There's a rumor making the rounds that a arrangement has been made to ensure that Tebow will be on the board when the Jags pick in round one -- and that no one will trade up to get in position to draft him.

This is from ProFootballTalk. It will not be dignified with a link. I just figured it was too absurd not to pass along.

IF this is true...

I’m at a loss for words.

Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.

sucks for them

Tebow would make a good H-back though. Hopefully they pick him with that in mind.

For you Jaguar fans...

I hope its not true.

Really a crock just to get a player to get more fans.

what if he flops? The hell is that gonna do?

And if he doesn’t play? are the legions of Gator fans gonna chant his name? Yea…that’s not gonna affect the team…

What I don't get

Are they actually going to start him right away? Are that many more people going to buy tickets just to see Tebow on the bench? The only way I see a boost in ticket sales is if he starts right away, but at the same point some people might not go because it would be a bad product on the field.

Too many questions about that.

Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.

by tj.hendricks on Dec 8, 2009 11:53 PM EST reply actions

This would qualify as collusion wouldn't it?

I think Tebow does end up a Jaguar, because otherwise they’ll move to LA. And it’s not like Tebow will be an awful player, they can fit him in in some Wildcat packages.

by Flowing Willow on Dec 9, 2009 6:31 AM EST reply actions

Its not that clear-cut

We could definitely stay in Jax even if we didn’t get Tebow.

yes, he will be an awful player. He really has no position. Too slow for a RB, no fundamentals for a QB, no physical abilities for a TE. Maybe he could be a longsnapper

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 9, 2009 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

The QB of the Wildcat cannot think like a QB, even a running QB. Cribbs doesn’t, so it works. White thinks like a QB so it doesn’t. If you want the Wildcat don’t look to turn a QB into a Wildcat QB, look to a player who really isn’t a QB who can fit there if need be. Tebow runs like a QB, just like White, he won’t work.

Not facts, just my opinion, but I would put money it will hold up.

by Phantaskippy on Dec 11, 2009 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

Tebow sure as hell runs the option a lot.

So did Pat White.

Someone like Vince Young is not a good WC QB. Someone like Mike Vick, is not good for WC.

Tebow, Pat White, ran a lot of option in college. So did Josh Cribbs.

"It ain't over till its over"---

How come no one covers Steve Smith?

by FreeBradshaw on Dec 13, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

White is too much like Young, and I bet Tebow too. Cribbs is more like a Hines Ward or Randle-El. They played QB when there wasn’t a QB on the roster. No one looked at any of those three seriously as a QB, not even as an afterthought. Tebow White and Young have QB skills that people look at and consider, I don’t think they would work.

Randle-El might have been the best WC QB, because he can throw a mid range pass if needed.

by Phantaskippy on Dec 14, 2009 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

Not really

The wildcat would be much more dangerous if you had a guy line up in it that was a threat to throw the ball.

Bears suck, Cubs suck, Bulls suck, Illini suck, who would have thought the Blackhawks would be my best shot at a title.

by tj.hendricks on Dec 9, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

which is why the Fins drafted Pat White

But he has looked overhwlemed at the moment, suprisngly Ronnie Brown is not a bad passer.

I think Tebow could be abetter WC triggerman than Pat White.

Pat White is still young.

yet he’s been on the field more in year one than Chad Henne was. Just wait I bet Pat White will be a big success next season….. if Tuna can get some decent recievers around him.

by CardsDefense on Dec 10, 2009 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Pat and Chad are only playing QB due to injury

Miami stated earlier that Chad would be the QB next year. They drafted Pat strictly as a wildcat QB and backup QB. Most teams are one injury away from being average. I don’t think Miami wants to be in that position.

The Raiders make a lot of sense too. They still have a pretty sizable fan base in Los Angeles and they have actually sold less tickets to their home games than the Jaguars.

The Raiders and Chargers sharing a stadium in LA is the most logical scenario to me.

by Adam Stites on Dec 9, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Chargers aren't going anywhere

The city finally came back to the negotiating table and they’re looking at breaking ground downtown as soon as early 2012 if all goes well.

No

and thats what makes this entire fiacso so ridiculous. They could easily trade into the second or pick him with a third but then again, since this entire situation is a marketing thing a nice shiney 1st round pick is a lot more hype worthy than a second or third.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Dec 9, 2009 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

this theory will not work for them

People only buy tickets when a team is winning. Sure they will buy tickets when Tebow first comes to Jacksonville but after he shows he sucks they will stop. I watched this same theory go down the drain with the Detroit Pistons last year. They brought Iverson to town (for the salary cap space) but they used him to sell tickets while he was here. At first they had their fiverson ticket plans, where you bought ticket packages to five games, people were buying his jerseys and games sold out. Well, after about 15 games of garbage on the court, the Pistons were struggling to sell tickets worse then i even seen it and by the end of the year they were lucky if they place was full. This theory does not work. People want to see a winning product, that is the only way to sell tickets.

by Lions1788 on Dec 9, 2009 11:36 AM EST reply actions

In Jacksonville people don’t buy tickets even when they are winning (even before the recession they had trouble filling up the stadium). Personally i think the only option Jacksonville has in making the team viable is to win the superbowl. Once upon a time the Dolphins couldn’t sell tickets for love nor money and scalpers would literally give tickets away… untill that is they won the superbowl. Win the superbowl and all manner of fans will come out of the woodwork.

Like you, i don’t think Tebow will give the team a prolonged boost in ticket sales.

by Sheffieldbengal on Dec 9, 2009 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Even a Superbowl appearance would be huge for the Jags. Unfortunately the city is too sorry to come out and support the team while in the thick of the wildcard race, so I guess it’s superbowl or bust for the Jags in the next three years.

Even if it were true that the Jags were looking into taking Tebow in the first round, it’s far too early for teams to be making deals behind closed doors. Zero percent chance this is true.

No honor among thieves

The NFL owners are a small group but certainly they kick, bite, and cheat each other over draft trades. They have used their monopoly powers to destroy competing leagues in the past. But among themselves they can’t even stay within their own rules for compensating players ( cap maximum and minimums) or each other ( revenue sharing). The draft is the key for teams to succeed in the future. They aren’t going to make some deal to let a player go to a certain team. The Jags might pick Tebow in the first round but unless they trade down to get him they will simply overreach to get him.

My guess is that come draft day they will do whats best for the football team not the owners pride.

Another good reason to ignore anything from the media that admits it is a rumour.

The crapola that most media outlets dish out as fact is more often than not false, so when they actually identify something as a rumour must mean that they absolutely don’t believe it either, they just think it will sell papers or get them some extra hits.

Pathetic.
