My First Ever Mock- Round 1
Well I've commented on a couple of your drafts so I now lay myself out there for all to critique. In a fanpost I laid out my rules for drafting. Few would agree with my defense first outlook but I believe that it is easier to build a winning defense than offense. Therefore bad teams should get as good on defense as fast as possible. For instance this year Cleveland has 11 picks. I would spend 8 of those trying to build a quality defense. Its not a theory everyone agrees with. I understand the offensive argument I respect the other view.
I simply don't agree with it. Anyway here goes:
As a predicate I will say that I expect Carolina, Buffalo, Oakland and Washington to be looking to trading up with the Rams and Browns for Clausen and Bradford. But this draft is written as if no trades come along.
1. Bucs - Ndamukong Suh DL. Best Player period. Enough said.
2. Rams -Russell Okung OL. The Rams have passed on the last 4 Franchise Guys. Why not wait one more year and get Locker under a Rookie Cap. Trade down for a lot of picks or take the absolute sure thing OT lineman in the draft. Someday you have to protect a QB. Get a good defense with the rest of the draft.
3. Lions -Gerald McCoy DT McCoy is the best DT in the draft. Lions need a DT. I have no issue with Berry here but this is the best defensive line player available.
4. Browns - Jimmy Clausen QB. Windy stadiums need a strong arm. Quinn proved he was terrible against Pittsburgh. Dump two QB salaries and move on. You have 10 more picks to build a defense.
5. Chiefs -Eric Berry. A #5 pick can't pass on the #5 talent in the whole draft. Yes, KC has other needs too but this kind of Safety is once a decade.
6. Redskins - Sam Bradford QB. A new GM. New head coach ( Shanahan is the next coach). Mike Shanahan moved up to take Cutler over Jason Campbell when he was in Denver. Bradford fits his style of Jake Plummer or Cutler. Campbell is spoiled goods and needs new surroundings to be able to flourish. If not a QB then the Skins start with OT and take Bruce Campbell
7. Raiders - Ryan Mallett QB. This sophomore is a project. He might be a spoiled kid who transferred from Michigan to Arkansas because he couldn't start at Michigan. He might be the next Big Armed QB of the National Football League. Yeah- Al Davis will take a chance. If not he will take a chance on some other project.
8. Bills - Bruce Campbell OT- At least the Bills get to fill a need since a QB wasn't available. This is the 2nd best OT in the draft. A good Value here.
9. Broncos - Rolando McClain ILB. This looks like a Great pick for the Broncos. A multi-use linebacker for Josh McDaniels to use in a 3-4.
10. Seahawks - Joe Haden CB.- The Seahawks have needs. All are equal. I'm giving them the best player available. Every team needs a great cornerback
11. 49ers - Taylor Mays S. I can see C.J.Spiller here as well. However I think Mike Singeltary will go with defense.
12. Steelers - Earl Thomas S. The old men of the Steelers backfield need new blood to help Troy. This is the best safety left and a very good one. I wouldn't be shocked with the first OLB being taken here.
13. Falcons -Donnavan Warren. CB.- There are several value picks here that the Falcons might want. Morgan DE, Spiller RB, Bryant WR. All are good values but injuries will necessitate them getting a #1 type corner.
14. Titans -.Raz-I Dowling CB. Ditto for the Titans. Their secondary is aging fast.
15. Texans - Dez Bryant WR. Yes they could use another DE but really, Johnson and Bryant on the corners. I want to see that.
16. 49ers - Brian Bulaga OL. This team needs a quality OT. If Bulaga doesn't declare (he will) Anthony Davis or Trent Williams are the next best available. They need one OT out of this draft.
17. Jaguars - CJ Spillers RB. No one will buy a ticket if they pass on a guy this good to compliment their run game. This team is young on the lines but can help shore it up later.
18. Jets - Derrick Morgan DE. Carlos Dunlap and Jerry Hughes are also available at this position along with several good linebackers. I see this high motor going to a Rex Ryan kind of team.
19. Giants -Anthony Davis OT. This local Rutgers product is the basis of a reborn Giant team. I also like a linebacker here but just can't pass on this good an OT.
20. Ravens - Brandon LaFell WR. . I know a great TE is available but how can you go wrong with this talent.
21. Dolphins - Dan Williams NT.- Parcels will not take a chance this early on a WR. Williams is an every down NT,
22. Cowboys -Trent Williams OT Dallas has their skill people in place but anything that improves their run game is sorely needed for a true playoff run.
23. Cardinals -Jerry Hughes LB. Yes the Cards need an OT. But can they pass on this huge help for their defense.
24. Seahawks -Charles Brown OT. I'm not crazy about this pick but they need some help on the O-Line in all phases.
25. Patriots -Cory Whooten DE. The Pats are very happy to spend a first round pick on this talent. Hes a Pat kind of guy.
26. Packers - Brandon Spikes DE. I know the Pack needs an OT but I don't see another first rounder available. This guy could help in the new 3-4 defense.
27. Eagles - Carlos Dunlap LB. I think this helps solidify a good defense for years
28. Bengals - Mike Iupati OG The Bengals O-Line is young and still needs help. This is a value they didn't expect.
29. Chargers - Terrance Cody NT. Contract issues will force the Chargers to take a nose tackle over all other needs.
30. Vikings -Sean Witherspoon OLB Its a toss up with Travis Lewis or Sean Witherspoon. Whichever the Vikes have available these are the only two value picks left between the safeties, CBs, and QB,s.
31. Colts - Greg Hardy DE. The colts know how to draft for the future. They will need Hardy to keep leading the division.
32. Saints - Travis Lewis OLB. The Saints will take whichever DE the Vikings pass on. A good need for their defense.

Spikes or Hughes?
The players rated from 18-28 are really hard to separate in my opinion. I just think the Tuna will go with a lineman.

As a die-hard
we have a very young and very good 4 man DE rotation. Solili age 25 is starting since Fergy went down but even b4 fergs injury getting 48% of NT snaps. I cant see Parcells draftying a part-timer(especially since fergy says he would like to come back one more year as a insurance policy if needed)when we have 32 and 36 year old starting OLBers and a very weak ILBer core. Crowder is a solid complimentry IL:B but needs a stud next ti him. Akin Ayodele is going to be 31 and the weakest link on defense.

I like Anthony Davis to the Giants.
Him and Will Beatty would be the Giants starting OT’s for the next 10 years (hopefully..stay healthy)
I gotta say..Derrick Morgan, if he fell to the Giants would be a nice pick. I don’t think he fits the Jets either, and they’d probably be better off getting some weapons for Sanchez.
..meaning if the draft goes this way, Morgan falls to the Giants (and the Jets probably would get Lafell or Damian Williams).

I agree..
Tho..I’d also agree on Morgan too :)
Both aren’t getting the due they deserve.
Davis is a mauler..and probably light on his feet enough to be a LT.
Morgan…probably the bets pass rusher in the draft

llv, Did you reverse the Packers and Eagles picks?
I think it makes more sense if the Packers take Dunlap [although I am not sure anyone takes him in the first round] and the Eagles take Spikes. You have their positions wrong so I am thinking you made an error.
I don’t know the Rams that well but they drafted Jason Smith to be their LT, I don’t think they will take another LT this year. Also, it looks like they are now in line for the #1 pick and Detroit may get the #2.
2 LT's
To be honest I didn’t think of it as 2 LTs. I looked at these two players as bookend tackles for the next decade. Maybe its to much to pay for an O-Line but would you pass on Okung for Berry? Maybe.
The more I apply this logic the more I find myself breaking my own drafting rules and have St. Louis select a QB.

What do you think of Morgan Burnett from Georgia Tech. Jags could use him.

IMO
I think Burnett is better.

Actually
I really like the Spiller pick. It could be possible depending on what type of offense the Jags want going forward. There had been signs of going more pass based, but staying ball control is most likely now. Either way really, Spiller could be immensely helpful. I’ve said before we need more playmakers; could use him in the passing game more than the running game with Jones-Drew.
We have a need at safety, and the day Reggie Nelson is cut/traded is the day this team gets a step better. But we have a new lineup we are trying out, which I think will prove to be a solution.

ok
You called mallet a spoiled kid that couldnt start at Michigan. That is not the case. If Carr stayed he would have been the starter. Rich Rod came and Mallett does not fit a spread offense at all. You have not a clue what you are talking about with this situation.
You called McCoy the best DT in the draft but you also called Suh the best blayer in the draft. What the hell position does Suh play?
Next, you said Bradford is similar to Cutler and Plummer. Please tell me how…the last thing Bradford is, is a gunslinger.
Then you have Dunlap going in round one. There is no way he goes in round one after being exposed as lazy and a guy that takes plays off and getting a DUI.
The " It" Factor
I posted a fan post entitled “How to Evaluate a Quarterback”. In that I describe the difficulty in analyzing the “it” factor. I stated Mallet might be a spoiled brat. He might not be. You could be correct that he is a fine person with NFL capabilities. All I know is that he is young, with limited starts, and a question mark on his decision to transfer. It could very well be that after the combine all teams agree he is a top 10 selection.
I really believe Mike Shanahan will find Bradford to his liking. His arm is fairly strong and he is accurate. You are probably right that my description of him as a gunslinger was incorrect but he can throw downfield which Mike likes alot.
by lifelongvike on Dec 21, 2009 7:58 AM EST up reply actions
There isn’t a question mark by his decision to transfer. He transfered because he wasn’t the QB for Rodriguez. Rodriguez offense needs a Pat White-type QB, and Mallet is the opposite

this is what i was saying but this guy says he was the spoiled kid that couldnt start at michigan…..not the case at all
Not a fair quote
Please read my observations. He might be a spoiled brat. He might Not be. He is a college student. He chose a scholarship. He left the school for personal gain. I’m not saying he is bad or wrong. I’m just saying that this is the type of issues that the NFL put into their “it factor” analysis. I did mock him in the top 10. That’s pretty high don’t you think?
by lifelongvike on Dec 22, 2009 9:10 AM EST up reply actions
He left the school for personal gain
What was he supposed to do switch to TE?
Normally I don’t like when players transfer but when it is to be closer to an ill family member (Broderick Green USC to Arkansas) or when that school totally switches offenses that would require you to switch positions (especially when you were highly highly recruited to play that position) then I don’t have a problem with that.
Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.
by tj.hendricks on Dec 22, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions
I don't have a problem either
I’m simply pointing out why NFL scouts have a question about Mallet’s “it factor”.
If he drops to the 2nd round (as some pundits think) then we will know all teams have questions. Of course if the Vikings pass on him I will be furious.

Freeney is signed through 2012, Mathis through 2011
both are likely to make the Pro Bowl again this year.
Pick is too far in the future.
Needs: OT and (depending on Free Agency MLB/S)
Upgradable: G, DT, LB, Returner
No Room QB, RB, WR, TE, DE, CB, S (if both Bethea and Bullitt are back)
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
This one confuses me
If you watched any of the Colts-Jaguars game then you can see what kind of an impact Freeney and Mathis can make, and you can see what happens when they’re not out there. This defense relies completely on the pass rush and I attribute much of the Colts’ postseason disappointments on these guys being hurt. So I didn’t hate this pick, even though I know nothing about Hardy. If Polian did pick a DE in the first, I would trust his judgment completely.
I know this makes little sense, to draft a guy that wouldn’t start, but there’s no more important position on the defensive side of the ball. Is it possible to draft an end and use him as a weakside linebacker, so he can start, while grooming him to be the future pass rush at end?
The thing that really confuses me though is the way they cut Marcus Howard this year. Why? If they cut a guy w/that kind of potential in our system then I doubt they’re going to draft a DE first. I still think something else must have been going on w/Howard for them to cut him – off the field issues or something.
I could see a run end/pass tackle taken early
but any pass rushers will be straight backups. They aren’t going to take Freeney or Mathis off the field in pass rushing situations.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

Nice mock.
I like the mocks that are a little unconventional because that is how every draft turns out anyway. Here are my thoughts.
1. I don’t think the Rams would take another Left Tackle at #2. They just took one with the last draft. It is doubtful one of the 2nd overall picks will slide to right tackle. Also, if they don’t go QB, I would have to think they grab Berry or McCoy.
2. If Mallet declares he would literally have to light up the combine and his pro day to come close to the top ten. I can definitely see the Raiders being the team to gamble though. We know one thing for sure, Mallet, right now, is better than Jemarcus the Hutt.
This might be a good pick on your part.
3. As a die-hard fan of the Broncos, who lost to the Raiders, I was at first sure we would take a defensive player in the draft. Now I am starting to entertain the idea that we might address the offensive side of the ball in some capacity. Maybe not the first round, but who knows?
Mallett
I think if he declares he will go higher than Bradford, and probably in the top 15 if not the top 10.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.

Thanks
for the comments. By the way swg77 I used your mock for my form. Josh McDaniels took over an awful defense and had to use his first draft on offense more than he wanted. I see this year being his defensive year. Unless a QB falls to them that they love or they reach to get one. But New England trained coaches don’t reach.

2. Why would he have to light up the combine to come close to the top 10? I think if he has an okay combine he still goes in the top 10 because scouts mostly look at tools

To few snaps
It wasn’t to long ago that juniors were considered risky for the NFL. Top 10 QBs are very expensive. I imagine as a redshirt sophomore he will need to show something quite promising. Next year everyone figures there will be a rookie salary cap.
by lifelongvike on Dec 21, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions
That didn’t effect Sanchez’s stock much.
by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 21, 2009 4:45 PM EST up reply actions
Correct
The last couple of years has shown a surge in younger QBs. But Sanchez had to perform well at the combine and workouts to earn a high pick. Remember, there were teams that passed on him mostly because of his lack of experience. The jets have a fine looking rookie making many rookie mistakes. The story is yet to be written as to him being a “Franchise” QB. Personally, I think he has all the tools. Just little experience. Mallet will have trouble if he is started his first year also. Hell, Almost every QB has trouble the first year.

Love the idea that Mount Cody goes to my Chargers
but I don’t see it happening. He probably won’t fall to the bottom of the first, and management has faith in Vaughn Martin (our 340 lb. Rastawalrus of a 4th rounder from last year) to be our nose tackle of the future.
Look for the Bolts to address RB issues (could be Ingram, Gerhart, Jonathan Dwyer, or even the guy from Fresno State whose name escapes me…) or possibly a wide reciever. Doubt it though, because even if Malcom Floyd walks (Jackson will be resigned, hell or high water) there are a few guys on the roster who could start immediately.

I don't disagree
I really wanted to give SD a running back. When I did the draft it was so hard to find a true first round pick except Spillers. And then there was Cody still available. There are really good backs this year but most will be available in rounds 2-3. I still can’t believe that SD passed on Bennie Wells last year. Makes me believe they won’t use a first rounder this year. Jonathan Dwyer is kind of a SD back and a possible first round. Mathews from Fdresno is also there kind of runner.

llv did you see my post above about Spikes and Dunlap?
Could you correct it to clarify the picks for us?
Yes
You are correct in pointing out my reversal of these two players position. I did flip those players to those two teams. Both of these players have some risk to them but both are very talented. Everyone believes the Pack will go OT but I don’t think they will reach for one. I think they could use another DE. The Eagles have the luxury of picking whichever value pick is there. I think Spikes could be a big winner for them. But I love the way the Eagles draft so whoever they pick I trust them more than me.
by lifelongvike on Dec 22, 2009 9:32 AM EST up reply actions
Agreed on running back
If Martin truly is your future NT then Cody would not be the best choice. Yes you need a future running back. I just can’t see a good value in the first round. I wouldn’t be surprised if they selected more than one in the later rounds. If they don’t need Cody then Witherspoon to the Cargers and Cody to the Vikings.

He's a DE.
More like an Osi Umenyiora type. Osi would not be good in a 3-4.
Attitude is one thing…size and athleticism are another.
The Jets would probably be best suited to not draft defense, at leas in the first couple rounds.
If they need D, its for a few 3-4 DE’s and a NT maybe.
Derrick Morgan is 6"4 270. And all I see about him just says you gotta keep him as an edge rusher.

There’s others who are better suited for OLB out there anyway..like Jerry Hughes
Also…Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas say…they don’t need to draft another OLB…not in the first round at least.
The Jets need weapons for their QB.
I’m thinking Golden Tate would be perfect fit. A WR that knows how to get open.

I wouldn’t mind Hughes falling to the Vikes. It’s been interesting doing a mock because you realize that so many good players are so close in talent. I mean really. Wow
this is the first Mock that I’ve seen that actually had a Chiefs pick right. Rec’d
The Chiefs do have many needs..and among those needs is a defensive playmaker. Also among those needs is a safety. Knock out 2 birds with 1 stone and draft Eric Berry.
The Bengals...
won’t take a G with their first round pick because they value that position too low. Yes they require a new RG but they won’t take one untill the later rounds because that is how their O-line coach prefers it. He likes his linemen hungry and underrated. Which is why we have one of the youngest (and lowest drafted) o-lines in the league. He also won’t draft a G because his philosophy is that his guards must be converted tackled because in passing downs you must have four tackles and one centre to survive.
The Bengals are a good but not great team and lack the playmakers (on both sides of the ball) to really challenge the top teams so that is where their choice will lie. If there is a D or O player who is a difference maker they will take them. That may be S or a RB, WR or DE. But whoever it is, it will be a playmaker and not a o-linemen
by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 24, 2009 7:21 PM EST reply actions
Mike Brown doesn’t like taking WRs under 6ft so i couldn’t see him picking him with their first round pick (one of the reasons the Bengals didn’t take DeSean Jackson was his height… worked well on that occasion didn’t it). I think Tate would be a good addition but i would be skeptical about the Bengals taking him with their first pick. Not beyond the realm of possibilty but not likely.
If i were the GM i think i would be in favour of making that pick…. but thinking about what the Bengals would do in the proposed situation is quite hard to imagine. I think Greg Hardy could be a possible pick – though that depends on how well they think he could do against the run because he’d back-up Geathers at LE.
by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 25, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions
You could be right about RB
Obviously I gave you the best Guard in the draft. A good value at #28 I think. But your point of a value RB is sure a good one. Jonathan Dwyer is still on the board. Fits the Bengals well.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
