"Expert" mock draft contest results

Just a quick note here as the second day is about to start. Matt Infante and I participated in the Huddle Report’s expert mock draft contest. It was a one-round mock contest.

Matty finished tied for 36th. I finished tied for 43rd. Ninety-two mocks were compiled. We finished higher than guys like Chris Steuber of Scout.com, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Bucky Brooks of SI.com and Steve Wyche of NFL.com.

We didn’t figure trades in our mocks, nor did we go with Tyson Jackson at pick No. 3. The winner was Michael Band of Draft Ace.

Find the complete results here.

Hey Dan - Centers

Do you think Antoine Caldwell could be a successful center in the AFCN with 3-4 defenses and big defensive tackles?

Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.

by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 26, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions

He could be serviceable. As long as Caldwell doesn’t have to move around too much, he’s a pretty good blocker. However, he’s a big dropoff from the other centers that have already gone.

Thanks.

Bengals are still targeting centers and running back, along with other positions like FB, secondary, and other depth spots.

ESPN on day two

We get Mel Kiper, Chris Mortenson, Ron Jaworski, Herm Edwards and Tre (or Trey, or Trei) Wingo and some Todd McShay. I like this lineup much, much better.

Jaws like Mike Reilly

I tend to believe Jaworski more than most, so it will be intriguing to see how his NFL career goes.

How to follow day two

If you’re stuck with ESPN like I am, you might want to make sure to open up the site’s draftcast. That will probably update the picks faster than television.

Thinking more about Cincinnati

Because ESPN is talking about it. This seems like the kind of draft that will make or break the Bengals (and the career of Marvin Lewis). Sure, they probably need a wide receiver, but they have a ton of talent to work with.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 10:49 AM EDT reply actions

I agree 100%:

They have the three guys I was praying the Raiders would draft. They just didn’t fall far enough.

Where do you think the Bengals go the rest of the draft?

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

RE:

We projected center, but we’re starting to feel that the team feels that the centers on roster might be indifferent talent-wise to really select another. However, that’s still possible.

They have a big interest with Rashad Jennings, and we figure that Jennings will be the next pick or two. They will likely look at running back nonetheless.

The Bengals have talked about safety, and will likely look at a fullback, quarterback and punter (the UC punter). We also think there’s a chance at another offensive lineman, possibly a cornerback.

Well considering I’m a Bears fan and they had no 1st day picks, this is a big highlight here. I’ve been somewhat surprised, but it’s hard to argue with the value of the picks we’ve taken so far.

by JohnPaul on Apr 26, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a good point.

I’m a little puzzled by the Melton pick, but other than that it’s been a good draft. I like the Knox pick a lot. It gives them another vertical threat for Jay Cutler.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

agree on Melton

But Gilbert & Iglesias in the 3rd round are solid, solid picks. DJ Moore in the 4th is an absolute steal. Normally us Bears fans spew a lot of hating on Jerry Angelo, but he’s actually done halfway decent in this draft. Only thing most of us really want (that he hasn’t drafted yet) is a solid safety, as our current safeties basically suck.

Interesting pick for Buffalo

They go with Oklahoma safety Nic Harris. Does he stay or safety, or do the Bills move him to outside linebacker because of speed issues? Or does it not matter at all because he might just be a special teams player?

Still, it’s been a great draft for Buffalo.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

agree

They could have struck out completely today and it still would be a great draft for them, just considering their haul yesterday. Anything they pull in today is icing on the cake.

Vikings trade up

To take Jasper Brinkley. That’s a very good choice. Brinkley slimmed down and was healthy during offseason workouts. He has a chance to be a premier run stopper at the next level.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

couldn't agree more

This is by far the biggest surprise for me in the entire draft. Many people had him as the top OG in the draft. I gotta think it is something nobody knows about… maybe a positive drug test at the combine? A few names were leaked but I don’t think all of the names ever went public, any chance maybe this guy had a positive for ’roids or something?

I’m just trying to imagine anything that might cause a borderline 1st-rounder to drop to what is now approaching the end of the 5th round.

by JohnPaul on Apr 26, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Try to convince me the Bucs took the right OT this round

I’m looking at Xavier Fulton’s bio on the CBS tracker and all I’m seeing are injury histories.

Were there other OTs still on the board that the Bucs could have gotten, or was Fulton really the best choice at that spot?

by witty on Apr 26, 2009 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

If it wasn’t Jamon Meredith, I think Fulton was the best offensive tackle left.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm extremely surprised at how well the Bears draft is going

Gilbert and Moore were BPA, Iglesias could take over for Rashied “no hands” Davis, Melton could develop into something good with Miranelli and Freeman will at least contribute on special teams and might start at some point, considering how lackluster Nick Roach is. I didn’t really like the Knox pick, but he could help out on special teams.

I’d give it a B+, considering we didn’t have a first day pick. This definitely looks like one Jerry Angelo’s better drafts.

(btw, great pick for the Eagles getting Macho so late)

Poll suggestion

Question I have every draft year:

“Should the NFL take the Draft Weekend on the road and visit other NFL towns every year?”
answers should be:
“Yes! Do it like the Super Bowl, but for towns where they usually can’t host Super Bowls. It’d be neat to have a draft in Green Bay or Kansas City some year.”
“Are you kidding? No more annoying J-E-T-S fans booing every year!”
“No. We don’t wanna travel out of town for a weekend just so we can boo our J-E-T-S second round picks! Just leave it here!”
“Why travel? It’s almost all online anyway.”

I think he’s pretty good. If a team knows that they’re getting an immobile guy, they know what they’ll have in Brandstater.

He does have good upside considering he had four different offensive coordinators at Fresno State. There’s a scouting report on him here.

giants get 6 of top 100 best players

Have not seen much positive comments about Gints draft, but after reviewing your own top 100 list, Giants nailed 6 of them. Twice what would have been an equal distribution across all teams. Nothing flash, but solid depth and future players to keep the Giants at the top of the division.

by gianteaglehater on Apr 26, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, you’re totally right there. I’m having a hard time judging the Giants because they’re depth players, which means the franchise is in great standing.

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I would still not rule out a trade for experienced wide receiver by June as the value falls to our favor, using next year picks and our overstocked roster. Dream would be Braylon at 1, Nicks replacing toomer and smith in the slot and Ramses Barden in red zone

by gianteaglehater on Apr 26, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I don;t understand the Giants draft hate

I don;’t even see any, if there is then they need to look a bit closer at who the Giants got.

They got 4 weapons to compete for positions on the offense. 4!!! Nicks, barden, Beckum and brown may be "depth’ but they are all going to compete for spots. Beckum plays the H-Back, the Giants don’t have an H-back so he could start at that. Brown is a clone of derrick Ward, so he’s going to compete with Bradshaw and Ware. Nicks and Barden are going to compete with Hixon Smith and Manningham for the top spots.

Beatty is a depth pick that was needed, and Sintim was a OLB that’s been mocked to the Giants in some way or form for almost the entire offseason.

EXCELLENT picks all around, Barden may be the next guy in the mold of Vincent Jackson and Brandon Marshall (he’s bigger, and just as fast.).

Yea, not all are going to be hits. But when looked at all of them RIGHT NOW, Id have a hard time rating their draft any less than an A++. This could turn their offense down right scary, the Beckum pick especially will make the Giants passing O relevant in the winter months.

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 26, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Enough with Drew Rosenhaus

That has to be the most-played commercial on ESPN all weekend. The premise is stupid. Why would Rosenhaus be bargaining for less money on anything? He should have been the cashier charging up the lunch. Ugh. See what it comes to at this point in the draft?

by Dan Kadar on Apr 26, 2009 4:48 PM EDT reply actions

My problem is with those Coors Coaches commercials.

Are we gonna have coaches intentionally pull some meltdown stunts ala “Playoffs?!?!” or “They are who we thought we were!!!” just so they can come back 2-3 years later for a huge payoff in a silly beer ad?

by witty on Apr 26, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions
