"Expert" mock draft contest results
Just a quick note here as the second day is about to start. Matt Infante and I participated in the Huddle Report’s expert mock draft contest. It was a one-round mock contest.
Matty finished tied for 36th. I finished tied for 43rd. Ninety-two mocks were compiled. We finished higher than guys like Chris Steuber of Scout.com, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Bucky Brooks of SI.com and Steve Wyche of NFL.com.
We didn’t figure trades in our mocks, nor did we go with Tyson Jackson at pick No. 3. The winner was Michael Band of Draft Ace.
Find the complete results here.
Hey Dan - Centers
Do you think Antoine Caldwell could be a successful center in the AFCN with 3-4 defenses and big defensive tackles?
Blogger at CincyJungle.com -- SB Nation Cincinnati Bengals blog.
by Josh Kirkendall on Apr 26, 2009 10:02 AM EDT reply actions
He could be serviceable. As long as Caldwell doesn’t have to move around too much, he’s a pretty good blocker. However, he’s a big dropoff from the other centers that have already gone.
Thanks.
Bengals are still targeting centers and running back, along with other positions like FB, secondary, and other depth spots.

ESPN on day two
We get Mel Kiper, Chris Mortenson, Ron Jaworski, Herm Edwards and Tre (or Trey, or Trei) Wingo and some Todd McShay. I like this lineup much, much better.
Jaws like Mike Reilly
I tend to believe Jaworski more than most, so it will be intriguing to see how his NFL career goes.
How to follow day two
If you’re stuck with ESPN like I am, you might want to make sure to open up the site’s draftcast. That will probably update the picks faster than television.
It can be found here.

Thinking more about Cincinnati
Because ESPN is talking about it. This seems like the kind of draft that will make or break the Bengals (and the career of Marvin Lewis). Sure, they probably need a wide receiver, but they have a ton of talent to work with.
I agree 100%:
They have the three guys I was praying the Raiders would draft. They just didn’t fall far enough.
But when they start scheming us the way these guys did, and we weren't particularly ready for it, anything can happen."

RE:
We projected center, but we’re starting to feel that the team feels that the centers on roster might be indifferent talent-wise to really select another. However, that’s still possible.
They have a big interest with Rashad Jennings, and we figure that Jennings will be the next pick or two. They will likely look at running back nonetheless.
The Bengals have talked about safety, and will likely look at a fullback, quarterback and punter (the UC punter). We also think there’s a chance at another offensive lineman, possibly a cornerback.

Edwards and Boldin
All the teams that “seemed” interested or a good fit have filled those needs a bit. Everybody staying put now? What about CLE taking 2 WRs yesterday?

Asher Allen is a great pickup for Minnesota
He could start there really soon or be a good nickel back.

It's like...
the league just lines up to give them picks. Oh, Bellicheat called, I’ll give him next year’s 2nd rounder. Good trade for me…
Pats stockpiling 2nd rounders
So the Pats will now have 3 second rounders next year (their own, Jacksonville’s, and Tennessee’s). Looks like Belichick is single-handedly fleecing the AFC South…
Dan, you have anything on Jerrard Powers?

Dan, is the Panthers selection of DT Corey Irvin a reach?
in the 3rd? Seems he was rated lower
I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com
I think so
There are few players who are similar in style, like Vance Walker or Ricky Jean-Francois, who are similar who I like better.
So
Not only do the Patriots get two second rounders in next year’s draft, but a really good outside ilnebacker in Tyrone McKenzie. Not far!
Bengals going the Arizona route?
A few years ago, Arizona got the tag of just taking “name” players. Cincinnati is doing the same by taking Chase Coffman. He’s a good pick. that’s for sure.
good value pick
Don’t know anything about the current Cincy TE’s but I think to pick up Coffman in the compensatory portion of the 3rd round is a pretty good deal.
Utecht is the man
not really though. He’s a good #2 TE though. Blocks and and catches well. He’s just slow and injury prone.

Bears fan
Well considering I’m a Bears fan and they had no 1st day picks, this is a big highlight here. I’ve been somewhat surprised, but it’s hard to argue with the value of the picks we’ve taken so far.
That’s a good point.
I’m a little puzzled by the Melton pick, but other than that it’s been a good draft. I like the Knox pick a lot. It gives them another vertical threat for Jay Cutler.
agree on Melton
But Gilbert & Iglesias in the 3rd round are solid, solid picks. DJ Moore in the 4th is an absolute steal. Normally us Bears fans spew a lot of hating on Jerry Angelo, but he’s actually done halfway decent in this draft. Only thing most of us really want (that he hasn’t drafted yet) is a solid safety, as our current safeties basically suck.
Broncos trade up to take Kenny McKinley
Good move, I guess for Denver. They have extra picks. He’s probably a better pick than Jarrett Dillard or Quan Cosby.
More smart picking by Bengals
They just took Cincinnati punter Kevin Huber. They clearly needed a punter and he’s the best one available. Who’s next? I like Chris Miller from Ball State.
As expected
Cowboys trade up. They’ve got plenty of picks to move and trade some to Atlanta for pick 143
The rest of my top 100 remaining
29. Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma, 6’5, 335

81. Marcus Freeman, OLB, Ohio State, 6’1, 238
82. Darry Beckwith, ILB, LSU, 6’1, 235
85. James Davis, RB, Clemson, 5’11, 210
86. James Casey, TE, Rice, 6’4, 235
87. Fenuki Tupou, OT, Oregon, 6’6, 328
88. Trevor Canfield, G, Cincinnati, 6’5, 305
91. Jasper Brinkley, ILB, South Carolina, 6’2, 262
92. Coye Francies, CB, San Jose State, 6’0, 185
94. Joe Burnett, CB, Central Florida, 5’10, 185
96. Augustus Parrish, OT, Kent State, 6’4, 297
Interesting pick for Buffalo
They go with Oklahoma safety Nic Harris. Does he stay or safety, or do the Bills move him to outside linebacker because of speed issues? Or does it not matter at all because he might just be a special teams player?
Still, it’s been a great draft for Buffalo.
Vikings trade up
To take Jasper Brinkley. That’s a very good choice. Brinkley slimmed down and was healthy during offseason workouts. He has a chance to be a premier run stopper at the next level.
Cincy drafted a punter?
Um. Really. They were that desperate to take a guy who most likely would have been there in the Seventh round… or UFA… honestly, who drafts Ps and Ks anymore…?
Huber would have been drafted.
And the Bengals addressed a definite need, rather than drafting a position for depth.

I do feel the DB situation for the Bucs need to be addressed a bit more than the OLB situation… although a surprise LB pick of excellent value would be nice… ;)

Question
Obviously some players (Aaron Curry) are super-talented and will succeed regardless of where they play, but who do you feel has been put in the best position to succeed based on the team that drafted him?
Is there about to be a running back run?
None were taken so far in the fifth round and several pretty good ones are still out there.

couldn't agree more
This is by far the biggest surprise for me in the entire draft. Many people had him as the top OG in the draft. I gotta think it is something nobody knows about… maybe a positive drug test at the combine? A few names were leaked but I don’t think all of the names ever went public, any chance maybe this guy had a positive for ’roids or something?
I’m just trying to imagine anything that might cause a borderline 1st-rounder to drop to what is now approaching the end of the 5th round.
Try to convince me the Bucs took the right OT this round
I’m looking at Xavier Fulton’s bio on the CBS tracker and all I’m seeing are injury histories.
Were there other OTs still on the board that the Bucs could have gotten, or was Fulton really the best choice at that spot?
I'm extremely surprised at how well the Bears draft is going
Gilbert and Moore were BPA, Iglesias could take over for Rashied “no hands” Davis, Melton could develop into something good with Miranelli and Freeman will at least contribute on special teams and might start at some point, considering how lackluster Nick Roach is. I didn’t really like the Knox pick, but he could help out on special teams.
I’d give it a B+, considering we didn’t have a first day pick. This definitely looks like one Jerry Angelo’s better drafts.
(btw, great pick for the Eagles getting Macho so late)
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
What is going on with Duke Robinson
I thought he might be the first lineman to go after the big 4 LTs. Just how bad did he screw up in the offseason workouts?

Meredith, Robinson and Jennings falling so far
really surprised me. Any chance one of them falls to the 6th or 7th or (gasp) goes undrafted?

Also, Mike Mickens
I’ve seen him go as high as the late first in some mocks. Why would he still be on the board?

Still trying to wrap my brain around Derek Cox
A 2nd rounder for a guy who wasn’t even invited to the combine. Gene Smith better have used all of his Blesto Hall of Fame ability on that one.

Yeah, the only thing that has kept me from exploding is Gene hit home runs with Mathis and Justin Durant.
Nothing else he knows small school gems when he sees them.

Color me surprised
I guess teams ARE worried their favorite punter won’t be there by the Seventh Round anymore…
You know the Draft is speeding towards its final end
When the CBS Draft Tracker starts getting gaps in its updates.
Remember when we picked Michael Hamlin in the second round for the Falcons?
…Just went off the board. There have been an awful lot of surprises this draft, no?
Yeah, quite a few. In my first mock, I gave him to the Cowboys in round two. Halprin busted my balls something fierce. Look, he’s a Roy Williams kind of player. Double-J must love those kind of guys.
plus
his brother is the starting FS for the ’Boys.

Poll suggestion
Question I have every draft year:
“Should the NFL take the Draft Weekend on the road and visit other NFL towns every year?”
answers should be:
“Yes! Do it like the Super Bowl, but for towns where they usually can’t host Super Bowls. It’d be neat to have a draft in Green Bay or Kansas City some year.”
“Are you kidding? No more annoying J-E-T-S fans booing every year!”
“No. We don’t wanna travel out of town for a weekend just so we can boo our J-E-T-S second round picks! Just leave it here!”
“Why travel? It’s almost all online anyway.”

Beuhler reportedly downed protein shake and knocked over trees with his bare hands following the pick.
Round 6 has arrived
With Tom Brandstater. Whoopee!
By the way, folks, I have a dinner to eat in about 25 minutes. I will return before the end of the draft. Keep the conversation going.
Casillias from WIS
I was just reading some profiles on him. I like the thought of him fitting into a Colts system. Any thoughts?

I think he’s pretty good. If a team knows that they’re getting an immobile guy, they know what they’ll have in Brandstater.
He does have good upside considering he had four different offensive coordinators at Fresno State. There’s a scouting report on him here.
I really like...
Davis’ situation. I think he can succed with Gore there and that D coming into form. Good value for San Fran. If Davis doesn’t press in his last two games, he goes much higher.
He couldn't have gone to a better place
Davis has been crapped on as of late, but I still think he’s got some potential.
Brian Hoyer's girlfriend update
Maybe it’s because I’ve been staring at guys at all day, but I’m starting to warm up to Hoyer’s lady. They’re only about 40 minutes from my house. Perhaps she could be swept off her feet by a draft nerd…
Spencer Adkins for the Falcons
Guy’s as raw as week-old sushi, but damned if he hasn’t got loads of potential.
a Cane, right?
If I’m not mistaken, is he the first Hurricane taken in the draft this year? Or did I miss someone? Either way, it’s amazing how fall down in talent that program has gone.
Good ST player...
Just like the Colts. Let him contribute and learn on ST and then get him in the mix.

giants get 6 of top 100 best players
Have not seen much positive comments about Gints draft, but after reviewing your own top 100 list, Giants nailed 6 of them. Twice what would have been an equal distribution across all teams. Nothing flash, but solid depth and future players to keep the Giants at the top of the division.
by gianteaglehater on Apr 26, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, you’re totally right there. I’m having a hard time judging the Giants because they’re depth players, which means the franchise is in great standing.
I would still not rule out a trade for experienced wide receiver by June as the value falls to our favor, using next year picks and our overstocked roster. Dream would be Braylon at 1, Nicks replacing toomer and smith in the slot and Ramses Barden in red zone

I don;t understand the Giants draft hate
I don;’t even see any, if there is then they need to look a bit closer at who the Giants got.
They got 4 weapons to compete for positions on the offense. 4!!! Nicks, barden, Beckum and brown may be "depth’ but they are all going to compete for spots. Beckum plays the H-Back, the Giants don’t have an H-back so he could start at that. Brown is a clone of derrick Ward, so he’s going to compete with Bradshaw and Ware. Nicks and Barden are going to compete with Hixon Smith and Manningham for the top spots.
Beatty is a depth pick that was needed, and Sintim was a OLB that’s been mocked to the Giants in some way or form for almost the entire offseason.
EXCELLENT picks all around, Barden may be the next guy in the mold of Vincent Jackson and Brandon Marshall (he’s bigger, and just as fast.).
Yea, not all are going to be hits. But when looked at all of them RIGHT NOW, Id have a hard time rating their draft any less than an A++. This could turn their offense down right scary, the Beckum pick especially will make the Giants passing O relevant in the winter months.

Enough with Drew Rosenhaus
That has to be the most-played commercial on ESPN all weekend. The premise is stupid. Why would Rosenhaus be bargaining for less money on anything? He should have been the cashier charging up the lunch. Ugh. See what it comes to at this point in the draft?
My problem is with those Coors Coaches commercials.
Are we gonna have coaches intentionally pull some meltdown stunts ala “Playoffs?!?!” or “They are who we thought we were!!!” just so they can come back 2-3 years later for a huge payoff in a silly beer ad?
Man, I’m running out of ranked guys:

Cleveland took Ryan Pontbriand in the fifth round, and that has turned into a really good pick. If the guy is going to play consistently, why not take him?
