2009 NFL Draft Day One- Open Thread #2

Dscf1613_medium

It's finally starting, and SB Nation writers John Bena and JasonB are there at Radio City Music Hall live-blogging the draft. Look for their updates on possible trades and other on-the-floor information in the comments.

This is your open thread. We'll update as new info rolls in.

[UPDATE]: From JasonB:

Jason Smith is on his phone and has a big old smile on his face... So I guess the Sanchez thing was BS.

[UPDATE]: As you can see, JasonB's info was dead on. Rams take Jason Smith, OT.

[UPDATE 4:18PM]: Big but odd rumor from JasonB:

Hearing some crazy rumors about the Eagles sending #21 and Shawn Andrews to Cleveland for the Browns #5 overall and Braylon Edwards. Seems very farfetched to me.

[UPDATE 4:39PM]: Looks like the Jets have traded up and are now on the clock at #5. Mark Sanchez is on his cell phone, smiling. Looks like Sanchez to the Jets.

[UPDATE 4:50PM]: From JasonB regarding Sanchez trade:

The press around us where surprised at the deal. The initial reaction was that the Jets gave up a lot.

[UPDATE 4:59PM]: When the Raiders bypassed WR Michael Crabtree for WR Darius Heyward-Bey, JasonB saw this from press nearby:

There were a number of laughs after that pick amongst the press.

[UPDATE 5:27PM]: From JasonB who was at Eugene Monroe press conference:

I just got back from the Eugene Monroe press conference and he was asked if he was surprised that Jacksonville took him.

He said, "Yeah, the last time I talked the Jaguars was pro day. I had no idea they wanted me."

Doesn't seem that way

The risk is too high for the Rams, with Bulger and Boller under contract. It looks like the Redskins and Jets are making their offers. Too many rumors coming from the Rams’ war room; can’t verify what the offers are. Supposedly, the Bucs are in the mix too.

No surprise. To me, Stafford’s success in the NFL will be linked directly to who Detroit takes with pick 20 and 33. They’ve already got a running back and wide receiver. If they draft a left tackle with one of those picks, Stafford has a good chance to succeed.

It could also be a situation of this being an average draft. Heck, quality player wise, what’s the difference between pick three and pick 15 in this draft?

Jackson moved pretty fluidly from 12-18 to #3

I think teams are planning further ahead, figuring out which players to take in case Options 1 or 2 aren’t there. It’s when Option 3 is gone that you’ll see a trade.

EA shoves aside Goodell?

Awesome. Kind of makes you wonder who runs the NFL: Goodell or TV?

I don’t think there’s any question that it’s the latter.

No surprise. He’s a very polarizing player.

Who should the Texans taken then?

by witty on Apr 25, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I like the pick. I’m just not surprised Texans fans don’t.
