SoCalStites Mock Draft
I'd love to hear some constructive criticisms and opinions on where I went totally wrong. I didn't do any draft day trades because that just gets confusing. I want the Jaguars to trade down in the draft, but I made the picks assuming everyone would pick in the spots they currently hold.
1. Detroit Lions - Aaron Curry - LB - Wake Forest
The BAP in the Draft and the Lions need to resist the urge to draft Stafford.
2. St. Louis Rams - Jason Smith - OT - Baylor
The Rams need to rebuild their offense and the line is where they need to start.
3. Kansas City Chiefs - Eugene Monroe - OT - Virginia
Someone needs to protect Matt Cassel and Monroe is the one to do it.
4. Seattle Seahawks - Matthew Stafford - QB - Georgia
Matt Hasselbeck is going to be 34 this year and Stafford could be the guy to take over.
5. Cleveland Browns - Everette Brown - LB - Florida State
The Browns need a pass rush and Everette Brown would fit perfectly into their 3-4 system.
6. Cincinnati Bengals - Brian Orakpo - DE - Texas
The Bengals would love to get their hands on a premium LT, but none will be available for the right value.
7. Oakland Raiders - Michael Crabtree - WR - Texas Tech
Al Davis loves his playmakers and Crabtree is just that, a playmaker.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars - B.J. Raji - DT - Boston College
The BAP after the first 7 picks. This would all but ensure that John Henderson is traded on draft day.
9. Green Bay Packers - Malcolm Jenkins - CB - Ohio State
The Packers need to replace their aging corners and Jenkins gives them the man coverage they're used to.
10. San Francisco 49ers - Mark Sanchez - QB - USC
The 49ers need a franchise QB and Sanchez is the best on the board at pick 10.
11. Buffalo Bills - Tyson Jackson - DE - LSU
The Bills need a TE, but 11 would be way too early for Pettigrew. Jackson will help sure up the defense.
12. Denver Broncos - Rey Maualuga - LB - USC
The Broncos' terrible defense needs a renovation and the USC linebacker is a start.
13. Washington Redskins - Andre Smith - OT - Alabama
The Redskins spent tons in free agency to fill holes, but they didn't fill LT. Lucky for them Andre Smith will fall out of the top 10.
14. New Orleans Saints - Vontae Davis - CB - Illinois
The Saints have had secondary issues for years now and Vontae is a very solid corner to build around.
15. Houston Texans - Aaron Maybin - LB - Penn State
The Texans are only a few pieces away from a great team, a strong outside linebacker could do the trick.
16. San Diego Chargers - Knowshon Moreno - RB - Georgia
The human highlight reel disappointed at the combine, but after looking at the game tape the Chargers may not be able to pass up.
17. New York Jets - Percy Harvin - WR - Florida
The Jets lost Laveranues Coles in free agency, but Harvin is an exciting replacement that gives Rex Ryan some room for creativity.
18. Chicago Bears - Jeremy Maclin - WR - Missouri
The Bears get the #1 WR that they need and he will help stretch the field and open holes for Matt Forte.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Peria Jerry - DT - Mississippi
The Buccaneers #1 need this offseason is DT and lucky for them, this superb tackle is available.
20. Detroit Lions - Michael Oher - OT - Mississippi
The Lions will continue their rebuilding by resisting the urge to draft a QB and getting value for their pick with Oher.
21. Philadelphia Eagles - Brandon Pettigrew - TE - Oklahoma State
The Eagles have made it clear they don't want L.J. Smith anymore, so they're likely to take the best TE in the draft in Pettigrew.
22. Minnesota Vikings - Brian Cushing - LB - USC
The Vikings don't have a huge need at LB, but Cushing should've gone at least 5 spots earlier and is definitely the BAP.
23. New England Patriots - Clay Matthews - LB - USC
Mike Vrabel has been a solid linebacker for the Patriots for a long time and Clay Matthews has the heart to take over for years to come.
24. Atlanta Falcons - Sean Smith - CB - Utah
The Falcons need a CB and Sean Smith provides a good-sized, playmaking talent for their defense.
25. Miami Dolphins - Hakeem Nicks - WR - North Carolina
The Dolphins need a legitimate #1 WR to compliment Ted Ginn and Nicks has the size and hands to fit in that role perfectly.
26. Baltimore Ravens - Alphonso Smith - CB - Wake Forest
The Ravens need to get younger on their defense (shh...don't tell Ray Lewis) and Smith is a great corner to start with.
27. Indianapolis Colts - Michael Johnson - DE - Georgia Tech
Dwight Freeney is on the backside of his career and Johnson provides a good replacement for the future with his pure athleticism.
28. Philadelphia Eagles - Eben Britton - OT - Arizona
Tra Thomas is now a Jaguar and the Eagles need a LT. The 4 premium guys went too early for the Eagles, but Britton falls right into their laps.
29. New York Giants - James Laurinitis - LB - Ohio State
The Giants didn't think that Laurinitis would ever fall to them this late in the 1st round, but they got lucky and end up with a starter.
30. Tennessee Titans - Darrius Heyward-Bey - WR - Maryland
I hated so much to make this pick, but it's such a great pick for the Titans. The Titans get a scary, deep threat to compliment their run game.
31. Arizona Cardinals - Chris Wells - RB - Ohio State
Edgerrin wants out and Hightower doesn't seem like he can take the load. Wells is a very talented workhorse RB who can eventually take over.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - Duke Robinson - OG - Oklahoma
The Steelers need to sure up their offensive line and the mammoth guard is a great building block to get back to the running game.
2nd Round
33. Detroit Lions - Evander Hood - DT - Missouri
34. New England Patriots - Darius Butler - CB - Connecticut
35. St. Louis Rams - Josh Freeman - QB - Kansas State
36. Cleveland Browns - LeSean McCoy - RB - Pittsburgh
37. Seattle Seahawks - Patrick Chung - S - Oregon
38. Cincinnati Bengals - Max Unger - C - Oregon
39. Jacksonville Jaguars - D.J. Moore - CB - Vanderbilt
40. Oakland Raiders - Alex Mack - C - California
41. Green Bay Packers - Clint Sintim - LB - Virginia
42. Buffalo Bills - Larry English - LB - Northern Illinois
43. San Francisco 49ers - Jamon Meredith - OT - South Carolina
44. Miami Dolphins - Connor Barwin - LB - Cincinnati
45. New York Giants - Kenny Britt - WR - Rutgers
46. Houston Texans - William Moore - S - Missouri
47. New England Patriots - Mike Mickens - CB - Cincinnati
48. Denver Broncos - Fili Moala - DT - USC
49. Chicago Bears - Herman Johnson - OG - LSU
50. Cleveland Browns - William Beatty - OT - Connecticut
51. Dallas Cowboys - Juaquin Iglesias - WR - Oklahoma
52. New York Jets - Robert Ayers - DE - Tennessee
53. Philadelphia Eagles - Rashad Johnson - S - Alabama
54. Minnesota Vikings - Phil Loadholt - OT - Oklahoma
55. Atlanta Falcons - Sen'Derrick Marks - DT - Auburn
56. Miami Dolphins - Eric Wood - C - Louisville
57. Baltimore Ravens - Jason Gilbert - DE - San Jose State
58. New England Patriots - Derrick Williams - WR - Penn State
59. Carolina Panthers - Ron Brace - DT - Boston College
60. New York Giants - Brian Robiskie - WR - Ohio State
61. Indianapolis Colts - Maurice Evans - DE - Penn State
62. Tennessee Titans - Louis Murphy - WR - Florida
63. Arizona Cardinals - Paul Kruger - DE - Utah
64. Pittsburgh Steelers - Victor Harris - CB - Virginia Tech

DE for Indy was a poor choice
they have a great 3 man rotation at the DEs (two of which made the Pro Bowl) with a pair of young Mathis clones to develop.
It’s a little early to be replacing a 29 year old who just started in the Pro Bowl.
QB and TE and maybe C/G are the only spots that are less likely than DE for Indy’s 1st rounder. DT/LB/DB/OT/RB/WR are all possibilities. DE is not.

WTF?
DE, DE for Indy?
You are messing with the Colts fans right (I can see in your profile you’re a Jags fan).

Haha I really wasn't
I guess I was off base. Who was available that should’ve been taken instead?

Laurinatis, Britton, Ziggy Hood, Shady McCoy, DHB
really just whoever is BPA at one of the DT/LB/DB/OT/RB/WR where a 1st rounder would be useful right away.
for the second rounder…
Donald Brown or Rashad Jennings if Shady wasn’t the 1st rounder, or Gerald McRath if it wasn’t a LB in the first or maybe (I don’t like these as much) the next best CB off the board, Mickens, Harris and Byrd are all cover-2 type guys.

Oh I can see why you'd think I was messing around
I didn’t even realize I picked a DE in the 2nd too. My bad.
yeah, DE is misinformed
DE, DE is messing with me.
and scratch Mickens from the 2nd rounders, I just saw you had him going before their 2nd rounder.

Well I'll make the change in my next mock draft which wont be for a month or so
but thanks for the comments and I’ll keep them in mind next time.
but yeah DE is solid in Indy
Freeney is 29 and coming off a Pro Bowl/double digit sacks year, Mathis is 27 and coming off the same. If they can get some more DT help they can keep Raheem Brock at DE full time to rotate with Mathis and spell Freeney.
Last years 5th rounder Marcus Howard and UDFA Curtis Johnson are promising guys trying to follow in Robert Mathis’ footsteps.
If Brock goes back to DT full time they’d need a big DE, but if they get a legit DT then they’ve upgraded that spot and gotten a great DE for run downs.

Wow
Now I feel like I should just say I was messing with you so I don’t look like such an idiot for picking two DEs.
there's a reason I haven't even attempted a mock draft yet this year
knowing every teams needs and scheme is hard
