Philadelphia Eagles team needs

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are a very strong team and are hoping for a long run in the playoffs. However, every team has needs. So let’s discuss my thoughts on the needs of the Eagles.

1. Linebacker

- The injury to Stewart Bradley left a gaping hole in the middle which has caused issues for this Eagles team. They also need to replace Chris Gocong/ Moise Fokou at the strong side linebacker position. The linebacker position is a very important part of the blitzing Eagles defense. If you recall they spent a lot of money to bring Dhani Jones in to help cover backs and tight ends. Bradley can play the strong side linebacker position so maybe drafting a middle linebacker is the right move.

2. Cornerback

- Both Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown are pro bowl caliber cornerbacks. However there is some depth issues with this position. And just because Brown has been quite during the season doesn’t mean he is happy with his contract. There is a strong possibility that he is moved in the offseason.

3. Safety

- Quintin Mikell is a really good safety but there are question marks at the other safety position. Sean Jones has done a nice job but he is a free agent at the end of the season. They have Macho Harris who they drafted last season, but is he capable of being a major contributor?

Other needs

Other needs would include Offensive Line positions, and even possibly Defensive End.

Offensive line is a serious area of need. The Andrews brothers can’t be counted on, Jamal Jackson the starting center has just torn his ACL and will likely not be fully healthy next season and while Winston Justice has been a huge pleasant surprize, he isn’t at the elite level, and he was supposed to be the backup, so even if they want him to stay as the starter they’ll need to add some depth behind him. So in other words the Eagles will be looking to address C, RG, and RT in the offseason.

As for defensive end, this is a much less pressing need, but the search for a consistant end opposite of Trent Cole continues. There are some decent guys on the team now, but Howard is getting up there in years, and even Parker isn’t that young anymore. Abrimiri (I can’t spell this name) can’t stay healthy, and Clemons and Babin seem to be viewed by the coaching staff as situational pass rushers.

The bottom line is I believe OL would be number one on the needs list, then linebacker, then saftey, then corner and DE.

OLB or DE

The Eagles will be looking to crank up their pass rush and speed around the outside with their first pick or two in 2010. That said, they always seem to take the best player available almost regardless of position and clearly have no problem trading down when they don’t see the right value player for the pick #.
In the mocks that I’ve gone through so far it seems like in round 1 the Eagles could be targeting Sean Weatherspoon from Mizzou or Carlos Dunlap from UF. If for some reason Haden falls to them I could see them snapping him up though. Maybe we can hope he gets caught with some CDS ala fellow UF alum Harvin and slides the same way. Would that be wrong?

my friend...

I thank you for doing this report. I disagree with some of it, but well done nontheless.

First off, our coaching staff seems to really like Moise Fokou at SLB. Not only that, but they LOVED Stewart Bradley at MLB. He was, and is, (as all reports are that he is recovering well) perfectly suited as the MLB in our scheme. LB is not our top need. I would say, if they find a guy in the 3rd/4th round who is capable of playing MLB and SLB, they would take ’em for depth. A guy like Daryl Washington from TCU, for example.

Secondly, we need another CB. Our depth is fine, but our FO always wants to be ahead of schedule on these kinds of things. We will use a 2nd/3rd rounder on a CB to be groomed as Sheldon Brown’s successor.

Thirdly, you underestimate Macho Harris. He is the future at FS for this team. Another guy who the coaches absolutely love. He is still making the transition from CB to FS, but he will be a good one. Not a top need. Maybe a 5/6th round need.

Fourthly, you forgot our biggest need, DE. We need a force opposite of Trent Cole. Juqua is getting older, and even though he has 7 sacks, the majority of them are just from being singled against because Trent requires a double team. If we can trade up for Derrick Morgan, we will.

And lastly, you neglect the potential for change on the offensive line. Now that Jamaal Jackson is injured for a year, I have no idea what is gonna happen. Will Mike McGlynn stand up at C if Nick Cole leaves in free agency (if he will be eligable…if there is a new CBA…so many question marks…)??? Anyway, we also have to see what the deal with the Brothers Andrews is at year’s end. I still have hope for them, but many do not. If the team doesn’t, Mike Iupati would look real good in midnight green…

But thanks for the work.

As a huge eagles fan, I can tell you that our biggest need is FAR from being linebacker. Sure, we have had major injuries this year at the position, but our backups have done a servicable job. With Stew returning next year, we have a monster in the middle, with trott possibly returning to back him up (hes done a servicable job this year in the run game once he got back in shape) and we will have Spoon and Akeem on the outside, both being above average starters (Akeem is up and coming, hes a fast, athletic backer, exactly what we look for in our OLBs). Once Omar Gaither comes back, hes an super-sub, capable for filling in on every LB spot. Tracy White has done pretty good subbing in, and Fokou and Gocong will be excellent backups/Special teamers for the OLBs.

That being said, I think we draft a DE or OL in the first round, pick up a Safety in the 2nd and adress linebacker later on, if at all.

I think you hit the nail right on the head

I would love to see them grab Brandon Spikes in the first who reminds me of trotter in his prime and move big stew to the outside. strongside is stew’s natural position and i think he would be great there. If we dont go LB in the first I think we have to go DE and get a beast opposite of cole. Derrick Morgan is the ideal guy for that spot but thats a little unrealistic at this point but hey, you never know. The QB cant get the ball to the open TE if he’s got two guys at DE that are bringing heat and putting him on his back.

Birds 'N' Raiders

Said it pretty well. LB is an intriguing spot, but not a massive need. I don’t know exactly how the coaching staff feels about Moise, but they trust him enough to start him at SLB over a 3 year vet. Personally, I believe Fokou will be fine because the last few LBs to come out of Maryland have been pretty good (D’Qwell Jackson, Shawne Merriman, EJ Henderson). Stew has been coming along fine, I don’t know how exactly he’ll respond to the injury, but he has been effective in the least and seems to be the prototype for our D. We could go for a LB in the later round that can play like Washington at TCU, Johnson or Maxwell at Kentucky, or Mayberry at Indiana.

Macho just needs time in the system to get it down. He hasn’t been spectacular, but you can’t expect a rookie to be. There are some exceptions every year (Jackson at WR, Byrd at S, Ryan at QB) but he just needs time to develop.

Our biggest needs are LDE or CB. This is a thick CB draft so we could push that off till the middle rounds for guys like Trevard Lindley, Alterran Verner, Syd’Quan Thompson, etc. LDE is the biggest. I could see us trying to move up and get Derrick Morgan. I’ve seen us in some mock drafts taking Carlos Dunlap or Greg Hardy, but I don’t trust Dunlap’s heart and Hardy can’t seem to stay healthy 2 years in a row. Brandon Graham or Jason Pierre-Paul are also possibilities.
