Anyone interested in a joint draftek computer draft
Drafttek.com has a great mock draft computer simulation program that is free to all. It is quite complex in that one has to rate each of the teams offensive and defensive needs on a scale of 1-9. It then selects the players for each team off of its updated database of ranked players. Unfortunately one can't re-rank the players but they do a pretty good job of scouting and updating their rankings.
I thought it might be interesting if we could generate a consensus computer model. I would suggest that anyone interested go to the website and learn the program. Then send a response to this thread with your rankings of team needs. If you agree with the settings already programed for your team just say so in your response.
Here are my rankings for the Vikings.

Are you in?
This will take quite awhile to compile with a group. They will get it updated I’m sure.
What tardas are you referring to?

Steve_Chiefs gave us a needs list below. Do you agree with it for the chiefs? Any suggestions?

Count me in for the Steelers
I’ll get the numbers tonight when I get home. Could possibly do the whole AFC North if need be.
by Cannon36 on Dec 31, 2009 2:57 PM EST via mobile reply actions
That would be great if needed.
My hope was to get as many knowledgeable fans on board so we don’t have “homers” deciding needs of their most hated teams.

wow!!! multiple needs at one position and no other.
You do realize that the computer will probably grab the first two OT available no matter who else is on the board right?

You are missing a diget in your offensive #‘s. Must have 11. As of now your numbers are saying you don’t need an OG.

Nice.
This should be fun. I’ll chime in with my Broncos numbers when I get a chance.
"A player who conjugates a verb in the first person singular cannot be part of the squad, he has to conjugate the verb in the first person plural. We. We want to conquer. We are going to conquer. Using the word 'I' when you're in a group makes things complicated." ~ Wanderley Luxemburgo, 1999

I will say though the rankings seem ok

Yes they distinguish
in their opinion which players will do well in certain defenses. They also allow us to choose to block certain players ( character issues or injuries) from being drafted by certain teams or allow you to grab a player ( like Tebow to Jacksonville) if you want to override the computer.

by TheRealSlimShady on Dec 31, 2009 8:21 PM EST up reply actions
Yes
we have Henne(like it or not he is Parcells guy and I think he is allpro calber), White, and traded for Thigpen. All are under contrct and young.

But usually a 9 would mean you have someone VERY good like a Brees or Manning. Henne is solid at best

I am just saying
I would not draft a QB in any round unless something crazy happens like Bradford in the 3rd. Parcells wont draft a qb in any round

Your offensive #s are one digit short. You need 11 positions not ten.
I’m curious. Why did you want a slot receiver instead of a featured receiver? Maybe the missing digit is throwing me off.

You are going to adjust the draft order appropriatily.
Chiefs have 2-2nds, and 3-5th round picks and no 6th or 7th
We Will kick at least 4 Teams Asses in 09. Almost there :)
And Succop will be the Key in two of them. Skins & Raiders! Pittsburgh Sweet!

add an M5 on the OT
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
it's a multiple pick code
after one OT is taken it’ll set OT to a 5 instead of a 9 (an M4 would set it to a 4, etc). If for if you need more than one player at a position.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

Draft tek just expanded their mock to round 5, so the 5th round trades are in. Draft Tek does a roll out during the year. It started with a two round mock and has been expanding as time goes on. We will get to a full 7 rounds.
Have fun with your project. Draft Tek is a great site.

Thanks
It will be interesting to see how the computer conducts our draft without the fan part of us picking players. Merlinn maybe you can tell us how the “grab” part of the program works? The draft really changes if I discontinue the default grabs set by drafttech.
Thanks in advance.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Grabs are “take player X if available in round Y”. the grab overrides any team need searches and just takes that player. There are a couple of strategies team analysts use when they put in a grab. If an analyst has good reason to believe a certain player is targeted. For example. Cleveland has a grab for Jimmy Clausen in round one. A team analyst may put in grabs for multiple players in case one of them falls. Indy has grabs on six players in round one. If one of those players slips, Indy will grab them.
Merlinnj
So
in order for our teams to properly draft I need to take off the default grabs and have our GMs place their own grabs.
Is there a way for me to cancel the defaults of some of the teams but not others?

Why would Cleveland have one on Clausen?
by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 2, 2010 10:46 PM EST up reply actions
Well, because they want to draft him. With Holmgren in charge and Clausen being well versed in the west coast offense, it’s not a bad idea.
Merlinnj
Quinn actually would be a good fit for a west coast O, and I don’t think we’ll give up on him.

Saturday Update- 10 Teams are in and OBSERVATIONS
So far the numbers are in for:
Browns, Indy, Packers, Chiefs, Dolphins,, Steelers, Skins, Boys, Vikings, and Jags
Here is what I am noticing.
The help screens might be fun to read.
Wide Reciever: The program separates speed recievers, tall recievers, and featured recievers. If you need a reciever so bad you will reach for a speed one (P2) do you really not want a slot reciever at all (P9).
RB. Same thing. If you want a Featured back don’t you have to rank a change of pace back pretty high also?
Priority codes.
You might want to look at the code help section. a P2 designation means you will reach in the draft to fill the position. P3 and P4 are BPA type designation. P5 and P6 are later round selections for team depth. P9 means don’t draft at all.
Multiple Codes:
When you put in a multiple code think of it like this. The code is the rank of the 2nd player at that position. In other words a (M3) would mean that after your original selection is filled you want a (p3) inserted to replace it. If you wanted to replace the first position taken with a later round (depth) player you would use (m5)or (m6)
The program won’t save these settings for me except for a couple of days so I won’t be inserting them untilafter this weekend. Please feel free to make changes.

Changes I have made to Vikings
After reviewing my first picks i noticed a couple of things.
1) Apparently I did not want a running back to replace Chester Taylor even in the last few draft rounds.
2) I apparently need a TE worse than I thought
3) I don’t want a fast reciever at all (WRS) or a Tall receiver (WRP). Even if one is available!!
4) I need a DT so bad I am willing to reach for one
Having re-looked at it I am changing
Vikes:
Offense 3 95 566 5455 9
Defense 39 49 49 4 354 9

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
damn...
tho I did see Myron Rolle to the Giants in round 7.
A Rhodes scholar, who’s a damn good football player, going in round 7 ( I doubt its a reach…)?
I’d anoint Jerry Reese for the Nobel Prize if that happened.
N8 !
They haven't evaluated players after the 4th round yet.
I’m sure he will move up after evaluation. I forgot about him though.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
And I don't like many of the GIants picks there...other then Rolle...
however they got there.
Another Wisconsin TE? What the hell for? Might as well skip over the pick!
N8 !
ugh
I’m guessing you didn’t turn off the draft-tek baseline grabs. They have a ton set for the Colts making it impossible to do anything to change the picks in the early rounds if you don’t have them off.
I’m also not sure what’s up with the order. The above order has the Colts with a 6th rounder and without a 7th. I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around.

Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
much better
I really can’t see a pass rushing DE in the first. DE in the 2nd is plausible if it’s really +19 value like draft-tek thinks, plus he’s so big he could take some run downs or be a 3rd down UT.
DT, CB, S, OLB, ILB is a lot of solid depth.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Actually amazing for a computer program.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
This is kinda screwed up. I mean, Clausen out of the first round?
by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 4, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions
Thats why grabs are so important. Otherwise
it justs takes guys right off a predetermined list of ranked players.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
A very interesting thing you got there
A great DE and Tebow. That satisfies everyone I think.

The Vikings thank you for Bradford
We ended up with a QB, DT,SS, and TE. Can’t complain.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Its pretty obvious how the teams needing a QB will jump in and
change this draft picture. Can you imagine Clausen falling to 29th. If we had all 32 teams putting in grabs it would change our picture a lot also.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Could you throw in a grab for the Browns on Berry then Haden?
by TheRealSlimShady on Jan 4, 2010 5:13 PM EST reply actions
Notice in the first draft
that Seattle grabbed Haden with the 6th pick. Can you figure out though whats up with Kansas City taking Taylor Mays. I know the computer has him rated high but how could KC take the #2 safety?
I would be happy to add grabs if everyone will send in their grabs.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
Doing the phins
Grabs
1) McClain
2) Bowman and Von Miller
3) Morgan Bennett and Benn
4) Micah johnson and Jermaine Cunningham
6) Lindsey Witten(if MJ in 4th) and Chris Brown
7) Sergio Render
that would be a dream draft for the Phins completely referbishing their defense
3 new 2010 starting LBers via 2010 draft
Confidence breeds success, self-doubt breeds failure
Look at draft #1
This draft includes grabs by all teams as inserted by drafttech. You can see if your guy would be available. In your case you would be giving up George Selvie for Von Miller. You did get McClain in the first round.
Winning is not everything but it sure feels like it sometimes
I see Miller as an OLB and would do just that :)

GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!
by TheAngelsColts on Jan 5, 2010 4:33 AM EST up reply actions
I'm not so sure its unrealistic,
especially draft #1 with the grabs. I do think its unlikely. The draft is totally dependent on the ranked list of players that drafttek has prepared. If you don’t agree with their scouting the draft looks horrible. Obviously they like Taylor Mays more than I do. That doesn’t make them wrong. We just disagree.

DAN , It seems like this thread is over
Mocking Dan,
since only 11 players wanted to get involved it is not really possible to move this forward.
Hey guys thanks for playing. Maybe we can try it later as the boards are updated.
