2010 Mock Draft : Updated 12/15
1. St. Louis Rams: Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame
The Rams number one priority this off season will be to find a new Quarterback. There’s no debate about it. In the last two years they have passed on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez. Clausen had a great season despite his teams overall poor play and scouts will love the fact that he plays in a pro-style offense under center. Heading into an uncapped year means the Rams can dump Marc Bulger’s salary without any future consequences. If they manage to find a QB in free agency they might target Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh, who has solidified himself as the most dominant defensive player in college football this year.
2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska
The Bucs don’t need a QB or a LT so Suh wins by default since their other greatest need is a WR but there isn’t one worthy of this high a pick. Right now their most pressing need is for someone to collapse the pocket and Suh can do that very well. Suh is the type of 3 down, 2-gap player that is perfect for defensive coordinator Jim Bates’ scheme. After watching Suh absolutely dominate Texas’ lineman in the Big12 championship to the tune of 4 & ½ sacks and being the first defensive player since 1997 to be invited to the Heisman ceremony, he looks to be the best defensive lineman prospect since Warren Sapp. As long as he’s available, Suh is the pick. If he’s not then this pick would change to Tenn. Safety Eric Berry.
3. Detroit Lions: Russell Okung OT, Oklahoma State
The Lions need a cornerstone LT to protect their 40 million dollar man in Matt Stafford. Okung is the top LT prospect and plays a near-flawless game. He's athletic, uses his hands very well, and has quick feet to get out in front of speed rushers. Current Lion Jeff Backus is having an up and down season and would better serve the team being moved to RT and they could move Goster Cherilus to RG. If Okung is off the board at this point, look for the Lions to take the best defensive player available or trade back to acquire more picks. This team needs playmakers everywhere other than QB or TE, so this pick could be any of the elite prospects that are available.
4. Cleveland Browns: Eric Berry S, Tennessee
Cleveland needs help everywhere. This franchise is a disaster. I could possibly see them going after a QB if they don’t feel as though Brady Quinn is the answer in which case they would go for Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen, although Quinn has shown a little improvement over the last several weeks. Already having a cornerstone LT in Joe Thomas means they won’t target OK ST OT Russell Okung. Not only myself but every draft pundit you hear, including Mel Kiper and Todd McShay of ESPN, have said that Berry is an absolute stud and top player of this draft. He's drawing comparisons to Ed Reed, which is just about the best compliment a safety can get. Berry is a nightmare for opposing QB's. College teams don't even throw in his direction. He's got a nose for the ball and is a serious threat to take a pick back to the house every time. In the event that team owner Randy Learner fires coach Mangini at the end of his first season, this will almost definitely change to QB as most new coaches would prefer to start with a QB of their own choosing.
5. Kansas City Chiefs: Bruce Campbell OT, Maryland
Matt Cassell needs a LT that will give him enough time to throw the ball down field. KC spent a lot of money on Cassell and it would be nice if they got a return on their investment. It would also allow them to move 2008 1st round pick Brandon Albert to LG, his natural position, since it doesn't seem like he can make it playing on the outside. Campbell is showing strong play this season and is very similar to Okung. With Berry already off the board there are no other elite prospects available at a position of need for the Chiefs to consider with a top 5 pick aside from OT. In the event that KC decides to skip on Campbell given his injury history, look for them to trade back and target USC OT Charles Brown or Florida CB Joe Hayden.
6. Oakland Raiders: Taylor Mays S, USC
I continue to waffle on this pick. Al Davis’ love for speed might be too big to pass on Mays, although he will stumble out of the top 10 to 15 on draft day if he falls past Oakland. As many who have read my mock draft before already know, I’m not very high on Mays. He plays without discipline, has stiff hips, takes poor angles, and is usually more worried about laying someone out rather than holding his coverage. If Oakland comes to its senses and picks a replacement for the failed JaMarcus Russell experiment, Davis will surely go with Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett who has a cannon for an arm. And don’t be surprised if Davis goes with Florida DE Carlos Dunlap, whose freakish measurables Davis with also love.
7. Washington Redskins: Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma
With the way Jason Campbell is continuing his poor play the Redskins(Dan Snyder) will definitely look to replace him, regardless of the fact that Snyder’s impatience with head coaches and coordinators is the reason for it or not. In all likelihood Coach Zorn will be fired at the end of the season. Regardless of whom Snyder gets to replace him they will want to bring a new QB to start fresh. A better pick would be an OT but Snyder is going to go with a flashy, big name like Bradford. As ESPN has reported, Bradford is having his shoulder operated on by the renowned Dr. James Andrews, who also just happens to be the Redskins team doctor. So Snyder will definitely have the inside track on whether Bradford’s shoulder is going to hold up. If Snyder doesn’t think Bradford shoulder will hold up they may target Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett.
8. Buffalo Bills: Gerald McCoy DT, Oklahoma
McCoy is considered by many to be the most technically sound defensive lineman and would be perfect to help the Bills horrendous run defense. Look for the Bills to fill the gaping hole left by the Jason Peters trade to Philly if McCoy isn’t available. It’s also not out of the question that they target one of the top tier QB’s such given that they will have a new head coach and as of yet Trent Edwards hasn’t been able to distinguish himself.
9. Seattle Seahawks: Ryan Mallett QB, Arkansas
Look for the Hawks to find an heir apparent to often injured Matt Hasselbeck. Mallett has a few kinks to work out with his footwork but he has a rocket for an arm and has played impressively this year. Another dire need is to replace the aging and oft-injured Walter Jones. They may consider trading back and targeting Rutgers’ Anthony Davis or USC OT Charles Brown. If Bruce Campbell or even Russell Okung manages to slip then I would expect the Seahawks to go for one of them and try to find a project QB later in the draft such as Old Miss. QB Jevan Snead or Texas’ Colt McCoy.
10. Denver Broncos(via Chicago Bears): Rolando McClain ILB, Alabama
The Broncos have very few holes to fill as they have plenty of young talent that will develop over time. But after going 6-0 they have been exposed for their lack of the deep ball. If given the opportunity they may look to go QB with this pick if one of the top prospects at the position slips. With Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley, and Brandon Marshall they really need a strong armed QB that can sling it downfield. Look for them to take the best defensive player available if none of the QB’s slip down this far. McClain is continuing to rise up draft boards and would be a perfect fit considering he already plays in a 3-4 defense at Alabama. Other considerations would be a NT like Alabama’s Terrence Cody, be he’s starting to fall due to conditioning concerns, and Florida’s Joe Hayden.
11. San Francisco 49ers(via Carolina Panthers): Joe Hayden CB, Florida
Hayden is the top CB prospect in this draft. The 49ers need someone to shore up their secondary. Perhaps their greatest need is a RT to play opposite Joe Staley which they could address with their other first round pick. There will also be good RT prospects available in the second round such as Notre Dames’ Sam Young.
12. Houston Texans: Earl Thomas S, Texas
The Texans need help in multiple areas but the biggest concern is in the secondary, especially if they let the unhappy Dunta Robinson leave via free agency in the offseason. Thomas is only a red shirt sophomore but is having a great year and being a local boy will only help boost ticket sales. Thomas has been quoted as saying that he will not pass on first round money. They would absolutely love for Joe Hayden to slip to them.
13. San Francisco 49ers: Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Bulaga has had a down season with injuries and a thyroid condition but would be a perfect fit at RT at the pro level with his work ethic and run-blocking ability. I know this seems high for a right tackle but having a road grader to open up more running lanes for Frank Gore is worth the price. They may also consider a long-term solution to their QB troubles if Mallett slips, although Alex Smith seems to be redeeming his career after a porous start
14. Pittsburgh Steelers: Dan Williams NT, Tennessee
Unfortunately what the Steelers need, help in the secondary, is not going to be filled if they end up drafting here. This is too high for any of the DB’s that would be available. Without question the Steelers greatest need is in the secondary, either a cornerback or safety. It’s become ridiculous to watch this group give up leads, and eventually the game, each week to far inferior opponents. They need a safety who would eventually replace Ryan Clark given that he’s in the final year of his contract and he’s over 30 years old, and replace Tyrone Carter who has been burned badly in each game while filling in for Troy. I’m positive Ryan Clark will take a discount to finish his career in the Burgh. In my opinion Williams has surpassed “Mount” Cody as the top NT prospect in the draft. He’s got all the attributes that Cody has plus he doesn’t seem to wear down as much during the course of a game. We can target a safety in round two such as South Florida’s Nate Allen, or in the third with Georgia’s Reshad Jones. Casey Hampton is 32 years old, in the final year of his contract, and with two Super Bowl rings already on his chubby fingers he may seek a big pay day somewhere else. The Steelers are going to need someone large enough to anchor their defense so the linebackers can continue to flow freely to the opposing QB. The offensive line for the most part has gotten better every week and no longer seems like a dire position of need. Idaho’s Mike Iupati could fill the one weak point at RG where Darnell Stapleton and Trai Essex are lacking and rookie Craig Urbik didn’t show much during the off season. He’s a big road grader and could possibly slide over and play RT if Willie Colon leaves via free agency. Although at 14 its way too high to consider any lineman other than tackle. Of course there’s also a chance the Steelers may be able to get him or Alabama OG Mike Johnson in the second or third round. Cornerback could also be another option considering none of the rookies from last year have seemed to distinguish themselves, although it’s definitely too early to tell. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Steelers trade up and target Joe Hayden. To a lesser extent would be to find an eventual replacement for James Farrior. He’s playing at a high level this year but he’s 34 years old and since it takes a couple years for linebackers to learn the system anyway it would be nice to find his replacement now. Keyarn Fox has filled in admiralbly at ILB of Lawrence Timmons but is not a permanant solution. Besides, Fox is too valuable as a special teamer. If he’s available we should definitely take Rolando McClain. A lot of people are high on Florida ILB Brandon Spikes, who may be great against the run but is somewhat of a liability in zone coverage. An option in the third round would be TCU ILB Daryl Washington. A player I really like in the later rounds would be Baylor’s ILB Joe Pawelek. Clemson RB C.J. Spiller would be a slightly long-shot option. Willie Parker is most likely not going to be resigned in the off season and Spiller would be a great speedy compliment to Mendenhall’s power for a lot less cost than Parker. But more importantly he would also fill what has become a dire position of need over the years as a return man. Stephan Logan has been serviceable but it’s inefficient to have a return specialist on the active roster, plus he can’t manage to down a kickoff for a touchback even when he’s 7 yards deep. One player I would love for the Steelers to take in the second or third round would be Stanford RB Toby Gerhart, who has become my official man-crush, regardless of whether the Steelers need him or not.
15. Atlanta Falcons: Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech
The Falcons will take the best defensive player available, particularly an OLB or DE. Previously I had them taking Ole’ Miss. DE Greg Hardy but he has some injury issues the last two years and wasn’t even able to finish out this season. Morgan’s stock has continued to grow with each passing week this season and he has become the top DE for a 4-3 scheme. Look for the Falcons to also target a DB like Virginia’s Ras-I Dowling.
16. Tennessee Titans: Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida
Who would have thought that Vince Young would turn this season around? The Titans are starting to roll after the most disappointing start a team could have. They have multiple needs but Young’s play so far means they won’t be looking for a QB. Cornerback is their biggest need but without one worthy of this pick they’ll address their D-line which has been exposed by the loss of Albert Haynesworth to free agency. Anyone who’s read my mock draft before knows I’m not big on Dunlap and I have likened him to Vernon Gholston. But there’s no denying his physical gifts and maybe the Titans can get him to mature.
17. New York Jets: Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State
The Jets biggest need is in the secondary, particularly a corner to play opposite Darrell Revis. Unfortunately there are no corners besides Joe Hayden that are worthy of a pick this high although they could target Ras-I Dowling. They may also look for defensive line help at DT where Kris Jenkins has had the second season-ending injury of his career and also for a defensive end that can play in a 3-4, but there are none worthy of a pick this high. The suspension of Bryant for lying about conversations with Deion Sanders will not hurt is draft stock. He’s got all the intangibles you look for in a receiver and looks a lot like Andre Johnson did when he came out of Miami. The Jets may also consider USC WR Damian Williams, whom QB Mark Sanchez had a great re pore with during his last year in college and will almost assuredly lobby for.
18. Jacksonville Jaguars: Tim Tebow QB/H-Back, Florida
The Jags young receiving corps has come on this year and as such seems to be no longer a dire position of need. It’s only been recently that I’ve had Tebow going in the first round of the draft. As the Jags continue to win games and fall back in the draft order Tebow has become are real option for them, especially since team owner Wayne Weaver had said previously that he would draft him given the opportunity. What the Jags need most is a big name to lure fans to the game so they don’t eventually become the L.A. Jaguars. I know he isn’t a first round talent but this pick is not about talent, it’s about selecting a local hero who will bring fans to the game. Another option here would be a 4-3 defensive end as the Jags make the transition back to after a woeful attempt at using a 3-4 in which case Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan would be a good option if he manages to slip down this far. I would’ve considered giving them Florida’s Carlos Dunlap if he were available but I think they have had their fill of under-performing and immature DE’s from Florida like Derrick Harvey.
19. Miami Dolphins: Terrence Cody DT, Alabama
With the secondary shored up in last years draft look for the Fins to plug up their defensive front. They have been using aging veterans to plug the gaps for some time and could really use a shot of youth. Alternatives here could be help at linebacker. Team architect Bill Parcells may not look favorably on Cody’s prior weight issues in which case he may go for a receiver to help the progression of young QB Chad Henne. The best option would be USC WR Damian Williams, who many consider to be the most complete WR in the draft. They would also consider Missouri OLB Sean Weatherspoon or Oklahoma’s Travis Lewis.
20. New York Giants: Ras-I Dowling, CB/FS Virginia
Previously I would’ve thought the Giants would continue to stock pile D-linemen but they have been shredded through the air and could really use secondary help, particularly at safety. Dowling has played CB at Virginia but has the size to also develop into a quality free safety in the pros and would be a good match with Kenny Phillips when he returns from injury next year. They may also consider a MLB to eventually replace Antonio Pierce, who even before his injury this year was struggling.
21. Baltimore Ravens: Damian Williams WR, USC
This is a toss-up between a WR and Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham. Todd Heap has been surprisingly healthy this year which is the first time in a long time. Many consider Williams to be the most complete WR in the draft. He can also give a boost in the return game as well. A lot of people will think that the Ravens will draft a CB, especially considering how badly they have been torched through the air, but the Ravens draft on value and there won’t be any other first round CB’s left. If not Williams then Gresham will be the pick.
22. Arizona Cardinals: Anthony Davis OT, Rutgers
Arizona needs LT help bad. They drafted Levi Brown a couple years ago to be a RT when they thought Matt Leinart, a lefty, would be the QB of the future. Well he hasn't been so far and Warner is suffering because of it. Having Davis slip down this far would be ideal for the Cards.
23. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver Broncos): Charles Brown OT, USC
Having taken care of their QB needs earlier in the draft, the Seahawks will look to take the best OT available. Walter Jones will probably retire at the end of the season and Sean Locklear cannot stay healthy. They will need someone to keep Matt Hasselbeck upright long enough for them to develop Ryan Mallett. They may also look for a RB, but they should be able to grab either Cal’s Jahvid Best or Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer in the second round.
24. Dallas Cowboys: Trent Williams OT, Oklahoma
The Cowboys need to take an OT to replace the aging Flozell Adams who’s just too old to hack it anymore. They also need help at safety and perhaps a receiver like Notre Dame’s Golden Tate to go with Miles Austin. Jerry Jones may look to trade up for a flashier pick.
25. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle DE/OLB, Texas
The Patriots need more youth and depth in their linebacking corps. Kindle lines up all over the field for Texas and is the sort of versatile player Belichick loves. And speaking of versatility, it wouldn’t shock me to see them draft Tim Tebow if he slips past Jacksonville. He could be their QB for life after Brady. And yes I know this is high for a QB who could be a back-up for a few years, but he can also serve as an H-back and be put in for trick plays such as the Wildcat. He also has that air of smugness that reminds me of Brady that I hate so much.
26. Green Bay Packers: Jason Fox OT, Miami
Green Bay will take the best tackle available after watching QB Aaron Rogers eat dirt every week. It’s obvious that Rogers is starting to show that the never-ending beatings each week are taking a toll on him. This is a little high for Fox, who may consider to be a high second round pick, so they may look to add an OLB to replace Aaron Kampman who’s in the final year of his contact and clearly not comfortable after making the switch from DE to OLB.
27. Philadelphia Eagles: Travis Lewis OLB, Oklahoma
Without any tackle prospects left to replace the often injured Shawn Andrews, look for the Eagles to take the top DE or Linebacker prospect available. Lewis is only a redshirt sophomore and in the event that he decides to stay in school this pick would change to Missouri’s Sean Weatherspoon. They also need to fill the DE spot opposite of Trent Cole but may find better value for that in the second round.
28. Cincinnati Bengals: Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma
The Bengals don’t have many real needs at this point, so look for them to take Gresham to shore up the weak point on their explosive offense. Even though he's been out with a knee injury for the year, he will have plenty of time to rehab before the NFL combine.
29. San Diego Chargers: Brandon LaFell WR, LSU
Assuming they resign LT Marcus McNeill and in all probability franchise tag Shawn Merriman, they will most likely target someone to play opposite budding wideout Vincent Jackson. Other options may be to take Clemson RB C.J. Spiller since they will most likely lose either Darren Sproles to free agency or cut LaDainian Tomlinson after the season, or a NT to replace the aging Jamal Williams. Unfortunately with “Mount” Cody and Dan Williams already taken, there are no other prospect NT’s with a first round grade. LaFell fits the mold of a taller wideout that the Chargers prefer.
30. Minnesota Vikings: Greg Hardy DE, Ole’ Miss.
Without too many major holes on the team the Vikings have the luxury of bolstering the strength of their team, the defensive line. The one weak link is the end spot opposite Jared Allen. Hardy has some injury issues but is adept at playing both the run and the pass. They may also consider future replacements for the Williams boys such as Rickey Sapp of Clemson or Jared Odrick from Penn State.
31. Indianapolis Colts: Sean Weatherspoon OLB, Missouri
As always, the defense is the weak spot on this team. Weatherspoon is probably the best OLB suited to play in a base 4-3 defense. The Colts will also consider a CB such as Wake Forest’s Brandon Ghee or GT free safety Morgan Burnett. Also, don’t be surprised to see them trade up for a LT prospect, where Tony Ugoh’s replacement Charles Johnson will be a free agent.
32. New Orleans Saints: C.J. Spiller RB, Clemson
There are rumors that the Saints will be letting go of Reggie Bush in the offseason. His injury history and unreliability are not worth the 8 millions dollars he will be due. The Saints will need to find someone to replace him. Spiller is similar in the aspects of speed and vision, only he does not shy away from contact. They may also consider taking a linebacker, especially if Sean Weatherspoon is still available.

Nice mock.
Good work.
I always gotta comment on the Giants pick…and I like Dowling.
I still think he may be there in round 2…so, I think that since CJ Spiller is there, the Giants gotta pounce.
He’s just too unique a talent to pass up.
The Giants could potentially get Dowling in round 2…or a similar type player.
One rookie safety is not gonna solve all their problems on defense (it also won’t help their players on offense…CATCH THE DAMN BALL!!!)
…maybe Spiller will CATCH THE DAMN BALL???

How come no one covers Steve Smith?
Hey FB, I thought the Giants don't use first round picks for Running Backs?
I could have sworn I read that on one of these sites.
I did say that.
Spiller is not Tyrone Weatley, Ron Dayne, or Joe Montgomery.
…he’s not a slow plodding, “i can tell he’s a bust already” type player.
Exceptions can be made for a speed talent like Spiller.
And really…he’s not a RB, or at least full time RB IMO. Punt returner…slot WR, screen RB, is what I’d like him to be used as.
Plus….Tiki Barber was a good pick, more like Spiller than the other POS’s they draft. He was an actual athlete.

OK mock
I don’t think Spiller falls that far, agree with FreeBradshaw. He’s more of a mid-rounder in my book, at the latest San Diego will take him.
Again, I don’t see Cody as a first-rounder, unless he turns into a workout warrior between now and the Combine. Not. At. All.
For the Chiefs, I doubt that they will find a taker to trade down, unless Mallett comes out and Bradford is healthy and throws well before the draft: then Buffalo, Washington, Seattle or Oakland might get itchy trigger fingers for him or Bradford and feel the need to hop ahead in line to assure that they will get their guy.
“With the way Jason Campbell is continuing his poor play the Redskins (Dan Snyder) will definitely look to replace him”
I keep seeing this line in your mocks, but Campbell is playing pretty well, especially considering the protection, or lack thereof, he gets. Campbell is completing 65.3% of his passes (8th in the league, ahead of guys like Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Matt Hasselbeck, and others), for 2946 yards (14th, but still solid), 7.40 YPA (14th), 17 TDs (tied for 14th), 12 INTs (10th most, but 2 less than Peyton Manning, Matt Schaub, and only 1 more than Brady, Eli Manning, Roethlisberger), and an 89.0 QB rating (14th). The stats paint a pretty solid picture, and that’s even more impressive considering the lack of help he’s been getting, especially from the offensive line; at one point, he was getting hit on 3-step drops, which is unacceptable. He’s also one tough son of a gun, and has really come on strong of late.
My point isn’t that Snyderatto won’t draft Bradford, or any other QB, because, well, its Snyderatto. My point is merely that if they draft a QB, its not not because Campbell isn’t playing well. In my opinion, QB is the last thing we need to draft, because I think Jason can be a very solid QB for years to come.
I agree.
The whole Jason Campbell sucks this is unwarranted.
He’s not bad, hell, good even and certainly the Redskins are not going to be helped by drafting a QB in the first round.
O-line I’d think right?
Plus, all those WR/TE you drafted are going into their 3rd year? Usually they show signs of life earlier, but usually 3rd years is when they become a player anyway.
Redskins will be scary next year…if they can get out of their own way…
The Redskins will NOT be scary next year if they get rid of Campbell and go at it with a new QB.

O-line
is most def the way to go in the 1st.
The WR/TEs we drafted are showing strong signs of improvement. TE Fred Davis has been very good since Chris Cooley was hurt, WR Devin Thomas has started to step up his game (7 catches for 100 yards + 2 TDs against the Saints), and WR Malcolm Kelly has shown improvement, too.
I’d say we need O-line first (tackles, then interior), then LB (either one to push Orakpo to DE full-time or one to eventually replace London Fletcher at MLB), then some help in the secondary (a FS would be nice, push Landry back to SS, some CBs too), RB…
I hope they don't show too much improvement this coming Monday night :)
Tho…the following Sunday against Dallas…maybe they can do us another favor?

I also agree with mm41. Campbell is not their problem on offence.
The Redskins will be in a great spot to possibly get the second best Left Tackle prospect. I think the Lions will pass on Okung and take Gerald McCoy at #3 or #4. If the Chiefs are ahead of the Skins they will likely grab Okung, leaving Bruce Campbell or Anthony Davis.
Maybe in your next update [tomorrow?] you can change that pick.
I don't think the Chargers draft LaFell to help V Jak.
First V Jak is a FA himself while Floyd and Nannae aren’t. plus Those to our playing well not to mention Buster Davis.
its nice 5 other people mentioned it but Campbell has been good this year!!
that shit didn’t make sense but the mock is aight .Dez Bryant should be higher, so should Anthony Davis

I’m not going to respond the mocks that have Tebow going to us in the first.

Bjf, I feel your pain. The easy and common Mock pick for Detroit is Okung.
The truth about mock drafts is that all the myths about your team needs will be endlessly echoed in virtually every mock draft.
For the Lions it goes like this……you have a new QB; you must protect that investment; the LT is the most important player on the O line; if you don’t have an All Pro LT or if your LT is over 30 you must upgrade; and magically your O line problems will be solved and your QB will never be touched again.
As if most teams don’t have a big interest in keeping their QB upright; there are four other players on the O line; and there is nothing wrong with having an average LT if the other players on your line are worse than that; and every QB will get hit at some time during the season.

well...
is Okung a terrible pick? There is football logic to taking Okung…if he is far and away the best tackle in the draft…why the hell not?
Tebow…..Tebow for the reason to sell tickets..is about as stupid as it gets.
I’ve been agreeing with you, that DT like Suh would make more sense…but, if Okung goes and has a Jason Smith type combine…its like getting a All-Pro Lt would be a bad thing…

Any talent upgrade is a good thing FB
I have nothing against Okung. I agree that he is the best LT in this draft. I don’t know if he is any better than Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, or Jake Long. And I don’t know if he is going to be a perennial All Pro. Maybe, maybe not. I just see the Lions with a real problem at the Guard position and selecting Okung will not help that. If someone argued that they should pick Okung in the first just for his value over McCoy or Berry, I would understand that. But they argue that it will fix the O line. No, I don’t think so.
For short and long term value I would argue that Anthony Davis would be a better pick. He could play Guard right now and hopefully move to a Tackle position, Left or Right, in a few years. No one is arguing that.
NOTE: I would not pick Anthony Davis at #3 or #4.
If your right,
and you have been consistent that Detroit doesn’t need a LT, then selecting a prospect like Berry with the #3 pick would be the answer. You can pick up other qualified lineman later. I would suggest trading down but I think the Lions need highly qualified athletes at several positions.
Note: Picking Okung, just because he is available isn’t all that bad a draft strategy.
by lifelongvike on Dec 17, 2009 8:58 AM EST up reply actions
I agree with your last statement. If he has the most long term value to Detroit, then draft him.
Although Detroit is in a bit of a trap where some short term improvement is required to prevent the fan base from evaporating.
I would argue that a near elite DT [McCoy] or DE [Morgan] would accomplish that and still provide a lot of long term value. Maybe not as much as an LT.
I suspect that the Lions will be picking in the top ten next year too. A near elite LT might make more sense then, rather than now. Barksdale or Bulaga may stay for their senior year and be great value.
Their is still a long way to go until draft day. As usual, a lot will change before then.

Center.
read above.
No team with a good line has a pile of crap at center.
That’s the anchor of the line.
LT can be ‘average’ or above average.
WHY centers aren’t drafted higher….beats me.
All-Pro LT’s seem to be the ‘glamor’ position of the o-line, but if the center can’t coordinate the line and block the blitz up the guy…the QB’s just as toast as if there was a speed rushing DE bulldozing the LT.

Cleveland has a good center. Our O-line isn’t that good.

He’s not there yet.

Trust me. He is very good. He has done great against nose tackles like Hampton and Ngata

Ok...
he’s done good on his own.
An great center anchors the entire line. He does what he’s supposed to do up the middle…but he also shifts the line coverage where its supposed to be (of course..with the help of the QB too).
I know he’s good. But just cuz he locks up NT’s doesn’t mean he’s a true OL anchor yet.

Pulling Straws
There bruh. The center definitely has to anchor the line, but there is no way to tell that watching the game.

Yeah
But you can never have enough tackles, even if you think you are set. I saw in the Thanksgiving game that Stafford just kept getting killed, from both the outside and inside. Eyes don’t lie bro. Plus Okung is a great lineman. Tebow isn’t worth a first round pick. Just turning into a joke…

Can your eyes tell us if they all came from the left side?
Why would you replace your LT when you have huge problems at the Guard spots and at Right Tackle? Oh yeah, Okung is a great lineman so I guess we should draft him! Great!
NorthLeft is exactly right
We are a lot worse at the Guard position than the Left Tackle position. The great thing about that is you can get the best second-best Guard at the top of the 2nd round, or get a good one in the 3rd round too, whereas the best Left Tackle is usually gone at the top of the 1st round (where I’d rather get an immediate-impact defensive player).
This is how I’d explain why I’d rather see the Lions go Defense at the top of the draft and get a solid Guard in round 2 (or 3):

I Hear You
But you aren’t going to draft a guard in the top 5 of the first round. Why can’t the Lions dedicate the early part of the draft to fixing the worst thing on their team other than the defensive line, and that is the offensive line. Okung, according to your graph, still offers a lot of improvement to the Lions. Grab one of the Pouncey twins in the second, and suddenly your offensive line is miles ahead of last year; and you can focus on getting defensive lineman in the third and later. The Jags proved this year that defensive line talent can be found beyond round 2 with Terrance Knighton.

We'd get a lot more value from a DT at #4 than an OT
Our DT position is in as bad shape as our LG position. We would get more immediate improvement, overall, I think, taking Gerald McCoy than Russell Okung.
Immediate
Sounds great if the Lions want to live in the moment, but I think protecting your multi-million dollar man is more important than getting a defensive tackle, who you can get later in the draft. Stafford won’t survive long getting hit as he is. Offensive line should be your first priority.
It’s not like the Lions are going to be turned around and contending for the playoffs with this next draft. You guys still have a good two to three more years of drafting and smartly signing free agents to get back to where you want to be as a franchise. You have plenty of time to get a defensive tackle.

That's why we need to upgrade the OG position now and the LT position sooner or later -- to protect Stafford
DT and OG are immediate needs, and currently bigger than LT. Jeff Backus is a better LT for the next year or two than any LG or DT (playing next to Sammie Hill) currently on our roster.
Right now, drafting a LG would fill a bigger hole on the O-Line than drafting a LT. No Guard is worth the #4 overall, so that’s why I’d like to get a DT (Suh or McCoy) at #4 overall to help fix our terrible defense, and get a solid guard in the 2nd or 3rd.
Aight
We are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I think it would be smarter to take two offensive lineman in the first two rounds. Okung in the first and one of the guards in the second. That way your biggest investment on the team, and that is Matthew Stafford, doesn’t have to retire in his second season because of injuries. Defense can wait.

You are a moron
By spending 2 picks on the oline which is really only missing one major piece. (S. Peterman can play the other guard spot but is injured. You are ignoring the biggest need on the team the Dline is bad so bad that I wouldn’t be against using the first two picks on it. A guard alone will drastically improve our line. While it is important to fix the line grabbing a LT just to grab an LT makes no sense a good guard will allow for less need for double teams and more cohesion among the line.
Aight Dude
Wanna resort to name calling, fine. My opinion is that it would be smart to load up on offensive line to protect Stafford, who looks to have a very promising career ahead of him, instead of getting him killed and turning him into the next David Carr. Like I said, Detroit doesn’t have to become good all in one draft. They have time to take defensive linemen in the third, where the Jags found Terrance Knighton, who has turned out very well. They also have time to take them next year. Six or seven wins would be huge for the Lions next year, which they could get if they got their offense respectable on a weekly basis.

Iupati [maybe], Asamoah, or Johnson will be available in the second round.
Bjf, That is one strategy to improve the Lions. I agree with n4ry4 that McCoy at #3 or #4 and the best available Guard at either #35 or #67 will give us more value. We got a starting DT in the fourth round last year too. Sammie Lee Hill. We need a DT who can penetrate and provide a pass rush. McCoy is the man to do that.
Like I Said Above
You need a great offensive line first.

like moving Backus to OG is gonna work out?
This isn’t Madden.
His ratings don’t go up if you move him to a ‘lesser’ position.
Can he pull? Is he strong enough to block 350lbs DT’s?

It is a decent mock
Gresham was almost surely pegged by many as the Bengals 1st rounder. But with the unexpected death of Chris Henry, WR now becomes a major area of concern for my boys.

Doubt the Saints will go RB in the 1st
Pierre Thomas is the real deal and Mike Bell is one of the best #2s out there. Lynell Hamilton can develop into a really good bowling ball of a short yardage back if given time. They will either go OLB or DE, maybe an O-lineman.
"That Brees is a good quarterback." - Giants Free Safety Michael Johnson after a 48-27 Saints victory.
They may also consider future replacements for the Williams boys such as Rickey Sapp of Clemson or Jared Odrick from Penn State
How would Ricky Sapp replace one of the Williams wall? He is a DE/OLB not a DT.
Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.
maybe if he bulked up 100lbs?

I like the Bengals pick, becuse they were so desparate for a TE at the beggining of the year
They tried to trade for Martellus Bennet from the Cowboys, And this pick fills their need.
