My Mock Draft as of 4/12/09
1. Lions - Mark Sanchez/QB/USC - I think Sanchez is the safer of the two top QBs in this draft. The Lions could take Stafford or Jason Smith but I got a gut feeling about Sanchez.
2. Rams - Jason Smith/OT/Baylor - I think Jason Smith is the best OT in most scouts minds right now. With Orlando Pace gone I say the Rams select Smith to give them an anchor on the OLine for the next ten years.
3. Chiefs - Aaron Curry/OLB/Wake Forest - This pick was between Curry and Monroe. I decided on Curry because the Chiefs need some young blood in the LB corps for their new 3-4.
4. Seahawks - Eugene Monroe/OT/UVA - Some experts think the Seahawks will take a QB with this pick. I disagree. Hasselbeck has enough left in the tank and if the Hawks want a QB I think they can wait til the 2010 Draft. Monroe can replace Walter Jones on the left side when Jones retires in the next couple years.
5. Browns - Everette Brown/DE-OLB/Florida State - This is the first shocker in the draft in my opinion. Some people think the pick will be Orakpo but Brown is a monster and has speed to burn. He will be a machine in the Browns 3-4. I think Brown is the best player in this draft.
6. Bengals - Brian Orakpo/DE/Texas - This pick came down to Orakpo or Oher. I decided to take the best player on my board of the two. Orakpo is a monster and will be a sack machine for the Bengals.
7. Raiders - Darrius Heyward-Bey/WR/Maryland - This is my 2nd shocker of the first round. Heyward-Bey took the scouting combine by storm and I know Al Davis noticed. On tape you can see how much better Bey would be if the Terps had a QB with a pulse. I think Crabtree is a better WR but the Raiders take the WR with the most potenial.
8. Jags - Michael Crabtree/WR/Texas Tech - The Jags need WR help bad. Crabtree is the answer.
9. Packers - BJ Raji/DT/Boston College - The Packers have bigger needs but to run a 3-4 you need a NT with a pulse. I dont think anyone on the Packer roster can do the job Raji can.
10. 49ers - Matthew Stafford/QB/Georgia - I like Shaun Hill but if a possible franchise QB slips to 10 you have to take him.
11. Bills - Aaron Maybin/DE-OLB/Penn State - This is one of the hardest picks for me in this draft. I decided to slot Maybin here b/c the Bills have needs at DE and OLB. Maybin will fill one of those needs and help with the pass rush.
12. Broncos - Tyson Jackson/DE-DT/LSU - The Broncos like the Chiefs and Packers are going to run a 3-4 this season. Jackson is probably the most versatile defensive lineman in this draft.
13. THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS - Michael Oher/OT/Ole Miss - The Redskins are now on the clock and with the 13th overall pick I have them taking a guy who I think is the 2nd best OT in this draft Michael Oher. Some people arent high on Oher but he can pass block as well as anyone in this draft.
14. Saints - Malcolm Jenkins/CB-S/Ohio State - The Saints arent that strong at CB or S. Jenkins is the perfect answer.
15. Texans - Vontae Davis/CB/Illinois - I have Davis slipping a little in the draft to the Texans at 15. He should team up with Dunta Robinson to form one of the best CB tandems in football hands down.
16. Chargers - Andre Smith/OT/Alabama - Smith slides in my mock because of major character issues. If he can correct them the Chargers might just get the steal of the draft.
17. Jets - Jeremy Maclin/WR/Missouri - Another player who slips down my mock is Jeremy Maclin. The Jets need some speed at the WR position and Maclin should bring that and then some.
18. Broncos - Rey Maualuga/MLB/USC - Another piece to rebuild a defense that was terrible last year and should help ease the change to a 3-4. I dont think he is a bust like others say.
19. Bucs - Darius Butler/CB/UConn - I think Butler is the best CB in this draft and will be a steal for the Bucs at 19. He will help replace Ronde Barber when he steps down in the next couple years. Talib and Butler will be a sick combo in Tampa.
20. Lions - Peria Jerry/DT/Ole Miss - The Lions settle for my top DT in Jerry. I really love tape on Jerry and how he can tear things up in the middle. The Lions make a very solid pick here.
21. Eagles - Eben Britton/OT/Arizona - The Eagles decide to take Britton who will be another solid piece for them along the offensive line.
22. Vikings - Percy Harvin/WR/Florida - With Britton off the board I think the Vikings take Harvin and start dreaming up all the great things they can do with him and Adrian Peterson on that turf.
23. Pats - Clay Matthews/OLB/USC - Matthews is a typical NE pick and a guy who can help right off the bat.
24. Falcons - Brandon Pettigrew/TE/Oklahoma State - A great pick to help Matt Ryan. Pettigrew is like 2 players with one pick helping at TE and as a blocker.
25. Dolphins - Sean Smith/CB/Utah - The Dolphins take my 2nd rated CB in Sean Smith with the 25th overall pick. Like Butler, Sean Smith is a guy who doesnt get alot of chatter when compared to Jenkins and Davis. At the sametime he is a very good CB and should step in and make some plays early for the Dolphins.
26. Ravens - Hakeem Nicks/WR/UNC - Nicks is a WR with alot of upside. I think he is going to slip b/c of some issues leading to the draft. The Ravens will give Flacco a nice weapon to help improve the passing game.
27. Colts - Evander "Ziggy" Hood/DT/Missouri - I think the Colts would of loved to have Percy Harvin but instead settle for some much needed help at DT with Hood.
28. Eagles - Chris Wells/RB/Ohio Sate - The first RB is finally off the board at 28 to Philly. I first had Wells at 6 to the Bengals but he has slid into the Eagles laps and they will be very happy about it.
29. Giants - Kenny Britt/WR/Rutgers - With the run on WRs in round 1 the Giants decide to take a shot on a guy with alot of upside who can hopefully replace Plax in Kenny Britt.
30. Titans - Michael Johnson/DE/Georgia Tech - I think Johnson is a machine and the 2nd best DE in this draft. Others knock his heart but he has all the talent to become a Pro Bowler year in and out. He reminds me alot of Julius Peppers.
31. Cardinals - Alex Mack/C-G/Cal - The Cards decide to wait on RB and take the best interior lineman in this draft in Alex Mack. Russ Grimm is stoked.
32. Steelers - Alphonso Smith/CB/Wake Forest - The Steelers end the 1st round with the playmaker Smith. He has slid in my mock all the way to 32 and the Champion Steelers are more then happy to pick him up.
Players who could be first round picks that I left out of my mock.....
Josh Freeman/QB/Kansas State, Knowshon Moreno/RB/Georgia, Donald Brown/RB/UConn, Jared Cook/TE/South Carolina, Phil Loadholt/OT/Oklahoma, Eric Wood/C-G/Louisville, Robert Ayers/DE/Tennessee, Larry English/DE-OLB/Northern Illinois, Brian Cushing/OLB/USC, James Laurinaitis/MLB/Ohio State, Patrick Chung/S/Oregon, William Moore/S/Missouri, Louis Delmas/S/Western Michigan
Of the guys I left off my mock Brown, Wood, Ayers, English, and Cushing are guys I really wanted to put in there but couldnt. Cushing I had at 15 to the Texans but when I updated it had him slipping out of the 1st round.
Any feedback would be great. I will post another mock before the draft. Thanks!!!

Im not sure if everette will go to the browns because we already have a DE/OLB from FSU but i still like him.
Singletary said the 49ers wont take stafford because he wouldnt talk about his parents’ divorce to a team psychologist. I think its stupid to not draft someone cuz of that.

Mike Singletary made little sense with those comments. I slated Stafford at 10 because if the 49ers dont draft him at 10 someone else will by trading up imo. I still dont believe if Stafford is there at 10 the Niners would draft another player because of something like that. It was a hard pick to make because even though I like Shaun Hill and realize those comments Singletary made Stafford is still the best player on the board at that point.

Bengals -6- Orakpo
i think we would take Knowshon Moreno before we take Orakpo. People have said the Bengals are “high” on Moreno, and with over $50 million dollars tied up in out DEs already. it would be tough for us to take the DE from Texas
by firstPick on Apr 12, 2009 12:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont see Moreno going in the first round. He could slip into the late first round if they trade down and decide to take him. The Bengals need a pass rush and Orakpo would bring that at the 6 spot.

i would just hate to tie up $80 million dollars in just our DEs when we can get a pass rush different ways

I think its between Orakpo or a OT like Oher or Andre Smith. If im a Bengal fan I dont care how much they spend on a position as long as it brings results. Orakpo will be a stud at the next level. I think the Bengals have a shot at Moreno or Donald Brown at 38.
All i can say is if those DEs arent getting the pass rush needed then how much they are paid is pointless. The draft is all about getting the BPA at a position of need. Orakpo fills a need at DE and will easily be the BPA at 6 for the Bengals.

oh for sure i agree. when it really comes down to it, i dont care who they draft as long as they produce and help build a better team.
but it depends on what type of mock draft this is. What they will do or What they should do type of mock
by firstPick on Apr 13, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The mock is based on what I think they will do. I dont know if they will do it or if they should. I put the mock together having the teams draft the bpa at a position of need. I think Orakpo is the BPA at all of the Bengal positions of need.
I didnt use trades in my mock. If I did I would of had the Bengals trading down and taking a OT.

Despite questions about some of his post-season actions, Andre Smith is the BPA here and fills a much bigger need than potential-Gholston, Orakpo. Smith has now fired the agent that so poorly shepherded him through the earlier part of this process and signed on with Darren McFadden’s rep, who got his guy signed and in camp with no holdout last year. If we were running a 3-4 and could work in Orakpo at OLB, I might consider the pick but, as things stand, Smith is it.

I have Andre Smith slipping because of all the question marks surrounding him on and off the field. I might move him back up a little before the draft. I do think Orakpo is a different player than Gholston. I picture Orakpo as a 4-3 DE more than a 3-4 OLB. He can play OLB in a 3-4 but he wont be as good as he would be as a 4-3 end imo.

Britton
When you predict the Eagles taking Britton where do you expect him to fit in?? Do you think he would battle with the newly signed Stacy Andrews to start at RT or would he sit behind him for a year or two??
After watching Britton’s footwork do you honestly think he could play LT and protect the blindside against Osi/Demarcus 4 times a year??
by dt3 on Apr 12, 2009 3:46 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think you take the BPA at a need position. OT is a need for the Eagles. He wont be there at 28. Hell he wont be there at 22. Alot of experts have him as a guy with alot of potenial. After watching tape I agree he has the talent to become a very solid OT for years. Most rookies will have growing pains. If the Eagles draft Britton he will start on the leftside and be a instant upgrade over what they hjave at LT right now.

OT is a need for the Eagles.
no… LEFT tackle is a position of need for us. Drafting a player that has questions on where he fits across the offensive line just makes no sense. Saying that a player with footwork like Britton’s would be your starter week 1 against Osi Umenyora at the Meadowlands is crazy. Saying he is an instant upgrade over Todd Heremans (our current starter at LG who has filled in at LT well before) is just ridiculous.
Regardless of the LT vs RT argument, if we are drafting for BPA at a need position one of the USC linebackers would be our guy. Cushing and Matthews are with zero doubt better prospects than any of the o-linemen on the board.
If this is how the draft broke down 1-20 the birds would be much better off going wells/pettigrew at 21, alex mack at 28. I still havent seen a mock that gives us a better line (across the board) then herremans-jackson-mack-andrews-andrews.

Nick Comments dt3. I liked reading it.
When I say OT that includes LT. Any rookie who starts opening day is going to have subpar games. Britton is easily the best tackle left after the big 4 are gone. The point of the draft is to take talent and Britton is a talent at the most important position in football. If you dont think he can be a good LT then that would cause some problems with the pick but I think in time he could be a very good LT.
I did think about giving the Eagles Cushing with one of their first round picks. I decided against it but it very easily could happen.
I dont see how Pettigrew would be a good fit for the Birds with their other holes at 21. There are alot of good TEs in this draft. If the Eagles passed on Britton, Cushing, or Matthews for Brandon Pettigrew id have to say it would be a questionable pick to say the least. I think the Birds can take a TE later and have him and Celek at that position.
In one of my previous mocks I had Alex Mack going 28th to Philly. I agree that could possibly be their pick at 28.

enjoyed reading your stuff too… its nice to see mocks that actually try and push new lines of thought rather than Stafford to the lions, curry to the chiefs, etc etc.
We’ll see about Britton. Im sure you have those one or two players you want the skins to have nothing to do with… Britton (and to a lesser extent Beatty) are those players for me. Full disclosure though…Jeff Otah was that player for me last year and he is doing OK for himself.
Pettigrew may not be as explosive as some of the other 2nd round prospects but I think he could definitely fit in the eagles system. With Jackson and Curtis on the team we are not as desperate for playmakers as we once were when we had to depend on Westbrook and LJ Smith. If he could become a devastating blocking Chad Lewis there would definitely be enough value to justify him at 21. Either way thats not my first option at TE…. I would much rather them try to trade a mid rounder to SanFran for Vernon Davis but I doubt that really happens.

i agree!!!
i’m tired of hearing how Matt Stafford is going to Detroit because Stafford is the best QB in the draft and Detroit went 0-16 last year. i strongly think Detroit is gonna go with OT Jason Smith from Baylor. i also see KC trading down to get Rey Maulalega, but you can’t do that in a Mock Draft, so Aaron Curry is a good pick there. this is an excellent Mock Draft though. so kudos to you. i may disagree with Sanchez to Detroit, but who knows though?
by Jabooty on Apr 15, 2009 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for the feedback. If I was the Lions id go with Jason Smith also. I just have a feeling the Lions are going to take a QB. If they do I got Sanchez rated a little higher than Stafford. Its a risk but I decided to do it. Im glad you enjoyed the mock. Im planning on updating my final one in the next week for the draft.

From a Vikings fan
I like Harvin, but I don’t know if the Vikings front office is sold on him because of the rumors of him failing a drug test at the combine. The Vikings have just “red dotted” 78 players, eliminating them from their draft board based on character issues, injury problems, etc. If they do not decide to take Harvin, I would love to see them take Brian Cushing. He would come in and be an instant upgrade over Leber. With Jared Allen, the William’s wall, Chad Greenway, EJ Henderson, and add Cushing, the Vikings would have one of (if not the best) front 7 in the league. I think the Vikings will draft BPA in the first, and if Cushing is there at 22, that will be the pick.
by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Apr 13, 2009 5:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The Vikings could go a number of different ways. OT if Britton lasts to 22 or they could reach on another. They could go with a OLB like Cushing like you have stated. They could also go WR with a guy like Harvin or Nicks. They could go CB also with a guy like Sean Smith or Alphonso Smith. Or like you stated they could go BPA and take whos the top player on their board at 22.
I wanted to put Britton at 22 but I had him going one spot earlier to the Eagles. Harvin at this spot is a risk but he has tons of potenial on the turf in MInny. Too much for the Vikings to pass up imo. Id pay good money to see the Viking offense with AP and Harvin on the field at the sametime. Harvin can also help as a returner.
