SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick #50

No. 50

CLEVELAND
BROWNS

Pick by Dawgs By Nature

Patrick Chung
Strong safety

Oregon

Following the sound selections of Brian Orakpo in the first round and Percy Harvin in the second, Chris Pokorny from Dawgs By Nature is up for his final pick.

When the new regime chose not to re-sign safety Sean Jones, they had a decision to make. Sign a big-name safety in free agency, or seek one out in the draft. The team didn't really show much interest in free agents like Jim Leonhard and Brian Dawkins, which was a surprise considering it added another position to our draft board that I would've rather have had focused on linebackers and wide receivers.

Nonetheless, I have already selected LB Brian Orakpo and WR Percy Harvin for the Browns at No. 5 and No. 36 overall, respectively. With Oregon strong safety Patrick Chung still on the board at No. 50, it was impossible to pass him up here. He has a lot of starting experience in college and is solid at stopping the run, a category the Browns continued to struggle in last season.

Chung would join a young Cleveland secondary. I would have preferred more veteran leadership, but since we're past that point, it's time to get excited for what Chung can bring to the table.

MTD thoughts: With three first-day selections, it's imperative the Browns come away with three starters. That's what Pokorny has given them with Orakpo, Harvin and Chung. Good job.

Damn, the Browns ripped it up in this draft. Chung is the best Safety in the draft I think. Nice pick.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.
Oh and I write words and stuff for Stampede Blue.

The only bad thing is after this pick we only have a 4th and a 6th.

Another good pick Chris. I definitely agree on the positions you took but i might have done things a little different.

1.Crabtree
2a.Barwin
2b.Chip Vaughn

Overall great job Chris

I think it’s a travesty that Josh Freeman is still on the board. Some team is missing out on a great QB.

No they’re missing out on the next jamarcus russel

To me, anyone comparing Freeman to Russell hasn’t done his research. He just sees a tall, strong, black quarterback and assumes they are the same person.

Freeman is really good. He has a very real chance of being the best quarterback in this draft.

so explain the difference

or is “Freeman is really good” all you have.

I see a tall, strong, raw, black quarterback with a high chance of busting out. and he does remind me of Russell.

Plays the five step game very well. Head is always moving. Moves through his reads faster than Russell ever did. Has a very quick and high release. Russell had a tendency to slouch when he threw. Not as strong of an arm as Russell yet can make all the throws.

Shows a much higher intelligence level than Russell although that may not be saying much as Russell is dumb as rocks. Mobility is similar.

Footwork is superior to Russell in every imaginable way. Rarely, if ever, throws off the wrong foot which was a common occurrence with Russell. Probably needs to work on stride length, but it’s still superior to Russell’s.

Showed a great capability to look off safeties which is an advanced technique. Doubt that Russell can do that even now.

The only attributes that Russell and Freeman share are their color and build. Russell is probably the better athlete, Freeman the far superior quarterback.

He has more in common with Matthew Stafford than JaMarcus Russell.

so everyone that talks about how raw and a risky pick he is, is wrong?

Raw is not an absolute term. Are there not different levels of “rawness”? Just because he has areas of work on his game does not make him JaMarcus Russell, Part II. JaMarcus Russell was raw to an astounding degree.

Of course Freeman has areas he needs to work on. But he is much further than JaMarcus Russell was in his progression as a quarterback. The Big Ten Network is showing the LSU-Iowa Capital One Bowl from a few years ago right now. If you are still awake, I advocate watching it to refresh your memory of JR as a player. An amazing athlete with a great arm, yet he looks like he is playing sandlot football.

Great pick!

Chung is still a young player with a lot of upside potential, he also plays very smart football and was used at Oregon as a roamer. I think he will help a lot with adding interesting blitzing packages and shoring up our run defense. A bit concerned with his ability to cover some of the better receiving TEs, but remember this guy is barely 21 years old! He has a lot of upside potential but has the smarts to make an immediate impact. Granted if we take Jenkins to play FS and move Pool to SS that would work too, but then we still have the huge hole caused by an incompetent LB squad. It was also mentioned that there are 2 really talented SS coming out next year in Mays and Berry and though that sounds excellent that we might be able to grab one of them next year, it doesn’t address the huge hole this year! Plus Chung will make an excellent back up next year worse case scenario, better than Adams atleast and with injuries thats not a bad place to have a reliable and versitile back up.
