SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick #52
![]() |
![]() No. 52 |
NEW YORK |
After really disagreeing with John B from Gang Green Nation about the selection of Knowshon Moreno in round one, I might just do the same here.
Without counting long snapper James Dearth, who has not played the position in years, the Jets have exactly one tight end on their active roster, 2008 first round pick Dustin Keller. Releasing Chris Baker appears to be a mistake. He was an excellent blocker and had a breakthrough 2007. Baker’s production may have dropped in 2008, but that was not due to anything he did wrong. His opportunities decreased as Keller emerged into one of Brett Favre’s favorite targets. The move only saved $2 million in cap space. Adding injury to insult, Baker signed with the hated Patriots after New York released him.
The Jets need to add a tight end. Specifically, they need a blocking tight end. Keller looks like he could be a special player. His speed and athleticism present matchup problems for most linebackers and safeties. However, he is undersized and struggles as a blocker. With that in mind, I am taking Cook, a guy who might be an even bigger blocking liability.
Why? Because he has the same strengths as Keller. He is fast and athletic, just as difficult of a matchup for linebackers and safeties. He exploits seams and identifies holes in zone coverage. If few teams have the personnel to successfully defend Keller alone, even fewer will be able to defend both Cook and Keller in multi-tight end sets. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer loves unconventional approaches to create mismatches. He would sign up for Cook in a heartbeat.
Cook also fills needs on the roster. The Jets are looking for a vertical threat. Cook has elite speed for a tight end and gain separation on deep routes. While his Combine time was 4.50, he is believed to have run in the high 4.3’s to low 4.4’s in the past. When he kicks it into high gear, defensive backs have a tough time running with him. The Jets have also lacked a big red zone target since trading Keyshawn Johnson nine years ago. Cook is 6’5" with a 41" vertical leap. This means no more fades to receivers under 6’0" tall as the Jets have run far too often for years.
MTD thoughts: I hate to disagree again with the pick here, but I need to.There is some depth at tight end, and a good blocker like Bear Pascoe could be found in the later rounds. While I like adding some firepower on offense, I really think this pick should have been Josh Freeman.
Mocking the Draft's Top Five Remaining Prospects - QB Josh Freeman, CB Alphonso Smith, RB Shonn Greene, TE Chase Coffman, CB D.J. Moore

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
boooooooooooooooooo this pick
Yea this would never happen
even the Jets aren’t this stupid.
They have a similar TE in Dustin Keller. Cook cannot block either so then you have two H-back type TE’s? No sense at all.
I could see it happening cuz it is the Jets, but if Josh Freeman falls this far I think they take a chance considering the QB’s on the roster.
Even the people who like Freeman admit he’s a project who probably needs to sit for a while. He’s not going to help a team win in 2009. 2010 is the earliest he’s contributing in any positive way. If I’m choosing my 2010 starter, I like any number of guys in next year’s class better. There are three young quarterbacks on the roster who could win the job, and the Jets seem confident in them since they had zero interest in a Garcia or Leftwich. Let’s find out. Anyway, that’s why I passed on him. Just because ESPN says the Jets need a quarterback doesn’t necessarily mean they’re taking one.
The team could use a playmaker on offense, namely a receiver. The guy I was targeting was Kenny Britt, but the Niners took him. I could have gone with Derrick Williams, but his route running and hands are suspect. He seems like more of a gadget player right now, not a starting receiver. Cook’s a vertical threat and a big target by the goal line, which are two needs at receiver. And the team has one tight end on the entire roster.
You’re entitled to your opinion this was a stupid pick. Perhaps the Jets end up with Freeman at 52, although that’s nowhere near of a slam dunk as some believe it to be. Three years from now, we’ll see whether Cook or Freeman is a better player.

I wouldn't even say Freeman is the right pick
cuz like you said, he really is no better than who’s on the roster either now or as a developmental prospect.
Im saying its dumb cuz you already have Dustin Keller. He is the same exactly player and Cook is much less of a blocker than even Keller ever was in college.
Id say Cook is gonna be light years better than Freeman, it just doesn’t make sense for the Jets to be grabbing him.
The Jets are a funny team to predict. Cuz yea, they have a hole at QB cuz regardless of what the ORG thinks of these guys, none have proven that they are NFL QB’s. The O-Line is pretty good, but you may need some depth and an eventual replacement for Faneca would be a wise idea.
I just don’t see a carbon copy of Dustin Kller as a wise pick. Brian Robiskie for WR would be a wise idea, or since I don’t know who you grabbed in round 1, then maybe one of the CB’s would be smart.

I saw it as Maclin,
so WR maybe not now.
WHy not a 3-4 DE? Maybe a fat DT to spell Jenkins like Ron Brace?

Brace is gone
Picked by St. Louis. Had he been there, I probably would have taken him. Any remaining NT prospect will be there in the 3rd round

Your points are valid. I simply looked at what the Jets need in a receiver, namely a guy to stretch the field. Cook was the best guy available in my estimation. I wouldn’t have made this pick unless I felt he could project to seeing action lining up out wide.

I love two TE sets as well.
But it seems that Freeman (who has huge bust potential) or one of the two QBs are dropping so far that you have to take one of them. Though perhaps you are set and believe that Freeman won’t be any better than Kellen Clemens.
Have to agree with MD about this pick
If Maclin had been the pick in round 1 as he should have, then Cook isn’t even a thought here. But I would then take Jarron Gilbert here. It’s just not clear if Freeman is better than KC or Ratliff, while Gilbert would be a much safer bet to reinforce the Jets’ aging D-line.
Scenario 2 would have been to trade down in round 1 and steal Tyson Jackson and then trade up in this round to get Britt, Robiskie or Pettigrew.
