Ndamukong Suh NFL Draft scouting report

Ndamukong Suh

6'4, 305 pounds | DT | Nebraska

Pass Rush: Is an effective pass rusher. Suh has good height and length, which he uses to wrap up passers and block passing lanes. Has quick hands and can disengage blockers at the point of attack. Uses a punch and swim to knock the blocker off balance. Shows potential in space because of his superb footwork and agility. Has shown a good inside spin move to break inside the guard. Does tend to wear down on longer plays and can be seen waiting for the ball to be thrown when tired.

Pursuit: Works well coming off his pass rush to disrupt a screen or chase ball carriers. Has enough short-line speed to run down the ball in the backfield. Has long arms for wrapping up and/or stopping the ball carrier.

Quickness: Very good initial quickness and burst. Anticipates the snap count and fires off in to his man. Is not timid. Shows great quickness in space and when lined up on the edge.

Run defend: Shows good vision and awareness in the run game. Will hold up his blocker on the inside and look for the inside rush. Breaks through double teams well and fights through traffic to make the play. Moves down the line well. Has the size to disrupt zone blocking schemes. Does come out too high at times. Will lose anchor against teams who double him. Looks smooth getting away from cut blocks. Can be inconsistent holding his ground at the point of attack.

Size: Possesses adequate size and length for a defensive tackle. Has long arms that help him get good leverage. Might not be able to get much larger, though.

Strength: Is a strong player with a good build. His low center of gravity helps, as most of his strength is in the lower body. Is strong enough to collapse the pocket and fight off double teams. Has strong hands and uses them well disengaging.

Tackling: Suh led the Huskers in tackles in 2008 and 2009, a rare feat for a defensive tackle. Is a gang-tackler. Has the needed athleticism to chase and make open-field tackles. Good explosion. Will chase on screens and stretch plays.

Technique: As a nose tackle in the 4-3 defense, Suh shows good technique in driving in to his blocker, disengaging from the initial block and working down the line of scrimmage when the ball is away. As a pass rusher, Suh has great quickness and can get around most interior linemen. On the edge he has the speed and agility to get by tackles (especially right tackles) and make a play on the backfield.

Versatility: Has been used as a nose tackle in a 4-3, an end in a 3-4 and a goal line and I-formation fullback.

Final word: Suh is perhaps the best defensive tackle prospect in the last 20 years. Considered a first-round talent entering his senior season, Suh has emerged as clearly the best prospect available in the draft.

As a senior, he won the Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award, Outland Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award. He was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and was named the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year.

Suh dominated games as a senior. In the Big 12 title game, Suh had 4.5 sacks and seven tackles for a loss. Against Missouri, he intercepted a pass and had a sack. All season long, Suh got pressure on quarterbacks, knocked down passes and blocked kicks. No player had arguably as big on an impact on games as Suh this season.

It's hard to compare Suh to a current defensive tackle because he's so good. This might be somewhat of an overstatement, but Suh just might be the next Joe Greene.

If I had to pick a current comp for Suh

It’d be Jay Ratliff. They’re nearly identical, size-wise (6’4, 300) are both big-time penetrators ,occupy blockers, have deceptive speed and pursuit ability with a lot of athleticism. I would say that Suh is probably more athletic than Rat. That being said, Ratliff is one of the very best DTs in football, and if Suh reaches that level Lions fans should be very pleased.

I just woke up from the most lovely dream

I dreamed I heard the following announcement at the 2010 draft:

“The Oakland Raiders have traded their 2010 1st round pick, their 2010 2nd round pick, their 2011 2nd round pick, Justin Fargas, Cooper Carlisle, Gerard Warren, and Greg Ellis to the Detroit Lions in exchange for the #2 overall pick. The Oakland Raiders are now on the clock.”

[30 seconds later]

“With the 2nd pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders select Ndamukong Suh, defensive tackle, Nebraska.”

This fantasy could easily come true if two things happen

1) The Rams take Clausen #1 overall
2) Detroit’s front office staff are all high on crack, shrooms, crystal meth and oxycontin on draft day morning

Shame on you

You know Detroit banned shrooms because it made the coaching staff giddy over wide receivers.

Besides

Even if the trade were made Oakland would draft “Taylor Mays” a USC safety with world class hitting abilities and “big potential” written all over him.

As a Gator fan...

If Carlos Dunlap does go to Oakland, it should be final proof that Al Davis’ family needs to hold a sanit… actually, since we hate Oakland, this would be a perfect fit. Go ahead, Al, draft an SOB whose actions during SEC Championship week gave UF the wrong kind of distractions that could have well cost us the B©S title game, go ahead take him you deserve each other.

I'll respond to this offer with a counter offer...........

Keep your over thirty garbage players and give us Louis Murphy WR and Mike Bush RB instead, plus the three picks and you have a deal!

I hope you and Mr. Suh will be very happy together.

Hahahaha, no I don't want a fair deal

Hence the part about it being a lovely dream. :-)

Mocking Dan

There will be much debate over whether the Rams should take Clausen or Suh. If they wait another year for a QB (Locker?) would Suh keep them from being the worst team and losing the draft pick?

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes

by lifelongvike on Dec 31, 2009 12:59 PM EST reply actions

I doubt it. At the rate the Rams offence is scoring points they will be in single digits next year.

2007 – 16.4 PPG; 2008 – 14.5 PPG; 2009 – 11.3 PPG

They need a QB…..and pray like hell that Steven Jackson stays healthy all year.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 31, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

actually...

wouldn’t the Rams be better off taking a better player…like Suh, #1, then getting someone like Snead in round 2?

Clausen is good..but I don’t think he’s Stafford or Sanchez good. He may end up better for all I know…but I really don’t think there’s a gigantic difference between Clausen and Snead (or a few others..).

The thing with Suh..he could make that DL 2007 Giants’ish. It could be the missing piece for Spags to make Chris Long and whoever the hell else is there into ‘stars’.

This is a fairly deep QB draft. I don’t think any QB would start right away anyway.

If the Rams actually do their HW, they should be able to identify a QB worthy of their 2nd rounder (or GASP! 3rd rounder?!!).

Suh’s just too good to pass up, especially when the top QB (if it really is Clausen) doesn’t pop out.

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 31, 2009 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

If you’re as bad as the Rams are, you take the best player available. McCoy & Snead should be around in the 2nd round. Plus Spagnuolo came from the Giants who won their superbowl, thanks largely to their D-Line.

by Gobroks on Dec 31, 2009 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, thats right. The Giants did not need to draft a QB early to become a contender.

They would never think of using an early pick to get a franchise QB. They spent all their early picks on linemen.

Hold it a second, are you referring to the 2007 Giants or the 1990 Giants. Because that comment might apply to the Hostetler led team in 1990, but not to the 2007 Giants.

FB are you now saying that Eli Manning was not an important part of that Super Bowl winning team? That’s not what you say on the Giants blog.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 31, 2009 11:34 PM EST up reply actions

Eli Was a key part of that team

But you could argue that the D-Line was more important to that team. 1 Player isn’t going to change the Rams and I think the Rams want to build inside-out.

by Gobroks on Jan 1, 2010 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

I guess my point Gobroks was that the Giants sold the farm to get their franchise QB.

While a lot of fans continue to pay lip service to the “defence wins” and “games are won in the trenches” theorys, the truth of the matter is that you need a high quality QB to win on a regular basis in the NFL. Period.

NFL GMs and Coaches know that and act on that when they find a guy they believe in.

If you do not have an elite/franchise/whatever QB, you will continually be up and down in the standings.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 1, 2010 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Thats true-The QB is the most important part of a football team

But I just think when you have a talent as good as Suh’s and you’re as bad as the Rams are you need to take the best player on the board.

Hoping for BowkerMania to hit AT&T Park in 2010

by Gobroks on Jan 1, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

The Giants had a defense tho.

They had an O-Line in place pretty much.

They had a good WR in Toomer. They had Jeremy Shockey.

What are you talking about North?

Plus…I think the Giants were a lot more sold on Eli..or even Rivers or Ben, then anyone is on Clausen.

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 1, 2010 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Let me get this straight FB...the Giants already had a good team when they drafted ELI?

How do you end up with the #4 pick of the draft when you have a good team?
They went 4 and 12 in the 2003 season right? That was a good team?

Stop the BS FB. They drafted Chris Snee in 2004 too and got Shaun O’Hara as a free agent that same year. David Diehl was a rookie in 2003 and played all sixteen games as a Right Guard before moving to Right Tackle in 2004, before moving to Left Guard in 2005 and 2006, before becoming the Left Tackle in 2007. Kareem McKenzie was added as a free agent in 2005. They did not have an O line in place before Manning was picked. That is flat out wrong.

As for their defence…players added in the draft and free agency from 2004 on: Gibril Wilson, Reggie Torbor, Justin Tuck, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, Antonio Pierce, Mathius Kiwanuka, Corey Webster, Jay Alford, Aaron Ross, Micheal Johnson, Sam Madison, Kevin Dockery, Kawika Mitchell, James Butler,…..the only two guys on the defence before Eli showed up were Strahan and Umenyiora.

I don’t care if your opinion is that the Rams should draft Suh because he is the best player available. Just don’t use the Giants experience to try and justify it. It is just not true. The Giants did the exact opposite as you are recommending the Rams to do.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 1, 2010 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't bring up the Giants...

I purposfully left them out of the first post.

All in all, yea the Giants built around him.

Its just..as a prospect, in the draft….ELi, Rivers, Ben>>>>>Clauesen.

Suh is one of the best DT prospects in years…Clausen….no.

I dunno how sold the Rams are on Clausen. I know for a fact the Giants were sold on Eli…that’s why they traded for him.

In the 2010 NBA draft the NY Knicks select.....Nate Robinson. 5"9 PG from Pringles' Doghouse U!

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 2, 2010 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure how you figure that.

Clausen’s stats as a Junior wipe out pretty much any of Eli, Rivers, or Ben R. when they were Juniors. 68% complete, 27 TDs and 4 INTs. Over 8 yards per attempt. That is almost unheard of for a Junior. And those stats came in a pro style offence against some pretty good competition. Would the NFL like to see him repeat that as a Senior? Sure they would, but that is not in Clausen’s best interests.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 2, 2010 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see what makes Eli, Rivers, and Ben better than CLausen

by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 3, 2010 12:39 AM EST up reply actions

by FreeBradshaw on Jan 3, 2010 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

Height doesn’t matter as long as you are tall enough.

I’m pretty sure(very sure) Philip Rivers is an A-hole.

Clausen would have started 4 years if he returned.

If Clausen had a good defense he would have won a lot more games.

by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 3, 2010 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

Wins aren't QB stats.

Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

by Fearless Frog on Jan 4, 2010 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

Eli was far more important to that team.

The D-Line was important in Superb Owl XLIII but Eli brought that Giants squad to greatness in the playoffs.

Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

by Fearless Frog on Jan 4, 2010 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

I agree FB, there is no difference between Clausen or Snead. Well maybe a little.

Snead dragged down a very good Ole Miss team, that really only started to play well when the offence began to feature Dexter McCluster and minimized the throws Snead had to make and the damage Snead did to his own team.

Yeah, good luck with him as your franchise QB.

Clausen also seemed to have alienated a lot of teammates...

he didn’t get punched cuz he was offering his seat.

I’ll leave that at that.

He didn’t get punched for no reason.

here's the million dollar question...

it’s one we’ve been debating on Arrowhead Pride for some time now…

Can Suh play NT in a 3-4???

He’s not your prototypical Vince Wilfork 330lb or more guy… but Ratliff is an example of a guy who is similar size and plays NT…

thoughts?

* "I doubt anyone will miss Connor Barth except UCrawford"
* the LB corps may become the biggest strength of the Chiefs in 2009
* The OL is NOT as bad as you think it is... give it time, and you'll see improvement this season
* Stats are for losers

by stagdsp on Dec 31, 2009 5:27 PM EST reply actions

He may be

But if I were drafting a player that high, I wouldn’t want a maybe. If you’re taking Suh, It’s as a 4-3 tackle. You can’t risk your potential perennial DPOY candidate busting.

by Conjunction on Dec 31, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

+1000

Good point Conjunction. It amazes me that fans and some knowledgeable football people talk about a position change for a player being picked in the top ten or so.

The football people must be very, very confident that the player has the skills, intelligence, and ability to make the change. Personally I think it is too risky. If you are going to pick a guy in the top five, you should utilize him exactly where he has played in college.

Play around with later picks as “projects”.

by NorthLeft12 on Jan 1, 2010 7:59 AM EST up reply actions

agree, in theory

however, Suh does line up over the Center a fair amount at Nebraska.

He does command double teams, which is very important from your NT…

I agree that it is possibly a “waste” of his talent, and he’s better suited for 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE… BUT, he’s a special player, and you could build a defense around him…

again, I go back to jay ratliff as an example, he makes a lot of plays as a NT for Dallas, with similar size to Suh… why couldn’t KC use him in a similar manner?

Ratliff plays in a one-gap 3-4 scheme.

His job isn’t to take on multiple blockers, which is why you see him far more often than a typical NT. The problem is that to my recollection, only Wade Phillips runs a scheme like that.

Holmgren would have drafted Crabtree.

by Fearless Frog on Jan 4, 2010 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

He would get by, but it would be a waste of his ability. He’s got too much going to be relegated to drawing multiple blocks. In a 3-4 he’d be an end where he can take double teams and still shut down one side of the field, or dominate blockers that just have help.

I haven’t seen this kind of obsessive behavior over a “Can’t Miss” player since… Orlando Pace. Even Peyton Manning wasn’t getting this kind of love (half the scouts, honestly, had Ryan Leaf as their top QB… which goes to show, scouts don’t think with their brains).

As a Bucs fan, I can only ask: how does Suh compare to Warren Sapp? Sapp was a Can’t Miss DT (who missed because of somebody named Mary Jane) who had great years but then slacker years, kind of an up-and-down career… Is Suh more consistent?
