5 Round 2010 Mock Draft
Well, this is a labor of love and a lot of work if ever there was one. Feel free to excoriate me and tell me how stupid I am in the comments section. Obviously neither I nor anyone else has much information on who or how many underclassmen will declare. This will receiver a major overhaul after the Senior Bowl as some declare, others stay, unexpected stars emerge and old favorites fade.
FIRST ROUND
1. Cleveland Browns - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
I've had people tell me that this won't be Clausen because the Browns will fear taking another Notre Dame QB in round 1. This, of course, makes zero sense. Whether it's Mangini wanting the proverbial "his guy" or a new coach who'll be after the same thing, Clausen with his experience in a pro style offense is the best of this year's bunch.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Go ahead and chisel this in stone because if Suh is on the board when the Bucs draft (and he almost certainly will be), they are taking him.
3. St. Louis Rams - Jake Locker, QB, Washington
I recently read that Steve Sarkisian made the pitch to Locker to stay another year. While it's true his game could benefit from another season, it's also true that he could potentially be passing up on millions of dollars if he stays because of the very real possibility of a rookie salary cap. We'll see what happens, but for now I'm keeping Locker to the Rams, who desperately need him.
4. Detroit Lions - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
Now that Matthew Stafford has not only been knocked around like a pinata, but injured, Detroit will see the need to protect him. I'll give their new, non-Millen regime the benefit of the doubt that they'll do the right thing.
5. Kansas City Chiefs - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Speaking of things getting knocked around, witness Matt Cassell, the Human Pinball. With Okung gone, Bulaga is the ticket here. Eric Berry is also a very, very real possibility.
6. Washington Redskins - Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
Much like Al Davis, Dan Snyder falls in love with big names with big physical gifts. Mallett has caught everyone's attention this year and with the Jason Campbell experiment likely winding down, it doesn't take a great leap to imagine Snyder drooling over the big, cannon armed Mallett. Mallett is another guy who should probably stay 1 more year in college, but will likely come out for the big bucks. Can't blame him
7. Oakland Raiders - Joe Haden, CB, Florida
The Raiders have the best cover corner in the league. They also have no one behind him. Chris Johnson has spent this season doing an effective impersonation of burnt toast and Stanford Routt is just horrible. Now think about Al and his first round defensive backs. Now consider that Haden can run a 40 time in the low 4.4's without much difficulty. You can write this in as a virtual lock if Haden can run a sub 4.4 at the Combine. Fortunately for Al, Haden has real football talent to go along with his track skills.
8. Buffalo Bills - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
Zero run defense. Gerald McCoy is a good run stopper. Mark it.
9. San Francisco 49ers - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
THE steal of the draft, no question, since Berry is a top 3 talent. 49ers should be thankful for other teams' needs and retardation.
10. Denver Broncos - Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State
I know this is way high for Cameron Heyward, but they need a 3-4 end and Heyward is probably the best option. Plus, based on Denver's goofy draft last year, it's pretty clear that we can expect the unexpected from Josh McDaniels
11. Seattle Seahawks - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
Seattle is a mess at the tackle position right now and there's really no QB or RB they can justify taking at this spot.
12. New York Jets - Damian Williams, WR, USC
The Jets have some holes on defense to fill, but I can't see them passing up the opportunity to give their young franchise QB a chance to throw to a guy he knows and trusts.
13. San Francisco 49ers - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Now that Alex Smith is at last emerging, the Niners have got to keep him protected so his confidence isn't shattered again.
14. Houston Texans - Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan
I'm really not fond of the Texans secondary. Warren can help in a big way, though a safety like Taylor Mays wouldn't go amiss here either.
15. Tennessee Titans - Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia
Dowling can play corner or safety. Depth and versatility are never bad things.
16. Miami Dolphins - Dan Williams, NT, Tennessee
The Fins need a NT and Williams has had an absolutely brilliant season. Parcells would probably shy away from someone with Cody's issues anyway.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
If you're into mock drafts, you're already well aware of the logic at work here.
18. Atlanta Falcons - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Among other problems, the Falcons have a pathetic pass rush. Morgan can fix that in a big way.
19. Baltimore Ravens - Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU
Lots of little holes in the Ravens roster, but Joe Flacco needs targets most of all. Always have to put your young franchise QB first.
20. Green Bay Packers - Charles Brown, OT, USC
Green Bay's offensive line has been atrocious this year. This has to be an OT.
21. Pittsburgh Steelers - Taylor Mays, S, USC
If Polamalu's abscence proved anything this year, it's that the Steelers need help at safety. Mays is the biggest athletic freak in the draft, but struggles in pass coverage...not good for a FS. But his talent is too great to ignore and the Steelers need another dominating presence in the defensive backfield if/when Polamalu goes down in 2010. You have to figure Tomlin and LeBeau can coach him up.
22. Dallas Cowboys - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
Flozell Adams is a joke and should be out of football. There's a strong chance this is his last season in Dallas and Jerry Jones like his linemen to be enormous, just like Davis.
23. New York Giants - Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma
The Giants linebackcorps corps is falling apart. Lewis is a great place to start the rebuilding.
24. New England Patriots - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama
They're still so desperate for help at ILB that they went out and signed 40,000 year old Junior Seau...again. McClain and Jerod Mayo will make the most formidable young inside linebacker duo in the league.
25. Philadelphia Eagles - Mike Iupati, G, Idaho
Philly's had some struggles along the whole offensive line this year, but especially at guard. Iupati is one of those rare dominant guards worth of a mid-to-late first round pick.
26. Seattle Seahawks - CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson
Justin Forsett? Julius Jones? What a cruel joke to play on the good people of Seattle. Spiller can do everything.
27. Arizona Cardinals - Jason Fox, OT, Miami
It's shocking how effective Kurt Warner is, given the turnstiles currently occupying the tackle slots in Arizona.
28. Cincinnati Bengals - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
The Bengals need receiving help and they've never shown hesitancy on taking a gamble on players who had problems in the past. They're like the Statue of Liberty for troubled players: "Give us your fined, your arrested, your rulebreaking masses yearning to make bank"
29. San Diego Chargers - Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama
A gift from the football gods for the Bolts--A true, elite 3-4 NT falls to 29. AJ Smith will pounce.
30. Minnesota Vikings - Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
EJ Henderson's ugly, very serious injury suddenly made ILB depth a top priority on a team with not many other holes. Spikes fills the bill.
31. Indianapolis Colts - Jerry Hughes, OLB, TCU
They need an upgrade at SLB and Hughes fits the Colts mold: fierce competitor on the field, solid citizen off it.
32. New Orleans Saints - Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State
Stick this guy next to Sedrick Ellis and the Saints will have a truly terrifying front four
SECOND ROUND
33. Cleveland Browns - Jahvid Best, RB, California
The Browns are in desperate need of real playmakers on offense, especially in the backfield
34. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Greg Hardy, DE, Mississippi
Having gotten Suh to tend to the interior, the Bucs grab Greg Hardy to upgrade the pass rush off the edge.
35. St. Louis Rams - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Having got their QB of the future, the Rams need some weapons for him to throw to. Gresham's injury causes him to fall out of the first round, but he's too good and too valuable to make it past St. Louis
36. Detroit Lions - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
Their pass defense is just awful. They have got to do something about it.
37. Kansas City Chiefs - Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri
Mike Vrabel isn't getting any younger and Weatherspoon tackles everything in sight.
38. Washington Redskins - Corey Wootton, DE, Northwestern
Philip Daniels will be 37 before the 2010 season. Dan Snyder will drool over Woottons measurables
39. Oakland Raiders - Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
For a man of his gargantuan stature, Carimi is extremely athletic, so he'll be on Al's radar. The Raiders are in desperate need of a big, dominant run blocking right tackle.
40. Buffalo Bills - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
With Trent Edwards looking to be finishing in Buffalo and Ryan Fitzpatrick almost certainly not the answer, the new regime in Buffalo will want their man. Bradford is too talented to fall farther.
41. Carolina Panthers - Colt McCoy, QB, Texas
Jake Delhomme is a liability and Matt Moore hasn't exactly been tearing up the field.
42. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Damae
Josh Freeman needs someone to throw to and I truly believe Tate is going to be awesome.
43. Seattle Seahawks - Tony Pike, QB, Cincinnati
Hasselbeck isn't quite done yet, but he's getting there. Pike is the kind of QB that'll need to sit for a year anyway to adapt to the NFL
44. New York Jets - Syd'Quan Thompson, CB, California
The Jets are in desperate need of someone reliable across from Darrelle Revis.
45. San Francisco 49ers - Nate Allen, S, South Florida
The whole 49ers secondary could use an overhaul, really.
46. Houston Texans - Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech
Steve Slaton has been inconsistent and was just placed on injured reserve for the year. The Texans have no real other viable options, so they must address that need here.
47. New England Patriots - Eric Norwood, OLB, South Carolina
Everyone else in the universe is mocking a rush linebacker to the Patriots, and with good reason. They need one.
48. Miami Dolphins - Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois
They have got to get someone for Chad Henne to throw to. Benn's upside is tremendous and if he pans out, he'll be great value halfway through round 2.
49. New England Patriots - Allen Bailey, DT/DE, Miami
Ty Warren and Jarvis Green haven't exactly set the world on fire this year.
50. Kansas City Chiefs - Mike Johnson, G, Alabama
How old is Brian Waters anyway? Pretty damn. Johnson is a great guard.
51. Baltimore Ravens - Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
Baltimore's CB play has been really inconsistent this year.
52. Green Bay Packers - Perrish Cox, CB, Oklahoma State
Charles Woodson is having an outstanding season, but still isn't getting any younger.
53. Pittsburgh Steelers - Daryl Washington, ILB, TCU
An excellent potential replacement for James Farrior as he approaches the end of his road.
54. Dallas Cowboys - Morgan Burnett, S, Georgia Tech
The safety position could use some tweaking in Big D.
55. New York Giants - Sean Lee, ILB, Penn State
The combination of Clint Sintim, Sean Lee and Travis Lewis could be very, very fearsome once they gel.
56. New England Patriots - Jon Asomoah, G, Illinois
Lots of expiring contracts along the offensive line and Brady must be protected at all costs.
57. Philadelphia Eagles - Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
The Eagles could use someone better across from Trent Cole.
58. Denver Broncos - Matt Tennant, C, Boston College
Casey Wiegmann is approaching 40.
59. Arizona Cardinals - Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M
The Cardinals could use a replacement for the aging Chike Okeafor.
60. Cincinnati Bengals - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
The Bengals could use both secondary depth and a better return man. Here you go.
61. San Diego Chargers - Terrance Toliver, WR, LSU
With all those expiring receiever contracts, you have to figure the Chargers will be looking for one in the draft. Toliver has the kind of big body (6'4") the Chargers want in their receivers.
62. Minnesota Vikings - Arthur Jones, DT, Syracuse
Jones will be an excellent choice to fill the chinks in the aging Williams Wall. He's a first round talent who only falls because of injury.
63. Indianapolis Colts - Tyson Alualu, DT, California
Another player in the traditional Indy mode, Alualu may the guy who at last solves the problems in the center of their defensive line.
64. New Orleans Saints - Ricky Sapp, OLB, Clemson
Everyone in the world appears to be mocking a linebacker the Saints at some point in the first 3 rounds, so who am I to argue?
THIRD ROUND
65. Cleveland Browns - Trevard Lindley, CB, Kentucky
The Browns corner depth is just horrible
66. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jerome Murphy, CB, South Florida
The Bucs have got to find a replacement for Ronde Barber soon
67. St. Louis Rams - Everson Griffen, DE, USC
Formerly dominant pass rusher Leonard Little is getting long in the tooth and Griffen could be a fine replacement.
68. Detroit Lions - Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford
Kevin Smith needs help. The Lions have to get a real running game to take pressure off Matthew Stafford.
69. Kansas City Chiefs - Mardy Gilyard, WR, Cincinnati
The KC wide receiver corps has been a patchwork and improvised affair all year long.
70. Oakland Raiders - D'Anthony Smith, DT, Louisiana Tech
Let's run through the checklist. Position of need? Check. Runs a sub 5 second 40 at over 300 pounds? Check. Filled with "upside" he may or may not ever fulfill? Check. Welcome to Oakland, D'Anthony.
71. Buffalo Bills - Jeremy Williams, WR, Tulane
Their new QB is going to need more reliable people to throw to.
72. Carolina Panthers - Danario Alexander, WR, Missouri
Wide receivers flying off the board. In Carolina's case, it's necessary, since other than Steve Smith their options are a 5,000 year old Mushin Muhammed and an underperforming Dwayne Jarrett.
73. Chicago Bears - Joseph Barksdale, OT, LSU
Welcome to the draft, Chicago. You have a lot of needs. None are greater, however, than tackle because Orlando Pace can't block anybody anymore.
74. Philadelphia Eagles - Anthony Dixon, RB, Mississippi State
With Brian Westbrook ever more injury prone and one more concussion likely to end his career, the Eagles are going to need insurance at running back.
75. Cleveland Browns - Ciron Black, OT, LSU
The Browns could sure use a big, mean runblocking right tackle to bookend Joe Thomas.
76. San Francisco 49ers - Mitch Petrus, G, Arkansas
The 49ers guards have been in and out of Mike Singletary's doghouse all season.
77. Houston Texans - Colin Peek, TE, Alabama
A great blocker and a great weapon for Matt Schaub. He can be the Texans' Jason Witten.
78. Tennessee Titans - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida
Kyle Vandenbosch's contract is up at the end of the year and who knows if he's coming back.
79. Miami Dolphins - Sergio Kindle, OLB, Texas
The Dolphins are going to need at least one rush linebacker now that Jason Taylor and Joey Porter aren't spring chickens anymore.
80. Jacksonville Jaguars - Roddrick Muckleroy, OLB, Texas
Their linebacking group is seriously underwhelming and they have got to get more pressure on the opposing QB.
81. Atlanta Falcons - TJ Ward, S, Oregon
The whole Atlanta secondary could use overhauling.
82. Baltimore Ravens - Micah Johnson, ILB, Kentucky
With Ray Lewis beginning to wind down, it's never too early for Baltimore to start thinking ILB depth.
83. Green Bay Packers - O'Brien Schofield, OLB, Wisconsin
With Aaron Kampmann likely headed for greener pastures where he can put his hand back in the dirt, Green Bay will be searching for a natural rush linebacker.
84. Pittsburgh Steelers - Ekom Udofia, DT, Stanford
It might be time for Pittsburgh to begin thinking about grooming Casey Hampton's eventual successor.
85. Dallas Cowboys - Pat Angerer, ILB, Iowa
Keith Brooking will turn 35 midway through next season, so it might be time to start getting some ILB depth.
86. New York Giants - Mike Neal, DT, Purdue
The Giants' DTs have been very disappointing this season
87. Oakland Raiders - Brandon Carter, G, Texas Tech
Cooper Carlisle has shown signs of fading dramatically this year. More to the point, have you seen Brandon Carter? He was put on earth to play for the Oakland Raiders.
88. Philadelphia Eagles - Perry Riley, OLB, LSU
The Eagles were so lacking in linebackers that they signed old and busted Jeremiah Trotter. Riley will be a solid addition on the outside.
89. Denver Broncos - Jordan Shipley, WR, Texas
I think the Broncos need more receiving depth, especially with Brandon Stokely turning 34 before the season starts.
90. Arizona Cardinals - Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
Arizona doesn't have much corner depth behind Rodgers-Cromartie and McFadden.
91. Cincinnati Bengals - John Jerry, G, Mississippi
Their lack of depth at guard is worrisome
92. San Diego Chargers - Zane Beadles, OT, Utah
The Chargers have been killed with injuries along their offensive line this year and the backups haven't really played to a high level.
93. Minnesota Vikings - Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers
The Vikings secondary has looked shaky at times this year, especially when Winfield has been out.
94. Indianapolis Colts - Adam Ulatoski, OT, Texas
Protecting the best QB in the league is always a good idea. Selvish Capers will merit a look here as well.
95. New Orleans Saints - Dexter McCluster, WR, Mississippi
Call me crazy, but I think Sean Payton and Drew Brees could come up with all sorts of imaginative, interesting ways to use this explosive, multi-talented player out of Ole Miss. Plus he costs a hell of a lot less than Reggie Bush who I believe is due 8 million this off-season if retained
FOURTH ROUND
96. Cleveland Browns - Jermaine Cunningham, OLB, Florida
The Browns need an upgrade across the way from Kamerion Wimbley
97. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Dorin Dickerson, FB, Pittsburgh
The Bucs are so thin at FB they've pressed natural running back Earnest Graham into service this season. Dickerson is good at catching passes out of the backfield.
98. St Louis Rams - Dezmon Briscoe, WR, Kansas
The depth at WR is just ugly for the Rams
99. Detroit Lions - Jeremy Beal, DE, Oklahoma
Beal is a solid all around DE who can help the Lions get to the opposing QB.
100. Kansas City Chiefs - Kam Chancellor, S, Virginia Tech
The safety position has been a problem for the Chiefs all year
101. Washington Redskins - Selvish Capers, OT, West Virginia
The 'Skins line has been decimated by injuries
102. Oakland Raiders - Kenny Alfred, C, Washington State
The center position has been a scene of very inconsistent play in Oakland this year. Samson Satele has not lived up to expectations
103. Buffalo Bills - Anthony McCoy, TE, USC
A nice weapon for any young QB to have is the do-it-all TE. McCoy fits that bill.
104. Carolina Panthers - Vince Oghobaase, DT, Duke
The Panthers won't have far to seek to get a big presence in the middle of their line
105. Chicago Bears - Naaman Roosevelt, WR, Buffalo
Jay Cutler needs more weapons to work with
106. Seattle Seahawks - Kurt Coleman, S, Ohio State
Seattle could use a better safety to pair with Jordan Babineaux
107. New York Jets - Torrell Troup, DT, Central Florida
Kris Jenkins' injury exposed just how badly the Jets need a reliable player behind him
108. San Franciso 49ers - Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama
49ers keep working on that secondary
109. Houston Texans - Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
The Texans try to shore up their defensive middle
110. Tennessee Titans - Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota
The Vince Young-to-Kenny Britt connection appears to have real promise, but now that Young has learned to throw, the Titans need to get him more receivers.
110. Miami Dolphins - Jamar Cheney, ILB, Mississippi State
Depth/future replacement for Ayodele and Crowder
111. Jacksonville Jaguars - Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
Someone to pair with MJD
112. Atlanta Falcons - Alterraun Verner, CB, UCLA
Depth/potential starter at a position where the Falcons are thin
113. Baltimore Ravens - Ed Dickson, TE, Oregon
Backup for and eventual successor to Todd Heap
114. Green Bay Packers - Jacoby Ford, WR, Clemson
Small, but very good
115. Pittsburgh Steelers - Montario Hardesty, RB, Tennessee
Rashard Mendenhall has taken over full-time starter duties and I expect Willie Parker to depart to someplace where he can get more playing time. Hardesty will make a nice complement to Mendenhall.
116. Dallas Cowboys - Jay Ross, DT, East Carolina
Ross can backup and fill in nicely at either 3-4 DE or DT, both of which places feature multiple expiring contracts.
117. New York Giants - Stephan Virgil, CB, Virginia Tech
Corner depth is never, ever a bad idea
118. New England Patriots - Marcus Easley, WR, Connecticut
Targets for Tom Brady are always a good thing!
119. Philadelphia Eagles - Blair White, WR, Michigan State
Would make a nice #3 behind Maclin and Jackson
120. Denver Broncos - Dan LeFevour, QB, Central Michigan
Chris Simms is probably not long for Denver and it might be nice to an insurance policy behind Kyle Orton. LeFevour could flourish in a Josh McDaniels style offense
121. Arizona Cardinals - Chris Hall, C, Texas
Arizona's whole line hasn't really played inspired football this year
122. Cincinnati Bengals - Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh
Romeus will be a better player than Geathers or Rucker and who knows if Antwan Odom will ever be the same player after his injury
123. San Diego Chargers - Brandon Deaderick, DE, Alabama
The Chargers were really caught scrambling for solutions at DE earlier this season. Deaderick would be a perfect fit.
124. Minnesota Vikings - Robert Johnson, S, Utah
Whether or not he sold his soul to play the blues, he can play football and help out in Minnesota.
125. Indianapolis Colts - Dennis Pitta, TE, BYU
A backup/insurance policy for Dallas Clark.
126. New Orleans Saints - Myron Lewis, CB, Vanderbilt
New Orleans' secondary has been so hit by injuries that they were signing guys off the street.
FIFTH ROUND
127. Cleveland Browns - Mick Williams, DT, Pittsburgh
I actually envision him as a 3-4 DE in the NFL, which is why I'm mocking him to the Browns.
128. Cleveland Browns - Barry Church, S, Toledo
Gotta keep trying to upgrade that liability of a defensive backfield
129. St. Louis Rams - A.J. Edds, OLB, Iowa
Strong side or weak side, take your pick....they both need upgraded on the Rams.
130. Detroit Lions - Darrell Stuckey, S, Kansas
Could make an effective safety tandem with Louis Delmas
131. Kansas City Chiefs - Reggie Carter, ILB, UCLA
Some stiffening for the interior of KC's linebackers
132. Washington Redskins - Charles Scott, RB, LSU
With Clinton Portis less effective every season, the 'Skins have got to start thinking about other options
133. Oakland Raiders - Akwasi Owusu-Ansah, CB, IUP
The Raiders return game has been absolutely woeful this year. Owusu-Ansah is a dymanic returner and brings depth at the corner position.
134. Buffalo Bills - J.D. Walton, C, Baylor
A much needed boost to the interior of the offensive line
135. Kansas City Chiefs - Kade Weston, DT, Georgia
The Chiefs currently don't have much to plug up the middle of their line.
136. Chicago Bears - Joe Pawelek, ILB, Baylor
Now that Brian Urlacher is having difficultly staying healthy, the Bears need to think about depth behind him
137. Seattle Seahawks - Riley Cooper, WR, Florida
TJ Whosyermomma is still productive by aging. Deon Branch has underwhelmed.
138. Cleveland Browns - Freddie Barnes, WR, Bowling Green
For having a lot of receivers, they sure don't have many receievers, if you see what I mean.
139. San Francisco 49ers - Travis Ivey, DT, Maryland
They have zero depth at the nose.
140. Houston Texans - Taylor Price, WR, Ohio
Houston could always use a good hand behind Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter
141. Tennessee Titans - Dexter Davis, OLB, Arizona State
Keith Bulluck will be 33 in the off-season.
142. Miami Dolphins - Keith Toston, RB, Oklahoma State
With Ronnie Brown injury prone and Ricky Wililams aging, Miami needs other options at running back.
143. Jacksonville Jaguars - Chris McGaha, WR, Arizona State
Whoever will be their QB, they're pretty shallow at WR
144. Atlanta Falcons - Rico McCoy, OLB, Tennessee
Mike Peterson has played well, but was always more of a stop gap than anything.
145. Baltimore Ravens - Sergio Render, G, Virginia Tech
Depth pickup, could push for start time
146. Green Bay Packers - Javarris James, RB, Miami
They needed depth at running back so badly, they actually resigned Ahman "Mr. Glass" Green.
147. Pittsburgh Steelers - Sam Young, OT, Notre Dame
With Willie Colon's contract expiring at the end of the season, the Steelers may be in the market for a big runblocker.
148. Detroit Lions - Lamarr Houston, DT, Texas
Their defensive line interior isn't exactly the stoutest in the world.
149. New York Giants - Zolton Mesko, P, Michigan
Jeff Feagles is approaching his mid-40's and will be a free agent at the end of the season anyway.
150. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Kyle Calloway, OT, Iowa
Both of their starting tackles will be free agents at the end of the season
151. St. Louis Rams - Walter Thurmond, CB, Oregon
Excellent skills, but very injury prone. If he can stay healthy, the Rams will have themselves a steal here.
152. Oakland Raiders - Boris Lee, ILB, Troy
Raiders have expiring linebacker contracts all over the place, and while I think Al will re-sign most of them, taking a guy who tackles as well as Boris Lee in the 5th round is a smart insurance policy. I also thought about FB Rashawn Jackson out of Virginia here because can't stay healthy and Luke Lawton sucks.
153. Arizona Cardinals - Rashawn Jackson, FB, Virginia
Thought about it for the last pick, decided to go with it here since I looked and Dan Kreider's contract is expiring at the end of the season.
154. Cincinnati Bengals - Earl Mitchell, DT, Arizona
Their depth behind Peko and Johnson isn't terribly inspiring.
155. Houston Texans - Vladimir Ducasse, G, Massachusetts
Texans have some expiring contracts at this position and Vladimir Ducasse is such a cool name, I wanted to work him in somehow
156. Minnesota Vikings - Chris Brown, RB, Oklahoma
Chester Taylor has crossed the magical 30 number and has an expiring contract. Brown can be the new man who spells the Purple Jesus.
157. Indianapolis Colts - Myron Rolle, S, Florida State
Bob Sanders insurance.
158. Philadelphia Eagles - Boo Robinson, DT, Wake Forest
Depth/insurance/whatever you wanna call it

WOW.
I mean, if your gonna give the Giants a LB…and Rolando McClain is right there…and they pass?
I’d take a dump and send it to Jerry Reese if he did. McClain is a top 10 talent……
Tho I disagree on the LB unit falling apart. Jon Goff played very well in his first start of the year against the Pies, and was a big reason why the Cowboys couldn’t run for squat that game. Clint Sintim and Boley are getting better as they get more playing time and less injured. Bryan Kehl and Chase Blackburn back up.
…actually, the only reason the Giants will take a LB in round one should be if Rolando McClain drops to their pick (which he shouldn’t…)
Which is also why I don’t like the Sean Lee in round 2, the Giants don’t need LB’s and even less so as Goff and Sintim developl.
CJ Spiller would be nice. Morgan Burnett, Jared Odrick…also nice.
But sure as hell the Giants don’t need 2 LB’s.

Love posting here
Because I don’t have the insight on other teams that the fans that post here do. This feedback helps me refine further iterations….so i will definitely remember about the two linebackers thing once it’s time to revise. Thanks!

Colts picks...
I want to say it before Shake N Bake does – OLB isn’t a priority in Indy’s defensive system. With Coyer as our new DC, the defensive philosophy has changed somewhat (still a Tampa 2) in that LBs are sent to blitz more often, but I don’t see that changing how the Colts value OLBs. They want to be able to plug in (cheap) speedy guys and right now Session is tearing it up as a weakside LB and Hagler (injured) and Wheeler have both been serviceable on the strong side. And Keiaho has some experience at OLB as well. Add to that the fact that Polian hasn’t drafted a LB before the 3rd since 03 – I’m not sure on that stat, but Shake will fix it.
You pretty much covered all of the areas of need w/your other picks, so you did your homework, I just think the order would be switched around somewhat. One thing I did notice though, is that Brian Price isn’t on your mock. A lot of people are falling in love w/him right now and I know there’d be 31 pissed off owners if the Colts could get him. Is he not a senior?
All that being said, Polian is about as unpredictable as Al Davis, except that his players go to the Pro Bowl. So nobody has any real clue who he’ll take and mostly it will depend on whether or not Brackett (MLB) and/or Bethea (FS) are resigned in the offseason.

Thanks
Brian Price is a junior and I swear I read something about him seriously contemplating returning for his senior season. If decides to declare, you’ll see him rocket into the first round. Ditto for Earl Thomas, the safety from Texas
Like I said, it’s the little things the fans know about the organization’s draft habits that I love to pick up on. Like Polian using the “plug and play” guys at OLB.

it's 2001
the year before they brought in Dungy and installed the Tampa-2.
adding to the OLB stuff, both Hagler (started this year until a season ending injury) and Keiaho (backup MLB with starting OLB experience) were FAs last year and drew ZERO interest from other teams. The T-2 is out of fashion. No other team wants the kind of guys that are just solid in Indy’s system.
The DT rotation of Mookie, Muir, Foster and Fili has looked pretty good, I wouldn’t rule out DT if there’s value on the board, but I don’t expect a DT early.

They went LB 1st and 2nd round that year and haven’t taken a LB above the later 3rd since.

They’d be fools to pass on Suh.
Clausen doesn’t make sense not cuz he’s from Notre Dame and they’d be skeptical, that should have nothing to do with it.
Its cuz Brady Quinn, now that they’re actually giving him some time to play football, is not all that bad and should get better.
Berry is a good choice…but he is not going to make an impact like Big Suh.
Every team that passes on Big Suh deserves to fire every single person involved.
Doesn’t matter if you need a QB. Suh is out of this world good.

And I disagree about Berry, other than Suh, he’s the best defensive prospect in this draft and the only other guy who will have as big an immediate impact on that side of the ball.

one of the main reasons why Quinn wasn’t starting earlier was cuz of money…as in his playing time bonuses.
You think they’re gonna draft a QB #1 overall?
Quinn costs half as much as Clausen would…and I kinda have a hard time believing that as a prospect Clausen is that much better than Quinn…if at all.
Might as well just go with Quinn, give the guy a chance and build around him.

He DID get beat out early in camp by Anderson, but once Anderson started to be putrid, there was no reason to not start Quinn. It was pretty much putting 2 and 2 together cuz Quinn had playing bonuses this year..they he just so happened to start playing once it was generally impossible for him to reach them.

He played poorly and was benched for DA who played even worse but won a game. ( 2-17 23 yards!) rather than go back to the better playing Quinn They stayed with Da to keep the money that Quinn would gain for playing over 70% of the snaps this season.

I think what the Browns should do is add a vet QB and give Quinn a proper try for another year. Then pick Suh (while trading Corey Williams to a 4-3 team) place Suh next to Shaun Rodgers (man that would be a D-line!) then fill up on CBs (in FA and the draft) then go get Quinn as many weapons as possible to give him a real good shot at succeding.

Suh doesn't really fit in the 3-4
Well, let me take that back: He’s so dominating you could just put Suh out there on defense to play all 11 positions at once and you’d still b ein the top 10 in total team “D”. But while he does have the size and skillset to play a 3-4 end, he’s a much more natural and absolutely phenomenal 4-3 UT.

don’t even joke like that, Suh would bring something to the 3-4 end position a lot of guys don’t …an impact.
Richard Seymour probably has made the biggest impact over the years as a 3-4 DE…and I think Suh is much more athletic than him.
Suh should be the #1 pick regardless. The first team to pass on him, should fire their entire scouting department and staff.

I don’t know what type of system the Browns 3-4 is, If it is more Belichick style Suh is a great pick, if it is a Steelers style 3-4 it would be a waste and Berry would be the better pick.
Belichick puts a lot on his ends, the Steelers plug them into a gap and have them push really hard. That’s exaggerating but not very much. Suh would definitely work as an Under Tackle, where he wouldn’t have the responsibilities to read defense that a 3-4 end has, but I’d almost compare him to Warren Sapp, who I think could have been the greatest 3-4 end of all time.
I don’t know which system the Browns run, and how much responsibility they put on their ends, but Suh would have to be a very aware and intelligent player to really excel as a 3-4 end, if he’s better off just using his skills to get into the backfield and kill everything that moves, he’s a better fit for a 4-3 team.
But then I’d draft him and play him at TE if I had to, QB’s may get everyone all excited, but not nearly like a monster on the D-line does. I think Suh goes #1, especially if he looks good in his underwear, which is somehow a big deal. If he doesn’t he could slip all the way to #3, maybe.

quinn hasn’t been that bad since he’s come back after his benching, and i think next year he gets the start. keep in mind he’s working with 2 rookie receivers and almost no running game. i highly doubt that clausen would do much better with the “weapons” cleveland has.

I'm anticipating the following knocks on each
Tate – under 6’ tall. The NFL is trending tall at the WR position these days
Bradford – injury prone
Dwyer – product of the system

the man reminds me of Steve Smith in more ways than one.
I liked your draft for the most part, I’ll just comment on Carolina.
With Snead, Pike, and Tate on the board, there really isn’t a way we can justify taking Colt McCoy. If Moore sucks the rest of the way, entirely possible with the schedule, we might take Pike or Snead. McCoy isn’t an option until the third or fourth, and I honestly hope we don’t draft him.
I think your mock should have gone Tate, Snead, then maybe an OT, we have plenty at young depth at DT, not so much at OT. A backup linebacker would be nice too.

Bengals' Picks
28. Cincinnati Bengals – Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
If he is left on the board then i think he’ll be taken. I don’t think he’ll be around but Cincy’s Offence has gone alittle flat and one-dimensional since Chris Henry went on IR so he seems a perfect fit and adds another redzone target.
60. Cincinnati Bengals – Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
Again a decent pick. Fills two needs (CB and KR) that said i think if Arthur Jones or Sergio Kindle are still on board i’d wager that they get picked. Watching Kindle i think he’d fit perfectly the smash-mouth style of football Cincy is cultivating. He is often seen as a 3-4 OLB but a lot of his snaps last year were played at OLB (as well as DE) and the game tape says to me that he could easily be a SAM LB – allowing Maualuaga to move to MLB. (Although my perception could change depending on the combine and how well he matches up in coverage systems.)
91. Cincinnati Bengals – John Jerry, G, Mississippi
We need a guard. John Jerry is one and he is big. Don’t know if the Bengals pick one this early but i wouldn’t complain.
122. Cincinnati Bengals – Greg Romeus, DE, Pittsburgh
If this guy is still around for this pick and the Bengals get him, wow! I’d do backflips. The guy isn’t elite but he has great character, great motor and is good at everything. As i said, he isn’t really elite at anything but he is solid and hasn’t been playing football all his life so he’ll get even better.
154. Cincinnati Bengals – Earl Mitchell, DT, Arizona
Right spot, but i think wrong type of DT the Bengals will take to back up Peko. The Bengals have Tank and Sims at one spot and have recently signed Shuan Smith (who looks really fat) so that they have a big body to back-up the injured Peko. I think the Bengals will go for a big bodied NT/DT to provide more useful depth (if a good one is available that is).
All in all quite an impressive draft considering they are hard to get right for so many teams with continously changing needs and desires. I think you get the needs down quite well for the Bengals. Some more to think about are SS (Roy Williams looked awesome when he was in but he has ended the year on IR and his career may be over because of a reacurring arm injury). RB (Larry Johnson will be gone by the end of the year, he looks slow and alot like a one year rental – Bengals will either get a RB/KR home-run hitter or a direct late round clone of Benson). And as i noted a OLB. When (if) Maualuga moves back to his college position we’ll need a SAM LB (if he stays at SAM we need a MLB).
But really, a great peice of work and interesting too.

Agreed with everything you said
And thanks for the kind words too.
Honestly, it had occured to me about the size thing you mention re: Mitchell, but I wanted to give them a DT and the list of Big Fat DT’s had grown thin by that point. :)

We already have a Safety who can't cover but can light up people.
I don’t want another one. I think we pick up Cody since as you said earlier:
It might be time for Pittsburgh to begin thinking about grooming Casey Hampton’s eventual successor.and
A true, elite 3-4 NT.
I think in the second round we go Safety. I don’t know much about Hardesty but I don’t think we would pick a RB that early. I think we take a ILB there.
I also don’t think we draft a Line man at all. I think we found our next great UDFA in Ramon Foster T from Tennesse. he’s already beat out our third rounder Urbik and filled in for Kemo wehn he was hurt!

Cody to the Steelers does make a lot of sense
Tomlin seems to like to have his first rounders sit a year or two (Timmons, Mendenhall, now Hood) and learn the game. In Cody’s case, he’ll need that long to get in NFL shape.

I'd argue the other side...
If a player with the potential of Mays drops to Pittsburgh’s slot, I would hope they’d have a hard time passing on him. However IMO Mays will blow everyone away at the combine and Al Davis will scoop him up with the #7 slot.
All the negatives to Mays’ game are the same ones that people said about Polamalu when Pittsburgh drafted him. A year of Mays riding the Pittsburgh bench would really refine his game and hopefully in a few years he could be one of the premier players in the NFL. He wouldn’t HAVE to play FS either. Certainly that would be a good spot for him, but I can’t see why LeBeau would throw him into a linebacker role on occassion.
If our draft goes like you predict, I will be the happiest person in the world. Mays, Washington, Hardesty, and Young? All I can say is WOW.
BTW… Awesome mock. Great job.

Sorry mate, until your Smith makes the amount of Pro Bowls our Smith has, or takes over a game completely like our Smith can, he will always be mini-Steve. Which is odd considering your Steve is bigger than our Steve. : D

Andre Davis was good and so was Jay Ross but...
We just drafted ILB Jason Williams and Safety Mike Hamlin last year.
We would not pass up Arthur Jones to play DE in our scheme, and WR Shipley or WR Easley would be great picks in the third round.

if the player is irrelevant and the team has a good idea that the player will never amount to anything...
yea, it doesn’t mean anything.
Yet, since the Cowboys like Hamlin…why would you draft that position again the next year if you think you got the position solved?
I know the Giants didn’t draft a MLB this season cuz they drafted Jon Goff in the 5th round in 2008. He didn’t do anything last year except go on IR
..why didn’t they draft someone? Cuz they knew he’d be starting one day…which he is.

My three cents
I like Donovan Warren but that seems a little high. I have seen him on other mocks that high as well and I just don’t see it. I am a fan of his though.
Ras-I Dowling seems kind of high to me as well, I wouldn’t be surprised if they go Derrick Morgan, they have some free agents at that position this year and could use an upgrade regardless.
I can see Damian Williams going over Dez Bryant but Brandon LaFell? I’m not a huge a LaFell fan. I can’t see him going before Dez.
Can Jerry Hughes play OLB in a 4-3? I think he’s a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB. I don’t see him as a 4-3 OLB.
I don’t really see Weatherspoon playing OLB in a 3-4 can he move to ILB?
Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.

Hit post too soon
I could see Bradford falling but I have problems seeing Seattle passing him up at #26, the value is too great there.
SydQuan Thompson seems high to me, bad size/speed ratio.
I think Morgan Burnett goes before Nate Allen. Nate Allen is a great talent but could really fall due to the underclassmen at safety if they choose to come out.
I don’t see Arthur Jones falling that far even with the injury.
I don’t think Ricky Sapp plays OLB in a 4-3. Like Hughes I see him as a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB.
Love the Barksdale pick to Chicago. Love IT! I like Naaman Roosevelt but don’t see him going there, They will look to G as well. As unsexy as it is I do believe are first two picks will be T and G. If we did go WR I would prefer Decker, we need size at WR we are stacked with 6’0 and under. I hope we don’t take a MLB.
Dunlap and Kindle really falling that far? I don’t think they make it out of round 2. Hell even in round 3 Al Davis would have to licking his chops to take Dunlap there.
Everson Griffen/Jeremy Beal/Marvin Austin all seem low to me.
Dexter Davis to me is like Jerry Hughes and Ricky Sapp.
Not bad man, Love longer mocks.
Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.

You Botched the Jags mock
This Tim Tebow fiasco is getting out of hand. Everyone stop taking the easy way out and giving the Jags Tebow. They aren’t going to take him, no matter what our dumbass governor says. I’m fine with the linebacker pick, but in no way can you call our linebacker corps under whelming. They are easily the best as a group in the AFC South. I like the Ben Tate pick. He is one of my favorite Tigers as well, so I’d be cool with him in a Jaguars uniform. We are young at receiver, definitely no shallow. Sims-Walker is having a breakout season, Torry Holt is fine for another few years, Mike Thomas is having a fine rookie season, Jarrett Dilliard is a jar on the shelf type of guy, Nate Hughes had a redeeming game this past Sunday, Tiquan Underwood will be good once he gets stronger, and Troy Williamson was about to shed his “bust” label before he was injured. We aren’t shallow at receiver, just young.
We have a need at safety and defensive end. You gave us neither.

DeMeco Ryans is good, but I’d rather have Justin Durant, who has yet to hit his ceiling and is always around the ball, despite it being his first year playing in the middle. I’d sure as hell rather have Daryl Smith over Brian Cushing. And I’ll take Russell Allen, our rookie UDFA who has earned a starting spot and done admirably over Zac Diles. Jags linebackers win

Totally Agreed
On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best mock ever, this would be a 3.
We will pass Tebow in the 1st, guareenteed, I’ll lay down the money. However Any other round, he’s fair game. Qb is not our biggest need and will not help us achieve sustainable Success. If we were hell-bent on getting Tebow we’d trade down to get him.
Our LBs are average, good at run stopping, mediocre at times in Coverage. I’m fine with this pick. We are average, Its our DE’s that fail us in the Pass rush.
RB, Its possible. Though I’d hope to address bigger needs this early in our draft. By no means are we under-whelming. We got a good developmental RB in 7th round pick Rashad Jennings, who has had a couple big runs this year even though he gets less than 5 carries a game.
This is where the ignorance comes in—The Jaguars are shallow at WR!?!?!??!!? Um no.
We have over 5 WR’s that we’re happy with. Allow me to list them to you.
1. Mike Sims-Walker
2. Mike Thomas (WR/PR)
3. Torry Holt (We’ll still have him for a couple more years)
4. Jarrett Dillard (On IR this season after suffering a leg injury, Clutch WR)
5. Troy Williamson, Who has been a bust but now is becoming a solid contributor, got hurt earlier this season.
6. Tiquan Underwood, a Streaky/Fast WR with the potential to one day become a deep threat.
7. Nate Hughes, One of our success is the UDFA department, is becoming a fine WR after suffering a concussion and a bad game in which he was demoted to PS. Has come back to the roster and plays with motivation.
How can you say we’re shallow?
In the 1st Round I would totally love Safety Morgan Burnett, he fits a need and our system. You could go DE like Hardy or Morgan.
In the 3rd, then you could go QB, De if not in the 1st, or Safety, if not in the first.
In the 4th, maybe QB, perhaps Dan Lefevour?
In the 5th, we could select a guard, maybe Sergio Render, to provide depth to an old and decrepit interior line. You could go Center, Ted Larsen from NC Sate would be fine.
Just my two cents.

As a Niner fan perspective who watched them play the Jaguars
The Jaguar pass rush is pathetic. They hardly touched Alex Smith in that game and the Niners O-Line is not impressive. It was the only time all year that the O-Line won the match-up vs the opposing D-Line. Derrick Morgan, Greg Hardy, or Brian Price (if he declares) seem to be the logical choices here.
Having said that, the Jags can’t sellout with a winning record this late in the season. That’s horrible and they organization has to be desperate to find a way to sell out. If the team truly believes that Tebow will sell those tickets they just might make a desperate move. Anyone think, they may try and wait on their 2nd rd. pick to do it? I’m not sure who else would select him that early.

Eagles draft...
NO to Iupati. Our offensive line was horribly injured at the beginning of the season. For all of you who know about the Raiders game in which we game up a bunch of sacks, listen to this. 4/5 starters were out on the offensive line. Now, let’s just forget about that game. Also, for those who mention Shawn Andrews…Winston Justice has been amazing as a replacement at RT and has just gotten a fresh 4-year extension.
Resounding YES to Brandon Graham.
No to Dixon. I mean, I like him, but Andy won’t draft a complimentary back in the 3rd round. You have Sergio Kindle there, and we would take him.
No to Perry Riley, if you give us Kindle. Right there, we’d take Javier Arenas, who the Eagle’s Brass really, really like.
Blair White…meh, sure. But one thing you should know, we have one of the best slot WRs in the game, his name is Jason Avant. If anything, White would be the #5 WR. But, we always love having depth. Solid pick.
No to Boo Robinson. We have great depth at DT.

AS A NINERS FAN
i heartily approve of this mock draft and getting eric berry
by MichaelClutchtree on Dec 11, 2009 1:38 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
It would be great to have one of the top players fall in their lap again. He could immediately supplant Michael Lewis and provide a great upgrade in pass defense.
Here’s my Niner fan perspective: Things will definitely change as declarations, compensatory picks, and FA hit. So I will let you know how these changes might effect the Niners plans going forward. Overall I think your mock is pretty solid.
As for the overhaul in the secondary, I think the Niners are satisfied with CB Spencer (underrated) CB Brown and S Goldson going forward. Clements may move to safety. Bly will look for better offers but the team would bring him back at the right price. Lewis is solid in run support but needs to be taken out during passing downs and the team will look for an upgrade. CB depth is a concern going forward.
As for the offensive line. RT is the biggest need. The Niners should be major players in the FA market this year and any high profile OL will probably get a nice offer from the team. Expect current RT Snyder to be moved back inside as a backup. G Baas needs to finish the year strong in order to be retained. An upgrade there would certainly be welcome as well. The other G Rachal really struggled early but is starting to pick up his play. He has a lot potential so I think he’s safe. The team seems happy with LT Staley and C Heitman.
Another 3-4 OLB or two, PR/KR, and someone (scatback or wide receiver) who can add wrinkles to the offense with speed/quickness are additional needs for the team.
1. Eric Berry – SS Singletary does back flips when he realizes he’s still available. This time he holds his tongue and doesn’t do anything to suggest that he should have been taken earlier.
1b Trent Williams – OT Agree with the idea, the consensus among 49er fans is that they must address the RT position in the early part of the draft or in FA. The player taken will largely depend on the offensive scheme going forward (Unknown). I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded down towards the end of the 1st to address this need because most teams don’t use high 1st rd picks on RT’s… Obviously you can’t predict that. If they pickup a major tackle in FA then Iupati later on would make a lot of sense.
2. Nate Allen – FS Have to disagree here. Though current FS Goldson has had some rough spots this year, I think the team still believes in him going forward. They also have Reggie Smith as a backup who’s been slowed by multiple nagging injuries. A pass rusher to help the secondary is a major concern. Neither OLB’s Haralson or Lawson are dominant rushers. I’m not confident Ahmad Brooks will become one either but he’s getting a chance now to prove it. Anyways, Von Miller, Brandon Graham, Ricky Sapp all fit the need and of course the team would do flips again if Jerry Hughes falls. G and CB are other options.
3. Mitch Petrus – G Makes sense for now. The 49ers have tons of cap space and I believe that they will pursue any elite O-Lineman heavily. So if they reach FA, the likes of Logan Mankins or Marcus McNeil may be in a Niner uniform next year.
Dexter McCluster is an interesting option to me. The team needs a kick/punt returner in the worst way and he would also add an element of speed and quickness to the offense. Isaac Bruce is done and Brandon joins might get cut too because he’s more of an outside receiver. So McCluster could fit multiple roles as a scatback, KR, and 4th WR.
4. Javier Arenas – CB Undersized but he adds value as a kick returner. Can’t complain and it makes sense for the team to add depth at CB in the area of the draft.
5. Travis Ivey – NT Haven’t seen him play so no opinion. Sopoaga is a capable NT backup but not a bad idea. Render to push the starters and add depth makes sense. I agree that Thurmond may be a steal this late in the draft so I wouldn’t mind him. He has more starter potential than Arenas and could take a year to get healthy.
In general you showed knowledge of team needs. Only complaints are that pass rushers in your draft seem to slide down and that doesn’t typically happen. Don’t think Sam Bradford will fall that far unless his shoulder is still not healthy.
Looking forward to seeing the next one

From a Lions perspective.......
I am beating a dead horse here but the Lions are very unlikely to pick an LT at #4. The problem with the Lions O line is the Guard play, not Jeff Backus at LT.
Based on the players available in your mock I see this:
- Gerald McCoy – DT A great pass rushing, penetrating DT to pair with run stuffing Sammie Lee Hill.
- Mike Johnson – G A very good Guard to solidify that line. Or Brandon Ghee – CB. I don’t like what I have seen of Robinson this year.
- Could be an RB. Dixon is also possible here. Joseph Barksdale -OT and Greg Romeus – DE would also get a lot of consideration here. I would take Romeus.
- Javier Arenas – CB/Return He would be a great nickel back ans solid return man.
- Stuckey might be the best value here or the best available WR. Especially a slot guy. I don’t know the receivers that well [hey I’m a Lions fan] so not sure who would fit.
- BPA Mesko – K/P could work. Hanson is not having a good year and his kickoffs are brutal or Ducasse – G or again the best WR prospect around.
I am in awe of the work you put in on this. Well done.

A player who I did not see listed and who may be coming out is Reshad Jones of Georgia.
He would be an outstanding complement to our lone Safety,Louis Delmas. We would probably take him in the third or fourth round if we were fortunate enough for him to land there. I don’t see Romeus in the third round or Arenas in the fourth, but then you never know.

Take an OT
Even if Jeff Backus is a good LT I don’t know of anyone who thinks he is as good as Okung. Stafford needs protection. You passed last year and went with a TE. This year I think you need a great OT. If indeed you think Bacus is the answer then I doubt you pass on Erick Berry. Now as a viking fan that scares me. I will say that you could get a decent OT in the second round.
by lifelongvike on Dec 11, 2009 11:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry llv, the Lions will not take an LT in the early rounds.
Backus is fine for now, and our problems are at the Guard and RT spots. Cherilus, our RT, is still young and will probably get a chance to improve. He has also been hurt all season. Jared Allen was shut down in our two games against you. He had one sack on a brain freeze by our fullback. Ray Edwards owned Cherilus and caused all the grief in the Detroit backfield. You guys better hang onto him.
I am not a big fan of Eric Berry for our first pick. He is the best Safety in the draft, but I think there are an incredible number of good safeties who will be in the draft this year. And I am not including Taylor Mays in that list.

I will give the Lions credit for a good draft last year. Much different than the McMillen Era. Looks like your talent evaluation department is getting much better. All I know is that with your 4th pick I would take the best Defensive player Available if you don’t need an OT. All I read is that Erick Berry is that special person. Good Luck to your team in getting back to parity.

As a chiefs fan
I agree that some of the picks are bad.
Its clear that OL, especially OT doesnt have the talent that other previous top OT’s in the draft have. WIth that said, I strongly believe that Okung and Baluga will NOT be coming to the Chiefs. It doesnt make sense to fill a hole that has already been filled (thats what I tell some of these guys at AP who want to trade Dorsey and a pick to move up and take Suh) We just drafted a Left Tackle whos only in his second season. Yes, he’s struggled this season but its too early to give up on him. The only way I see us drafting a tackle is if Waters is traded and the intent is to move Albert back to his college position.
So that brings me to my next point. We drafted Branden Albert..a college LG converted to LT who had a good rookie year and a sophomore slump. IF..and thats a big IF..he is moved..he would be moved to his college position..LG. This mock draft has us drafting a LT AND a LG. Unless they plan on putting Buluga on the right. (why would we draft a RIGHT tackle so high anyway?)
I like the Weatherspoon pick. But then..Mardy Gilyard goes to the Chiefs..but Danario Alexander goes later? Uhh..come on. We’re Kansas City. IF..and again a big IF…Danario Alexander is still there in the 3rd round when the Chiefs pick..I think we’d choose him over Gilyard.
Because of OT not being a top level talent as in previous years (Jake Long, Joe Thomas, Jason Brown>Okung, Buluga) I think the Chiefs have to look past their position of most need (OL) and go with the 2nd most position of need, which IMO..is Safety. Therefore..
Berry
Weatherspoon
Mike Johnson (I’m leaving this pick alone because I believe Albert WILL be next years LT and Waters will not be here.)
Alexander
AFter that..I dont know. Its ridiculous to try and predict that far into the draft in December.
by Petey14 on Dec 16, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Waters is NOT a tackle anymore, and Albert isn’t a left tackle. Drafting someone new isn’t ‘giving up’ on him, its just moving him to his real position.
Weatherspoon would be an awful fit in your defense BTW
by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 17, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
First of all
What are you talking about?
“Waters is NOT a tackle anymore”…Waters NEVER was a tackle in the NFL. He was a TE in college and played DE his senior year. He played C for 1 game in the NFL and LG for every other game in his career. I dont know how you got the impression that Waters is a tackle..but its incorrect.
Youre saying move Albert to LG and draft a LT. Okay..fair..but WHY does he have us drafting a G? He said that the G is to replace Brian Waters right? Brian Waters plays LG. But Branden Albert is going back to his college position at LG right? So now..Branden Albert is the new LG..and Buluga is the LT…so we draft a G (that was supposed to replace Brian Waters) and have him sit on the bench behind Branden Albert?
The Chiefs need a RG. The poster has us drafting a pass protecting LG when we already have 1 instead of a run blocking RG like we need.
Albert isnt going to get moved. I’d bet everything on it. All the experts having been saying the Chiefs would go OL for 3 years and it hasnt happened. Everyone thought we’d take Matt Ryan or trade down (if possible) and take Clady. Last year every one said it would be Eugene Monroe. Now people want Okung/Buluga. Its not going to happen.

The
Texans will almost certainly not take a TE in the third. They already have their “Jason Whitten” in Owen Daniels, they drafted Anthony Hill and James Casey last year, and they also have Joel Dreesen, who is fine for a blocker/backup.
What they would probably want to go for there is either the DT you have them going for later, an interior lineman, or more secondary help.

1 last comment about Jaguars 1st round pick
I dare you and any other mocker to be creative and not take the easy to grasp pick. Since we all know about the possibility, I’d love to learn about others.

The purpose of a mock is to do what you think will happen.

It gets redundant when you continually see a Tebow selection
and have to explain why you’ve for or against it.

How come no one covers Steve Smith?

Neither does Casey Hampton, and he’s gonna get a big paycheck despite his age.
But I would agree he looks like a player that could easily fall. Too many 3-4 teams out there for him to fall too far. If he shows up willing to give decent effort he’s a starting NT on a 3-4 team. Heck if he falls I could see the Steelers taking him.

I dunno man..
I’ve seen Casey Hampton…you gotta put 2-3 blockers on Casey Hampton.
I’ve seen a center handle “Mt. Cody”.
He’s not that strong for such a big guy.
He looks like Ted Washington or Sam Adams….but he’s not those guys.
