Day of reckoning for Andre Smith

Smith_medium

Today is it for Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith. He'll take part in the Crimson Tide pro day and help stop his free fall.

It is a fall that began when Smith was suspended for the Sugar Bowl. Then it continued when he showed up at the NFL Scouting Combine out of shape before just leaving altogether. My pal Luke Chandler of New Era Scouting expounds on Smith's issues here.

Those concerns have pushed Smith behind Eugene Monroe of Virginia and Jason Smith of Baylor. However, he can turn it around today. By testing and interviewing well, he could again become a top 10 selection next month.

After I find some information following the pro day, I'll update this post. If Smith is out of shape, there is some discussion he could drop all the way to the end of the first round. And it wouldn't be a surprise if teams frop him completely off their draft board.

Update: Things are not looking good thus far for Smith. More after I finish an interview with Boston College's Ron Brace in a few minutes.

Here are some details: Smith ran 40-yard dash times of 5.28 and 5.33. No big deal, he's an offensive lineman. He did, however, only bench press 225 pounds 19 times and according to a Pro Football Talk source, "bombed."

Going in Smith's favor was the weight he checked in at. He measured in at 325 pounds, which is pretty good. Some feared he'd come in at 340. Yet, some regard that as being "visibly overweight."

Oh, the hits keep coming:

What to take from all this: Smith's stock will probably be about the same. He's the third or fourth best tackle to most and will be drafted anywhere from pick eight to late in the first round.

Oher

I still like him better than Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe. I know I’m in the minority there, but he just looks like a natural at LT. The others are good, but Oher can be dominant.

On this note

I have to ask. Why did Oher make such a huge drop from top 10 pick to possibly falling out of people’s top 20 in so many mock drafts all at about the same time? It was pre-combine and there was no reason for it to happen.
