SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick #18

No. 18

DENVER
BRONCOS

Pick by Mile High Report

Clint Sintim
Cornerback

Ohio State

After trading Jay Cutler to Chicago, the first new pick obviously went to the SportsGuru

The Broncos need help along the front seven and a lot of it.  We are going to give Josh MCDaniels time to see if he can create magic with Chris Simms or Kyle Orton because he has had a large role producing strong quarterbacks that were drafted in later rounds.  With that in mind, the Broncos need to address their linebacking corp.  Sintim has been a favorite of mine all off-season.  What I thought could be a steal at the top of Round 2, Sintim has steadily rose up the Big Board to a point where I thought there was little chance the Broncos could land him.  With the extra 1st round pick, however, Sintim is worth a bit of a reach, like many considered Jerod Mayo last year.

Sintim is the perfect player to toss in at OLB in the Broncos new 3-4 scheme.  With Elvis Dumervil and Jarvis Moss huge question marks, the Broncos need to bring in some impact talent that can get to the passer as well as cover in space.  Sintim has proven he can get to the quarterback, registering 20 sacks the past two seasons at Virginia. What I like best about Sintim is his versatility, something the ‘New’ Broncos are going to focus on as they transform the roster.

Sintim has a chance to be a stud linebacker, and the Broncos are in desperate need of a defensive team leader. Sintim fits the bill.

MTD thoughts: The Broncos have a great need for athletic linebackers who can get after the passer and Sintim is a perfect fit. This might be early, but it's a good need pick.

Mocking the Draft's Top Five Remaining Prospects - WR Jeremy Maclin, CB Vontae Davis, RB Chris Wells, QB Mark Sanchez, DE Michael Johnson

Note: This is an updated pick following the Jay Cutler trade.

I don’t like Maclin at all, personally, but I realize it’s a highly touted player at a position the Bears need.

I think Maclin is a great pick for the Bears. Chicago fans have had their share

of poor WRs. Just curious though, did Sanchez cross your mind at all? Or was it simply that if a WR of Maclin’s caliber (comparable by some accounts to a Crabtree) fell to your pick, he would be in the position to contribute now to a team that is playoff ready?

I didnt' even mention

his return abilities. Can you imagine the options the Bears special teams with Hester, Manning and Maclin back to return kicks? Add on Davis and Bennett and Wolfe who all are capable return men.

Sweet...

Damn the OT, that’s what they make Round 2 for.

An excellent value at 18.

Who is throwing Maclin the ball?

I am super curious. I think Maclin is a great pick and a heck of a player and don’t fault you at all for taking him but who is your opening day QB going to be?

Orton was doing pretty well before he hurt his ankle then got rushed back

he’s nothing special, but there are worse QB situations in the league.

Minny, KC,

and I’d put it on a similar level as Oakland, Buffalo, Cleveland and St. Louis

Orton had one of the worst QB seasons ever his first shot at starting, but he was a mid round rookie thrown into a terrible offense. He’s much better and the Bears O is better around him.

Orton's issue

He has no arm. He can’t throw a consistent deep ball. It is hard to have sustained success in this league without the threat of the deep ball.

Pennington was one of the best in the league last year

and he had a sub-par arm before his shoulder was shredded twice.

a QB’s physical skills are overrated. Peyton’s laser-rocket arm isn’t the strongest in the league. Guys like Kyle Boller and JaMarcus Russell who launch passes from their knees through the goalpost from the 50 put his arm to shame, but they aren’t good QBs because they don’t have the preparation and decision making, Peyton is the tall ideal for QBs, but Drew Brees has been the 3rd best QB in the league for the last few years and he’s listed at 6 foot.

Buffalo?

So you’re saying that Marc Bulger and Trent Edwards are only as good as Jamarcus Russell? Seriously?

it's a rough grouping

I’d definitely, put Edwards at the top of that tier.

In my mind it was teams that “have a QB but it’s not a sure thing they’ll get quality play from him.”

Bulger has gotten the crap beat out of him behind that line and isn’t a young guy, Edwards has been solid so far, but needs to keep improving. JaMarcus has tremendous potential, but isn’t doing much with it so far, Quinn is talented, but hasn’t proven anything.

I would take Edwards over Orton

he’s a year younger and produced similarly last year with less experience.

So that’s 9 clearly worse QB situations and there are probably another handful of comparable ones.

Thanks for clearing it up

Your points are valid. I just saw Russell and Edwards paired together and was just floored.

And yet Tampa and Detroit

(at least on this website) both passed on QBs with picks 19 and 20.

Out of curiosity, is this draft going to be two rounds like last year or just one? Maybe, dare I hope, three?

by math_geek on Mar 30, 2009 11:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

2 rounds
