A look back at Todd McShay's first 2009 mock, and what it means for MtD
This is Todd McShay's first mock for 2009. It came out shortly after the 2008 NFL Draft.
What he got right: Kansas City's drafting position, Andre Smith's draft position, Knowshon Moreno being the first running back taken.
What he got wrong: Just about everything else. Yikes. Just look at this thing:
1. Atlanta Falcons — Fili Moala, DT, USC
2. Detroit Lions — Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech
3. Kansas City Chiefs — Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia
4. Miami Dolphins — Al Woods, DT, LSU
5. Cincinnati Bengals — Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn
6. Oakland Raiders — Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
7. Chicago Bears — Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
8. San Francisco 49ers — Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
9. St. Louis Rams — Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
10. New York Jets — Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
How this relates to Mocking the Draft: You may think it's silly to put out a 2010 mock draft this time of year. You'd be right. However, we're going to do it anyway. This time next week, look for a one-round mock.
The problem in doing this comes in the draft order. Keep it how it was this year? Make a new order and get ripped by homer fans? The latter might be more fun.
We'll also begin putting out overall rankings for 2010 next week. There will be seniors and juniors.

Keeping how it was may be even more inaccurate than guessing. My personal favorite is that 4 of McShay’s top ten were drafted in the first round.
WHO GOT THE #1 PLAYER IN THE DRAFT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I can clear up some of the Moala to Indy confusion
the season Moala had just finished that had McShay listing up at #1 overall was as a 4-3 DT.

yeah, I was never confused… just intrigued.
Moala played 3-4 in college and what-not. He’s quite the talent, but something’s going on in Indy to take someone with his skill-set. I’m assuming hes in line to play 3-technique, and it will be interesting to see how well he does it.
Hey, the Ravens took a 4-3 defensive end with the stated intention of putting 20 pounds on him and having him play 3-4 DE. We actually once took a 4-3 DT and put him at 3-4 SAM… Jarret Johnston. Nothing wrong with these innovations, they can be great when they work.
Moala is definately playing some 3 tech
the question is if he’s play any 1 tech.
On passing downs will he slide over or leave the field for one of the smaller 3 techs, or is he staying on as a fixture in that spot.

McCoy McCoy for the Seahawks please!
McCoy McCoy 2010, also acceptable, Russell Okung, Ndamukong Suh, Dez Bryant, Ciron Black, Trent Williams, and Bryan Baluga.
REALLY??????
Why the hell would you want the next in line of bust system QB"s??

I don't, that's why I said McCoy not Bradford or Tebow.

Well
if you don;t put McCoy in the same category of system QB’s as Bradford, maybe check out a few UT and OU games.
They are the same exactly types of offense.
They may have talent, but if NFL teams aren’t in position to give these guys 3-4 years to learn an NFL playbook, they all will be busts.
Its just rare for a spread/system QB (whatever you want to call it) to actually be good in the NFL. Alex Smith, Tim Couch, Vince Young…These guys may have some athletic ability and the talent, but you have to give them a long time cuz they pretty much had coloring books for playbooks in college.
Can I has Bulaga?

I would ask you to come up with a draft order so all the hatred could be targeted in your direction. But then I figured you’d give Indianapolis the Super Bowl and we know that will never happen.
they are as likely to win as just about anyone
I would just go with the same order as this years. No need to put in extra work for something that’s only going to draw hate.

As a huuuuuuuge NFL fan that has never gotten into college football I love the idea of early mock drafts. To tell you the truth I view college football as nothing but a 2-4 year tryout for the NFL. Until they get this stupid BSC nonsense out and setup a real championship tournament there is no way I can actually put my heart in to it.
Back on topic… I depend on these mock drafts so if i ever do have a free saturday I know which games to watch and more importantly which games to key in on. I am new to this site (and the SBNation) but i always thought it would be a good idea for a site to do a weekly segment on players matchups to watch for each given week. Say the 2010 versions of Jason Smith and Chris Long are preparing for a big Baylor vs UVA game. Normally that would be a snoozefest for me, knowing though that there are 2 bigtime prospects for me to key in on I would be 100x more interested.
Also… is there any where that mcshay’s complete mock is available or was it just top 10??
Al Woods??
Dont recognize that name at all… did he completely fall off or did he stay in school? Is he still ranked high for next year??
still in school

Brandon Spikes.
McShay’s top 16 does not include Spikes and I have to wonder why. He’s likely going to be 2010’s Aaron Curry, basically, don’t you think?

Hard to say at this point. He’s talented and athletic, but so is Sergio Kindle, Antonio Coleman and Sean Weatherspoon.
The Thing About Spikes.
Brandon is versatile and complete. He can drop back in coverage, get picks and take them to the house. He can rush the passer off the edge. He can rack up the tackles in the middle and make plays sideline to sideline. I could see him thriving in any scheme anywhere. He’s not perfect, but he’s definitely one of the most complete and he’s getting a ton out of his potential. Anything can happen between now and then, but right now, doesn’t he have to be in everyone’s top ten prospects overall as the top LB and the top half of mocks?

If Spikes was in this draft
Aaron Curry’s name gets called a bit later. Maybe not that much later, but after Spikes name…..
