always plenty on the scrap heap in FA anyway….

THIS
I just don’t buy into the "we won’t draft that guy we drafted one last year"
I agree with that…but its not an “always” type thing. If someone says the Niners drafted nate Davis so they won’t draft a QB…well, we have a word for that person…its “idiot”.
You DO draft the same position again when you still have a hole there, even if you drafted it the past year…cuz obviously the past one has failed or hasn’t shown anything.
But if you solved the position for the time being…there’s 21 other positions to look at in the first round.
PLUS!!! That’s why they make 7 rounds.

The same TE that hasn't even played one regular season snap.
While I would like to see what Coffman can do at the pro level, if he can’t block or play special teams, then he’s a liability especially since we’re making a playoff run with possibly the most complete team we’ve had in 20 years.

At least this year.
And Gresham is essentially the same type of TE as Coffman. An oversized WR who lines up at TE in a spread.

Seriously?
Aren’t your 2 DE’s right now about 300lbs?
294 is not small. Plus if he’s strong enough, he’d probably be quicker. Also his height would give him a leverage advantage.
I don’t get why people are always so concerned with height and weight in a 3-4.
Yea, a 275lbs guy might be bad for NT, but if the DE’s are 285+ and the NT is 310+, as long as they’re any good it doesn’t matter.

I think you blew it by not putting Golden Tate in your first round. He has probably out preformed everyone else in college football this year. When he lost teammate Michael Floyd for 6 weeks he became a monster and unstoppable. Hands of steel. IMO best all around player in the draft

How long will he last though?
I love watching Tate after the catch, because you never know if he’s going to break a tackle or twelve and take it all the way. But if he keeps that, “Nobody can take me down” mentality into the NFL, how many seasons will he last? Two and a half?
by Naptime! on Nov 19, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think so.
He’s a tough dude and like a RB after the catch, RB’s usually try to fight for extra yards.
I’ve said he’s like a young Hines Ward cuz he just seems to like to knock the snot out of people.
I don’t know about best all-around player, but the farther he falls in the draft, the more some team is going to get a steal.
‘Clutch’ is not something you see that much in a WR or a KR when they are getting YAC. Tate most definitely is clutch.
My team doesn’t need a WR at all, but I’d actually have no problem at all if they grabbed Tate in round one, he’s just the type of player you want on your team.

I really appreciate everyone’s feedback, both positive and negative, because most have gone out of their way to explain themselves. A few thoughts, going down in order of the draft
- The Browns are probably more likely to take a QB or a Defensive player than a WR with issues. (QB only if Quinn completely bombs for the rest of the year of course)
- As was said already, I don’t see Dunlap going in the top 10, much less the top 5. There’s better options for Tampa, especially at DB.
- I still don’t understand people’s propensity to give the Bills a DT. That’s not why the running game is so bad in Buffalo, their biggest defensive hole is at LB, not DT. They need a T and QB before they get a DT. I know nobody watches or cares about the Bills, but it’s getting ridiculous.
- The Broncos have a pretty good Line already, and guard isn’t their biggest issue.
- McCoy went a bit too high, I think scouts will look at him and realize he has less NFL potential than he probably should.
- Am I seeing things or is Locker not even on that draft board? :/
Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.
