SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 1, Pick #23

NEW ENGLAND |
Pats Pulpit ringleader MaPatsFan dishes the news. Let's see if he can dish the opinion equally as well.
With a mediocre showing in the defensive backfield, New England has had a tough couple of years defending against the pass. I believe letting Asante Samuel go to Philly was a major mistake for our front office and they need to get a ball hawk back in the mix, a guy willing to take risks. Davis is just the kind of guy. He's been known to have discipline problems and a poor work ethic, relying on his athleticism to get by, but I don't believe a Bill Belichick coached team will let that fly.
It's true we've upgraded the CB area with Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs, but Bodden's is a one year deal and the 34 year old Springs is for three years. However, I can't see him being productive towards the end of that contract. We need some youth at corner to stock up for the future and get the young guys under the mentorship of Hobbs, Springs, and Bodden. With young guys Jonathan Wilhite, Terrence Wheatley, and Vontae Davis as well as vets Ellis Hobbs, Leigh Bodden, and Shawn Springs, New England's backfield could be in good shape for this season while laying the groundwork for future seasons.
MTD thoughts: While linebacker is clearly New England's biggest need going into the draft, it would be hard for the team's front office to pass on such a talented player. Very good value pick.
Mocking the Draft's Top Five Remaining Prospects - CB Vontae Davis, RB Chris Wells, QB Mark Sanchez, DE Michael Johnson, RB LeSean McCoy
Note: This is an updated pick following the Jay Cutler trade.

Yeah, should've gone for a corner....
….so I could’ve picked Sintim.

Hmmm...
I would’ve though Vontae Davis is the pick here. Or if you don’t like his work ethic, Alphonso Smith is also an option.

Corner
I’m not sure I understand the logic in NE going for a corner (unless you’re Dave the Falconer ;-)). We already have vets Ellis Hobbs, Shawn Springs, and Leigh Bodden with second year guys Jonathan Wilhite and Terrence Wheatley. OLBs were flying off the shelves and we just lost one.

Sintim is going to be a terrific player
I just wonder if New England is ever going to spring for a top-flight cornerback. It seems to me that they’ve gotten by on a combination of decent rookies, solid veterans and patchwork signings over the last few years. While I think you can achieve a quality pass defense with that and a good front seven, it seems to me that there’s eventually going to be a game or games where that lack of greatness in the secondary is going to bite you.
Or maybe I’m just still mad you took Sintim!
