2009 NFL Draft Day One- Open Thread
CHECK OUT THE COMMENTS FOR UPDATES LIVE FROM RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL
Two hours and thirty minutes until Matthew Stafford is selected #1 overall by the Detroit Lions. After that, the draft is very fluid. Will Smith go #2? Will a team trade up to get USC QB Mark Sanchez? Will Aaron Curry fall out of the top 5?
What do you think? Chit-chat away folks. This is one of many open threads going up today. We'll be posting updates to the thread main body text as well when we get information from John and Jason, who are both covering the draft LIVE from Radio City!
WELCOME TO THE 2009 NFL DRAFT!
[UPDATE] JasonB provides our first pick from inside Radio City Music Hall's press area:
To quote Jason:
We are literally sitting in Keyshawn Johnsons shadow now...
More Radio City images:
And now, the official press pass (cue "Holy Grail" music):
Another update from JasonB:
Steve Young just said Hi. Hasn't put his tie on yet...
[UPDATE]: We have a special Mocking the Draft podcast available which John and Jason did just minutes before they entered Radio City Music Hall. Enjoy.
[UPDATE]: From the draft floor-- JasonB is sitting next to Jason Cole of Yahoo sports. We overhead him saying that he’s heard that the Panthers aren’t finding any interest in Julius Peppers. We'll post more info if this changes, but right now it seems Peppers is staying in Carolina today.
[UPDATE]: The fans were just let in, so the buzz in the building has really picked up.
[UPDATE]: Our writers can confirm that the big talk on the draft floor is that the Rams are working to trade the #2 pick to the Redskins or Jets. No deals set yet, but talks are active.
[UPDATE]: Funny update from John:
Deion Sanders just jumped on the main stage and got roundly booed by the crowd. He seemed to enjoy it though.

Patriots
Sent out a feeler to Jacksonville offering their 23 and 47 for Jacksonville’s #8. No word on who they were after, but packaging and trying to move up makes sense given 11 total picks.

I’m back home after going to the store to get my snackage. This is the part I hate. Waiting. I might pass the time by playing the UFC demo.

I can't wait to see Mel and all the other clones look stupid at pick #3
Its not like they act like they have inside information or anything. I just don’t understand.
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

Me either. And don’t get me wrong, I’ll gladly admit here if I end up being wrong about Jackson’s pro potential. He just doesn’t seem like a player teams need to gameplan around and it would be silly to take him at 3.
should the Chiefs
reach and take Tyson could you see a ripple effect take place where teams take the players they are in love with at spots where that player wouldnt dream of being drafted (i.e. Josh Freeman, Percy Harvin)

I have a feeling we’re going to see plenty of surprises today. Tyson Jackson may just be the tip of the iceberg.

Guys, the first day is two rounds right?
Sorry, never really watched a full Draft because my team is the Raiders and we usually pick in the top ten so I only watch that. Hopefully we will pick 32nd next year.
Who Wants It More?
Wow
That means 5 round tomorrow It would be pretty boring sitting in a chair for about 2 days for Rich and the Gang.
Who Wants It More?
Tomorrow is only, I think, five minutes per pick. Don’t remember about round 2. Maybe seven minutes?
2nd round is 7 minutes
like you said

Chris, that’s what I’ve been wondering about all day. The guys on 850 earlier were steadfast thinking he’ll be there at five, but I don’t see it.
More interesting will be if Curry is there at No. 5, and then someone offers us a pretty darn good deal to move up (presumably so they could acquire Sanchez). I’d prefer Curry in that situation.

D’Brickashaw Ferguson was just introduced and got booed very loudly by the fans in attendance. Some of the likely top 10 are about to be introduced.
D'Brick deserves to get booed...
He has done nothing in his career to prove he was worthy of a top 5 pick…hopefully Gholston shows up, I would love to hear how much our fans give it to him

great job and thanks Eric Mangini for wanting Elam, Coleman, and Ratliff that much…I was very worried the Jets would give up next year’s #1 plus more future picks which would have upset me greatly…those 3 players are expendable and the 2nd rounder didnt look like it would yield the kind of player they wanted…seems like a great job…lets not rush Sanchez under center please
