Scouting report: Michael Hamlin
Michael Hamlin
6'3, 206 pounds | Clemson | Strong safety
Strengths: Hamlin is an intelligent four-year starter who reads and reacts to plays quickly. Hamlin is one of the biggest defensive backs in this year's class and he uses that size to his advantage. He's a solid tackler, but can really hit. Solid playing in the box. Understands where the runner is going to best close holes. Named a team captain two consecutive years. In zone coverage, Hamlin uses his intelligence to break on the ball. Solid high-point agility to break up passes.
Weaknesses: Because of his ineffectiveness in pass coverage, Hamlin is a fringe first-day selection. He lacks natural agility and has stiff hips so he has trouble covering receivers. Poor change-of-direction ability. Stiff hips. He lacks good speed and has trouble chasing down ball carriers in the open field. Could stand to get stronger and become a real force against the run. Durability concerns. Has broken both of his feet.
Final word: Statistically speaking, Hamlin improved every year at Clemson. Finished his career with 326 tackles, 22 pass breakups and 14 interceptions. Named a first-team All ACC pick in 2008 and second-team in 2007. Because of his problems in coverage, Hamlin will have to be drafted by a team with quality free safety play.
