Mike Williams Quits the Team
Wide receiver Mike Williams has left the Syracuse footbal team, as announced by head coach Doug Marrone today. Williams was the Orange's best offensive player, despite the lack of play makers on Syracuse's offense. My question for you is this: how will this affect his draft status? You have to assume that he's going to the NFL, it would make little sense for him to transfer to another program given the year he lost to academic troubles.
Extra added by Dan: Williams is a big target with 20 career touchdowns. He clearly has talent, but there are a ton of issues surrounding Williams. Before this, he was suspended for the Akron game for breaking a team rule. He sat out the 2008 season because of academic issues.

Reason unknown as of yet
Academics are probably the likely culprit, that’s the rumor why he was suspended for the Akron game.

BSU
I wanted to move this over to the main part of the site so I cleaned up the first sentence and added a bit. Hope you don’t care.
I think this could hurt Williams’ draft stock pretty significantly. He was likely considered a second-round pick and now I’d say he’s a fourth round player, at best.

Hurts
Not good to show that you quit on your team. Not good at all.

It'll hurt his stock most definitely
Some teams will alot of wariness towards character issues would pass him, and go somehwere else because of this, amongst other issues.

From Joe Schad’s Twitter Account
Mike Williams had a latenight vehicle incident after the last gm that was going to lead to another suspension
He sounds like another Charles Rodgers.

What is it with
big, slow overweight college WR/OT named Mike Williams?
Kidding on the slow and overweight thing…tho by the time the draft rolls around..he probably will be that.
I think he’s got more talent than the former Lion and the other 400lbs one on the DeadSkins…yet, he’s destined to be crap and probably will never play a down.
I can’t even see him being drafted. I saw plenty of WR who had lots of talent get drafted in the 5th and 6th rounds the past couple years…and Mike Williams isn’t even them.

Hard to say how this impacts him going forward.
Obviously, it doesn’t help. So the real question is how much does it hurt. If his problems were academic in nature he may have been looking at a longer-than-one-game suspension. If that’s the case, I suspect that quitting the team will be one data point with no greater weight (and probably less weight) than his on-field performance and upcoming combine/workouts.
If this is about some other issue then it gets more complicated. But I think that more often than not the “team rules” violations we hear so much about are related to academics. Many teams have point systems for class attendance and grades. If you accumulate so many demerits it results in missed practice time, then missed playing time, then suspensions.

I dont think he will get drafted because teams look at players like this as poison

It hurts
But I’d take a late round (6th or 7th) flier on him. Any big target w/ 20 touchdowns in Syracuse’s offense these last few years is worth bringing to training camp to see if there is anything there.
