SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick #41
![]() |
![]() No. 41 |
GREEN BAY |
After selecting Everette Brown to kick start a transition to the 3-4, Brandon from Acme Packing Company is in a position to seemingly draft the best player available.
This isn't a need area for the Packers, with tight end Donald Lee settled in as the starter and tight end Jermichael Finley drafted in the third round last season, but Mike McCarthy loves big receivers and there isn't a bigger receiver in the draft then Pettigrew.
The tight end can also play the roll of a full back in the Packers offense, so there could be opportunities for all of them as McCarthy tinkers with his schemes. The first big contract ever handed out by general manager Ted Thompson was a seven-year deal to tight end Bubba Franks, who immediately threw his career on the scrap heap after he signed it. Drafting Pettigrew might be his chance to finally get the performance he was expecting out of Franks.
MTD thoughts: Should this end up being the pick, it would likely shift the focus of Green Bay's offense. It would be even more predicated on short throws and a strong running game. All things considered, that just might be what's best for Aaron Rodgers.

Not a bad idea
but the Pack shoud be focusing on some fat for their 3-4 line, or maybe some O-Line depth. TE already has 2 guys who are gonna play a lot, doesn’t make much sense.
good pick
The Packers run a lot of multiple tight end formations. As a Packer fan, this would be a great pick because both Lee and Finley aren’t good blockers. Pettigrew is, and he can catch the ball as well. If we got him, McCarthy would have a whole lot of options to throw at the defense.
Yuck. Was totally going to take Pettigrew at #42. SO close…

At this point in the draft I would be looking at OT!!! That or DE would appear to be MUCH bigger needs and I think there are some guys worthy of #41 at those spots. J. Gilbert comes to mind. He is taylor made for 3/4 DE!!! Huge athletic ability, and could even provide some pass rush from the DE spot! Not sure about who might be worthy at OT, but a J. Meredith might?!
Sorry, too many need positions and I don’t think Pettigrew is that good…
"and I don’t think Pettigrew is that good…"
Well, there’s your problem! Pettigrew is a fantastic talent and it’s very unlikely he escapes the first round in the real draft.

I don't think Pettigrew's talent is the problem
In the Actual draft he’s gonna go anywhere from #11 overall to at worst the Giants at #29

Bubba vs. Pettigrew
I haven’t seen anything that makes me think he is any better and maybe not as good as Bubba Franks was… He catches well and can block, but that all!! Bubba ran a faster 40 coming out of Miami than Pettigrew did. Sure he can catch but he’ll NEVER be a guy that can get downfield!!!
At least Bubba became one of the best blocking TE in the game. Is Pettigrew going to become that good a blocker? At least Bubba caught a bunch of TD’s from Favre that got him to the Pro Bowl. Is Pettigrew going to be a red zone target like Bubba?
Thats at best what I see in Pettigrew… I see nothing to make me think he is anywhere near a Gonzo, Winslow Jr, or Gates! And if I’m drafting a TE in the mid 1st or even later thats what I’m looking for…
Well maybe
you should look at the Dallas Cowgirls. I know, its painful cuz I don’t like them too. But their TE is a big guy like Pettigrew who really doesn’t seem fast, but like Pettigrew he is quick and strong and can get some YAC.
Oh yea, Jason Witten is one of the best TE’s in the game. DOn’t compare Pettigrew to someone he’s not. Compare him to Jason Witten and that’s the type of player he is. He is not a hybrid TE/WR like Gates, Winslow or Gonzo (Gates was undrafted BTW), he is a TE/OT, like Jason Witten. He is a steal here.
