Scouting report: Jarron Gilbert

Jarron Gilbert

6'6, 280 pounds | San Jose State | Defensive tackle

Strengths:
For a player of his size, there may be no better athlete in this year's class than Gilbert. He's incredibly quick and fast and has long, powerful arms. He used those tools at San Jose State a gap-shooting defensive tackle, but may be a better fit in the pros as an end. He played both positions in college and was impressive. Gilbert is especially quick off the snap when he times them correctly. Closes with a lot of speed and explodes into ball carriers. Works well through double teams. Very secure tackler and has the ability to flip his hips and square up to make tackles in the open field.

Star-divide

Weaknesses: Gilbert can be considered, at this point, more of an athlete than a football player. If he moves to end, he needs to learn the proper technique in pass rushing. He'll often use his a quick first burst and nothing else to beat tackles. Playing on the inside, Gilbert will allow linemen to get inside his pads and control him. Played in an aggressive defense predicated on penetration and getting into the back field and will sometimes over-pursue. Didn't play against great competition. Against Nebraska his senior year, for instance, GIlbert only managed two tackles. Only had one sack as a senior.

Final word:
There are few players with as much potential and intrigue in this class as Gilbert. He is turning an incredible senior season and strong offseason into a possible first day draft selection. As a senior, he had an incredible 22 tackles for a loss, the most in the nation. Still, there are questions about his level of competition and ability as a pass rusher.

Round projection: 2

Plus, he can jump out of a swimming pool. That’s big.
