2009 NFL Draft Day One- Open Thread #4

So far, the biggest upset picks have come from the AFC West. KC took Tyson Jackson at #3. Oakland stunned the draft room so far by bypassing Michael Crabtree and taking Darrius Heyward-Bey. Denver bypassed several defensive players and took RB Knowshon Moreno.

The Jets traded up with the Browns and took QB Mark Sanchez. The Browns traded all the way down to 21 just to take center Alex Mack.

Jason B and John Bena are coming live from Radio City Music Hall and we'll put up any hot news items they can give us.

A reach to start round 2

What is Detroit doing? They don’t take a left tackle or a middle linebacker.

Your thoughts? I like him a lot.

I was expecting a run on safeties, but not at the top of round 2

Thoughts from Aaron Maybin

From Jason B

Just very overwhelmed. I’m very happy to just be able to have a chance to play in such a great city for such an amazing franchise. It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m coming into a situation where I’m going to get a chance to play with some Penn State guys out there. They’ve got Paul Posluszny and Bryan Scott on the team right now. I’m really anxious to just get out there and just to start putting in work, just to start building the foundation out there for myself.

Weird ad

Here in Ohio, one of the local ads is for some Ohio Fantasy Football site. Very weird considering it’s April. I wonder how much money they threw at these ads?

I do too but not when the Browns need a middle linebacker so bad and I like Rey Maualuga so much.

Why the Browns hire Mangidiot?

Doesnt he run the same system as Romo?

Orakpo from the draft

From the Jason B via Orakpo’s presser:

(Washington’s linebackers coach) really likes me, sees me as a SAM back first and second and then it’s time to get after it, third and long or whatever the situation is. Get down in the stance and rush the pass and do what I do best. That’s the thing about me, I bring a lot of versatility to the table.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 25, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

More from Orakpo

From John Bena. This on playing next to Albert Haynesworth:

I am ecstatic. Having one of the best defensive tackles in the game right now will make my job easier, I’ll tell you that much. That is what you need, that force up the middle, so it will be great.

Did they take him as a QB or as a WR?
Because if they took him for WR then it’s another frakkin “Scouts think they know everything” decision because last time I checked Pat White WAS F-CKING GOOD as a QB. I would have taken him for QB before taking Freeman.

Poll suggestion

Here’s an idea for a poll:

“Which team has had the biggest WTF draft today?”
Raiders
Browns
Chargers
Denver
Bucs

I vote Chargers, surprisingly enough. They took English? Seriously???
Other than that I encourage everyone to vote the Bucs for WTF draft. They needed DT and WR and they still traded up for a QB that honestly no other team was going to waste a First Rounder on.

by witty on Apr 25, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

I would rank them...

Bucs, Raiders, Chargers, Broncos, Browns.

I really like what the Browns did. They only had 5 picks coming in and needed WAY more than 5 guys. That’s always a favorite strategy of mine.

by emiller17 on Apr 25, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Houston keeps improving pass rush

taking Connor Barwin. That’s kind of a surprise. They really need a safety.

Singeltary on Crabtree

From Jason B at the draft:

We had no idea he would be there at #10. It was one of the last scenarios that we thought we’d end up with. He’s been one of the best guys the past couple years in college football as a WR. So, very excited to have a playmaker on the offensive side of the ball.

I have my doubts about Paul Kruger

moving to a 3-4 outside linebacker spot. Until I see the Ravens take him. I feel the same way about Pittsburgh. If they’re taking a college end, you know they’re going to do well at 3-4 outside linebacker.

Good draft thus far for the Ravens after taking Michael Oher.

Just to let you know how the Bucs fans are responding to the draft

The Tampa Trib’s blog had to close down the thread they were running on the Freeman pick. Apparently the fan response was less than enthused.

by witty on Apr 25, 2009 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

not really

It’s sad is what it is. Fans live for Draft Day because they hope to see their team improve, and then they watch to see their team TRADE UP two measly spots to grab a QB they could have TRADED DOWN 8-14 spots to get, and not only that but a QB who’s rated 50th best overall (they could have taken Freeman in the Second if they still had a pick then), all the while looking at a defense that collapsed in one of the worst Decembers the team ever had (and when you consider the Bucs history esp. 1983-1996, that’s a huge lot of suck to contend with) leaving said fans wondering if anything is gonna be done to fix a D-line and LB corps that’s understaffed with rosters filled with question marks.

Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris on Josh Freeman

From Jason B live from Radio City Music Hall

You know, I made this statement the other day. If I had the Detroit Lions pick at No. 1, I might have taken Josh Freeman. I might have been fighting for him. Our owner is very excited, they haven’t had an opportunity to be this excited for 15 years and they are really pumped up. They’ve got a chance for a franchise quarterback, man. That’s our quarterback, to quote T.O.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 25, 2009 9:40 PM EDT reply actions

Man oh man. The fans might not like Morris after today.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 25, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

O RLY

When the coach comes out and says “Oh if we had the first overall pick we’d still take this guy,” it’s a clear red flag that he’s lying out of his… ahem, excuse me.

I mean, seriously, every draft observer knows damn well Stafford is more NFL ready and more deserving of a Top 10 pick than Freeman. Who is Morris kidding?

And he’s QUOTING T.O. to praise a QB? Isn’t that like quoting Karl Marx to praise JP Morgan?
