Scouting report: Andre Smith

Andre Smith

6'5. 340 pounds | Alabama | Offensive tackle

Strengths:
A steady, durable player, Smith has started since his freshman season at Alabama. A highly touted recruit, Smith has lived up to the hype as a premier run blocker. Uses his hands very well and has the strength to easily redirect opponents. Does nicely on the move. Does a good job staying low to get leverage.

Weaknesses: Doesn't have top footwork for a left tackle. Needs to improve his quickness. That may be a weight issue, which he's had problems with in the past. Weight has ballooned as high as 350 pounds. Seems to have the body structure of a guard with large legs. Suspended for the Sugar Bowl his junior year which raises some minor character red flags.

Final word: Many consider Smith a premier offensive tackle, but there are some glaring concerns about his play. A particular problem is a lack of great quickness for a left tackle. However, his strengths clearly make him an early first-round pick.

Round projection: 1
