Premier defensive tackle Gerald McCoy to enter draft
Gerald McCoy, perhaps the nation's best defensive tackle not named Ndamukong Suh, is leaving Oklahoma early and entering the NFL Draft.
McCoy made his decision earlier this season when he found out he'll have enough credits to graduate this semester. He'll receive his degree in human relations today.
"I loved my experience at OU and I'm going to miss it," McCoy said in a release. "I accomplished almost everything I wanted to get done here and it's been very positive with my teammates, the coaches, the fans, everyone."
A star since he arrived in Norman, McCoy routinely demands double teams and continues to make plays. He's a great penetrating defensive tackle and has started 39 consecutive games for the Sooners. In those games, he totaled 80 tackles, including 13.5 sacks and 32 tackles for loss. He also registered two fumbles caused, one fumble recovery, one interception and four pass deflections.
Considered by many a sure top 10 pick, some team is going to get a star with McCoy.
"Gerald is a great example of how to be a student-athlete," said Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. "He came here, took care of his academic responsibilities, invested himself in the lives of others and had a great career on the field. I've never been associated with a young man who was any more impressive than Gerald.
See our Scout's Notebook on McCoy from last month for more analysis on his abilities.

strictly a 4-3 tackle though right?
This is sort of a side question but are enough NFL teams running 3-4’s now that college players who fit that defense will start moving up draft boards as opposed to moving down?
I remember the Steelers always had the advantage of picking OLB’s to fit their system late in the draft because no one else could use those guys but I’m wondering if the DE/OLB combo and the 320+ DT’s will start moving up the boards as NFL defense’s try to get guys to fit such a niche defense.
Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
They already have been. See; Tyson Jackson

My beloved Bucs will not pass him up
That is what I was thinking prior to Sunday until the foolishly went out and won. Who has the tie-breaker if the Lions and Bucs end up with the same record?
It's a beautiful day in Tallahassee
Right now, the Lions based on playing the weaker schedule.
We in Detroit have assumed that Tampa would take Suh if you were ahead of us. We are also assuming [hoping] that the rams will go with a QB.
That’s why I said that I thought [hoped] McCoy would be a Lion. I am one of a minority, but apparently growing, of Lions fans who do not put an LT at the top of our board. I like Okung, but I don’t think he helps us as much as a penetrating DT would. We need Guards on the O line.

After the injurie(s) to the 70 million dollar man why wouldn't the pick be LT.
Okung?
True knowledge is knowing you know nothing!
Trade up for Berry Scot it's the move to make. "Who is Berry?"..............Here we go again!!
He'd look better in a Fins uniform

I don’t think he would fit in a 3-4

As Slim says McCoy seems to be slotted into a 4-3 as an under Tackle only.
For whatever reason, his skill set is not being projected to be 3-4 DE and definitely not a Nose Tackle.
The Lions run a 4-3 and have a large run stuffing DT [Hill] already so McCoy looks like a perfect fit. I am also assuming Suh will be gone before the Lions pick so McCoy will be available. If both McCoy and Suh are gone before the Lions. unlikely but possible, I guess we flip a coin between Okung, Berry, and Derrick Morgan.

he could play 3-4...
as long as that’s the team he goes to first.
If you come in and learn the 3-4 from the start, the type of athlete McCoy is, he’d probably be a good 3-4 DE.
Someone like Glenn Dorsey’s taking time to learn the 3-4 cuz he started off as a 4-3 DE in the NFL.

I don't disagree with what you are saying FB, but...........
all of the scouting sites I have read keep repeating that he is a 4-3 DT only. They don’t explain why he could not be effective as a 3-4 DE, they just say he cannot.
I have not seen enough of him, or know enough about what is required to have an opinion one way or another. I’ll go along with some of the more knowledgeable people on this one.

no doubt..
its just…I question all these sort.
How the hell can Suh be considered a prospect for a 4-3 or 3-4..and McCoy not?
They’re both basically the same size. Both very strong..athletic, stop the run..rush the passer.
Maybe its cuz in order to get his full potential..4-3 only. Tho, that would be the case with anyone wouldn’t it?
3-4 DE’s generally don’t do stuff that shows up on the ‘stat sheet’.

FB you should come on the Lions site again.
There are a few POD posters who are adamant that McCoy is undersized and weak. “A guaranteed bust” if I got that quote right. And yes they mean Gerald McCoy, not Colt.
They’re both basically the same size. Both very strong..athletic, stop the run..rush the passer.
They would go wild over your statement/quote.
Mccoy is more of an interior pass rusher and he wouldn’t do that in a 34

Should be intereting to see what
he and Suh do in the NFL.
Both are sure to be top 5 picks.
The history of top 5 DT’s is not good tho. Maybe they continue that trend? Maybe they buck that trend?
