Rock out with your mock draft out: Draft Countdown

Since it's been nearly a month since last doing this, why not talk about a mock draft on a Friday night?

Now, if you think I've been writing this during a Friday evening, you'd be wrong. But that's the beauty of future posting!

Anyway, this time we're taking a look at the latest mock draft from Scott Wright of Draft Countdown. Wright boasts that this mock has more than 7,000 words of analysis. So, there's that.

This is going to be an infrequent feature here at Mocking the Draft. The plan is to showcase some mock drafts from sites of name, and pull no punches. Instead of running down the first few picks opining on them, I'll talk about some of the surprising choices.

The first surprise is Cleveland taking Jake Locker at second overall. At this point, the Browns are such a mess it seems a little tough to expect them to not take a player who could start immediately in the NFL. While Locker is loaded with as much talent as anyone in the nation, he seems like a player who might have to sit and learn a year.

As per usual, Wright does an overall nice job with this mock. He covers all his bases in his descriptions and his layout is always clean. But back to the issues.

If someone can convince me that Oklahoma left tackle Trent Williams is deserving of a top 15 pick based on this season, please do. And while C.J. Spiller is a nice running back, I don't think he's a workhorse worth the 12th pick overall, which Wright does giving him to the Seahawks.

Tim Tebow to the Jaguars ... moving on.

It's a little surprising to see Wright putting Corey Wootton in the first round. Last year Wootton was one of my favorite players in the nation. This year he's clearly not as good after suffering a devastating knee injury. And I still don't get the Patrick Robinson as first-round talent argument. Someone please make it.

Like I said, though, this is a well-thought-out mock draft. That's something you can expect from Wright.

I’m OK with where Locker was selected. Cleveland needs a franchise QB, and Locker is the best one available IMO.

I don’t see Clausen lasting that long.

I have Trent Williams at around 15th overall talent available. I see Bulaga going ahead of him, though. Williams ends up at RT though, so he gets drafted in a similar range to Jeff Otah, IMO.

I think Spiller’s talent warrants a grade around that pick, but there’s no way he goes that high. I see Spiller being a draft day drop, for the reason that you stated.

I think Jacksonville is going to go another direction with their 1st rounder, and then trade 2010 and 2011 picks to get back into the last third of the third round for Tebow. I don’t agree with the marketing angle for a player that’s not going to see the field for at least a year.

No way Dwyer or Bulaga last that long.

I like Wootton as a 30 front 5DE. His knee injury is problematic. I’ve seen him three times this year and he’s just not very explosive. I think he’s 2nd rounder who adds weight and becomes a very good NFL player.

Robinson is a pure cover corner, and he’s very good at it. I have him graded at the tail end of the first round. He’s not for everyone (his run suport and zone coverage skills don’t exist) but he has value to a team that runs a lot of man- he’s really fluid in man coverage and could be a shutdown type at the next level.

BTW, I’ve got work on Saturday and won’t be able to watch much of anything except the late game.

why would we trade back into the third

when we could get him at our natural 3rd round spot or hope to get him in the 4th. We will most likely trade back or stay more than trade up in any case.

Cards ain't going TE in the 1st

LB and OL are much, MUCH bigger needs.

It's just an easy way for him

To get a high ranked TE into the first round and not get too much second guessing IMO. Same with the Tebow pick.

agreed

With Spikes still on the board, I think the Cards would forgo a tight end in the first.

Most people forget that we have Stephen Spach

His career numbers aren’t all that great, but he was big in the playoffs for us. He has been injured this year with his ankle, but before TE is a draft need we need to see how he does in the second half of the season.

Although I wouldn't mind seeing McClain in orange and blue, Wright's logic disappoints me.

In any case, I’d rather see the Broncos trade out of the first for a couple 2’s.

Why Tim Tebow

I just don’t get it.

I've met him

Great guy. Not saying I wouldn’t have a beer or go fishing with him, but I’m not sure about his game. We need so much help on defense that I don’t see spending a first on a guy you are going to have to develop.

I've looked at Tebow the past two weeks...

… and his issues are completely correctable. I wouldn’t take him on as a high first rounder (as in this mock) but I’d take him 20 overall or lower.

3 things have to happen for a project QB to succeed in the NFL (and Tebow is definitely a project)

1: The QB in question has to have the physical and mental ability to play QB in the NFL.

2: The team that drafts the project QB has to remain stable for 2-3 years while developing the QB.

3: The project QB has to realize that he’s a project and truly desire to be great, leading to him putting in the required work.

A great example of this is Donovan McNabb. He had all the traits of a winning QB coming out of Syracuse. He’s only had one system and one coach, which was particularly important during his developmental years. And he worked to transition his skills from freeze-option QB to NFL passer.

Tebow controls #1 and #3 and they are not in doubt. #2 is the issue.

#2

Is what I’m afraid of.

Exactly

It’s the only thing that Tebow can’t control.

I think its got a lot to do

with mock draft site’s just not sure about who to put up there, especially with so many underclassman.

I usually go by Walterfootball.com, and they have Tebow going #9…to the Redskins. They say that numerous coaches say he’ll be a very good QB, one of them being potential Redskins coach Jon Gruden.

We all don’t know about Tebow. His throws seem like he’s throwing with the wrong arm, yet…they get there (and pretty accurately too…). I sure as hell wouldn’t take him where many of these mock drafts say, but who knows?

If Jamarcus Russel can complete a pass every now and then, I think Tebow can do that. He has a brain and worth ethic..and has played QB for a while…so I wouldn’t say he’s a flop already, even for a 1st rounder.

You just don’t know. Is Spiller a workhorse? Probably not, but who is? YOu got guys like Steve Slaton who are doing just fine, and Spiller is just like Slaton in college. Trent Williams? Well yea, he’s getting exposed, yet since its all a projection, if he benches a lot and shows all that crap in those offseason workouts..he could go top 15.

Corey Wooten? He’s got top 15 talent, yet is some team gonna take that risk? If his injury checks out OK, I’m sure a team in the first round would snatch him. 6"7 270 DE’s don’t grow on trees.

Did You Say

Steve Slaton is doing fine?

For a third round pick, yes, he is doing fine

Isn't He Like

Leading the NFL in fumbles, when guys such as Pierre Thomas only has one. And didn’t he lose his job to a guy who is like Pierre Thomas, undrafted?

That would be Reggie Bush.

and you’d be thinking about the Saints.

And yea, Slaton seems to have lost his job to Ryan Moats, but that doesn’t take away from his 1200+yd and 9 TD season last year, his rookie year.

And yea, that will make you lose your job having 7 fumbles halfway through the season. I don’t think that was a problem with Slaton in college and it wasn’t a problem last season when he had 3 fumbles out of 268 carries.

I didn’t check the Texans stats for this season when I said he’s doing “fine”, but I know he had a great rookie year.

Fumblitis is something that’s correctable..and I was comparing the college career and similar running styles these 2 share. That is all.

Defense takes the cake for our 1st round pick.
