Positional Outlook on The Draft

How are all of my Friends doing? I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Im sure your following days will be filled with playing your new gameboy advance. JK Anyways, This is my opinion on the best Situational players in the draft. Best Run Stopper, Coverage Guy, Route Runner, All Purpose Back, Big Play Threat, Bruiser, Pass Blocker, Run Blocker, And So On. Let me know what you think and remenber, were all best buds on here. Only players in the first 2 rounds, Chime in if I miss someone or you have another category. More after the Hump!

Star-divide

Best Run Stopper- This is easy. Terrence Cody is a man-beast. If he was a little faster, He might be a top 10 pick for sure. I think Pioli could take him, will see. He is big and physical and keeps Alabama's run defense near the top of the FBS every year.

Best Pass Rusher- This one is hard. I want to give it to Hughes but Morgan has impressed this year. I never really respected him at the beginning of the college football season. I had my reasons, He only had 7 sacks last year. I know you might say 7 sacks is pretty good but, He was on a D Line that sent the other 3 players to the pros. He proved me wrong with his versatility, Derrick Morgans gets the crown.

Best 3-4 prospect- Suh reminds me of Seymour. I know he is 3 inches shorter but he matches him in upper body strength. The way he pushes people around is awesome and this is coming from a Mizzou fan. Suh will be pretty impressive for whatever team he plays for.

Best Coverage DB- Eric Berry for sure, QBs just dont test him. Ive heard alot about him staying in school for his senior year. This would be an all time mistake. He cant improve his stock and has a chance to be the highest safety drafted since Turner. The name speaks for itself, He has pure instincts.

Best Tackler- McClain Moving On.

Best Route Runner- Damian Williams for sure gets this nod. It isnt just me either, Alot of scouts say he is already better then alot of pros. I would love it if he fell to the 2nd round and my Chiefs got him. He is smart, quick and has got sure-hands.

Best Slot WR- To me it is Tate. Tate may not be a blazer but he is very quick. He could play slot or line up outside the numbers.

Best Possession WR- Dez

Best Big Play Threat- CJ Spiller is by far the best. Unless you've lived under a rock, I know you agree.

Best Bruiser- Anthony Dixon is one of my favorites, Ive seen him punish people, but this title has to go to Toby G. He is huge.

Best All-purpose back- This could actually go to Spiller, but Will mix it up and give it to Best. He is just as dynamic of a player to me.

Most Accurate QB- Same Bradford is stupid accurate. I hate him so much, He hardly missed anyone. I know you TX homers will say McCoy is, but I had an unwritten rule that you had to throw the ball further then 20 yds atleast twice in one game.

Best Running QB- Teebow sucks.

Most Balanced QB- Jimmy Clausen has been pretty impressive. He has a strong arm and he is pretty accurate. He also is a good decision maker. I think he is alot better prospect then Quinn was. I love Brady Quinn, Only for his one liners "Now Im Done"

Strongest Arm- Ryan Mallett would be here if he comes out, but since we dont know, it goes to Snead.

Best Run Blocking OT- Anthony Davis is just a beast in the run game. This is a hard one though. I have to give it to him.

Best Pass Blocker- Russell O Kung for sure. I have had the liberty of watching him play against MU the last 2 years in person. He is better then any OT that came out last year to me but Ive heard people say different. I never understood the talk of a weak tackle class.

Best TE- Gresham.

Best all around OT- Okung.

Best Defensive Player- It has to be Suh.

Best Offensive Player- This is a tuff one, So it goes to Spiller.

If it's deemed spam, it gets deleted.

No you dont Slim

Seriouslly, I vow never to reply to you until I see a comment more then 2 sentences, Im starting to think your young. Im not trying to be mean but Why do you always type one sentence?

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 3:59 AM EST up reply actions

Wow. What is wrong with you. I did have that many comments and now I have more. And just because I wright that in one sentence you think I’m retarded or something? What do you want me to show you every one of them or something?

by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 29, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Confusing

Dar was talking about most comments in a single thread – RSS was talking about most comments overall. Hug and make up.

Oh. Ok. He didn’t specify. I still don’t get what is the matter with this guy.

by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 29, 2009 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

HOW WAS THAT MEAN?

Come on, Really? You always reply in one short sentence, Never backing anything up, just talking. I never said your retarded because of it. If you cant see that I was being facetious then something is wrong with you. I was just wondering why you only type one sentence. Its ridiculous, Its just ridiculous. If I hurt your feelings then you should read the post again, It wasnt disrespectful at all.

Also

You dont get whats wrong with me? Just as many people would say the same thing about you.

Dez Bryant better go in the top 10 if he's a "possesion WR"

Cuz he’s a big play threat too.

Of course he is

Dwayne Bowe was a deep threat in college too but isnt fast enough in the pros. But Bryant is faster so we will see.

Suh Vs QBs

Taking for granted that franchise QBs are only available on average of 1-2 per year would you project Suh being taken at the #1 pick instead of a QB?

Nice work on your list of positional players. I like Hughes over Morgan but its so close.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Dec 28, 2009 10:09 AM EST reply actions

If I had the number 1 pick

I would take Suh, I dont think a franchise QB is in this draft, atleast not a sure fire like Matt Ryan. Clausen could end up a franchise guy (When I say Franchise I mean 8-10 yr starter). Other then that, there are a couple guys that can come in and sit for a couple years and be good.

by darwithabar on Dec 28, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Some ppl doubted Ryan

People will always doubt

but most of the league thought he was a sure fire starter. Of course though, There is always doubt. People doubted Peyton Manning too. They said he was getting drafted high because of his father.

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 3:40 AM EST up reply actions

Why don’t you get mad at him for only typing one sentence?

For Best All Purpose Back

I would argue Jonathan Dwyer. Runs inside great, outside great, pitchman he’s great, great blocker in both pass blocking and run blocking, and catches the ball pretty well as well when it was thrown to him. Spiller isn’t the best inside runner, and Best doesn’t make a living there.

by Bestjagfan on Dec 28, 2009 11:48 AM EST reply actions

I have to say No to that

I barely ever see Dwyer catch the ball out of the back feild. Also, Dont take this the wrong way, but he isnt the very best in any of those categories. No way he has caught enough passes out of the back feild to be considered better then Best. He has only caught 13 passes since 2007 and only 3 or 4 this year. Best has more TD catches then Dwyer has catches actually. Im not sure I see the logic. Sure he runs between the tackles, but Best doess too. You cant give best all purose to a guy who has only caught 4 passes all year.

by darwithabar on Dec 28, 2009 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

You Put

All your emphasis of a complete back on ability to catch passes? First of all Dwyer plays in a flexbone triple option system, a system that rarely throws the ball, much less to the halfback(Dwyer is actually a fullback in the flexbone.) So he doesn’t exactly get the opportunities to catch passes.

Dwyer is a nice outside runner with good lateral speed and is fast in the open field. Yes, Best has much better acceleration and shiftiness. But you aren’t catching either guy in the open field from behind.

Inside its Dwyer by far. Best doesn’t run with power inside. He runs through massive holes created by Cals good offensive line. If you can find me a highlight anywhere of Best running someone over or creating contact for that matter, let me see it. Dwyer on the other hand busts chins when going up the middle.

Blocking is again no comparison. Not only is Dwyer a better pass blocker(G Tech goes downfield when they pass, and Dwyer often comes off playaction to throw blocks) but he is a run blocker as well. If he is a feature back in the NFL he may not need to use this on a regular basis, but it still speaks volumes about his versatility. Best can pass block okay, but it isn’t great and his technique is lacking

by Bestjagfan on Dec 28, 2009 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

Best is a very above average pass blocker

Dwyer is a little better from what ive seen but you dont see him pass block as much as best. All Purpose back does it all, not just a couple things good. Best does everything. Sure Dwyer runs up the middle better and blocks better. I never said he didnt. But he isnt a better all purpose back then Best is.

Also, before you say Best doesnt run up the middle know your facts. He averages 5 ypc in the middle. Also, You talk about that wishbone option, That only enhances numbers. We dont know how dwyer will do in a pro style, Im not saying he wont do good, just saying. Best is the better AP back no doubt, He has more catches then Dwyer and he missed 3 games. Dwyer is good, but Best is the better pass catcher and all around player.

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 3:47 AM EST up reply actions

I had to give it to either Best or Spiller

I only gave it to Best because he runs up the middle better then Spiller and he pass blocks better.

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 3:52 AM EST up reply actions

Best

May average a pretty 5 yards per carry up the middle, but he doesn’t run with power up the middle. He runs up big holes and takes them long ways which ups his average. Like I said, find me one highlight of Best running somebody over.

If your trying to argue that Dwyer is a bruiser, then I disagree

If your argueing he is more of a bruiser then Best, I would agree. If your arguing that he is a better all around player, I disagree.

Now, They’re different types of backs. Ive watched film on both, Every long run Dwyer has was broken open by his o line and the mis direction. Javid Best has a 97 yd run where the line absolutely collapses and he is force to dance around to make the run. They are two different types of backs. Dywer is a mix type player, While Best is an all purpose back.

About the whole O Line thing, GT and Cal have pretty comparable O Lines. You say that Best runs thru gaping holes which is probably true, but Dwyer does the same. Also, Dwyer has the benifit of that offense. The misdirectoion busts Dwyer wide open for 40 yard runs where he doesnt get touched. They’re both good players and both will get picked in the 1st or 2nd round. Just because Dwyer is the stronger player doesnt mean he is the better All Purpose back.

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Best dances, Dwyer runs downhill. End of story. But Dwyer can hit a seam and be gone just like Best can. Not as good as Best acceleration wise, but still at the top of the draft class. Here is a nice vid of Dwyer that sums up my entire argument all in one package. Watch the whole thing. 1:30 has a nice catch downfield. He breaks tackles and hits seams and is gone depending on the situation. Dwyer vid.

by Bestjagfan on Dec 30, 2009 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

Dwyer does run downhill better. Ive never once argued that. To argue that Best runs downhill better is foolish. Also, To argue he is a better all purpose back then Best or Spiller is also foolish though. He might be, but there is no proof to make that judgement on.

Also, Nice vid. If you want to argue that Dwyer is a stud, Your talking to the wrong guy. We would just constantly agree on how bad ass he is. He just does everything above average though. He is a major athlete that is good at everything, but he isnt the best at anything. He isnt the fastest (Spiller), He isnt the strongest(Toby G) and he isnt the most elusive(Best). Best got the call because he can do everything. Dwyer might be able to do it all but we havent seen him catch at all but 3 times. Also, Dont discount Best’s strength. He is deceptivly strong. Dwyer has the chance to be an MJD type back (If he has hands like MJD, Doubtful) while Best has a shot to be like Tomlinson. Tomlinson is the better All Purpose back but that doesnt mean MJD isnt a bad ass. You know what I Mean?

by darwithabar on Dec 30, 2009 4:00 AM EST up reply actions

I Hear You

Like I said they are different backs. It’ll be interesting to see if either can become major contributers in their rookie seasons.

by Bestjagfan on Dec 30, 2009 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldnt be surprised if they both did

Seems like Dwyer would have more of a role as a rookie, I doubt a coach would want Best in there fast w/ the injuries.

by darwithabar on Dec 31, 2009 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

Best Offensive Player

Why did you say Spiller? I’m not saying it’s a bad call because Spiller’s upside is off the charts, but over someone like Clausen & Mallett, or even Bryant. Can you please explain

Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010

by Gobroks on Dec 28, 2009 9:26 PM EST reply actions

Sure thing

Honestly it could go either way, Spiller had 1200 rushing yards, around 600 receiving, and a total of 21 TDs. Clausen and Mallet are up there with them but Spiller just had the more impressive season to me, Im not even throwing in kick returns because that would just be unfair. Clausen and Spiller were really the two I had to chose from though.

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 3:51 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks

I like Spiller too, but I was a bit surprised when you chose a guy that’s probably a mid 1st round pick over a potential #1 pick. I like the change of pace though, and I think Clausen is overrated.

What makes him overrated?

by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 29, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe overrated is too strong

But I’d say at best he’s the 3rd best player in the draft (behind Suh & Berry) and the way people are talking him up is too much. It’s not as bad as Brady Quinn was though.

You never know

Unfortunatly, Most of us dont get enough film on him. I would take him over Cassell though.

by darwithabar on Dec 31, 2009 2:26 AM EST up reply actions

Just because Clausen will go in the top 10 doesnt mean he is one of the ten best players

QB are over-valued pretty bad. I wouldnt go as far as to say he is over-rated, He is just the best QB coming out this year.

This may be an exagerated example, but a Punter for instance. If a punter was the best player at his posistion by far, you wouldnt take him over the 2nd best player at his pos. if he was a DT. I know thats far out there, but I think something similar happens with SS, FS, ILB, RB, and C/G.

by darwithabar on Dec 29, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

Clausen

Is underrated.

I wouldnt say that

How could he be when he is hyped up so much. He isnt overrated by everyone, but by ND fans he is.

by darwithabar on Dec 30, 2009 4:02 AM EST up reply actions

He's

Hyped up on blogs like this, but other than that no one mentions him. I think he is the best quarterback coming out this year without a doubt, and could have a better career than Stafford or Sanchez of last year.

by Bestjagfan on Dec 30, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

He is hyped up by alot of draft scouts

McShay and Kipers pathatic asses hype him up. I wouldnt want him over Mallett. I doubt he does as good as Staford has done this year but I could see Sanchez. Youll see when Snead goes pro who the better QB is.

by darwithabar on Dec 31, 2009 2:28 AM EST up reply actions

What impressed me about Clausen

was during the end of the season, when he threw one of his few picks (he only had 4, I think) there was some miscommunication between him and Floyd. So he threw it to Floyd on the goalline and Floyd was blocking because he thought they were running, and the ball hit Floyd in the back directly between the numbers. It bounced up, of course (luck of the irish?) and got picked off, but he threw a rocket and seriously, they showed the slow-mo, and it hit him directly between the numbers. Even his interceptions are accurate.

by Naptime! on Dec 31, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think your Bias does make you look at him different

Ive seen him have games where he was dead on and others where he was low all day. I think abother year would do him good.

by darwithabar on Jan 1, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Truly

I’ve never once said I think Clausen is a sure thing or that he’s the best QB in the draft. I really don’t know what to think about Clausen. Certain times I loved him and had a lot of faith in him, other times he left me scratching my head. He’s cocky, has a temper, and has all of the tools to succeed at the next level, just like Ryan Leaf did. I hope it doesn’t happen that way, I really don’t know. I was just saying that at times, his accuracy was ridiculous it was so good.

by Naptime! on Jan 1, 2010 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

I hear you

I do think, given the right team, he could be good. But he has alot of work to do.

by darwithabar on Jan 2, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

His worst game was against Purdue because he was hurt and had to come out at halftime. Then he came back and led a game winning drive with a TD throw.

He doesn’t have any more bad games.

by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 3, 2010 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

McShay said he is a 2nd rounder.

by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 3, 2010 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

McShay also said Anthony Davis #3 overall to the Chiefs. Sometimes I wonder if that guys is on something.

Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.

by tj.hendricks on Jan 3, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Unfair???
Im not even throwing in kick returns because that would just be unfair.

How is it unfair to count the offensive contributions from a player when evaluating the “best offensive player”? If you mean those contributions push Spiller way past the competition then I agree.
