Jimmy Clausen enters NFL Draft
To the surprise of no one, Notre Dame junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen announced today that he will enter the 2010 NFL Draft.
"After the season, in talking to my parents and obviously Coach Weis, I just feel it's the right time,'' Clausen told ESPN.com on Monday before a scheduled 2 p.m. ET news conference in South Bend. "Coach Weis told me whether he was going to be here or not be here, it was time for me to go. He thought I've improved so much since I came to Notre Dame. So, I'm taking his advice, and I'm going to head out.''
Clausen had a sparkling season for the Fighting Irish. He completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,722 yards, 28 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Even more remarkably, three of the picks were on tipped passes.
At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Clausen has a solid NFL frame. The only catch there is that he's already bulked up 35 pounds since high school and adding more weight might be difficult.
Coming from the Charlie Weis pro-style offense, Clausen should enter the NFL a step ahead of other quarterbacks coming from a spread offense. Clausen's mechanics are sound and his arm strength can make just about any throw.
He even showed plenty of grit as a junior, playing through a foot injury that required him to wear a plate in his shoe during games. Clausen emerged as a leader early in his career, a trait that will make him even more enticing for general managers.
Clausen's 2009 season was consistently spectacular all year. He only threw for less than 200 yards in one game and never completed less than 55 percent of his passes in a contest. He finished second in the nation in quarterback rating at 161.4.
Clausen also had the good fortune as a junior to be surrounded by perhaps the best receiving corps in college football. Wide outs Michael Floyd and Golden Tate, as well as tight end Kyle Rudolph, might all be first-round draft choices. Floyd and Rudolph, sophomores, can't enter the draft until 2011. Tate hasn't made his NFL intentions known.
Stay tuned: We'll have a full scouting report on Clausen this evening.

I’m sure Clausen will be a high draft pick just based on him playing at Notre Dame.

Why does everybody have to be so derogatory whenever ND is brought up?
Especially coming from you. You and T.J. are the guys I respect most on this blog because you have real insight and stay professional, for the most part. Can’t we just talk about the players and forget about team preferences?
I kinda wasn't knocking ND there....
I’m saying…IF Clausen’s only claim to fame is being from Notre Dame…then he’s a bust.
Point being, Jimmy Clausen would be a very good QB coming from anywhere.
He was elite at ND cuz Weis, all in all, is a good QB coach and he also had some nice weapons there.
So, if Joe Blow was said to be the #1 overall pick…simply cuz he’s from ND…then he’s a bust.
Jimmy Clausen has more than that.

Not unexpected.
He seems, right now, to be the best QB in the draft.
I’d go with Mallet first, if he declared. His Flacco’ness is too intriguing to pass up.
I could see him going to the Rams and forming a nice aerial attack (then again..considering they’re the Rams..I could see him being a bust).

You think Mallet comes out this year?
It's not that I'm lazy, Bob, it's that I just don't care
I hope so. I don’t want James Clausen to go #1

I think he'll put some feelers out...
why not?
As far as I’m concerned, he’s the best QB in the draft, at least potential wise (and is pretty good as is).
If a team in the top 10 says they’ll take him…he’s gone.
The potential rookie scale next year may entice as well.

Much Worse
Almost as bad as going to the Raiders.

I think that's why Locker's going back
Redskins and Raiders.

I doubt McDaniels does it.
Doubt he falls that far anyway.

if your a Clausen fan...
of course you would. Him going to the Browns, Rams, etc. is not gonna help as much as if he was allowed to wait a few years in say…Minnesota or at least sit a year behind Orton in Denver.
…but I;m sure Clausen would rather go #1. $40+ million reasons why too.

When in doubt...throw it to Steve Smith.
