The cure at quarterback: San Francisco
No other position in the NFL Draft carries more prestige than quarterback. Looking ahead to the 2010 draft, several teams could be looking at for a new signal caller. During the offseason, we're going to breakdown what teams could be going after a new quarterback following this season.
Who: San Francisco 49ers
Currently have: Shaun Hill, Alex Smith, Damon Huard, Nate Davis
Breakdown: Hill, the starter, is an eight-year veteran. He played in nine game for the 49ers in 2008, completing 62.8 percent of his passes for 2,046 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Although Hill showed promise at times in 2008, he was very inconsistent. HIs arm isn't especially strong, but he's fairly accurate.
In games he's started, San Francisco is 7-3. In February of 2008, Hill signed a three-year contract with San Francisco.
Smith, a former No. 1 pick, is a bust. That's thanks in large part to injuries, simple lack of ability and continued change at offensive coordinator for the 49ers. In 2008, Smith was put on injured reserve in September due to a broken shoulder bone. He restructured his pricey rookie contract is with the team for two more seasons.
Huard, a former starter in Kansas City, should only be considered as a backup. Davis is a fifth-round rookie with a learning disability and weird release.
Why that's not good enough: San Francisco has a good nucleus coming together on offense. The team took Michael Crabtree 10th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft and has a sound running game with veteran Frank Gore and rookie Glen Coffee. The team's line is developing nicely with Joe Staley and David Baas on the left side.
Why waste that talent with an average, at best, quarterback in Hill? Neither Smith or Huard will ever get consideration as a starter in 2009, putting the onus squarely on Hill. He controls his own fate in San Francisco.

Smith
I’m not sure I’d say Smith will get NO chance. Hill is certainly the front-runner heading into camp. However, since he’s not a clear cut #1, I think Smith will get a decent chance, although it would require struggles by Hill. The problem is that Hill is a notoriously poor practice performer, who makes plays on game day. That might make the decision a bit more difficult if Smith excels in practice.

I've had a soft spot for Hill
ever since he pushed the draft pick the Patriots had gotten from the Niners out of the top 5, with some late season wins after entering the lineup.

Agreed
Pushing in it back a bit, so we could land Mayo was great.

lol
pats fans are so delusional they think that having their pick move further down in the draft without getting any picks in exchange is a good thing.

no kidding
It was never a secret that the Saints really wanted to draft Glenn Dorsey… New England would have been exactly at the Saints pick with even more draft picks to show for it, and in a position to take the same player.
On the other hand, they probably would have targeted the same guy. I can’t imagine Vernon Gholston or Glenn Dorsey being all that enticing.
Darren McFadden on the other hand… shudder

I don't know
the Patriots aren’t known for taking advantage of teams wanting to move up to pile up tons of future picks…

I'm really not sure McFadden would have helped the Pats much at all last year.
They already have a very good (albeit no-name) running game, and McFadden was nothing special in 2008.
Either way, he was certainly worth a lot less than Jerod Mayo was.

I'll tell you what I think of the Ravens draft. Is that close enough?
Oher pick was outstanding.
Kruger was good value
Webb was a bit strange, but lots of odd corners were coming off the board in round 3
Phillips was a guy I really liked in the mid rounds
and adding a TE and RB/KR late is solid too.

That’s about my opinion too… although Cedric Peerman has just become my new personal small-sample Speed Score test, which is exciting.
And the Oher pick was simply absurd.
As for Indy… I’m really curious as to how Fili Moala will do in whatever defensive system Indy’s running that incorporates Fili Moala. I had him pegged as a 3-4 DE for sure (as apparently, Bill Polian did also, since you traded up for him right before the Ravens picked)
I simply don’t know how I feel about Donald Brown/Joseph Addai. I understand taking the best available player and all that, but I’m not convinced that a) Brown was really the best player overall or b) RBs in the first are a great idea or c) you can really get full mileage off of two running backs.
I see Indy also went with a 5 foot 9 corner in the third. Apparently, tall receivers are going to become really valuable really quickly.
Terrence Taylor could be a mini mountain, but not probably needs some heavy coaching and a bit of luck
My biggest eyebrow was a kicker in the last round. Is Vinatieri going someplace? Why spend a draft pick on a training camp only kicker or KOS?
But, at least you left us Graham Gano for our training camp competition. Gano vs. Haushka
God I want football to start now.
by math_geek on Apr 29, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
the kicker was also the punter as an upperclassman in college,
he’s going to be Indy’s punter with Hunter gone to WAS and he has a HUGE leg. So he may be the KOS and might even try some looooong FGs. When I posted the pick thread on Stampede Blue my only comment was “Don’t worry, he punts”
Fili and Taylor give them an option of 2 300lb DTs on the field at the same time. While that doesn’t sound like anything special to most teams, for Indy that’s a departure from the last few years (made worse by every Indy NT over the last 3 years getting hurt or having personal issues take them off the team). No idea yet if the big DTs are the new mold and the small guys are 3rd down players now or if they just wanted to have a big/small option at DT and the tiny old starters will still play a featured role.
If they can get Brown’s pass blocking skills from “he’s strong and he tries” to “pretty good” then he’ll fit in perfect. He’s a very good receiver, high character/work ethic guy, rarely fumbles, and he’s more of a straight ahead runner to go with Addai’s more shifty style. Personally I wanted Ziggy Hood, Hakeem Nicks or Eben Britton, but questioning Polian’s draft picks, especially in the first round, is a losing game. They’ll get mileage out of both backs because Addai can’t stay healthy in more than a 1a role. His ceiling is Westbrook. Phenomenal back that will break down when you lean on him as much as you’d like to. Barring major injury Addai will get a bit more than half the carries leaving a sizable chunk for Brown (I also think the lack of a proven 3rd WR will keep them in the 2 TE base they’ve been using since 2006 and with that will come a bit more running and play action over spreading it out with Marvin, Reggie, Clark, Gonzalez and Addai.)
The small corner is another hint at a shift under the new HC/DC. He’s more of a speedy cover guy than the strong, but speed-limited tacklers that Indy had piled up on the roster.
I like their draft, but in the words of Bill Polian
"If you give out the report cards the day after the draft, it’s completely devoid of reason. How can you possibly give a student a grade the day he is admitted to college and enrolls in class? Draft report cards are the same thing. I used to get mad at those things, but now I say, ‘Fine. Give us a C every year, and we’ll just keep making the playoffs.’ ’’

ah… punter… ok that makes a lot more sense.
Fili and Taylor give them an option of 2 300lb DTs on the field at the same time. While that doesn’t sound like anything special to most teams, for Indy that’s a departure from the last few years.
That’s why I’m so perplexed by it. Doesn’t mean I think it’s a bad idea though. Just I had always thought of Fili as a 3-4 guy, as opposed to a classic Indy 4-3 mini DT
As for Donald Brown, I like the back… and yeah, if Addai is not going to stay healthy, then Brown can add a lot to an offense. I’m not about to slam the pick… I’m just beginning to wonder if an RB in the first is ever really that good of an idea. They’re fun as hell to watch and one of my favorite positions. But their upside is still a top talent for a career five years shorter than just about any other position. Brown’s definitely the back you wanted though.
Small Corners are becoming all the rage. The Ravens, to replace Chris McCallister and Samari Rolle, have brought in Dominique Foxworth, Fabian Washington, Chris Carr, and Lardarius Webb???? Small is the new big apparently. I think it’s fine, especially with a lot of small guys emerging like DeSean Jackson and Wes Welker, but it’s going to make those bigger receivers that much better.

Brown’s definitely the back you wanted though.
Unless you believe in Speed Score – of course Westbrook sucked at Speed Score too

nearly everyone in the class sucked at Speed Score
Though one of my favorites pre-draft was Andre Brown who had a pretty good speed score.

Do people really want team by team draft thoughts?
I’m hesitant on doing them because there’s a blog for every team on the SBN network. But if people want my thoughts on some specific topics or teams, I reckon we can cobble something together.

i think that SMith
will get another chance…they did invest a lot into him, i don’t think they are ready to label him a bust and move on…and if they go elsewhere for a QB, where would they go?
