AFC West--Monitoring Team Needs--Weekly Update, 3-5-09

Time to catch up on the weeks happenings in the AFC West!
The early starters were the Denver Broncos, making a number of low cost free agency signings all over the place, including stud Brian Dawkins. But stepping right behind Denver was the Chiefs, who pulled off a great move to bring in franchised QB Matt Cassel, for only a 2nd round pick, though inexplicably they have decided it is better to have a QB competition at the spot... Oakland waded out into the shallow end of the free agent pool witha focus on resigning a few of their own, while San Diego is content to sit on the sidelines now, with a few feelers extended out into the free agent market, and internal focus on what is increasingly looking like a rift between the organization and Tomlinson.
Below you will find the charts updated and notes on the most recent signings. See you below the fold!
| KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
2008 Record and Rank: 2-14 4th place |
Team Needs | Likely Draft Targets (rd) |
| DE, RT, C, WR, LB, CB, FS, K, DT | DE, Brian Orakpo, Texas(1st) | |

OG Adrian Jones UFA DE Jason Babbin UFA LB Pat Thomas UFA LB Rocky Boiman UFA CB Tyron Brackenridge RFA CB Dimitri Patterson RFA SS Jon McGraw UFA S Oliver Celestin UFA |
TE Mike Merrit (cut) QB Damon Huard (cut) LB Donnie Edwards (cut) CB Patrick Surtain (cut) |
- The big news for the Chiefs, of course, was the acquisition of QB Matt Cassel. Of note, however, was the Chief's decision to "trade on the tag," or basicall, to sign Cassel as a one year player. This means he will be competing with QB Tyler Thigpen in camp, and one has to wonder if a 2nd round pick on a backup QB and a LB on arguably his last legs has the same shine...
- The other biggish news is the requested trade/release of G Brain Waters. At this time, the coaching staff seems to be skirting the issue, and hoping that it blows over in time for training camp, but Waters seems like the type of guy who will stand behind what he has said...
- The Chiefs' UFAs don't seem to be getting a lot of traction in the open market. So far only QB Damon Huard has resigned (with the 49ers) and LB Pat Thomas has been visiting with teams.
- WR is still a need, but the Seahawk's Bobby Engram doesn't look like he will be in the picture. Despite the addition of LB Mike Vrabel, the Chiefs are still looking at LBs in Free Agency, including 32 year old Clark Haggans. The Chiefs are also visiting with S Keith Davis, who would look to start in a special teams role.
| OAKLAND RAIDERS
2008 Record and Rank: 5-11 3rd place |
Team Needs | Likely Draft Targets (rd) |
| LT, WR, CB, DE, DT, ILB, TE, OLB, FS | OT, Andre Smith, Alabama | |

- The Raiders got some work done to address their o-line depth, including resigning G Cooper Carlisle, and bringing in UFA OL Erik Pears. Pears was a versatile starter for Denver who could play every spot on the line, including 14 starts at LT and 16 starts at RT. The Raiders acquire him after he spent 2008 on IR for an emergency appendectomy. They are also in "heavy" negotiations with OL Khalif Barnes from Jacksonville, and it looks like a very good chance they will sign him.
- Start the rumor mill, cause with WR Terrell Owens being cut in dallas the buzz from the bees is that he would "fit in" in Oakland. I don't know if they are looking at cap space, or whether TO could accept a one year offer, but with Javon Walker due a guaranteed payday, perhaps this is a subject that the Raiders would best leave untouched.
- UFAs DB Justin Miller, WR Ashley Lelie, and TE Ben Troupe all went on visits around the league and are receiving legitimate interest.

- The Broncos have been VERY busy in free agency, signing 13 players since free agency began, and parting ways with 25 others.
- The big pickups for Denver are Brian Dawkins, who is expected to move into a SS type role near the line, similar to that occupied by John Lynch in his final years in Denver, and NT Ronald Fields, the first significant signing meant to address the void at NT with any sort of urgency.
- With young, inexperienced players in the ranks already in the backfield, Denver signed 3 veterans to go with Champ Bailey back there. Outside of 2nd day depth pickups, Denver's DB shopping should be pretty close to finished.
- With the surprising news that Denver plans on trying DE Darrell Reid out at OLB, this gives Denver a serious glut of ??? at the position, with no less than 8 players on the roster who all can be projected to the OLB posiiton, yet none have ever started in before.
| SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
2008 Record and Rank: 8-8 1st place |

- The Chargers have been one of the quietest teams in free agency, and have also managed to slow the LDT rumors down to the barest of trickles. With reports that he isn't willing to devalue his base pay, but that he is "optimistic" that a deal will get done that keeps him in San Diego, it seems the ball is squarely in the Charger's court. They have to choose whether to pay him like a starter (i,e, more than the recently franchised Sproles), or they have to state that they are willing to let him go.
- LB Kevin Burnett of the Cowboys has been the only legitimate free agent target of the Chargers, and they look to be close to nailing him down. With DB Drayton Florence off the block and the Seahawks in the running for S Jermain Phillips, it will likely stay quiet around San Diego for a little while yet.

Wow, the Broncos have been busy.
Chiefs and Raiders still suck and the Chargers are keeping the pieces in place for another 8-8 run!

I wouldn't be surprised
to see the Chargers’ running game get significantly upgraded this year. Sproles and Hester will be solid, and either LDT will be back or the Chargers could nab either Wells or Moreno in the draft…both are scary propositions. But the real upgrade will occur on th line, where I think the Charger’s let Goff walk, and the result will be that they will become better all along the line. The line will reorder itself a little bit, but when it does it will take better advantage of the palyers who are there,a nd they have some young guys coming up who could be very good.
Basically, I think they will make one or two moves, but that they will increase the overall chemistry of the team. And don’t forget that Merriman should be back, and that their defense is bound to play better with Rivera callig the shots from the get-go this year…
I wouldn’t sleep on the Chargers this year.

Chargers Corrections/Comments
-Cletis Gordon is a CB, not a WR
-Eldra Buckley is listed as both a signed free agent and a free agent lost
-WR is not a need. We have Chambers, Jackson, Floyd, Naanee and Davis in an offense that rarely has more than 2 WRs (plus Gates) on the field.
-DeJuan Tribble was drafted last year by the San Diego Chargers in the 6th round and I don’t think he signed a one-year deal.
You were pretty close to dead-on in your comment above. Our offensive line will see an improvement with McNeil getting healthy (he played all year with a neck injury that required major surgery) and Goff being replaced (he was awful). Our need on the offensive line is RG or RT, depending on what’s available. If we sign a RG I’m sure we’d be fine with Clary remaining at RT (we may have already signed that guy in Forney).
If LT works out a deal for a smaller contract with the Chargers, that does not mean we’re necessarily done upgrading the position. Hester, Sproles and LT all bring something to the table but what we’re missing is a punishing runner who can take 200 carries over the course of the season without breaking down physically.
I want to know why Seattle being in the running for Jermaine Phillips means the Chargers are out of it?
The Chargers biggest needs are at Safety and Defensive End (a DT in college to put in the 3-4). Their first-round pick will be used on one of these two positions since there is so much good 3rd round talent for RB. If we do not nab Phillips, I’d look for Malcolm Jenkins to be the pick or Raji if he’s available. The only way we get an OT is if it’s one of the other top-10 prospects besides Andre Smith. With a recent rash of crimes committed by Chargers, I think we’d avoid anyone seeming suspicious.

The biggest crime was keeping your GM around.

Good points
-fixed cletis
-I have Eldra Buckley cut and with the Eagles now. Does that sound right?
-I really like Naanee and Floyd, Davis…ehh, not so much. I Removed WR from the want list though, and highlighted DE.
-I have a recent report on Tribble being signed to a practice squad contract…here it is…Also it indicates that Eldra Buckley was signed at the same time….somethings not jiving here.
I was actually thinking that if Clarey gets benched he should start taking reps in the interior line and try to fit in as a backup at every position. I’m betting he has the “bones” to match up well inside. If he can do anything consitently its sit down and hold tight.
For Jermaine Phillips, I’m thinking Seattle will be willing to overspend for him, but maybe this is just his lucky day… Both of you guys seem to have the same need, with a SS already on the roster (weddle strikes me as the kind of guy who can play better closer to the line, at any rate), so I don’t see one team prioritizing Jermaine more than the other, so it comes down to front office moves. Seattle has already willingly paid some big cash, so I figured they would outbid AJ.
I also removed Andre smith, who was in a lot of teams sights. He is only on the Raider’s board now. ;)
Great thoughts, and thanks for the heads up, obviousman. This is exactly the kind of feedback that I was looking for!

No idea about the Tribble/Buckley article
Must have had something to do with them being practice squad players.
Clary has the strength to play either of the guard spots effectively, but we already have Murczkowski as our guy who can back up just about any spot on the line. If we pick up a RT in the first round of the draft, Clary will be in the running to start and backup at RG.
Wait and see with Phillips. He may not like the idea of playing for a rebuilding team with a coach who was fired not too long ago.

Drayton Florence was signed by Buffalo
That has doused the rumors of Cromartie being traded. Raji won’t be there at the Chargers current pick, but they could in principle trade up.
The Chargers hope that McNeill recovers fully from his cervical surgery, but it was a major surgery. He also had his second major back problem in 2008, the other coming in college. He’s a tough guy and a very good LT – they need him to get healthy.
RT Jeromey Clary was uneven at best. RG Mike Goff is now gone, as is backup center Jeremy Newberry. 2006 UFA LG Kris Dielman, thankfully, had a second straight Pro Bowl year.
It’s true, the Chargers 1st UFA signing this February was guard Kyle Forney, but last I heard he is expected to compete for the starting RG slot. I haven’t heard anyone suggest that he’s a tackle, but they do need both with the exit of M. Goff and Clary’s uneven play. The Chargers had signed Forney originally in September, but he did not play in the 2008 season. Backup OL Scott Murczkowski just had surgery on his shoulders. The O line will be a concern for a while – hopefully all the players come back well from their surgeries, including N. Hardwick’s foot surgery.

Clary's play was uneven in the beginning of the year
but got better as the year went along. By the end of the year he was much more consistent and only had problems when he tried to rely on Goff for help. For a guy starting at RT for the first time, he had a solid year and we can certainly expect him to get better. Like I said, we’ll improve this position if someone falls to us in the draft, but we’re not going to go crazy trying to get someone to replace Clary.
Also, we have another solid RT prospect from last year’s draft (Corey Clark) and L.J. Shelton (a former first round pick who has become a solid, but unspectacular OT).
All of the injuries will be healed well before training camp. Our line should have ample time to heal up.

Receiver
We probably just have different perspectives, but V. Jackson had his second DUI, Chambers was very inconsistent and while I do like M. Floyd, Buster Davis hasn’t shown anything, so you’re a little thin here. I agree with you completely on DE and Saf., though

Chambers was very consistent when healthy
He just fought through injuries in ‘08. We have other more pressing needs that push WR to the backburner. Will we maybe grab someone in the later rounds in hopes that he can turn into a solid WR? Maybe. But we’re not using anything higher than a 5th rounder and we’re certainly not signing any free agent WRs.

Styg, where did you hear Reid was going to get a shot at LB
Do they see him as an Adelius Thomas type of player? Just curious since I thoought he was going to be a 3-4 end.

I'm pretty sure I read it in the Post this morning
but I was surfing for roster updates so if not there maybe rotoworld.. All I can think is that they thought he has the speed to be on the outside, and not enough experience or strength to be a DE….

Also, what is the take on Igor, seems like with a good professor he would be a good pick up
Do you think SD resigns him or is his career over, doesn’t seem like anyone else is jumping the gun to pursue him.

To my knowledge
Nunnely isn’t to fond of Igor, so as long as he is coaching our D-line, I suspect that he will advise against Igor.
I don’t think Igor’s career is over, he seems way too young, and he is certainly adequate. i would guess that SD resigns him in the latter stage of free agency. Hopefully a SD fan chimes in and gives his thoughts…

Nope
Someone else who doesn’t have enough pieces to run the 3-4 properly will grab him. Someone like Denver or Green Bay. He’d make a solid backup DE in the 3-4, but we have enough solid backups and need someone who can start.
